Let's start by pointing out my first mistake:
Showing up in Rapid City in late July at 9 PM without hotel reservations the week before the annual Sturgis motorcycle event and hoping to find lodging. And, no, I'm not a biker so I didn't know anything about Sturgis.
My first good decision:
Asking the clerk at an over-booked hotel if she knew of any other hotels that had rooms available.
Apparently, the hotels have a list during the Sturgis event that indicates which hotels still have (or might have) rooms available. Thanks to the clerk at a Quality Inn, I was sent to the Foothills Inn and found a room for the two nights that I planned on staying in Rapid City.
As far as hotels go, the Foothills Inn was pretty average. It's located off I-90 at exit 59, south a few blocks on Lacrosse Street. I ended up in a smokers room, which was the only vacant room left in the hotel. It definitely had a stench of smoke (quite apparent to a non-smoker). Since I only planned to sleep in the room and then do touristy things during the day, I tolerated the smell.
The free wifi signal in my room was kind of weak. But since there were several other hotels in the area, I was able to pick up another wifi signal from a neighboring hotel that worked quite well.
Continental breakfast was the standard cereal, milk, toast, and orange juice, though I opted to eat breakfast out.
The daily rate for a room with a king size bed was $129 plus $10 state tax and $2 city tax. The cost was kind of steep for my alloted budget considering I had to settle for a smoker's room. But for a last-minute find during a heavy tourist week, I was just happy to find any room.
