I expected this to be just like all those trendy shops with toys for people who never grew up (yet keep the toy in the package on a shelf after they buy it).
I was pleasantly surprised. The buyer here definitely has a good eye. A number of things I haven't seen 36357743 times before. I anticipate returning for some holiday shopping. And perhaps some birthdays.
Very cute and quirky and with way more stuff than you'd think at first glance. There's a wide range of every changing items - many things you didn't know you needed, but just have to have - at a variety of prices. Even though it's a little small, I can easily spend an hour in this store, discovering different items around every turn. Seriously, I wish the owner would offer lessons on displaying housewares - I'm sure she could actually turn my cluttered ikea expedit shelf into the kitchy-cool reflection of my personality that I dreamed it could be so long ago.
When searching for a unique gift for a hard to shop for (or hard to impress) friend, Fly Bird has become my default first location - and very rarely have I left empty handed. It's fun to be the person whose gifts people look forward to getting - especially since Fly Bird makes finding said gifts stress free and financially possible.
I'll preface this review by confessing my magnetic attraction for this kind of shop. It doesn't matter what city I'm in, I always find a kitschy gift shop.
Fly Bird was totally fly. The shop had a little bit of everything I enjoy: fun home decor items, hilarious gift cards, sarcastic t-shirts and handmade jewelry. We picked up a couple father's day cards. These are the kind of cards our dads will appreciate. And we spent a good portion of time cracking up over the "Ants have sex in your beer" t-shirt. I'm still giggling.
If you're my kind of gift giver, you'll love this place too. Fly Bird is a one-stop shop for fun, stylish things that are both clever and practical.
Very quirky! I never leave this store without @ least one thing!
Revised: Were it not for the prices, this place would get 4 stars for selection and 5 stars for design and cuteness. So I am going to revise to 4 stars because this place is charming and there is little in there that I would not buy if I had a lot of disposable income.
I am torn. I want to give this place more than 3 stars, but the price of everything. Oh the prices! On the one hand, the selection is excellent. I love the things they carry and would be happy giving most of the stuff in the shops as gifts. They do have items at different price points and it is possible to find cheaper gifts in there, but on the other hand, it just seems expensive. I have purchased gifts there in the past and will continue to do so because I love their selection and love supporting small businesses, but it does hurt the wallet a little bit.
Great medium sized gift shop with fun, unique and cool items. A little of everything -- baby items, boy things, bags, bath & body, fun stuff, housewares, time, lighting, paper goods, etc. Julia is a very cool and fun person.
They also have an online catalogue. "Curious items for the happy home, body and mind"
Fly Bird is highlighted in the current (03.07) Chicago Magazine as one of the best boutiques in the suburbs in the article Boutiques We Love.
If buying for yourself, a place to blow discretionary funds. If buying a gift, a wonderful choice to shop for something unusual.
I have three reasons for liking this place. First, I don't know of any other store with such a comprehensive stock of dia de los muertos curios - very handy. Jesus ashtrays too. Second, the handbags are expensive and awesome. Lastly and most importantly, every woman should own a stylish, naughty apron. Seriously...this store carries 50s style aprons that will beckon a good spanking for the wearer.
You heard me.
Finally a gift shop for my generation!
Seriously, this is one of my favorite places to shop/browse in Oak Park. Everything in stock is handpicked by the owner, and she has amazing taste. The staff is incredibly friendly, and the layout of the store is always fresh with constantly updated displays and space. Long live FlyBird.
Do you consider your sense of humor off the beaten path? Quirky? Are you tired of chain stores that sell the same stuff you see everywhere else? This is a store for you. Now, it's small, and has some one of a kind stuff that is limited, so be aware this is a niche place. I found my.self incredibly entertained. I loved the stuffed ugly dolls, the bike chain bottle openers.... but my favorites were the "stuff on my cat" note pad and the "Jesus hates it when you smoke" ashtray. The owner is a laid back gal who, you can tell, puts her heart and soul into this place. If you're in the area, stop by fo sho
This is one of my favorite stores of all time, which explains why my boyfriend and I usually stop by at least once a week. They have the most quirky and unique stuff I have ever seen in one place! Another great thing about this shop is that in many small family owned businesses like this, when you go in them, you feel this immense pressure to buy something (or at least I do). At Flybird, they are more than happy to be friendly and helpful, even if you are just window shopping. This shop has the nicest, most genuine and friendly staff....who know about all of their products/goods...they are a great neighborhood shop with such fun jewelry, home decor, keychains, bags, etc. It's a must, especially if you are just visiting Oak Park!!!
This place helps me infuse a bit of humor to my sometimes too grown up house. Alessi pieces help ground this place as a legit home decor shop, but the gun flower vase I picked up at the sidewalk sale proves that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I go here to buy jewelry for my sisters that I would totally wear if I were a a girl/transvestite. Also dig the pseudo religious stuff, the lamps, and the whole attitude surrounding this super awesome store. Helps makes Oak Park almost cool.
Unique gifts for unique people !Great selection of handmade paper products, gag gifts, fun t-shirts and stuffed toys for big kids! Some very different baby items and body care items. They have Ugly Dolls aplenty-perfect for my niece!! Nice staff and very helpful!
Fly Bird is a really neat store. If you are looking for a cute little gift or one of a kind item you can find it here. I think everyone should go in there at least once.
Pricy, and beware the chocolate. It's often fuzzy and moldy
i love this store. great for unique gifts, and the service is very accommodating. i once wanted an item in white (which they had run out of). she took down my number and called me 2 days later when the shipment of white harrys had come in. so nice!
and yesterday, they were giving out free gold teeth!
Lookin for a cool, styley, slightly pricey little somethin for somebody? This would be a good place to check out.
Perfect place for gifts. Very friendly staff and the displays are eye-catching. A lot of effort and attention to detail go into this place and it shows. Very fun to browse.
hot dogs with eye patches, ugly dolls, berwyn t-shirts, and other goofy items. Friendly. yay.
Fly bird is a very fun, cute, and unique store. They have cute knick knacks and cool stuff to decorate your apartment or house with. When I have a hard time finding the perfect gift I come here, because there is always something here that will fit the personality of anyone.
Looking for a unique gift? You'll definitely find it at Fly Bird. The store is host to a mulditude of popculture inspired items. From their unique cookware that resembles monsters and animals to the plush UGLY Dolls, the overwhelming theme is fun. I especially like the bibs and other baby products that say stuff like, "I can't read", and advise you not to give a chicken leg to a baby. Funny!
Finally, a gift shop in Oak Park for people under 50! Fly Bird is pretty cool, with handpicked items that range from quirky novelty items to chic design. And there's a whole gaggle of Ugly Dolls for hipster friends from adults to kids.
Fly Bird is one of those stores I drove or walked by for years. Each time I'd think, "Man, I really need to get there - it looks great!" I finally did, and it was: unique gifts, lots of Japanese fun and odd stuff, and creative and designy home goods. Jewelry, too.
Don't let the size of the shop fool you either - there's stuff packed in nooks and crannies here, and lots of it. I picked up a number of stocking stuffers all at totally reasonable prices. I hadn't seen any of the stuff at Fly Bird anywhere else, except perhaps Giant Robot out in SF.
And although I don't have a kid, the baby and kid stuff was fantastic.
I'll keep Fly Bird on my short list of shops for great gifts, and you should too!
Liked it - saw some cool things from some of my favorite designers. Picked up a topless mermaid bottle opener as a birthday gift for my brother. I'm sure he will love it. Staff was friendly and helpful. You'll get some good laughs if nothing else - loved the Jesus hates it when you smoke ash tray.
There aren't that many unique, yet stylish gift stores in Oak Park so I was thrilled when Fly-bird opened. I go there every time I need a quick gift for someone and practically always succeed in finding something. The gals who work there are beyond friendly! Overall its one of my favorite stores in all of the Chicagoland area.
