Tucked in an offbeat area of The Gulch, this place stands out. There restuarant/lounge/bar/pool hall covers quite the square footage. This is the place to go if you have a large group of people (the bar/restuarant). There are hightops and plenty of seats at the bar (must be 20 or more). There are seriously over a dozen lounge/couch/soft chair sitting areas throughout the Saucer. A great place to get quaint or to get close. :-)
So, I had the Turkey meltdown. A ciabatta bun with warm turkey, a green (lettuce or spinach), avocado, melted white cheese and a pesto spread. SOOOO, good. The portion was in between hungry in an hour and too full to drink. This came with just bigger than shoe string fries. I had two beers on a Monday night at 6:00pm and they were $2.75 each! There were import drafts and delicious. The beer selection here will top anything I have seen in Nashville.
The decor is interesting, crowd mixed and the selection fun and delectable. Not to mention, the staff was efficient and pleasant.
Come casual or after work.
Don't forget to grab a parking validation from the waitstaff. It'll only be $3 to park in the lower lot.
See ya soon, Mondays!
The beer selection is wonderful. They get 5 stars for beer but 3 or less for the food. I continue to go there because of the beer selection but I've yet to find any of their food, except the Rocket Tots, that garners a second try. I'm about 60% through the menu and I'll get the rest of the way through it because I'm a beer lover... I still hold out hope that there is something else on the menu that is worthy of a repeat. One word of warning is that they sometimes charge a cover, mostly on weekends. Call first to see. I just have trouble paying for the privilege of buying beer. All that said, it is worth a trip and it will continue to be a regular stop on my route.
Going to Flying Saucer is like experiencing the 7 year itch. You like your husband, but there are problems. You look at other men, you think about other men and you might go try other men but you still come home to your man. So I love all the beer, I love the atmosphere, but yet I still don't feel totally satisfied. I'll come back to the Saucer, like I would with my husband but yet, hmmm...... Initially I feel at home and like I belong but just like the seven year itch my mind starts to wander. (I also have an issue with the wait staff, they don't really pay attention, which is surprising since there were like 100 of them. Oh and the girls wear mini plaid skirts, not sure why. Anyway, the smoke can be overwhelming, the pretzels and chicken fingers are good, the pool tables and dart area is pretty cool and the bar will change the TV for you.) So in conclusion, I don't really know what this review means, do with it what you want.
I call this place beer heaven. Located just across the lot from the Frist, this used to be (pre-kids) one of my absolute favorites places to go. For one thing, there really is no beer selection that can rival this and its easier to park there than downtown for the sellar.
I used to go on Sundays for the two for one. The sandwiches are great. The pickled popcorn is yummy. We hung out on the couches which are fun for groups. My advice about navigating the beer goddesses (which we nicknamed beer wenches when they weren't around) is bring a guy friend that everyone likes. You know, we all know that guy that remembers everyone's name, seems to be interested in everyone, and seems to always get free stuff. I always had one of those guys with me and we always got most excellent service. "Patrick, beckon our beer wench!"
I stopped by Flying Saucer with a local friend when I visited Nashville last month. I'm a big beer enthusiast, so was really glad to see a place with 150+ beers on draft and in bottles. We sat on the porch area, which was nice on a warm day, and explored the menu, from American pale ales, to English porters, to Belgians. The giant pretzel we had was decent, but can't comment on the rest of the food. They have a "Fire Sale" draught special for $2.50 a glass that varies each day, evidently. I had a good time here and I would visit it again next time I'm in Nashville.
This is a chain, and it's huge, so not typically something I like. I was interested in checking it out because of all the beer it boasts. The waitress was very helpful in finding the right brew, which I enjoyed.
They've got their main Bar area, which gets pretty loud, especially during trivia and live music. Then there is more of a lounge area that can be fun. They also have a private room with a pool table and dart boards, that you can reserve. All of which is pretty cool. Food, pretty decent too, I had one of the wraps and was pleased. Didn't care much for their queso though, yellow cheese and had salsa, but still blah.
The nights they valet it's a fun, the nights they don't parking down here is hell.
The first time I visited this place I was a freshly turned nineteen year old and two years too early for the visit. This is beer paradise. I will typically get that stupid whiskey for my men, beer for my horses song stuck in my head just driving by.
I'm not sure there is a bar in town that could rival its beer selection, and it's certainly a different type of bar, with leather couches to gather on and pretzels and brats to pair up with your booze. Perhaps the place is a bit German and I just don't get it. The sign upon entering says it all: "Seat your damn self." Well, there you go.
If you are looking for the best variety of beer in Nashville, you'll find nothing that competes with Flying Saucer. I can't say that I am a beer connoisseur (though I do drink a lot of it) but I will tell you that my beer pallet has been expanded solely because of Flying Saucer. If you do fancy yourself a beer connoisseur or want to become one, join their UFO Club. For $14 you'll get a t-shirt and club card that will let you keep track of all the beer that you have tried and those that you should try. Once you have boozed it up enough you might even get a free beer out of it, with the neon beer sign at the end of the tunnel being that if you drink 200 of beers (I think) you get immortalized on a plate on the wall. Tuesday night $2.50 pints are also fantastic.
Now all the things I don't like:
1) I can't stand their waitress beer goddess/school girl outfits
2) It takes a million years for the aforementioned servers to bring you a beer, and if you do flag one down, she usually has an attitude problem
3) It usually looks more like a sorority frat exchange than an open bar
4) Flying Saucer is grotesquely smoky, seriously foul.
Still though $2.50 pint night keeps bringing me back.
Alien themed bar I thought to myself upon receiving an invite to grab a beer at "The Flying Saucer." Upon the initial let-down that it was not an extraterrestrial watering hole, everything else was fantastic.
This place has more beers than you could ever try in a lifetime. In fact, they dare you to try them all, and if you succeed, you get your name on a saucer on the wall. If only I were a raging alcoholic this would be the holy grail for me.
The food was overall okay, but the french dip was especially good. Also the soft pretzels exceeded my expectations. This place has a good atmosphere and good drinks - and the fact that the bar wench's skirts barely cover their asses is a plus.
I used to be a big time beer geek. I had reviewed something like 325 beers online. Then I realized alcohol was a problem for me and I quit right away...one of those revelations people have where they say, "Holy shit!! My life's in the shitter Batman!!". It's been 2 years since. If I was still a drinker though, this would be pretty close to heaven for me. Unbelievable selection of tap and bottled beer....and the prices aren't as bad I would have expected either.
My office has rented a room out in this place a couple of times, and the side room is awesome...couches to chill out on, and a cozy room to play pool and watch TV in. What's more (pay attention to this, Wildhorse Saloon), the finger food was GREAT!
5 stars for beer selection. Amazing international selection of about a hundred on tap and another couple hundred beers in bottles. And the bar tender actually knew a lot about all the different beers there. Like a beer Sommelier. The place was not much for a scene, and the prices were like San Francisco beer prices, so 4 stars net.
For the real booze hounds, they did have mixed drinks and hard cider too. Wine selection very limited.
Best selection of beer (that I know of) in Nashville. Within stumbling distance of my hotel on Broadway (practically across the street). The Flying Saucer was the highlight of my last trip to Tennessee. A lot more classy than most bars downtown and a little pricey, but you get what you pay for! They do have a "Fire Sale" draught for $2.50 a glass that varies depending on what they're trying to get rid of at the time. If you like beer (and you should), the Flying Saucer is the place to be.
Well I used to have a glowing review on here for the Flying Saucer, but that was because I had only been there during the day or late afternoon.
I went on a Saturday night and took three of my close friends with me to enjoy the huge beer selection. This turned out to be a terrible idea. The place charged a cover charge to get into the bar, and then we had to fight for a place to sit among the dirty tables.
Once we found a spot to sit, we were blatantly ignored by two passing waitresses that were servicing tables directly on either side of us. After trying to flag them down, we finally got attention from a waitress who was servicing a different section, she did this begrudgingly.
For boasting a huge beer selection, they didn't have the first three choices of beer I tried to order.
Then the worst band in Nashville began to play, incredibly loud music, so loud that we had to move tables, which meant we had to change waitresses and sit at another filthy table, and be greeted by another angry waitress.
bottom line, the service was terrible, the music was terrible, and they didn't even have all the beers they boast to have.
Totally disappointing evening.
I didn't realize that Flying Saucer was a chain until I happened to find the one in Memphis and discovered there were more.
Flying Saucer has a great selection of beer, but the thing I like about it the most about this place is the setting. The old train station is a perfect home for this bar. It's really roomy, has huge ceilings covered with plates. There are plates from everywhere on the walls too, including one from my hometown, although I had been there a few times before I saw it.
The food is good too, and the pretzels go really well with the beer. They often have live bands but they play in the back room, so if you're in the main room, you can hardly hear them, which to me is usually a plus. They also have pool tables and dart boards. The only issue with Flying Saucer is the parking, but I think the valet is cheaper than parking the car yourself.
I don't care about anything else here...
Just get some fries with SOUR CREAM HABANERO DIP. Damn I still crave it. I tried to make it at home...let's just say often imitated, never duplicated.
The Flying Saucer's vibe doesn't really appeal to me - "beer goddesses" in short plaid skirts, TVs everywhere, and loud pop/country music. But the beer selection is unbeatable, and the green and brown beer bottle light fixtures are kind of cool-looking. The kitchen is open until midnight during the week, and they have a bigger menu than most bars (wraps, sandwiches, wings, fries, etc.)
Last time I was there, my friends and I decided the blind beer bucket (5 beers of the Saucer's choice for $10) sounded like a good idea. I wouldn't recommend it: we ended up with a few pretty good brews I'd never had before, but one of us ended up having to take one for the team and down Miller Lite the bartender had snuck in there.
The Flying Saucer could be great. It has an amazing location in an historic building (on the back end of Union Station Hotel). They have about a million beers on tap, many of which not available elsewhere. But yet, it still leaves a lot to be desired.
Service is often terrible. There is no need to be in a hurry for your order to be taken, your drinks or food to arrive, or for your check... because you'll only get upset when the server passes you for the tenth time and you get ignored yet again!
So, five stars for drink selection. Three stars for the food. And one star for service.
I finally convinced my husband to get rid of all of the random glasses he collected from Flying Saucer Beer Club while in college. Whoo!
As if it needs to be stated yet again...beer selection is off the hook. Flying Saucer receives four stars from me for their beers alone. The vibe is ok but sort of Squaresville/college-y. Parking is often an enormous hassle because of its location, but if you want to sample dozens of beers you've never even heard of before, this is the place. Just don't try them all in one night.
The food is decent, and they often have live performances, though they definitely aren't my speed (Montgomery Gentry CD release party, for instance). I actually recommend checking out the place on a weeknight so you can sample their impressive beer selection without having to deal with the boisterous and sometimes obnoxious weekend crowd.
If only Flying Saucer was smoke free, it would get four stars from me. I won't go in the winter when the garage door-style windows on the patio are closed, because then the smoke is just unbearable. But, in the summer, it's fine.
As the previous reviews state, this place has an incredible--actually overwhelming--selection of beer. I'm probably a boring person at a place like this because I always just go with a Blue Moon or something pretty common. I can't handle the choices! They do offer a full bar, but wine is limited, and 99% of the people there are drinking...BEER.
Live music on the patio several nights a week, and the room with a few pool tables is always fun. Food is pretty standard bar food, but I always go for the soft pretzels. Yum. Beer and pretzels. Great combo.
Hate the smoking, but otherwise this is a great place for a happy hour. Very accommodating to larger groups too.
One of the best beer selections in Nashville, and the food is surprisingly good too. It reminded me of my first time at Boscos when I though "wow, this beer is really good, and holy crap the food is good too." But better looking wait staff at the Flying Saucer by a long shot.
I really like their veggie wrap, and the turkey and swiss w/ avocado is really good too. What I DON'T like is the buffalo chicken wrap. I think that when something is going to be so damn hot that it is totally unenjoyable, and even ruins the taste of the beer you are drinking, that they should warn you on the menu. However, they did not warn me, and I took one bite and that was all I could stomach. But of course, the real draw here is the beer... and for the guys, the few great looking waitresses (like Alison) among the waitstaff.
Lots of beer on tap. A huge trivia night. Live music. Pool. Is there anything else you might need in a bar?
Flying Saucer is a great place to go out with a group of friends. There's a beer club you can join if you want to try to sample all of the beers. I don't quite know how it all works. You have to join, and then when you go in you can look at what beers you have and haven't had at a terminal. That's a little more than I need. They usually have a beer on special which is what I get. It's always good to try new things, right?
I like the crowd and the vibe here. Pretty relaxed which is always nice. It brings in a variety of people.
Have you tried their sour cream habanero dip? OMG, it's seriously a party in your mouth!!! My friends and I ordered extra french fries just to snack on some of the dip. it's seriously one of the best dips I've ever had. It doesn't really taste like sour cream, but a creamy dip w/ some kung-fu kick!
The bar is cool too. I've been there several times and I have yet to have a bad time. It's not a place for you to party, but a place to lounge. We were sitting in the somewhat of a outdoor place on the couches; very comfy. The decor is pretty cool. The place is decked out w/ plate all over from side to side and the ceiling. Plus they have many many many beers on tap. And they also have live music from time to time, but most of the time a dj is spinning some chillax mix!
Sill allows smoking - minus one star
Waitresses in ill fitting corset like apparel - minus one star
I was there for a company function, and as a result ordered a Cherry Lambic - next was a flat bad tasting Strongbow, but to finish it off, the Blue Moon on tap was very good.
Typical bar food, the nachos were good, but undistinguishable from any other nachos I've ever had elsewhere.
The waitresses were outfits akin to Hooters, except the flesh colored stockings are not required, but waist cinching body corsets are worn under their tight t-shirts. This gives them a strangely stiff, squished look to their mid section. Quite unnatural.
Another place I wont find myself back again any time soon. We did see a guy at the bar that strongly resembled Daniel Day-Lewis from "There Will Be Blood" so that was the highlight of the evening..
Husband and Best friend's husband both love trying all different kinds of random beers. So this tends to be our staple for a night out. I know people say that the food here is great but I have not been quite as impressed. Vegetarian choices are pizza or a flavorless veggie wrap titled "hippie hollow". So eat before you go or choose the pizza.
On one of our visits BF'S Husband was looking at the menu when the waitress came up, took it out of his hand, and put it away. I tell this story because the scantily clad waitresses here are not the brightest crayons in the box. So you may have to ask for the same thing a few times before you get it. And you may have to check your receipt and make sure that it's correct.
Flying Saucer offers the most beer on draft in Nashville. It's the place to go if you're feeling like drinking something adventurous, or if you want to flex your beer knowledge and impress your friends. Monday's are the most popular nights to go as they offer half off drafts, but they have a different drink special every night of the week (what they call their Fire Sale). The building is HUGE but can still get packed so I recommend going at off-peak hours to get the best service.
Their food is great, they specialize in fancier type bar food. Their pretzels are amazing and they offer different cheese plates to compliment whatever type of beer you're enjoying. Salad's and sandwiches are always fresh and the portions are large. The pricing is great too, its one of the few places in town you can fill up on a healthy meal and enjoy a few beers without regretting it when the bill comes. The bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable, to the point where you find yourself trying to come up with things to stump them with. The servers, however, are hit or miss. Really the only pre-requisite for being hired on as a 'beer-goddess'(what the all female serving staff is referred to as) is looking good in an ultra short school-girl-esque skirt. I've had waitresses there that were awesome and helpful in picking out a beverage and I've also had ones who serve you the wrong beer because they have no idea what they're doing.
You have to pay to park in their massive lot which kind of sucks, but if you bring your ticket in, they'll validate it for you which will bring the cost down. The Flying Saucer is located in part of the old Union Station railroad hub and the building has a lot of character. It's also immediately next door to the Frist Center, which is the biggest Art Gallery in town and I like to make the Flying Saucer part of my visits there.
They have pool tables and dart boards, but if you have your own darts you might want to bring them because it seems that their patrons like to get drunk and break them so they don't often have ones for you to use there. They typically have something going on every night of the week, so there's really not a bad time to go. Also if it seems like a place you'll come back too often (which it is for most people) ask them about becoming a beer knurd. Every time you try a new beer you scan it in their system and once you reach 200, you'll get your name engraved on a plate that's then permanently put on the wall. Look around when you go, the walls are covered with them.
Ok, Amazing Beer Selection, thats a given. Beers from all over the world. However I wasn't a big fan of the atmosphere, it felt a little like being at Buffalo Wild Wings or something similar. The food was very so-so, but that may just be cause i don't eat much meat and i was looking for something healthy. My buddies had the brats and they liked them a lot. I would have liked if the beer wenches knew something about the beers. It was also very loud. I realize this sounds like a pretty negative review, however that was just me. If you want a bustling atmosphere with TONS of beer and bar food with hot waitresses, go here.
One of Nashville's first upscale bars that launched in the 90's, this place is a beer lovers paradise (sans the non-nashvillian prices). Alternatively, every night they have a Beer of the Night thats priced reasonably.
It has cumfy couches, 2 pool tables, a ton of beers on tap and occassional live music (Thur I think is 80s night). Decent place to watch the game, as they have a big screen.
Oh...in the spring, summer, and fall they open up the front to allow the breeze in, which both minimizes smoke and just a nice relaxing touch.
Think Beer Cellar or Broadway Brewhouse....but more formal & expensive. (4.4)
Trivia night was a whole lot of fun (if you're a geek like me and my friends!) Beer selection is great, and waitresses surprisingly helpful in helping select one you'll like. Food is mediocre, eat before you go.
If I lived in Nashville, I'd go here more often. But alas, I can only go when I'm in town once or twice a year.
Comfy scene weeknights
Beer, beer, beer galore! Tasty beers, exotic beers! I was a bit disapointed by the fact that my hefeweizen was FLAT. but they were cool and took it back, hopefully sans spit came out a new one. I like the layout of this bar, it's got two separate parts and is in the old union station building so it feels kinda funky. The waitresses wear skanky short skirts, so if you're a dude, you'll probably like that. I wanted to make our waitress eat a friggin cheeseburger, double double, but that's a whole new story. Anorexic waitresses aside, this is a chill place to come for an after work drink and relax, while trying a plethora of delicous beers!
The Flying Saucer is a beer lovers dream. Hands down, they have the largest selection of beer that I have ever laid eyes on. The beer selection can not be beat, but the flying saucer theme throughout the place gets a little repetitive. They have a menu that features mostly bar style grub, but I have not sampled it. This is definitely one of the more crowded places around Nashville, as it is usually super packed on the weekends. Unfortunately, service suffers as a result, so if you are picky about stuff like that, you have been warned. Regardless of the service, the flying saucer is a really awesome place for some serious beer sampling.
If you really like beer, and schoolgirl uniforms, you probably look like every other dude that goes here. I guess if you really, really like beer, and don't like an eyeful of thigh and kneesocks, you still might go here. For the beer. They have a lot of it. Also, some cheese fries. If you don't go to Vandy or have a sparkly purse, I suggest skipping this place entirely.
Wow if I were into beer, this place might be heaven. They had such a huge slection of beer on tap. Even though I have never appreciated beer and probably never will, I did find something I enjoyed here. Apple Cider! I had a cider tasting and one of the ciders on draft was a Woodchuck Amber. Hmm hmm good. This place was cool and extremely cheap by SF standards. The only thing I didn't like is that they still allow smoking. Icks.
Sooooo ... the beer selection is awesome (that I would give 5 stars for). The first time that we went we had HORRIBLE service. I thought if our server rolled her eyes any harder they were going to pop out of her head. THEN, the last time that we went *Mother's Day* weekend we got the lovely Ashley. She gave us a whole new vision on the place. It's a great place to people watch too. You get all walks of life there. Cheers! (clink)
It's a fun, relaxed atmosphere at the Flying Saucer (Nashville, anyway. I haven't been to any others in the chain). When I used to smoke, I liked sitting in the open section at the front, they have some easy chairs and coffee tables that are really nice for unwinding during happy hour. Now, I tend to sit inside so I can avoid the temptation of nicotine.
There's a metric buttload (3% larger than a standard buttload) of beers on tap, and they're pretty good about letting you taste some if you have trouble making up your mind. You can design your own sampler from the extensive menu as well. The servers have a good degree of knowledge and can make reasonable recommendations.
There's a little description of the types of beer on the menu, which is helpful and some food/beer pairings to help you decide what to put on your palate.
Service does tend to be a little slow. Servers don't disappear so much as they are running around tending to other tables and going back and forth to the kitchen. I've never heard a complaint about the food until I read one of the other reviews here on Yelp. Every time I've eaten there (lunch or dinner), salads have been fresh, meat has been tender and delicious. A friend tried the chili in a bread bowl and was blown away. Most recently, I had a smoked salmon wrap with goat cheese and really enjoyed the interplay of tangy cheese with the sweetness of the smoke. Most of the menu is bar food--soft pretzels, bratwurst, a few hot sandwiches. They do have wraps and salads, and will let you substitute salad for chips for a small fee. The jalapeno vinegarette gives a nice burn to the lips. You can also assemble your own plate of cheeses and other munch to go with your beer, a feature I like because it adds to the fun.
Overall, I'd recommend this place for beer lovers, but get there early for happy hour, it fills up pretty quickly. If you have someone in your group that doesn't like beer, they have root beer, a couple wines and I think some liquor, but they'll look at you funny. Parking is a bit of a bitch, the lot is below the building accessed by a slightly scary few flights of stairs.
Love it love it love it. If they didn't still allow smoking - and if the patrons didn't puff away like chimneys - this would be a 5.
A jillion great beers. Supercheap specials. Trivia night on Tuesdays. "Beer Wench"es in Catholic School plaid. Insanely bad-for-ya-but-ooooh-so-tasty pretzels and sausages.
1 beer, 2 beer, 3 beer FLOOR...I drink and drink until I can't drink anymore!!! Seriously, my work colleagues and I would gather around and join the college crowd for some beer guzzling. I was a huge beer drinker back in the day (gosh, I'm getting old) and The Saucer is where I would go to sit down and drink away the fatigue from a long work week. The crowds are quite bustling and it is more of a twenty something crowd, but if you want a beer that isn't domestic (PBR or the Beast), then, I'm certain that you will find it here. Oh, plus, this is a chain and I earned my drinking wings at their sister location in Raleigh, NC.
I have spent way too much time and money in this place. The hummingbird water is a great drink! My only negative that I can give the saucer is the noise level is too high at times and you can't carry on a conversation. If you like a large selection of beer and a college/early post-college aged crowd, this is your place.
Waitresses are friendly and beautiful but service is always a bit slow because this place is so popular. Comfy seating, cool decor, many beers on tap. Order the sampler for some beer from five different continents. Good laid back trivia night on Wednesdays. Kind of a preppy college crowd some nights.
If you're looking to try every type of beer on the face of the Earth, the Flying Saucer is the place to go. You're better served to go to the bar to get your own beer instead of waiting for the waitresses, but the bar is nice and large and you can always find a place to sit. Try joining the club...I can't remember how much beer you have to drink, but once you achieve the goal, you get a $100 tab for one night and a saucer on the wall with your name on it. I'm still disappointed in myself for failing to make it into the club in college.
