Portland, OR
This place is kind of hidden in NW Portland. But once I discovered it, I went there several times a week at lunch or to pick up groceries.
They had great produce all the time. And food served in the deli was always really good. Try the Spicy Tofu slabs- they're great. Many vegetarian options (though I am not a veg).
I also really like the bulk food section here. If I wanted obscure spices or grains or beans, they almost always had what I needed. I always found great things to snack on in this area, too. Dried fruit, cereals, they even have two kinds of non-meat jerky (mild and hot) that is seriously addictive.
Staff is super friendly, too. -

I am a cooper. Coops are local businesses - most groceries are not.
The theory is that selling basic foodstuffs should be a nonprofit local enterprise. And food coops operate with a certain amount of idealism, which is so much needed in the world. The contrapositive is that coops can make decisions too slowly, hey just like Occupy!
But coops are innovators too - they pioneered organic, bulk, customer-driven product mix, bring your own bag and local/sustainable sourcing. Without Food Front there would be no New Seasons, it was started by Food Front staff. Without coops there would not be organic or bulk at Kroger-Fred Meyer. The biggies will soon copy the raw options at Food Front. Cred.
Food Front went through some rough times when the grumpy staff unionized. But I can say now they are solidly customer service oriented and present.
With agrabiz and internationally grown bulk produce source options, Food Front chooses organic and local every time. It may not be the cheapest, but you know where it is coming from.
They have sale days, and member sales. It's not that expensive to become a member, and it gives you a view into how the food business works. Membership is fully refundable, you are a stockholder and you can sell back your share. They have a transparent board of directors process too, with information in binders and on bulletin boards by the front of the store. Match that, giant grocery conglomerate!
This branch is small, but they are focused on what most people in the neighborhood need day to day. Excellent for bulk items. You can bring in your spice jars or grain containers and have them weighed at the main or deli registers for "tare weight" - the empty weight, fill them, then weigh out exactly what you bought when you check out. Just ask anyone working there how it works. Easy way to reduce landfill!
I'm a supporter of all the Portland coops. Peoples has a strong volunteer community and Alberta has some awesome produce prices. Food Front is the middle age coop, solid, a great mix of products. Pick one in your hood and stop by the rest sometime.
Food Front is that great specialized small and healthy grocery for its neighborhood - think outside the big food box!Listed in: I Like to Write and Sometimes…

I adore this co-op. Prices can be a little higher than larger markets, but they have a great selection of natural, local, and health products. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable. I love supporting this business.

I love this place and do most of my grocery shopping here - I'm there at least three times per week. Helpful tip is that most of the food in the deli is organic (it's not labeled, thus I avoided it for a long time before I asked about the organic-ness). The produce selection is good, particularly for local foods in the summer. The rest of the time I like to do a mix of produce from Food Front and Fred Meyer.
My only complaints would be there are often people outside hounding you to sign their petition/make donations, and the checkers' demeanor is noticeably much less cheery than that of workers at Whole Foods or Zupan's. Maybe they're just more authentic? (I mean, I was a checker once. It's hard to act like you enjoy it, especially when you're scanning bags of freeze-dried kale (omg so good!) that cost more than your hourly wage.
This place is my go-to for eggs (Phonenix Farm - they roam around outside, peck on organic feed and don't have their beaks clipped), raw goats milk (yes, raw!), spices, kombucha and a quick lunch. I recently became an owner and love that I'm supporting a local business and local farmers. Back in the day, we used to spend roughly 25% of our income on food. Now, it's a paltry 10%. I don't mind spending a little more for food I feel good about, and that I feel is good for my body. Thanks, Food Front! -

I love co-ops. Well, not enough to be a member of any. But I love them nonetheless. I can't really afford to do all of my shopping at co-ops (probably because I'm not a member) but for stellar produce, great deli food, and all sorts of crazy healthy, local, and sustainable foodstuffs - Food Front does it... in spades.
This is totally the place I stop when I'm in NW and I need some good, wholesome, quick food; when I need to grab wine, cheese, or other gourmet goodies to bring to a party; or when I am simply needing something that mainstream grocers like Safeway or any other store in the area can't provide, be it drinks, prepared food, or groceries.
I never mind paying more for food when the $$ stays local and supports community. Especially when the products I'm getting are delicious and good for me.
Yay for this amazing store. If it were closer to my house I would be here so much more often.
Oh, and the deli food is pretty solid.Listed in: KILL ALL PLANTS!!, Grocery Stores, Healthying it up

It is a pretty awesome little store. You can get most of your ingredients and groceries here. The only disappointing thing about Food Front is that they lack a quality meat selection. I was hoping to find whole or any) organic chickens, grass fed beef (not ground) and organic bacon. None of those exist at this location, unfortunately.
It is just a step down from PCC in the Seattle area, but a great convenient location. And their organic produce section is not bad at all.
I'll stick to Fred Meyer for organic chickens, seems to be the only place in town that I have found. -

I went into this co-op to pick up a few things for a picnic and left with really mixed feelings. Like any co-op this one has a great selection of local, organic, delicious, vegan-friendly, gluten-free, you name it, foods. The staff presence is felt, but not overwhelming. I felt that there was always someone available to answer a question, yet I didn't feel watched. I found some delicious and affordable produce - apples and salads that were just great. The bread selection was great as well. Yay for all the great things about this place!
However I also had a few bad experiences... The cheese I got tasted like the refrigerator it sat in, which made me question the quality of the product, and the care being taken in maintaining the cheese display. If I'm paying $6 for a couple of ounces of cheese, I want it to actually taste like cheese. On that note, the place is pricier than some other co-ops I've been to. I understand that the economy isn't the best these days, but there's got to be a little more reasonable choices at your local store.
They do accept EBT, which is nice. However, you have to announce it to the whole store in order to use it. Something that putting the SNAP benefits on an EBT card was supposed to eliminate. The check-out clerk seemed monotone and unenthused about working there, and most certainly ended my shopping experience on a mediocre note.
I'd definitely come back to this co-op, but not without some reservations. -
Review from Ashley C.
Although it's catered to organic and local grocery consumers, it's quite pricey. Carbon footprint would say local equals cheaper but that is not the case. However, it's good to support local businesses.
I go here when I need something immediately without the drive, but at times, I find the drive necessary if it doesn't break the bank. -

i want to love this place sooo bad. I love co-ops, they have more local and organic food than I know what to do with, but this place is so ridiculously overpriced! The sandwiches at the deli never come out as the tasty way that I imagine them to and the deli selections are at least $1-2/lb more expensive than other co-ops.
I really want to support this store and everything it is about, but when I can walk out of Freddie's with $10+ in my pocket for an average store visit, I have to go their way. -

I've been staring at the Star-O-Meter, scrolling back and forth between 4 and 5, for far too long so I'm just going to get on with it. I would walk much farther than the one block from my house to shop at Food Front but it is oh-so nice to be able to run over there for that "D'OH!" moment lacking ingredient during dinner prep and be able to leave the pot on simmer. While I can't say they always have everything I want, their stock is quite diverse.
I find the staff helpful and friendly and (as an owner) I'm dismayed by the reports of reviewers who have experienced otherwise. I also find the staff to be knowledgeable. I trust the produce folks to steer me toward the best, tart apple. I trust the judgment of the wine guy to steer me toward that bargain bottle with the characteristics I seek. I trust the supplements folks to know about their offerings. The deli has some amazing prepared foods that can make for a quick, delicious meal. Thank goodness for the bulk section.
In my experience, criticism regarding pricing is sometimes warranted but I do some comparison shopping and have often found a level playing field. I feel good spending my money there.

After reading, "This Little Yelper Went to Market," I was reminded that I needed to update my review for Food Front.
I don't know what changed, but for the past several months I've felt welcomed here. So much so that I became a member because I wanted to support them, and my community.
Many of the checkers still aren't the most friendly bunch, but they are monotonously scanning items all days, so I should cut them some slack. Not to look down upon checkers, my job is no more glamorous than that.
An area where this store shines above a regular store is the products they carry, focusing on local goods, and their comment board. If there is an item you want in the store, but do not see it available, they will do what they can to make sure they begin carrying that item. And they do it in a timely fashion.
There are still errors with being charged twice for things, but there is significant improvement and that's all I can ask for. Thanks Food Front!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I LOVE FOOD FRONT.
I do. I do.
I do not feel uncomfortable being there (have not as of yet experienced any judgmental looks or eyerolls I seem to get at other co-ops when I am unfamiliar with some product or food) and the staff, while likely kind of bored (or just blazed) , is pretty helpful.
It is a bit of a trek for me to get there these days since I live on the other side of the river, but I gladly find excuses to go there and usually head straight for the bulk section (which is fab) or, more likely, their deli counter to fill out a Build-Yer-Own-Sandwich....
Oh, tummy rumbles, do you want to go to Food Front? Yes you do! Okay, we're off!
The only thing I dislike about this place, is the tiny as heck parking lot.
Yeah, I know it's not green or whatever to have a car, kill your cars blah blah blah, but I move a lot. And with a lot of books and a dog, a car is handy. While the parking lot itself has a high turn over rate with folks getting their groceries, just be ready to look for parking on the street. -

This place is super sweet, they have a huge selection of fresh made, frozen and bulks that just blows McWholeFoods outta the competition. This is a cooperative which means that it is so totally hippy friendly and it also gets the "Portland Thumbs Up & Wink" from all of us that Heart Portland for Who & What it is... Wholesome! Which has just triggered a question in me that now needs further inquiry... Is Portland a He or a She City? OMG I Don't know? I'm sure there's plenty of Masculine as well as Feminine Spirit here but which is more predominant? I'll leave you to ponder that for a while, but in the meantime head on down to this great Co-op to get your vegan and or grass fed on.

I'm a member and I love it here. They have unique items I can't find elsewhere and a great selection of hemp milk. I always find everything I need at this co-op and more! Being a member has so many benefits so I would encourage you to become one if you shop here often enough. They have numerous HUGE member discount days and fun events/tastings. Another plus of being a member....everyone knows your name! And you know everyone's name as well...plus, you run into a lot of friendly people you see often when grocery shopping and begin to build an even stronger sense of community in the neighborhood. Luv Portland.

I will openly admit that I am biased in my review because one of my best friends (who is also my roommate!) is one of the many stellar people employed by Food Front.
To put it succinctly, I love this place. They have a very decent selection of products at fair prices and a super awesome staff to help you find things and to make recommendations (I've had several tasty bottles of wine as a result.) Their prepared food section is also highly recommended - I know it tastes good when eaten straight out of the container with a fork when I wake up in the morning and find it in my fridge. Thanks, Food Front for letting your employees take home bulk items that people no longer want, free loaves of bread, and leftovers from your deli section!
Through no action of my own I've sampled pasta dishes, salads, soups, breads, junk food, fruit, nuts, and other goodies courtesy of this lovely establishment.
Have I mentioned that their staff is awesome? Well, they are. -

There is only one real reason I go to Food Front, and that is to get food for lunch during the work week. They have a pretty good build-to-order sandwich menu (including vegetarian Tofurky slices), but aside from that I usually leave disappointed. They lack the most in their soup options. They almost always sound appealing, always have a vegetarian option, but are very rarely any good! This being the Northwest, a good soup is always appreciated on a cool Fall or Winter day. So come on, Food Front. Do me a solid.
Apart from that, the grocery section of Food Front is small but good. They carry your typical co-op selection, and they have a pretty decent supplement/vitamin section. Don't expect them to carry all the brands you're used to seeing at Whole Foods or New Seasons, as this is a much smaller store. I have always found the service to be friendly. -

Portland, OR
Food Front is one of a handful of great cooperative groceries in town located at the periphery of the Northwest quadrant. Peddling organic local produce, natural foods, etc., it appears to be par for the course in the cooperative grocery world. However, there are two things that set Food Front heads above its local competition.
1) The Sandwich Bar
Head to the back of the store to the deli and grab a BUILD-YOUR-OWN-SANDWICH form. Turns out that these are among my favorite sandwiches in the entire city! The baked tofu is great, and I love the horseradish, cranberry sauce, varied mustards, etc. Basically I love condiments. This is a great place to pick up a custom picnic and head to Forest Park to nibble on great sandwiches.
2) Mount Rose Apples
Every fall, Food Front seems to be the only place in the world to sell Mount Rose Apples. These magical apples appear small, albeit normal from the outside. Take a bite though, and you'll find that the apple meat inside is HOT PINK! I believe they're organic, so it's a bit of a head scratcher why these apples are such a beautiful shade of pink, but every fall I make it a point to stock up on Mount Roses.
You'll amaze your friends. -

I often go to Food Front because it's convenient to my house and I live in SE. The #15 bus takes me from door to door and when it's raining, that's great.
I have actually been there when they had organic tomatoes for $4.50 a pound. Yup, that's $4.50. That's barely 2 tomatoes. Anyway, I made a comment about that at the register and the checker was very rude when she said, "Well, this isn't Fred Meyer you know". I couldn't believe she actually said that, even though she apologized, and I didn't go back for awhile. I don't think she works there anymore. I go back anyway and I don't care about their attitude. They have what I want and that's that. -

AW YEAH!!!!!!!!!
This is the grocery store you wish you had in your hood. Fresh and wholesome everything, tons of options, neat treats that are good for you and hard to find and.... the crown jewel... the DELI that carries vegan and non-vegan products side by side and will actually mix them for you. Two thumbs up and a snap because FFC is too cool for just a regular 5-star. This place rocks!!! -

I loved this store! So many awesome products! And cute plants and herbs that you can take home to grow. It's great that it was local and super close to our hotel.
The best thing about this place was the yummy yogurt selection. I want to come back to Portland just to pick up some more!
And it gives you such a good feeling to support a small local business that is so community oriented! I wish we had more places like this in Vancouver. I also wish they sold Nancy's yogurt and So Delicious fermented coconut milk in Vancouver. -

The best thing about Food Front is the deli. Everything I've had there was wonderful. Including the vegan chicken salad, and I'm not vegan!
As for the rest, a lot of the produce isn't fresh. I've had strawberries and other fruit go off fairly quickly. It's also very expensive, with a mix of typical brands for milk and Ben and Jerry's for ice cream. Reputable? Ben and Jerry's is owned by Unilever.
The staff are pretty friendly, they have a lot of events, samples and an interesting selection of food. Really though, Trader Joe's isn't far off and is much cheaper. -

The main reason I go to Food Front is because I'm in the area and if I need some fresh fruit or veggies, it's my place. I don't think of it all the time though so I think that says something.
On that note, I would say that this place is great for just that. Fresh, organic, sustainable fruits and vegetables. I have heard their deli is great but never tried it...maybe next time.
It's pretty spendy, for someone on my budget anyway, so I tend to avoid it when I am going to buy more than a couple things. The bulk section is pretty good and you can find really interesting things there.
My hubby likes their wine selection, there's a range in prices and styles. Service is pretty standard, they're not overly obnoxiously nice but they're not rude either. They're just helpful when you need them which is my preference always!
I'm not a part of the co-op so no comments on that.
Oh and the freaking parking lot is maddening! It's tiny, that's all. Ok so I had to squeeze one gripe in....Listed in: My 'hood

If you're looking for a cute, friendly, coop that supplies you with many of your basic cooking needs at low prices look no further.
Food front has a super friendly and helpful staff that can help you with anything, and a wide variety of seasonal produce that is super fresh!
I also love the deli counter here. If you are a vegetarian, then welcome to deli case heaven. The selection changes daily and includes every genre of food. Also sandwhiches are made to order. -

I love this place.
Super friendly.
Local.
Totally into the community and vice versa.
Yummy wine.
Killer sales on local seasonal produce. I heart veggies.
Never out of Kombucha.
The prices are definitely not Freddy's, but the extra you pay on some stuff does really good things... like supporting local businesses, farmers, awesome employees, sustainable practices, etc. -

I used to live 2 blocks from the food front...always an astounding collection of ready to eat raw desserts...organic produce, random herbs/houseplants offered at different times in the year, random gardening tools and things for the kitchen...Food Front has a little of everything. It has a super old school vibe to it; near the deli feels like a supermarket from the 80's. I don't know, I just think it's in stark contrast to the beige, wood trim gymnasiums known as whole foods. I just remembered the 80's are back, I guess that makes this place awesome.

Here is the deal.
The place, a Cooperative grocery store, sits perfectly in Northwest Portland. The store prodes itself on offering local products.
Price:
Very responsible for organic and local goods.
Service:
Really quick. And surprisingly the place, although the aisles are a little narrow, it is not overloaded with patrons making it very easy and enjoyable to shop.
Parking:
Lot and street parking.
Little tip:
Nice selection of local wines.
You've just been yelped in. -

What an awesome concept and what a great result. I love Food Front Co-op. The location is small, intimate, well staffed, friendly, welcoming and has excellent items to choose from. This is my preference for shopping locations- if I can find it here, that's where I'll go.
it is a bit pricier than if you goto a large grocery store. The reason is that you're buying from reputable growers who practice sustainability. And sometimes that costs a bit more. But to me, it's worth it.
My favorite thing: the fresh milk in the glass quart containers. I've never had milk so delicioius. My husband, who grew up on a dairy, says this reminds him of childhood. We adore this milk.
My least favorite thing: that I'm not always finding local produce, even when I can find it at the Saturday Farmers Market. Case in point: this past weekend i went to Farmers market and there were leeks everywhere. You couldn't shake a stick without hitting a leek. So I thought "I'll not buy any now, but instead will go buy my leeks at Food Front." But when I got to Food Front later that day, the leeks available were from California. I understand that sometimes you need to source farther when the local produce isn't available, but shouldn't we be fetching our produce as local as possible whenever possible?
But regardless, I feel so good every time I spend money here. I'm supporting sustainability and a neighborhood business that I fully believe in. -

I do love how everything here is fresh and organic, but compared to the bigger chains or markets, this place isn't something to rave about. I do wish a store like this was near my home, only because of the concept. My main complaint is that we bought fruits from here twice, and each time there were molding pieces.

I love the selection of organic groceries at Food Front, but could live without the attitude from the checkout help. If only I could see a glimmer of a smile, hear a pleasant hello or receive any type of acknowledgment when I walked through the door I would be more inclined to shop here. But all that attitude makes the food here taste a wee bit bitter!

This co-op is quite genuine and offers just enough of the basics. I'm a fan of bulk, there's no excuse for buying new plastic containers of anything these days. They sell bulk tea (very quality tea), epsom salts (for baths), honey, tamari, oil, sugars, and a plethora of dry goods. And unlike New Seasons, there's a selection of oils to choose from. They even sell plants and herbs from a local nursery. Customer service is a crap shoot. Unfortunately there are a few unhappy grumps working here, avoid them and you will have a pleasant experience.

My kids and I love the selection at Food Front. You won't have as much selection there as you would at New Seasons. But if you want a grocery store that is small, intimate, has a helpful staff, fresh organic produce, has other organic goods, is very child-friendly (I have two kids in diapers), AND has better prices than New Seasons, then this is the grocery store for you! We have been shopping here at least 1-2 times a week...until lately...
What bothers me about Food Front is that every time I go (literally, every time!) and check out, the checker looks up at least 3 of my produce items. And EVERY time, I am over charged on the produce. This is so frustrating, I am a "bargain hunter" mama. I am always looking for good deals on organic products, and I find that the prices here are GREAT! Don't get me wrong. I don't mind paying some good $$ for organic goods, but charge me the correct price for heavens sake! Two weeks ago (the last time I was there), the girl checker looked up EVERY SINGLE PRODUCE ITEM! My kids were screaming in the store, ready to leave. I thought I was going to be out of my mind if the checker was going to look up every produce on her little cheat sheet. I asked her to correct a couple of items, and after a couple of times, I think she got a little annoyed with me.
Why can't the checkers memorize the produce numbers like they do at Safeway or Fred Meyers? It's NOT that big of a grocery store. I understand that they have like 5 different oranges and then several different ways it is grown (conventional, local organic, organic...). I hate being overcharged, and I hate waiting longer than I need to to check out. We haven't been back in two weeks. I'm not sure if I am going to continue shopping there.Comment from Valerie K. of Food Front Cooperative Grocery 5/21/2009

I shop here almost every day. This little store really has a great selection. You may not find a brand name you're looking for, but you'll find something similar that is probably better for you and the environment too. The produce is amazing. The deli is good too. A great place to get a sandwich. I sometimes pick up a whole roasted chicken on the way home and they are always tasty. The prices may be more than you'd find at a chain grocery store, but it is worth it for the quality.

I love vegan cooking and I live in the NW area, so this place is the perfect super market for me to get some seitan or vegan mock meat. Their lunch bar is pretty awesome. I like how they have the daily lunch special, from vegan mac and cheese to vegetable curry. Too bad their kombutcha is 50 cent more than wholefoods. They also don't have Dave's Killer Bread. Try their vegan chicken salad, that's my all time favourite lunch dish. They also have vegan sushi, cupcake, and pie/cheesecake. Cheap too!

I have never been to the NW locale, but the one in Hilsdale/Mulnomah Village is one of my favorite places to shop (when I have a little extra money and time). They have a superior deli, an ecletic and unique bulk foods section, and friendly, fast service. The only downside is I always wind up spending more money and time (so much to look at!) than I intend on. But I am never disapointed!

I really love that there is a co-op in NW PDX and I will continue to occasionally frequent it (when I am in the area). They have a great selection of wine and their bulk food section is decent.
However, I wish their management was better at hiring employees. I have not had very much luck with them (with the recent exception of a French (?) guy). They don't seem happy with their work and I almost ALWAYS get charged incorrectly.
If I lived in NW, I would shop here all the time just to support a co-op over chain stores. But luckily I don't ... -

I've been going here for a few years, and I've become more and more of a fan over time. The ready-to-go foods are awesome, the sandwich selection is great, the prices aren't bad at all considering it's not a Safeway or Fred Meyer, and the staff seem to just get better over time.
They have a good selection of beers and wines, and I'm a big fan of the Hot Lips pizza slices they sell that you can reheat.
My only complaint is that the spicy baked tofu is too good, I think I'm becoming addicted. When I get there and they're out of it I'm always very disappointed.
