I got my hair cut from Kenny about one month ago. I have to say he is as good as many expensive stylists from SF area. $45 per cut may sound a lot but it is worth it. There's plenty of parking space in the parking lot. I have the last appointment on a Friday and the wait was not very long, about 10 min.

I really liked his attention to details, as well as refreshing cutting method. Before he starts cutting, he explained in detail on how he would make the cut. My hair is slightly curly and fuzzy, he patiently demonstrates to me on how to style properly.

My hair has never look better before. Thanks to Kenny!

Paul cut my hair and a really sweet girl washed it.  Paul recommended a conditioning treatment ($50) which I decided to go for.  I don't know that it did anything for me though.

Paul's regular cut for women costs $30.  He does not use a razor, which relieved me b/c so many of these asian places do that.  He actually did a good job cutting my hair, I could tell that he's experienced.

Now that I'm home... my hair hasn't been easy to style, but it is growing out nicely and I do like it.  I'll go again, but I'm not getting the conditioning treatment next time.

I think it is quite expensive.Kenny cut for me and it cost me $45! $5 for tips...and total is $50! I think Kenny is became popular now and he handling so many clients in one time and I think this will make him not realy concerntrate on me. I think he spent not more than 20mins on my haircut and it is quite expensive for the service.

My fiance who was on her way to having a haircut from hell got saved in the bottom of the 9th inning!

We went to the salon based on a friend's raving recommendation and was expecting great things.  We didn't make an appointment so naturally we got whoever was open.  Unfortunately that was our mistake.  That stylist did a horrible job on her hair and was obviously very uneven.  She was on verge of tears after checking herself out in the restroom mirror.  When it came to my turn the shampoo girl noticed how upset she was and asked.  Afterward she consulted with the owner and they promptly send Kenny to fix her hair.   In the end she loved it and they were apologetic about the experience.   It would've been a 1 star had we walked out the door and a 5 star if she didn't had to go thru the initial horrific experience.   Oh yeah, the owner cut my hair and she did a great job.  So the final score is a 4 star.  Ultimately it's a business that cares about its customer being satisfied.

I just got my hair cut by Kenny and he's great!!! He really knows his stuff and gave great advice on how to fix my hair on it's own.

I came in with uneven layers from a bad haircut and he was able to fix it and make it look good. Before he even started cutting he walked me through what he was going to do and asked me for my feedback. I never felt rushed.

The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was that I wish the salon had a full time person to answer the phone rather than Kenny having to keep going back and forth.  (for the record, he always apologized for having to step away. some people don't even care!).  Also, it was a little bit expensive ($40) but since I only go to get a haircut every 3 months, I think it's worth it.

Before going to Kenny I felt really down about my looks. I went in with a grown out pixie cut that had uneven layers, and he was able to turn in into a really cute crop cut! Kenny is awesome. He really makes sure that he understands what you want and that you understand what he's going to give you. I gave him a picture of the cut I wanted, and he gave me his honest opinion about it, and I'm so glad we went in a different direction! Kenny really knows what he is doing. I also have very think and naturally curly hair that most hair dressers find difficult to work with. Also, after he finished cutting and styling my hair, Kenny showed me how to properly style it.

Kenny is very sweet and has a very welcoming demeanor. I usually feel very awkward when getting my hair cut, but not with Kenny! The rest of the Focus Beauty staff was also very polite, courteous, and professional. They were always making sure that I was comfortable. The assistant that shampooed my hair was excellent and gave me a nice head message. I'm so glad that I've found a great hair dresser that I'll hopefully be returning to from now on!

KENNY- THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING ME FEEL BEAUTIFUL!

Few weeks later, my sister took me in to focus. I met Jennifer and she is great! Fixed the sloppy hair cut i got. I loved it! She is my NEW hair stylist every time i need a new hair cut. She is really sweet too.

I really like their professional attitude, very respectful, very honest with the customers.  I had Kenny cut my hair several times, and every next day after my haircut, there was always someone asking me where I had it done, and I've always referred them to Kenny, and so far everybody was VERY satisfied with my recommendation.

If you do have a dream hair style in your mind, go ahead and bring a picture to Kenny, I'm confident that he can give you something 90-95% similar; if he thinks that hair does not suit you, he for sure will let you know before he goes any farther..

Even if you do not have any idea about what hair style you want, just bring your "lousy" old hair to him, and I'm sure you will still walk out of his salon with a body of excitements about your new image...

They have various types of unique hair products as well; let them know the problems with your hair, too dry, too oily, split at the end...etc, they'll hook you up with the right product.

and.......by the way, other than being good stylists, Kenny and his assistant lil Alex also give pretty good jokes,  especially Alex~..^_~, but he seems very reserved about his "talent"......=\...oh well~....go make an appointment, and find out yourself.......408-807-6138....

The fact that I am using my sister's Yelp account - Jennifer Yin- to emphasize how much I love Kenny's expertise and his beautiful Focus Beauty Center demonstrates my genuine appreciation for him.

I have been a fan, loyal customer, and braggart of him for almost four-almost five- years now. Man...can this guy trim!!! He doesn't only trim, but colors. Wow! Can it be real? Yes, it is real.

As demonstrated by the photos I posted, this man is a true hair guru. He creates magic out of his very fingertips. I am usually very picky about hair. To be honest, most of the time, I don't think people have any idea what they're doing and make it even worse when they see you have a ;( look on your face. I mean, I know that's a little harsh but I've experienced more than enough dissapointments concerning hair.

Kenny has never once dissapointed me. He is professional, precise, hip, and everything you could ask for in a hairstylist. He does such an amazing job and has been trained froma all over including Japan to New York. He has trained with some major hair companies including Vidal Sassoon and Toni & Guy. Basically, this guy is no joke. He takes his work very seriously and goes above and beyond what it takes to make customers happy.

My sister and I have been going to him for years even when he first started out at the Focus Milpitas store in the McCarthy Ranch 99 area.
To be clear, we are not easy to please. We're very particular about certain things. Kenny just seems to do it for us.

We're lifetime supporters and avid fans.

Went there today for a last minute hair cut before Chinese new years, yeah... I kinda called but more kinda walked in for the the hair cut, i think it was a couple bucks more. oh wells, my fault. So I walked in, they took me to the back to get my hair shampooed, sat me down and dried my hair. Anne came almost right over even though she was working on another client, took care of my hair with only scissors and no buzzers. Thinned out my hair right so I can actually style it. Then she took me back to rinse off again to get the little hairs out and introduced me to hair wax which works way better then gel. She's very helpful and knowledgeable.

Brand new modern looking CHEAP hair salon chain.

I'm always looking for a cheap cut/style: starts at $15.

Will edit review post-cut.

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
Update 11/11/07:

3.65 stars.

Got my haircut two weeks ago and I actually like it.

The road to the $28 was one of boredom and anxiety.

Got there on a Friday at 3pm, waited till 315pm to get my hair shampooed and deep conditioned by a young guy who did not know how to shampoo or handle a person's head.

Two stylists were on staff, a middle aged Taiwanese woman and a younger hip Taiwanese male.

I shuddered when I found out I was in Vivian's hand's for the day.

During my wait I found a few hairstyles from the stacks of international and domestic magazines.

I showed Vivian my chosen cut, something with bangs and lots of layers.  I told her that I wanted one inch and to thin out my hair.

What I got 45 mins later: 3 inches off, a good cut and a Asian Style.

I got home and washed it out, and then restyled it.  I was happy that products were not even mentioned and the cut was merely $28.

I never tried Kenny, but pls remember not to let the owner (female) around 50s touch your hair!  She's the boss, but her cutting skill (OMG) is really so so bad.  I wanted to find a good hairdresser to trim my hair, but at the end, she just cut my hair but not trimming at all.  She doesn't know how to trim, with such bad bad skills. I have been trying so many hairdressers in the bay area and she's the worst one but charged a higher price than others. She just picked up one part of your hair and then cut, without any technique or style!!

I swear I will never let her touch my hair!  I feel so so regretful of paying her cut my hair though she's the owner!!

This salon also cut male hair just as well. If your looking for Kenny make sure you book with him in advance , he is a very busy man.

Alex gives great advice and gives you great suggestion on what style would look better and he goes over what he is going to trim and cut with you in detail , gives feed back on what will look good or not , he did a great job on my girl friends hair. he took 2 hours just to get her hair correct like the way she wanted.

Jennifer did my hair, since i always get my hair cut at japan town before my hair is already semi long and styled. but she did a good job on cleaning and thining my hair up.

im glad i found this local salon with great hair stylist.

This place makes me a little homesick; it's probably the closest thing to a Taipei-style hair salon you'll find in the bay area.  You can tell that Kenny pays a lot of attention to details, both in the way he works with hair and in the way he manages the salon; this is someone who takes his profession very seriously.  He didn't ask too many questions about me (which I liked), but he asked enough questions to make sure that his plans matched my expectations.

I have long, thick, voluminous Asian hair that tend to make my head look too heavy.   I walked out with a refreshingly layered cut perfect for the summer.

If I can make one suggestion: a quick neck/shoulder massage would've been nice in addition to the scalp massage  :)

I would go back here. Kenny is one of the better Asian hairstylists in the Bay Area. I wanted a change, but didn't know exactly what kind of style I wanted. I asked him to make a recommendation. He asked me generally what length I preferred, and given my hair texture and face shape, he made a recommendation. I was happy with the haircut I had.

I reserved a star because I would encourage Kenny to remain open to cutting Asian hair. The top reason why I went to his salon was because I wanted my hair cut by someone who understand Asian hair. Kenny, on the other hand, really wants to expand his client list and cut non-Asian hair. I admire his aspirations but wish he would be enthusiastic about his Asian clients as well.

After reading so many great reviews about Kenny Chao, I decided to get a cut here despite the high price of $40.  HOnestly, if Kenny had charged me his previous rate of $28, I"d be quite happy with my cut.  But when you pay more, u also expect more.  I wasn't 100% happy with my cut when i was there, I thought it didn't really look like the picture in the magazine.  It was just ok....so I still gave him pretty generous tips, as he was quite attentive.

I agree with EW, Kenny still needs to improve his skills and his cuts only look good when you're there.  After i washed my hair the next day, I realized one side of my hair was long than the other.  I was like what the heck?  And after a week or two, my hair kinda went outta shape even when I carefully blow dry it with a curled brush.

I kinda had high hopes since I saw so many great reviews about Kenny.  I actually thought that I would go back more often but, now I change my mind.  I need to look for another hairstylist, which is quite difficult in the Bay ARea.

Update:April 20, 2008

I would have given negative 10 stars to this place if i could.  Stupid of me...i came back again for a haircut and this time hoping that another hair stylist would know how cut my hair PROFESSIONALLY.  I was sooo pissed off.  I was assigned to an old lady...probably in her early 50s named "meer" or "mir"...not sure how to spell it.
i made an early appointment and when i walked in, i saw a lady in her 50s dressed like in people in their 20s...i was like, gosh, she tries too hard to look trendy...don't tell me she's gonna cut my hair.
I should have walked out!  But i was thinking, maybe she ain't that bad....

man....when she washed my hair, the water was luke warm....then it turned cold.  She left me with wet hair in the sink while she ran the tap for hot water....I waited for so long until i felt cold!  She literally walked away for a long time....I then said to her "i'm feeling a bit cold"  She then said a few sorrys and complained to me that the boss didn't fix the problem and that she was off for a few days and yet the problem hasn't been fixed.  I felt like saying "i don't need to hear your complaints"
I chose a picture from one of the magazines, but she offered to design a hair style for me.  I thought to myself "no thanks...i don't think u have any sense of style".  But i politely said "i like this hair style a lot...i'd go for this one".
When she started to cut my hair, i can tell she was so new....her hands were unstable as she cut my hair and she was wearing her bifocals while she was cutting my hair....i was like "shit...i'm so screwed"
man...i was so screwed...i had a weisel cut...never ever in my life have I ever had such a bad cut before!!!!!!  I still tipped her b/c she tried very hard, which i regret later because hair got all over my clothing.  I had to wash my clothing a few times to get rid of the hair.  I've never had that happened to me ever before!!!

She charged me $30.  For her level of expertise, I think she's not even qualified to charge $10.  I think some stylist crappy salons in chinatown can do a better job and they only charge $10...soemtimes less...

When i got home, my mom who's got no sense of style said to me, "that's a horrible cut"

I won't go back anymore....never!!!  Afterall, kenny isan't that bad huh?

Kenny Chao is great. He makes sure you are comfortable and he is so polite. He knows what he is doing and he also asks you many questions to make sure he knows what look you are going for. Everything that does he does, he explained to me why he is doing it and showed me how to style my own hair not just at the end but throughout the session. I will definitely be back. He just might be that hairdresser I have been searching for my whole life :)

At Focus Beauty, Kenny and his assistants give excellent service.  I have gotten my hair cut by him several times and have always left happy. His new salon is a little farther away for me however, provides a very modern and hip atmosphere that I like.  And, his prices are great too!  If you're looking for a good cut and great service without paying a fortune, try him out!

This is a Kenny Cho hairSalon. It's a neat, spacious and comfortable salon.  I had him as my hair stylist for over 2 years. I got refer to him from a girl friend who is crazy about him. His skill honestly is not top he just got his license in US for less than 3 years still very new. I went to him because of the price is  low $28 (sorry price just went up to $40 starting from Dec1) and he's always really helpful and hard-working I admit. he has style and taste that's a sure thing, but still has to work harder on his technique. He has those type of hair cut that will "look-good" while you're there and after you went home shampoo it the good-look is gone and after 2 weeks, total out-of-shape and I have to go to another Focus Salon in Milpitas and look for a female hairstylist Dona to fix it for me. She is more experienced, better-skill and did a great job on my hair. I've got so many compliments on it and she only charge $28, what a deal!
