14 reviews for Flying Pie Pizzeria
I was on my way back form Maple Valley, picking up Wheat/Gluten Free pizza crusts and desserts around 2pm and was HUNGRY. The original intent was to try Extreme Pizza, but I had to stop for a light in Issaquah, looked to my right and was the "Flying Pie" sign. I immediately took a right, stopped in their parking lot and got on mobile yelp. A real mixed bag of reviews, but it sounded promising.
I went in for a slice. The daytime manager was handling the counter - and she was helpful with all my questions.
All they had was pepperoni, no cheese in the warmer. I mentioned i heard (read on yelp) that the sausage was awesome and found that you could easily add toppings to the pepperoni . . . so I asked for sausage. I was set back a bit when she put on gloves and grabbed some raw bulk sausage . . . but she broke it up, put it in a pan and cooked it before she even got to my slice. After reading about wait times and looking at their sign that said their good pizza was worth waiting a long time for it all made sense.
When the sausage was done, she put it on the pepperoni, added a handful of mozzarella and spice sprinkles (secret ingredient that only a few of us quality pizza places use :D ). It went back in the oven . . . . that made it about a 10 minute wait for a slice.
I tried to pick up the pizza - no luck - the comments on the crust getting soggy were right - I had to resort to a fork for the first half of the slice. The sausage was a first bite . . . and it was great!! The manager had mentioned that the Italian Sausage was made by the owner - you won't find it anywhere else.
The prices did seem high at first glance, and they are a tiny bit higher than I would charge,
The slice was huge, and had all the things I look for . . . . excellent and just right amount of sauce, plenty of high quality pepperoni and sausage, right amount of cheese . . . I try not to give 5 stars to pizza places, but this has all the things going for it that my favorite place does and I gave it 5 stars.
The pizza is a bit on the spendy side - but not horrible based on what you get. When in Issaquah and looking for pizza, this is the place.
Summary:
fast service, inexpensive beer, terrible crust, poor toppings and the high price of pizza earn this a
WILL NOT EAT HERE AGAIN rating.
One star is a seriously bad rating and I don't like to hand these out indiscriminantly, but this place deserves the lowest rating for the low quality of food.
Dad and I dropped in for dinner and tried it due to their great location. At first we were set back by the prices ($33.00 for a XL pizza, $6.00 per slice, etc) but we rationalized it because sometimes price does equate to quality.
Not so in this case.
We arrived ar 6:45PM and approached the counter to order. The food server took our order and my father wanted a quick slice of pepperoni to tide us over before the meal. We were told that they didn't have any, and wouldn't have. Dad protested as he really wanted Pepperoni and I shrugged, not much one can do, right?
We ordered 2 veggie and a chicken slice with two beers. Total price was just under $26 before tip, beer was only $2.50 per Corona. The kind server asked if I wanted tomatoes and I thought that was great follow through to offer it. She took our name to call us. Instead of calling us they brought the meal to our table. Nice touch!
I was fairly stoked at the size, until we started to eat. The crust was crispy on the bottom but doughy in the center WITH NO FLAVOR.
(NOTE: WHY OH WHY DIDN'T I READ YELP FIRST? Susan H fully detailed these problems over a month ago,,,darn)
Don't these guys use yeast in their crust? yet I could not detect any flavor. In fact the downfall of the crust is that it was bland and completely lacking in taste and texture. To its credit, there was lots of cheese on the Veggie pizza but all I could see were olives topped with those fresh tomatoes on top. No onions, no mushrooms, no bell peppers, no artichoke hearts on this Veggie pizza. Plain and simple - nothing special.
Dad complained about his garlic chicken pizza and the rubbery meat (Darn, if I had read the YELP reviews beforehand I would have been warned).
As we got ready to leave we overheard the family next to us say they had spent $72 on two pizzas - Yikes!
And the kicker insult?
As we departed we bussed our own tables and here was the food sevrer seating eating his meal - A SLICE OF PEPPERONI PIZZA just as was denied when my father tried to order it.
Flying pie used to be our absolute favorite pizza, but I feel they have gone down hill lately. The last few times the crust (especially around the edges) is 2" thick and bready unlike the way it used to be crisp and perfectly proportioned.
Beware: If you order something with "chicken" they now use some God awful processed product that looks and tastes like a salty grey sponge. YUK!!
Still decent pizza, although totally overpriced and inclined to be greasy.
Flying Pie is pretty good pizza. The ingredients taste fresh and the crust is really good! Only bad thing is that it can be kind of greasy, but I think you get grease with any pizza. The price is pretty high, the biggest pizza being about $36 or so, but you do get a lot for your money in that one pizza.
I couldn't not find this place. It's tucked away in the corner besides some martial arts place and is a very small storefront. I drove past it twice.
It's tiny inside and was filled with families, small children everywhere, and included some video games in the corner.
Pizza took a long time coming but was huge and too big for the two of us. Lots of toppings and we were only able to wade through about half of it. Pretty good and people cycled in and out as we were munching through our tire sized pizza.
There was a little girl at the next table that kept staring at us. I guess she aint' never seen a couple of piggies shoveling all sorts of things in their face before. We thought about putting her in our pocket and taking her home with us, but she wouldn't fit.
Not bad. Not great. Pricey.
I think the pizza here is really good and the ingredients are really high quality. You have a whole spectrum of crusts from really thick to super thin (like a banned Italian model). The crusts are all hand thrown which makes it fun for smaller kids to watch too.
Like the other reviewer wrote, it is a little loud, but I discovered this place when having our end of the season party for my youth soccer team. And we've been back several times.
On top of really good pizza (the sausage is really good), they have temporary tattoos to take home with you!
I called one Friday night and they told me that it was an hour wait for take out. We were hungry, so we didn't wait.
To sum it all up, this pizza is so good and stuffed with great ingredients, that I can't eat more than 3 slices of pizza here without feeling ill. Thats how good it is.
Flying Pie is definitely a family and sports oriented place. Like others have said, it can get kind of rowdy.
I love their sausage so much, my first instinct is to refer to this place as my favorite pizza in the Seattle area. Unfortunately, I remembered that their crust is always overwhelmed by weight of their ingredients. I love that they pile so much on, but I would love it more if they would remember that not only does it make the pizza impossible to pick up but some of those ingredients also make the crust inedibly soggy.
However, there is a solution. The calzone. They make a dynamite calzone. It's cheap, and it's gigantic. For $7-8, I can get 3 meals out of this thing. They also are a bit lighter handed with the ingredients here, so it keeps crispy upon reheating if you do so in the oven like any other sane person.
Oh, and yes, the wait times are ALWAYS nuts. It has never been less than 40 minutes for me. They're not always that busy, so they may just be the slowest pizza makers ever.
It should also be mentioned that two members of my family, Chicago natives, adore this place. Whenever they're in Seattle, it is always a stop that must be made.
As all have said here, the sausage is fantastic. Spicy and delicious and they ain't stingy with it for sure! Honestly, my favorite pizza is just plain old Pizza Margherita (with a little extra fresh mozzarella and basil)which, oddly enough is hard to find in pizza places and is absent from the menu at Flying Pie as well. The hubby is your typical meat and potatoes guy and the original thick crust with extra cheese, fresh garlic, and sausage is one of the few meals we can agree upon!
Again, as all have said here, at times the toppings are so generous, you'll have to eat it with a knife and fork AND the crust does indeed suffer for it. Crust sogginess won't be an issue if you're an obligate carnivore. The problem starts if you enjoy toppings like pineapple or mushrooms, which release tons of juices when cooked.
Some may like the option of the calzone (or Zappi, as Flying Pie calls it), but where's the ricotta???? It seems like there aren't ANY pizza places in Washington that put ricotta in their calzone. If it doesn't have ricotta, its just a pizza folded in half!
As for the restaurant, I wouldn't eat in there if they gave me a free years supply of sausage. LOUD beyond compare and almost a little too rowdy for kids!
All things considered, a great choice if you're looking for a solid pizza with fresh toppings AND you're hungry as hell (you sure won't leave that way!).
The atmosphere is old school pizzeria. A small but effective salad bar, pebble ice for the soft drinks, but best of all table top ms. pac-man and donkey kong! The pizza is great. Garlic infused sauce, nice ingredients (no weird things like kibble/pellet shaped sausage bits).
This place will make you long for those summer days hanging with your friends, pockets stuffed with quarters, and bellies filled with pizza and root beer.
I would somewhat recommend this place if you have kids. It's kinda noisy and kid-friendly. The parking is decent. They have a lot of old-school coin-op video games, which is fun. If you don't have kids I'd probably head elsewhere. Not sure where else in Issaquah, though the Pizza Place in North Bend is outstanding and worth the drive. Ah NB PP's Chicago Stuffed Pie... but I digress.
The pizza is very average here. They are reasonably generous with all the toppings, but the crust is mediocre (the outside too crunchy and underneath too doughy and flat) and it brings down the whole pizza. The salad bar is also average at best. We had the pleasure of cleaning our own table before we ate, too.
We came in for dinner and it took us 5 minutes to figure out it wasn't table service. So we got up to order, which was fine, but after another 5 minute wait in line, we were told our pizza would take 40 minutes to prepare. Not sure if it was an anomaly, but it didn't seem like it was, so be prepared to wait on the weekend if you come here.
They don't have Dr. Pepper or equivalent. Tsk tsk.
Def old school pizzeria feel to it. The pizza was pretty good, all of the things I like about a pizza they got right. I just had a slice of cheese tho so its hard to judge completely. You can always tell when school is out in small towns. There was a ton of little skater brats hanging out here throwing their crusts at each other. I got a slice, drink, breadstick and salad bar all for $8 so I cant complain about the price. But my buddy got two slices and a drink for $12. Seemed like their beers are average pricing. I'd go back to them before I hit up Extreme Pizza, that place sucked a lot. All in all, minus it being a singles mixer for teens, it was pretty alright.
Come here for lunch, their pizza by the slice is fan-fricking-tastic! Huge slices of cheesy, meaty, greasy goodness.
so this is hard. i have to say, for a ground beef or sausage pizza, they're awesome. like a ton of meat! however, there are some drawbacks: the first is that the pies COST $35+!!!! Holy Shi-! That is pretty high, especially as the place is a TOTAL dive. it is even dirty. The salad bar looks like it was imported from a school cafeteria. and the staff can be moronic and lame. I do like the beers they have on tap, Mac&Jacks, but they're $5. it is just highway robbery. good pizza, but way too $$$$.
