Put down the computer. Yes, you. Stop reading this, and go. NOW.
Okay, on Yelp mobile then? Keep reading. This place has some kick *ss pizza. It's so good I almost don't want to talk about it here so that the secret doesn't get out.
The new Flying Squirrel is inside the old Sunset Tavern. The two now coexist together, like a marriage between the perfect mozzarella and crushed tomatoes. That's what we experienced in our first visit this week... but wait, I'm getting ahead of myself.
We walked in on a slow(ish) Tuesday night and were instantly greeted by the bartender. She seated us, and we ordered up some beers. She also told us of the happy hour here: $3 pints and $3 off all pizza. Awesome.
Companion and I shared the house salad, which was lightly dressed and topped with Beecher's cheese. It was a nice melding of flavors, and a healthy portion for two people. I'd continue describing, but seriously, let's get to the pizza.
We ordered a half-and-half. Half was the number 9: chicken sausage, goat cheese, Mama's lil' peppers, spinach, mozzarella, tomato sauce. Oh. My. Word. Between the fresh, flavorful ingredients (the chicken hinted of rosemary and olive oil), and the soft yet slightly crispy crust... it was love at first bite. We made our own pizza on the second half, but I'm tempted to tell you not to. The first half was just so perfect, don't waste your time trying to top a masterpiece. Just try what they know works well.
The pizza was a large portion for two people. It could easily be split between three. Other pizzas are graced by the city's finest: some Salumi cured meats, Zoe's bacon, Beecher's cheese.
For two people (four pints, one salad, one heavenly pie) we were out less than $40, including tax and tip during happy hour. You can bet we'll be back - bringing friends and telling neighbors.
Flying Squirrel, thanks for our trip to pizza heaven.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chelsea J.Seattle, WA673112997Sep 19, 2013
Great pizza and pitchers, pints, and a full bar at your disposal in a dive bar setting.
I much prefer the location in Maple Leaf for its neighborhood feel of being nestled away on a sleepy street but this location in The Sunset does the trick.
Not much more to say other than that. Flying Squirrel is a solid bet for pizza in Ballard.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Tanya J.Seattle, WA468334141Jul 31, 2011
This is a great, local pizza joint with good pizza and salads! The pizzas are quite large, too! I ordered an olives, mushroom and garlic pizza and it was decent. The crust is crispy which I haven't had in a while and it was a nice change.
This is not the best pizza I've had and certainly not the worst - straight down the middle good pizza!
On Saturday nights there's live music which could be fun!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Megan R.Seattle, WA54163Mar 29, 2011
I honestly cannot believe there aren't more reviews for this place. Maybe no one knows about it? If not, great - more pizza for me!
This place is ever busy, even on a Friday or Saturday night - which as any Ballard resident knows doesn't happen very often. Never had to wait for a table, and always had extremely fast and attentive service.
The house salad is a great way to start out your meal, and a small can be shared with 2 people. The radishes are a great addition! They have some great flavor combos for their pizzas on their menu, or you can build your own. The most expensive pie is about $19. Their pizza's are large enough for three people to share. I am in love with the crust. Its a thinner crust - but doesn't cut the roof of your mouth!
The number 9 is my fave - branched out and tried the number 5 last time (it was good but needed more of a sauce).
I hope no one finds this place.... :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 22, 2011
This may be one of the most under-hyped pizza places in Seattle. As a result, you won't find a ridiculous line out the door like some other trendy pizza joints in Seattle. This location is actually inside the Sunset Tavern. The tavern is kind of divey--not the nicest ambience. Another Yelper described the Flying squirrel pizza and the Sunset Tavern as a marriage of sorts. And I would have to agree--it's like a marriage between a dirty old man and a hot young babe (the pizza being the babe). Thin crust NY style pizza at a reasonable price (around $16 for a large). Generous toppings, nice tangy sauce. Short wait times for takeout and dine in. Another bonus--apparently if you dine in, there is free cover for shows at the Sunset Tavern. Only downsides are somewhat limited selection of toppings, divey ambience, and the fact that there is only one size for the pizza.

This may not be the best pizza I've ever had, but it's definitely my favorite in Seattle. As many others have noted, it's located in the Sunset Tavern and never seems to have a wait, even on a Friday or Saturday night, which is a big plus for me.
We went again last night and had a whole #5 (pulled pork, cojita cheese, and cilantro) and a half #9 (chicken sausage, mama's lil peppers, and goat cheese) and half the Corleone (a seasonal special with broccoli rabe and salami). Our half and half pizza was the bomb. My mom and I were in love with the #9 while my husband fell head over heels for the Corleone. We had ordered the #5 on a previous visit, and at the time my husband and I had both declared it the best pizza we'd ever eaten. Last night though it was definitely off. The pork was really bland and the whole thing seemed dry. We were sad that had been our whole pie choice, although I will give it at least one more try since it was so good the first time.
Service was really friendly, and I think we've had the same waitress every time we've gone. She is a bit overworked since she seems to be the only waitress and the bartender. It can be hard to flag her down, and we had empty drinks for awhile, but I don't blame her for that.
My one pet peeve with this place is that it's also a live music venue, so you might show up only wanting pizza and have to pay a cover charge. The website says they start charging covers at 9:30, which is totally reasonable, but we've been there when they've started charging the cover much earlier.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chip E.Seattle, WA015Dec 13, 2011
Yes, I KNOW that many people love FSP.
So after all the hype, I looked forward to taking a first date there, and savoring my first slice of their famed Pulled Pork pizza.
Instead, I had the most tasteless, doughy uneventful pizza dinner i've has since my college days of defrosting dinner pizzas. There was no perceptible spice, no scrumptious crust, not consistency per slice, NADA. I was bummed!
Fail.
Only reason i didn't complain to the waitstaff was that they were overwhelmed that night, and I was on a first date. You know that drill.
I'd say try it for yourself, and unlike me, DO tell them is anything is less than par.
I should have asked for my money back, and would have if not for my concern of the perceptions of the very lovely woman I was trying to have a great dinner with. Later, she asked me what I thought and I admitted that I was not pleased with the dinner. She laughed and said "no kidding, me too!". "Why didn;t you complain? I sure would have but didn;t want to rock our evening that way". We laughed in solidarity.
We have been a couple since that otherwise wonderful November night. Win!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 15, 2012
The Flying Squirrel Pizza Co serves up some great pizza at this Ballard Avenue location. A good crust is the foundation of any good pizza and Flying Squirrel has an excellent foundation. The cheese bread and salad were also good. Grab some pizza, get a beer or soda and on certain nights enjoy some live music. I wish this place was in my hometown so I could eat here more often.

Let me say, five stars for our server. She was boisterous, funny and friendly and I loved her.
The ambiance of this place is just cool. It's dimly lit with a sort of reddish glow...a very rock n'roll kind of feel. We split two pizzas and the crab dip (which was amazing). The pizzas were good but for the price ($20ish dollars), I don't think they were the best I've ever had. That pop of flavor just wasn't quite there that I'd hoped for. I did really enjoy the thin crust even though I'm usually a deep dish kind of gal.
If you're looking for some live music on the weekends too, this place has that after around 9pm. And the place is called Flying Squirrel...how can you not like that?Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
