Saturday brunch. A group of 8.
...a group of 8 hungry and slightly hungover twenty-something-year-olds.
Fancy Mexican food?! This NorCal chica is a bit skeptical but I will give it a try.
We are seated towards the front of the small restaurant by our friendly server. I look around and there really isn't a lot of room in here. There's a few small tables at the front of the restaurant, a bar to the left, and a few more small tables towards the back. Cozy but not overly cramped. This is a good start.
I look through the menu and it's a toss up between the Huevos Rancheros and the Huevos Divorciados. How did I choose?! The words "crispy bacon" for the Huevos Divorciados dish.
If you know me, I am a pescatarian that dibs and dabs with bacon. So what does that make me now? A pescabacontarian?! Don't judge.
Each brunch entree comes with a complimentary mimosa, which come in hibiscus, guava, and mango. Yes please. :)
We order our food. We wait. We get surprised with a complimentary big bowl of guacamole with tortillas and tortilla chips. Seriously?! Guac is the key to my heart. How did you know?! Well, we had a reservation but had to wait around. The server felt bad so yay to free yummy guac!
My Huevos Divorciados dish arrives. It isn't how I pictured it but I am intrigued by its presentation. Imagine from the bottom up. At the bottom level, a crispy tortilla. Next, black beans with queso fresco and crema. Next, BACON. :D Next, sunny side up eggs. Finally, salsa verde on one side of the eggs, on the other side, ranchera sauce.
We all wipe our plates clean. Mama would be proud.
We leave with our bellies warm, happy, satisfied...into the first New York snow.
Heaven. -

I used to live in the neighborhood up until about a year ago and I have been here a few times and have generally really liked it. The food was delicious and the service was fine, not perfect but acceptable...
This Saturday I was in the neighborhood so I decided to go to brunch there with a friend.. It was a DISASTER! They told my friend it would be a 40 min wait. I went in to double check and then they told me 15 mins. We waited at the bar. That's when we waited 45 mins and watched while 3 sets of 2 people walked in and got seated right away. Then when we finally got seated, swished in the corner mind you, they messed up my friend's order. She specifically requested to have no sauce on her breakfast burrito and it came out with tons of sauce on it. When she said something, they acted like they had no idea what she was talking about. She decided to eat it anyway to avoid waiting and dealing with any more confusion.. Then they didnt stop by to check on us until we were finished with our meal... Also, I had a coupon from Blackboard Eats that they wouldn't accept in the end. They claimed that the discount would only work on regular entrees not the brunch entrees. It did not mention anything about that on the website- It just claimed that it not be used for lunch and it had to be for 1 entree each or 2 appetizers for dinner or BRUNCH. Who orders regular entrees for Brunch anyway?!
In the end the food was pretty good. There were too many sauces on my brunch, and that's from someone who likes sauce.. Never going back again. -

Here's my thing with this place. When it first opened, I loved it. The drinks were delicious, the food was amazing and I couldn't get enough. However, the last two times I've been...I've been disappointed.
The service is going down. They'll bring the apps right before the meal, which completely defeats the purpose of ordering apps, right? Secondly, once you have your drinks you'll never see the waiter again. A different person will bring you your food and hopefully you have everything you need at that point because you'll literally have to find someone if you need anything else.
The drink quality has gone down. Food is still good, but the is meh.
Guess I'll keep searching for a decent Mexican place in the city. Here's hoping. -

Went for dinner around 9:00 on a Wednesday. We had to wait about 10-15 for a table but we waited at the bar. Great service both at the bar and at the table. The guacomole can't be beat and the carne asada will make you believe in God.

Every time i come here i am blown away by the delicious, unique food and wonderful margaritas such as the Sanguina and the Rosalita. We love the guacamole, the pork adobo, the shrimp and scallop enchiladas, the duck zarape, and the mole special when they have it.

I love Mexican food, and have been looking for a new favorite place in Park Slope. My friend had the tacos, which she enjoyed. I had the carne asada, and it was excellent. I loved the mushroom sauce on it, too. We had some guacamole with chips, too - yum yum! The only reason I did not give it five stars is the employee who greeted me at the door was incredibly rude. I arrived before my friend, and told him she would be there in less than five minutes. He tried to sit me at the bar - NO ONE else was in the restaurant so it's not like they had a problem saving me a table. My friend arrived in less than five minutes and we were waited on by another employee who was great. Maybe it was just an off day for the first guy?

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Fonda while bike riding around Park Slope. We didn't have a chain so the host unchained his own bike and helped chain ours to the rack... thus began the best brunch and service I've had in a long time!
Their patio is sublime. Quiet, tidy, and cozy you can enjoy the weather while listening to quiet latin music and munching on Guacamole that is simply too good to be true.
We had the Huevos Rancheros with a guava mimosa. My Californian boy has a soft spot for Mexican food and he tends to be a bit of a snob about it. He and I both agree it was honestly the best egg dish we've ever had.
I'd come here over and over again if it were in my area. Highly recommend.
Edit: I've recently been to Rosa Mexicana in Manhattan and I still stick by my previous statements. Best egg dish. -

The food is very good, certainly the best Mexican food in Park Slope and you pay for the quality. The place is so dark that I had to break out my phone to read the menu (I was not alone) and to see my food. It was so loud in the cheek by jowl dining room I had to lean forward to hear my companion. The tight tables, the volume and darkness of the room, robbed the meal of any pleasure. We bailed before dessert.

I lived in Austin for a few years and always enjoyed Fonda San Miguel. I was excited when this place opened; it is apparently the same owner. The food is pretty consistent and it is pretty good. Guacamole and mini corn tortillas are delicious. However, brunch was a bit of a bust. I have the blackboard eats app and signed up for the discount at Fonda. It clearly states 30% off of brunch. The waiter wouldn't honor the discount. The manager decided it wasn't worth their while. If you sign up for one of these things; honor them. It's pretty simple. Our waiter was unbending; we finally had him take off our coffees (which were overpriced anyway) and paid the full amount.

How can Fonda be so, so, so good? No idea, but it is. Don't know where to begin on my raves about the menu (oh! and cocktail list!) but don't skip the guacamole. It's cramped and you're probably going to wait for a table any weeknight, but for simple food this flavorful and well-prepared, it's worth it.

I wanted to wait until coming back here again before writing a review to make sure it's actually as good as I thought it was. And as most people have discovered... it is.
The waitstaff knows the menu and aren't afraid to make smart recommendations or describe dishes. This is appreciated, as the menu is a bit adventurous for the South Slope and it's good to know stuff.
Despite it seeming like there is always a mid-scale Mexican place opening up, Fonda is really good with the food. I loved the nutty sauce on the seafood enchiladas, though I kind of wished it didn't completely cover the taste of the shrimp. I liked my pozole, and while I was willing to try it with chicken, it is much better with pork.
On the brunch side, the breakfast burrito is great. Plentiful, tasty, a bit spicy and very satisfying. And speaking of satisfying, their rice and beans have taste. It's clear they actually care about them, which in turn makes me happy. And the guac and chips are standard, but just fine.
I'm glad Fonda has raised the bar for Mexican in the neighborhood. We deserve good food. -
Review from Talia R.
Did I miss something? Staff was super nice and food was...fine. For me, Mexican inhabits 2 spheres: cheap, delicious tacos/texmex/street food or truly amazing rick bayless-style sit down dining. Fonda is trying to inhabit this between space and not sure it works. Quality of homemade ingredients like chips and tortillas is high, but a lot of what they're serving is just different permutations of rice and beans. Overcooked rice & beans at that.
Raves about the guacamole from my dining companions. I thought it was only ok, and not actually guac but more like very chunky avocado salad that does not go well with chips since it's not at all dipable. My shrimp dish was very overcooked and undersalted. Sauces on all meals were good.
Waiter was sweet, beer was cold. -

This place is awesome. Not only was the food amazing (the guacamole comes with homemade tortillas!) and the Camarones Adobados were one of the better things I've ever tasted... But the service was over the top. We took a gamble and brought our 1.5 yr old with us to dinner and it was one of those times where it just wasn't going to happen. She started to lose her mind right when our food came. We took turns eating but had to cut the visit short. They could see we were struggling with our toddler and packed up our food really quickly for us AND replenished tortillas and guacamole for our to-go bag. In hindsight they probably wanted to get rid of us but they sure did it gracefully :) We will definitely be back sans child.

AMAZING! Came here for a late brunch on Saturday and was blown away. Started out with some guacamole and then moved to the huevos divociados, which came with a free mimosa. All the food was great and the service was very good. We made a reservation which was a good idea because it gets pretty busy, Good ambiance and perfect serving sizes!

Some of the best Mexican food in NY. I'm a fan of Tex Mex but this is one step better. The chef was great and staff was very accommodating. We had the taquitos and guacamole to start. Carne Asada taquito was hands down the best beef taco I've had all year long. Maybe even the best I've had in NYC! The chicken taquitos was good but not as amazing as the carna asada.
The shrimp and scallop enchiladas were killer. The hazelnut mole was definitely an unexpected surprise. Spicy with a hint of sweetness. Plan on making this a regular hang. -

Upscale mexican - so prepare to pay the price. Very yummy, I am glad my boyfriend took me here one night. Perfect date spot, dimly lit and relaxed ambiance. The food is excellent. I had one of their special mole enchilada dishes, it had too much mole for my liking, but the chicken was cooked to perfection and overall I was very happy. If I could have the cheesy chorizo appetizer everyday for the rest of my life, I'd die a happy woman.

Have been walking by this place for months now. Finally had the chance to try it with a friend of mine who knows a thing or two about Mexican food. This is really some of the most delicious Mexican food I have had in a long long time. So sorry I waited so long to try this place. I liked it...mucho gusto!
Pulled this right off the menu to tell you what we shared:
DUCK ZARAPE Soft corn tortillas filled with braised duck with roasted tomato-habanero cream sauce
FISH SALPICON Chopped white fish with lime juice, onions, serrano chiles, cilantro and hand pressed corn tortillas.
EMPANADAS DE LANGOSTA Green corn masa empanadas filled with lobster, zucchini and cream served with tomatillo chile de arbol dipping sauce.
CHILES EN NOGADA: Only in September we serve the most traditional Chile relleno of mexico, a roasted poblano chile stuffed with pork and beef picadillo, almonds, raisins, peaches and apples, olives and capers covered in an almond-pecan sauce and dotted with pomegranate seeds
We both couldn't get enough of the tomato-habanero cream sauce on the duck. We were dipping the fish in it as well as everything else. So delicious. And the seasonal roasted poblano nogada is so amazing as well. Except if you are allergic to tree nuts, but it may be worth epi pen shot just to sample this wonderful concoction.
For Drinks
My friend had the GENJIBRE MARGARITA (Tanteo tropical tequila, cucumber ginger infusión, orange liquor & lime juice) and I had the MARGARITA CLASICA (Silver tequila, fresh lime juice and orange liquor). Both the drinks were delicious. I managed to chug down a second one with no problem.
All in all, the service was really excellent as well. Looking forward to trying more things on the menu at this local spot.Listed in: The New Hood List

I have been going to Fonda now since the opening. Sometimes it takes a while to get your food, but the quality is great!
Everyone I have taken to this spot has been happy with the food.
The brunch menu is very reasonable.
I am very happy that we have such a great upscale Mexican spot in S Slope. -

Two words: tamarindo margarita! This drink was amazing, with the rim of the glass coated with tamarind seeds.
Fonda is a cute little spot, very dark inside, and the food is really good. They have some of the best guacamole I've had in NYC. We were not very hungry when we went there so we ordered smaller dishes - BF had taquitos, I had flautas. Both were authentically delicious. I look forward to going back and trying more. One word of caution is that they are very small, very popular and very busy which means a bit of a wait for tables and a sense of urgency to turn the tables over quickly. This is not a place to linger. But the food is so good you'll eat more than you plan so go for a nice walk afterwards. -
Review from Dana B.
I suppose I should say that I ate there for lunch, and I know lunch and dinner services, not to mention menus, are quite different. I sat out on the patio in the back on one of the first days of fall.
We started with Gucamole. Freshly made, it was delicious! I can be a gucamole snob, and theirs lived up to my standards! The chips were good--thin, not too salty--and they brought out a small ramakin of salsa (that's not the normal size of salsa, is it?). I ate every bit of that guac and enjoyed every moment.
I ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Most of the lunches (aside from the entrees) come with a choice of a house salad, sweet potato fries, or tortilla soup. I chose the tortilla soup. Tortilla soup is one of those foods that many claim to make, but the utilization in different restaurants is usually quite drastic. The soup wasn't bad. It was smoky, and slightly spicy, brown broth, with strips of tortilla. I suppose I was expecting something more along the lines of chicken tortilla soup, but it was good regardless.
If I was expecting more with the soup, I was expecting more with the sandwich. It said it came with black bean spread, mayo, jalenpenos, and avocado. I didn't get any avocado in mine. I ate it, it was flavorful, but where was my avocado?!
Overall, it was a good experience. Great? Not quite sure. I'd need to give it another go--this time at dinner--to get a real grasp on the place -

Delicious delicious delicious! Wandered to Fonda after reading its good Yelp reviews and was not disappointed! Great guacamole and amazing margaritas. The spinach enchiladas were amazing and still on my mind! It was busy when we went, so reservations are definitely advised if it is a weekend. Yum!

This place deserves the reputation it has for A+ Mexican food. The guac was spot on and comes with good tortilla chips. The red sangria is good but could use more fruit. Their menu is somewhat limited, especially for the vegetarian/pescatarian diner but what they do, they do very well.
Make reservations if you are going here on a weekend night. The place was slammed at 9:30 on a Saturday. We decided to eat outside on the patio.
Our waiter, although very friendly, was constantly trying to push us to order more apps/drinks, which got pretty annoying. He spilled sangria twice. The busboys swooped in on the table immediately after we got the check and while we were still finishing our drinks. We didn't appreciate being basically shooed out the door. I would give a higher rating if it wasn't for the shoddy service. That said, I would go here again. -

When the Geographically Undesirable Boyfriend moved deeper into Brooklyn, the first thing I did was look for highly rated Mexican places within walking distance of his new place. La Fonda popped right up and we have now been twice. Both times, we experienced awesome, authentic (very spicy salsa! whew!), delicious Mexican food and really top notch service. All of the men (I've only seen men) who work here are very friendly and accomodating.
Happy hour is at the bar only, prices kick ass ($5 margs and sangria, which comes in a pint glass and is deeeeeliciosa), and there are a few small, yummy plates. The bar tender is super friendly and quick. The rosalita margarita on the rocks is wonderful. I am admittedly ub-sessed with agua de jamaica, and when it is added to a margarita, I am one happy girl (even if I did have to cross a river).
The first time we came, we had dinner and both really enjoyed our meals. My boyfriend loves the spicy salsa and the fresh, warm corn tortillas they serve with the guacamole, which is also excellent (and only $5 during hh). This is definitely the best Mexican I have found in Park Slope so far. -

The enchiladas de mole negro are out of this world. I am always wary to order mole negro in NYC because mediocre mole...what's the point? Their sauce is complex and rich, the shredded chicken is so tender and flavorful. I have been a few times and the enchiladas keep appearing on the daily specials menu. Get it! Amazing for brunch too, lovely waitstaff, an overall delight!

Made it early for the Happy Hour. The guacamole was very good. I think we asked for medium. It wasn't that spicy so next time we'll probably ask for Spicy. The chips are great and so were the Taquitos. The only issue I had was that you can only order drinks/food at the bar for Happy Hour. All the seats were filled by the time we got there and so the 4 of us stood trying to drink and eat. It was a bit cramped. I don't really understand why they can't serve us at the table since Happy Hour ends at 7pm anyway. It might even entice those who were only going to come for the HH to stay longer for dinner if they were already seated at a table.
Anyway, the food was very good. We sat in the garden and itt was really nice. The Duck Zarape was really good. I ordered the Pescado Relleno which was good. Overall, we had a great meal. -

Fonda has restored my faith in NYC Mexican food. If you want gourmet Mexican like you used to get in Texas or California, this is the place. Everything brought to the table was excellent, but the most outstanding items were the guacamole, the Pollo Norteño, and the black beans. The tortillas tasted freshly made.
I feel compelled to point out that others writing reviews here have said Fonda is too expensive, and I have to disagree. I think the prices are right on target, especially considering how much better it is than other Mexican places around and the prices charged for entrees at comparable 'nice' restaurants in Park Slope. Just because it's Mexican doesn't mean it has to be cheap, folks. -

The waiter was friendly. The food was served hot and fresh.
My husband was disappointed with the small size of the taquitos but I guess that's why they are called taquitos! (little tacos)
I had the Sopa de Tortilla which was very delicious.
For my main course, I had the Fonda Burger - Guajillo beef burger with avocado slices, pico de gallo, smoky salsa and sweet potato fries.
I asked for well done and the beef was definitely not well done - all pink from the inside but even though I prefer well done, I will eat meat that is not well done so I ate it anyway. I liked the avocado and pico de gallo on the burger but I was not a fan of the smoky salsa.
The sweet potato fries were good. But I felt something was missing from them...
I think I would go back for the Sopa de Tortilla and maybe to try something else on their menu. Their food was well prepared and fresh, which is what I liked and the waitstaff was attentive (minus the meat not being well done). -

A friend who lives in Brooklyn brought me here. It's a very cute space with a romantic atmosphere. The food was amazing and fresh. The quac was chunky and delicious - if you like really smooth guac squeezed out of a bag at taco bell... go to taco bell. This place is super authentic so if you're expecting crispy tacos I recommend going somewhere else. I also had their version of ceviche which was mouth-watering and all the home-made hot sauces really added to the dish. Our waiter was very pleasant but since the place is so small 3 of us were sat at what really should be used for 2. I will definitely come back next time i'm in the area.

When it comes to Mexican food, I agree with most people here, Fonda is pretty awesome. It's become my favorite brunch spot - just try their Huevos Mexicanos and the guacamole, you'll know what I'm talking about. The other thing that fascinates me about the place is that it manages to be reasonable in pricing as compared to all the other places in 7th avenue. I mean, even the Thai joint down the street charges more for dinner. The Tres Leches dessert is divine. The French press coffee is a pleasant change from the bland watery coffee you get at brunch time. The vibe is good, too.

This is an update. Fonda has really stepped it up in terms of their hosting and service. I've been there twice recently (last time was Saturday) and the vibe of the place - even when busy - was orderly and happy, nor rushed with disgruntled folks as in previous times. The service feels fresher, faster, friendlier and more customer-focused. A great job all around!

We've been coming here for a while and it has become sort of a tradition for my wife to have Sunday brunch at Fonda. The service is always friendly and the owner keeps a keen eye to make sure that tables are happy. The prices here are a bit higher than most Mexican restaurants but again the food is of a higher quality than your average MX restaurant... It can be a tad noisy but it's popular so that's understandable.
If I have any complaint about Fonda it is with their lunch menu which we tried once. The food was fine but the restaurant really pared down things to the point where we were basically have quesadillas served to us on a plate. They tasted fine but it was really sub-par in comparison to their dinner and even brunch menu - the plates were just too simple. In defense of Fonda they had just begun trying out the lunch idea so maybe they have improved upon it by this point.
Forgot to mention - the food here is great & don't skip out on dessert! -

I can only review for their happy hour, since that's the only time I've been here.
They have $5 margaritas/sangrias and $5 appetizers (guacamole and two other options, I believe). My friend and I had the classic margaritas and the guacamole.
HOLY CRAP were the margaritas strong. Which. . is good. I think. Except the alcohol completely overpowered the margarita mix so I felt like I had ordered straight tequila. Like I said, this could be good or bad, depending on the person. I thought it was bad because I like my margaritas to be a little girly. . .that is, to taste like ACTUAL margaritas and not a glass of tequila and ice. Oh well. I can't complain that much. What if I come again and it's too watered down?
The guacamole was decent but we had ordered mild and it was a bit too spicy for me. The good thing is that the portion was huge. And it was very freshly made, lots of guacamole chunks.
SO I guess if you like really strong margaritas and spicy guacamole, come here? -

I've been here twice and both times were exceptional. This is the Mexican food you've been looking for. I love their appetizers and entrees and the drinks are fabulous too. Come before 7, sit at the bar and have happy hour with cheap beer and fresh margaritas and a spattering of apps that give lots of bang for the buck. I don't eat guacamole but everyone else loved it and they serve a giant portion for a fraction of what Dos Caminos charges.
Every time I've been here it's been a veritable feast because you can't just pick an entree. The appetizers (which are well portioned) entrees, desserts and after dinner drinks are all reasonably priced and fabulously made. Go here. You will be so glad you did! -

I had previously had a horrible experience here, where after patiently waiting 20 minutes for a table, we were basically told they were closing, get out, right as we ordered. It was around 9pm. The hipster waitress was rude and overall we were annoyed, plus bummed because the food was good and we live practically next door.
Finally convinced my husband to give it another try two years later, thank goodness we did! Food was amazing and the service was completely changed. We had a very attentive waiter on a busy Sunday night, and it seemed like the entire staff was family - or at least in a very good groove. Fonda certainly got its act together, I will definitely go back!1 Previous Review: Show all »

There would be 4 stars here if they didn't try to sell a Mexican 3 tiny tacos with only a pinch of grilled skirt steak, some onions, and cilantro for $8!!! Come on! My mama would slap you in the face with her Virgin
Mary!!
BUT margaritas are ok and the atmosphere is cooler than any other 7th ave Park Slope Mexican restaurant.
Just be honest about your mark up! I know this would be more because of the hip scene but for the cost of an entree I could just cook my mom's recipes for a few weeks!

The food was delicious. Being from TX, I am always looking for Mexican restaurants in the city to get my fix. Until Fonda, I have been sorely disappointed (example: Lobo in park slope is not good whatsoever). Although Fonda did not serve my fave element of Mexican food, queso (probably because queso dip is actually Tex Mex rather than true Mexican...but whatev, I wanted it), the whole meal was delicious. The guac was fresh tasting and the chips were great. We also tried a jicama salad and the duck zarape appetizer, which were pretty good. However, the star item of the night was definitely the chicken enchiladas bandera. It tasted so fresh. A bad point of the meal was when my brother found a piece of plastic cooked into his enchiladas (turned out to be the packaging for their tortillas. Side note: it'd be cooler if they made their own tortillas like at Juventino). But, the staff quickly brought him another meal and gave us free tres leches cake for dessert. Win.
If you can, sit in the back patio. The inside of the restaurant was dark, loud, and crowded but outside was much more chill and really cute.
In my opinion, the only decent Mexican places in Park Slope are (a) Rachel's Taqueria and (b) Fonda. Fonda is significantly better than Rachel's (and significantly more expensive...), so this will be my go-to joint when the inevitable onset of an enchilada craving takes me over!
