I'm deeming this triathlon venue family friendly because it is only a few minutes drive from the Folsom Outlets. This venue also boasts some nice trails and beautiful scenery to enjoy while waiting for your racer to finish. There's also music and interesting vendors to check out after the race. I'm knocking it down a star though because the parking is such a challenge. If you go later and manage to get a spot, you're lucky. If you go early, get a spot and leave, you're not likely to find another space.
Fun stops on the way back to the Bay Area include the Nut Tree and the Jelly Belly Factory.
FIRST!!!
J&A Productions, Olympic Distance (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run). Ok, so this was 8/13, and I was pretty scared that the Sacramento heat was going to do me in. Luckily, the start time was early enough (~7) that we managed to avoid anything overly oppressive. That being said, the water IS cold (62 degrees?), and you DO need a wetsuit. THAT being said, the swim course (loop) seemed long as hell, and I don't know if it was lack of patrolling or what, but many swimmers seemed to skirt buoys altogether (god knows how that altered the results). The bike was flat and easy so one could probably really improve their PR at this race. I had read the run was "hilly", but I didn't think it was bad at all. Miles were well marked, and water stations plentiful. The fact that it was out-and-back on a little paved bike path was not too cool, however. The participants were not there to fuck around, so there wasn't a huge range of talent (either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view). Pre-race: bad. didn't matter that you had already registered, you were in a long slow line with everyone else, and we risked a late start time, but they managed to pull it off. Goody bag: didn't run out of small t-shirts, included some fun bars, water bottle. Post race party: pretty good buffet line of fruit and Mexican food that included vegetarian burritos (but where were the much needed kegs?). Results: STUPID. First off, they should have printed the damned things and posted them. No. Instead, it was on a computer that you had to wait in line for 20 minutes in order to view. And even then, they weren't conclusive, considering a huge bunch of people had missing run results due to a chip reading malfunction. But all in all, a well-run and fun race, however somewhat $$ ($104?).
