Review Highlights
this is for you nic b.
i really like how they super load those babies up with lots of toppings. and i really like how close they are to my apartment and how late they stay open. especially on randomly long days when you get home at 10:00 only to realize at 10:20 that you NEED frozen yogurt immediately. and their ONE flavor is good if you like that 'sourish' yogurt trend. at first i felt like i was cheating on my (former) beloved, 16 handles, but i actually am super into the fruitilicious yogurt of flurt right now so whateves. 16 handles is so like last year's prada.
***ps. the best deal is a medium with three toppings for 5.75 (ends up being 5.95 and yes i know it exactly) because a small with two toppings ends up being 5.25.
It was just another morbidly hot evening in NYC, when the stickiness hangs onto the air with an iron grip. My partner in crime that night, Jim, and I strolled leisurely around Union Sq playing "catch up" on our summers. When suddenly he turned to me and announced "You know what I'd like?"
"What's that?"
"Some frozen yogurt"
I glanced at my cell phone, for the first time in a few hrs, it was already inching towards midnight, and I suddenly felt a soft hunger pain.
"Sounds divine, but what's even open?"
"I know a spot"
It wasn't long before we waltzed into "Flurt". It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but the whole store is so bright that its still a little hard to miss. Its overall design is modern chic, with an undeniable Asian persuasion not unlike other Frozen Yogurt joints.
We sauntered over to the counter where there was a lovely girl who immediately greeted us with a welcoming smile.
They only offer one flavor (original), which is totally fine by me, since its an even better way to canvas the flavors of the delicious toppings they offer.
i debated for a moment between getting a small and medium trying to gauge the size of the hole in my stomach before I caved and ordered a medium size with three toppings (a deal for about $5 something each). I had the Raspberry, Blackberry, and Mochi (at the servers suggestion).
The Berries were plump and delicious, they were incredibly fresh, which I thought was awesome considering they were only a short way from closing.
The Mochi was only slightly sweet and delicious in its stickiness, boy the employees are mostly right in wondrous ways!
The actual frozen yogurt, has a freshness you can really taste, as compared to say red mango.
My only regret is not asking the server her name so I could announce her awesomeness!
This place definitely trumps other frozen yogurt chains, and I'll be returning, even when humidity turns into chappy winds!
The sweltering temperatures have finally arrived in New York. Friends are texting to say the city feels like Bangladesh and the detestable dripping from air conditioners is happening with regular frequency.
Horrific humidity calls for one thing only: frozen yogurt!
A few reasons I dig Flurt:
Plain is the only flavor on offer (what else do you need?)
Fresh peaches
Soft mochi
While Flurt's no bargain ($10.51 for two smalls with two toppings each) it provides temporary relief from the heat and that is definitely worth the price!
I live my life by the very wise words of one of today's most respected, most dignified, most creative artists: R. Kelly.
R once waxed poetic:
"Soon as I see her walk up in the club, I'm a flirt.
Winkin' eyes when I roll up on them dubs, I'm a flirt.
. . .
Yeah yeah homie, you say she your girlfriend,
But when I step up to her, I'ma be like Tarzan.
. . .
Now the moral of the story is cuff yo' chick,
Cause hey . . . I'm a flirt."
Oh, R. But I must agree. When it comes to Flurt, CUFF ME. If I'm even near Flurt, something happens to me. I become focused on one thing: a medium cup of frozen yogurt with three delicious toppings. I become so focused that I turn into Tarzan, swinging from skyscraper to skyscraper. Spiderman has nothing on me when I'm hungry.
There are three serving sizes: small, medium, and large. Not to get all Goldilocks on you, but the small is just too small, and the large might actually freeze my brain (because, hello, as if I'm SHARING), so the medium is juuust right.
Also, I love toppings. Each one costs $0.95, but if you order a medium or large, you can have three toppings at a discount. It's a much better deal than getting a small with more than two toppings.
Like most people have said, the fruit is REAL good. I probably have the wrong approach to my diet, but I decided that I'd get my daily serving of fruit via the fro-yo. I prefer blueberries, strawberries, and peaches. But shoot, it all looks good.
Flurt is great to-go or to savor there if you can find a seat. Definitely try for the window if you can; it makes for great people watching. We watched a dog totally get distracted by Flurt and face-plant into a wall while his owner laughed at him. It was both funny and sad. Which sounds a lot like my life in a nutshell.
Hands down, the best tart frozen yogurt of the bunch. Forget Red Mango, they don't even serve oreos as a topping option. Forget Pinkberry, they have a horrible aftertaste and you *know* I'm right about that. Flurt is where it's at.
I was supposed to go out with the girls this past Saturday night. I got dressed up for the occasion. My sister (if she's reading this) knows this means I traded my college t-shirt and winter Uggs* for cute high heels and a dress. I may have even curled my hair.
The problem? I practically fell asleep in said clothes before making it out.
So I decided to change into my sweats, a ponytail, eye cream, and my glasses (or as I call it: sexy) and call it a night. Just as I was about to curl up into my bed, my roommates tempted me with the only thing that could get me out of that fantastic and delirious state of mind: frozen yogurt.
"16 Handles? Please? Let's go! Let's take a cab." I begged.
"We are Flurt girls," they responded, almost in unison.
I was a little hesitant because 16 Handles is my favorite place in the world currently. I even talk about it at bars when there's a conversation lull, that's how much I love 16 Handles. But I'm in this happy and great place right now in life where I'm open to trying almost anything** new. And since Flurt is extremely close to the new apartment, Flurt it was.
So we walk in and it's super minimal. Nothing on the walls. At all. Only one flavor: original. And they take debit cards. The girls explain the process to me: you order a medium and you get three toppings. Simple. We decide to go half healthy and half junk food - strawberries, oreos, and chocolate chips.
Can I just tell you how generous they are with their toppings? You know how when you're eating ice cream or frozen yogurt and you get to the middle/bottom and there are no more toppings left? All the fun was at the top and now you feel a little sad because it's gone? Toppings in every bite at Flurt. They PILE ON the toppings. And the best part was actually the fruit. I think it's because this froyo does, in fact, taste a bit more yogurty than ice creamy and therefore it goes better with fruit. Next time I might even forgo the junk and stick to the fruit.
I think they even have wheatgrass shots here but I really don't understand that. I don't really believe in the benefits of wheatgrass. I'm a wheatgrass skeptic.
But Flurt frozen yogurt has made me a believer and totally made my Saturday night bonding over healthy dessert. This is going to be my dinner with fruit during the summer, I can already tell...
*Don't judge.
** But I won't do THAT.
MmmmMmmm - I'm a frozen yogurt girl at heart, and the surge of places offering variations on tart froyo throughout the city has kept me satisfied, emotionally stable, and doing daily pilates to make sure my indulgences don't create their own swirl in my body. Its taken awhile for me to visit Flurt since I'm not usually in that neighborhood, but after dropping off some film at Duggal on a really hot day I decided that the cards had aligned in my favor and headed over to this cute, inconspicuous shop.
The place is pretty typical for most of the froyo places around - clean, modern lines with minimal decoration, a bright space that offers some indoor seating that was very necessary during the midday heat. There's only one flavor, plain tart, but if you're a frequent customer of these froyo establishments that's probably what you're after anyway. The toppings are also pretty typical, ranging from the variety of fresh fruit to mochi, cereal, cookies, nuts, granola, chocolate chips - you'll get comparable offerings at every other place around Manhattan.
The serving size of the froyo was quite generous (I got the medium with 3 toppings choice), and they certainly loaded the cup to the brim with my strawberries, mochi, and Oreos. The froyo itself was refreshingly tangy, with a bit of the citrus aftertaste others have mentioned - not as creamy as other places, but still very tasty and satisfying. Its too bad its located in such an out of the way location for me!
I think I have come to like this place better than pinkberry or red mango.
The prices sure beat them! And the yougurt is SO SO good.
I went there on a Sunday night and was suprised of how many people were sitting inside with their various sizes of ice cream with toppings that seemed to spill over the limits of the cup.
The only problem with this place was the man who waited on me and my friend. As we were coming in I saw he was about to leave fro behind the counter and made a face as he had to stay. Then after I watched more people come behind us and he just seemed really unhappy to be there..
Finally after the people left and I saw him walk out to have a ciggarette ...
The froyo hype has pooped out places like pinkberry and red mango that taste like expensive crap with a lot of additives. flurt is pure in the sense that it has milk, sugar and cultures..period. It doesn't have that weird grainy after taste. i always love to flurt.
I had never really eaten much frozen yogurt before. When all my girl friends talk about Red Mango and Pinkberry, I'm like "uh huh, uh huh" :)
But, I came to Flurt once with my girlfriend and she was very excited to go. The place is small, but very clean, cool, and simple inside with enough seating so you can sit if you want. It took me a little while to like the plain frozen yogurt. But then when I ate it with the fruit toppings together, I loved it! Plus, it's very healthy. I wish I could remember the nutritional information but I think one of the other reviewers wrote about that. The fruit is all very fresh and very good quality.
How can you go wrong with a healthy, sweet, tart, cold, awesome dessert? Mmm... you can't!
Yet another Pinkberry challenger fails to best the apple of my eye. Flurt is about as good as the second tier gets, though - the highest of the nobles under the king, if you will. The yogurt is refreshing and tangy, something that most plain tart flavors at analogous chains can't seem to accomplish. Here's the thing, though - the fruit toppings were disappointing. I was happy to see chopped peach on offer, but it was underripe, as was the strawberry. To play with the big guns, Flurt needs to put a little more effort into obtaining quality fruit. Also, a name that isn't a portmanteau of "fart" and "blurt" might not hurt.
lighter, not as sour yogurt, what's up w/ the irregular shape?
Went here and got a small with strawberry and chocolate chip topping after being so stuffed w/ beef from BLT Prime. It was pretty good, the strawberries were really fresh and sweet, which goes well with the lighter flavor yogurt. The chocolate chips are harder, so it won't melt in your mouth, but gives your mouth something to work on . The only thing is, either they like to give you a lot, or they like to make shape their yogurt in a phallic shape.... Eh, is that why they call it Flurt? I guess they are somewhat related, but still. I'm eating here. I don't need to think of that when I'm eating.
The real deal. Real, fresh, tart, zingy yogurt. No aftertaste, no blah powederyness like Red Mango and most other chains, no fakey stuff. Huge piles of toppings! If you like the taste of corn syrup in your drinks, stay away from here. You won't like it. This is real, fresh, delicious. If they had a more central location, there'd be a line out the door. Love it.
WAY better than PinkBerry!!! Doesn't taste like sour crap. Fruit tastes a lot fresher. Completely addicting. Could be more consistent with topping options and should get green tea yogurt. Otherwise, excellent after-dinner/after-bar treat. Highly recommended.
Following Nic B.'s lead I stopped by today despite the rain, and cold, and sleet.. :) Absolutely nothing will stop me from making my appointed rounds. However, instead of getting a yogurt w/fruit, I ordered a smoothie, the "Berried Treasure" so cleverly named. It has tons of different fruits in it, plus some juice and some of their yogurt, all tossed into a blender. I requested they add mango (which wasn't on the list of berries for this shake).. and they added it (no extra charge). The shake was $5.15, in only a small to medium-ish cup. However the shake was delightful and healthy. If you examine the chart the yogurt has no fat whatsoever, and just 5 grams of sugar which ain't bad if you ask Martha Graham. :) Plus of course
fruit has it's own natural sugar, still it's good for you.
I will come back and try the yogurt in a dish with several berries. :)
By the way check this out.. almost two years ago this New York guru knew her stuff and posted this frozen yogurt list.
http://www.yelp.com/li...
Huge kudo's to Grace S., and of course to Nic B. for her recent review.
P.S. A girl came in behind me to order, but said nothing. She was a regular, and without a word.. the guy behind the counter was already making her order, he knew what she wanted. Funny ay? Fro Yo mixologists like bartenders that know what their regulars will order in advance? :)
Best of the trendy yogurt spots based purely on quality of ingredients. The price isn't terrible, but could be a bit better, and flavors make up for though... the fresh fruits toppings are fresh (not canned and covered in crap), the yogurt itself is the perfect amount of tanginess with a really nice smooth and firm texture... they have other toppings but I can't stray away whatever fruit is in season at that time with some granola... wow!
I wasn't out looking for Fro-yo, yo. I ducked in during Saturday nights torrential downpour and thought..well why not give the Yo a go. It was obvious that the brooding server absolutely detests his job. I imagine the combination of blinding bright lights, rude stressed out soccer moms, and bovine wanna-be SATC post college students; who like Elaine from Seinfeld convince themselves that Fro-yo is the new "diet treat", would make even the most chipper chap cantankerous..
FYI..Fro-yo is not low in calories! Sans fat does not mean it isn't loaded with sugar, which does what? That's right sweet cheeks..it turns to fat on your ass. Flurts frozen yogurt and toppings were way too sweet for my palate. I am convinced these yo yo places soak the fruit toppings in syrup before showcasing the sugary delights out in the open, where they are then susceptible to bacteria and filthy scavengers.
The price was right $3.00 for a small that was generous enough to share. The fruit and crunchy fruity pebble toppings are 1.00 extra. The additional fro-yo lard on your inner thighs...priceless.
Would someone please tell me where I can get some ice cream up in here. Fro-yo...would ya just go!
Addendum : read this telling article about the suspect ingredients found in Froyo. http://www.nytimes.com...
Pinkberry style yogurt means it's not the saccharine crap you find at, I dunno, Tasti D-Lite? It is sweetened but not to death, just enough to make it a good base for the toppings, which is what it's all about anyway.
Pinkberry, why so stingy with your toppings? Flurt knows how to pile 'em on, and it's cheaper. More toppings = tastes better = Flurt wins. Hey, that's easy math, no?
Flurt has the sweetest mango and freshest fruit out of all the frozen yogurt shops in the land.
Flurt is the best frozen yogurt shop on the market; there's just enough sweetness, a hint of tartness, and the guys that work there are really generous. I always have to ask for extra blackberries at Red Mango, but at Flurt, they seriously pile it on the already huge heap of frozen yogurt that I worry about finishing a medium, which is NEVER a problem with me.
Their yogurt doesn't melt too fast so I don't feel like I'm in a rush to eat it (because I hate eating melted yogurt). It's smooth, creamy, and slightly tart.
Try the watermelon, mango, and mochi combination. It is AMAZING.
In an already saturated fro-yo market, flurt doesn't bring anything new for the ppl. The only reason we stopped here was that it was on the same side of the road that we were walking on (and we'd have to cross 3rd ave to go to red mango - is that laziness?)
Anyways, the yoghurt was tasty - although icy as others have mentioned but i don't mind that. The toppings were generous.
All in all, i wouldn't cross the road to go to Flurt... but if it's on my way and I need a fro-yo i'd stop by again.
Recommended for: Fro-yo!
Food 5, Service 4, Ambiance 4.
Flurt you devil you *winks*... you had me at... mochi! Yes fro-yo fans, Flurt is where you get the fro, the yo, and then some. Unlike other places that are majorly hyped up, Flurt is not just a tease, but puts out and delivers a one-two punch.
I finally came to flurt with my two korean sisters, J and J, and had an amazing experience. The three of us shared a large with mochi. The yogurt was perfect in texture and taste. The mochi was chewy, soft and enhanced the whole experience. Some people have mochi frozen, others slightly sugary/powdery, but Flurt, they have it just right!
There are no crazy lines, and service here is polite, attentive and not anal about how much toppings they give you. Flurt has a minimalistic interior with amble seating, and fun tables and chairs that makes you want to laugh, eat and have a great time - and that is what dessert is all about!
Sean Approved: Absolutely Definitely YES!!!
Best tangy frozen yogurt in the city. It tastes like Chinese yogurt drinks, with a great stiff mouthfeel with smaller ice crystals than Pinkberry. Also they are generous with toppings unlike Red Mango and Berrywild.
The first time I ate here, I intended on carrying it home but I finished long before I got home.
I still don't know why we need to eat the same fro-yo under different brand names but if I had to differentiate
flurt fro-yo is more icier than redmango/pinkberry.
and for some reason i got the impression that this place was less clean than other stores.. messier counter?
i pref the red mango on 14th.
Very convenient Pinkberry style frozen yogurt without the lines and hype of Pinkberry. The prices are pretty similar but Flurt is way more generous with the toppings and their mochi is great (not too hard/dry and not too powdery). This is my go-to place for frozen yogurt now because there are rarely lines and there's generally always a place to sit. It's decorated minimalistically in the new frozen yogurt style with cute red plastic chairs and clean interior.
The one difference I find in taste from Pinkberry is that their frozen yogurt is a bit more grainy in texture. You can sort of taste miniscule ice crystals in your yogurt, which is something I like. Pinkberry's overly smooth yogurt sort of reminds me of that artificial diet crap they have in supermarkets. Flurt's yogurt tastes a bit more natural, without all the chemical additives that make it unnervingly smooth. As with this style of yogurt, it's not too sour and not too sweet, but it probably is an acquired taste for those not used to tangy fro-yo and it might take some getting used to.
I'll be back here when I crave frozen yogurt :)

only, replace the temperature of #5 with 80 degrees F.
Sorely disappointed!
I recently had Flurt again and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious their yogurt is. These days, it's so hard to remember whose yogurt tastes like what. I'd say Flurt is a close second to Red Mango.
Flurt's texture is what I appreciate most. While it's not as creamy and soft as Red Mango's, its firmness allows it to stay frozen longer and prevents it from melting and becoming runny. The taste is also superb. It's not as tangy as Oko or Pinkberry, but has just enough tang to be sure it's authentic frozen yogurt.
Fro-yo girl here, checking out the NYC fro-yo scene. Flurt is adorable - both the look of the shop (bright, white walls, and transparent red chairs), the logo, and the name. It's down the street from Baruch so it attracts the college crowd. I could see Blair and Serena stopping in for a fro-yo fix.
They have just one flavor of fro-yo: plain tart. The number of topping choices seemed average: fresh fruit, mochi, coconut, cereal, TJ's cookies. Smoothies and wheatgrass juice are also available.
I had a small plain tart fro-yo with mochi balls and whole raspberries ($2.95 for the fro-yo, 95 cents a topping, no discount for extra toppings). The thin, tall swirl was rather elegant and amounts to a bit more than one usually gets. The berries were nice but the mochi balls were a little hard, indicating that they weren't that fresh. The fro-yo was a bit sweeter and on the icy side, with a pleasant citrusy aftertaste.
Credit cards accepted.
You know you love me. X0 X0 fro-yo girl.
Love the greek yogurt taste with the fresh fruit toppings, nice modern, clean decor and it's never overly crowded. helps that its two blocks away from work!
It took me MANY years to get into tart fro-yo. This is definitely one of the better places. For a medium sized cup, you have the choice of three toppings and they give you a good amount of each one. It's very yummy. I'm VERY particular about the mango that i get in my yogourt--cant be too mushy or too hard. It was just right here. Plus, pleasant employees.
OK- I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE YOGURT CRAZE!
but, i guess I'm part of it!
I was walking to my friend's apt when I found Flurt.
Looks like Pinkberry, Red Mango...same tangy yogurt with same toppings. Decor is also similar with the minimal designer-y feel. This location is small. Yogurt is sweeter than pinkberry and a bit creamier.
NO LINES and the Korean guy at the counter (I think he may be the owner) is CUTE! (maybe even HOT) :)
Although there is only one flavor, I find this a nice alternative to Pinkberry, Red Mango and all the other yogurt joints popping up in the city these days. I enjoyed the sour flavor, I like their topping choices and their prices are a bit better than the other places.
Dear Flurt,
I hate to date you behind Pinkberry's back but.. you're so much less icy and that much smoother, softer and creamier.. also, your portions are so much more.. how shall I put it. Voluptuous. And your accessories? Just plentiful and well matching. You are wicked fresh.
You know what I like about you? The fact that you don't flaunt your name and attract lines that are too long. Sitting with you on a Monday evening, I kept count of the number of suitors who came in to admire your unsurpassable deliciousness over the 15 short minutes.. and it averaged at 1 person walking in per minute. Amazing.
Always remember, big is beautiful.
Love always,
Fatkid
OK, so at first I didn't like it. But after a few bites I couldn't stop! It is awesome and much better than Pinkberry. I recommend adding pomegranate seeds. Delish!
Can't wait to go back.
Yum! This reminds me vividly of yogurt flavoured gelato in Italy, but with a soft serve texture and minus the fat. It's delightfully tangy, almost lemony, and while it's not the smoothest, fluffiest soft serve I've ever had, the texture is perfectly acceptable.
But it's that divine, true yogurt flavour and the variety of incredibly fresh and delicious toppings - chopped fruit (mmm pomegranate), granola, cereals, coconut, nuts, chocolate - that make this froyo so delicious. Plus, at $3 for a very generously sized 'small', it's a much better deal than many of the other frozen desserts places.
YUMMMMM!! How can I NOT give this place a 5-star rating?
I'm tempted to go back to my reviews on Pinkberry and Yolato and deduct a star from each, because the frozen yogurt at Flurt undoubtedly wins the ongoing fro-yo dessert competition. The yogurt is made "just right". Smooth, sweet, yogurty...and yes, fat-free.
It's $5.50 for a medium cup with 3 toppings, just like the others. However, the satisfaction factor is MUCH greater here.
I cannot wait to see more Flurts open up throughout the city. In the meantime, I'll just have to commute to this store...
I think I may like Flurt over Pinkberry. It definitely less tart, and more yogurty flavor than the ones at Pinkberry (I do like Pinkberry too). If you don't like the tartness of Pinkberry's yogurts, then I would try Flurt. Only thing, is I wish they had more flavors....but there's always time to expand I suppose =D
Plus when I went, it was nice and quiet and a nice place to just relax and read or talk with friends.
I am happy to report that my #1 fave 'frogurt in the city' has been replaced by Flurt, which is basically a creamier, a tiny bit less tart, and more tastier version of pinkberry's plain. Besides taste, some other key factors for my rank are as follows:
Pros:
1) ||Toppings||. Better mochi / korean ricecake (dduk) topping than pinkberry's, More fruit choices, and I think I saw Oreo... yum...
2) ||Wait time/lines||. Surprised they haven't blown out their marketing yet. The store was completely empty when I went]
3) ||Slightly cheaper prices||. The medium combo with 3 toppings is cheaper than if you get a small with 3 toppings.
In case you're curious-- my fave frogurt in the city rankings thus far are below, and you can check out their reviews under my favorite 'Lists'.
1) Flurt
2) Cafe Lalo
3) Pinkberry
4) Yolato
5) Yogurt flavor @40 Carrots- Bloomies)
6) Crazy Bananas
It was a ridiculously hot and humid Sunday night in Gramercy: windows were fogged up and down irving place, models dropping like flies outside the gramercy park hotel, whispered conversations of "inconvenient truths" - a looming environmental apocoplyse engulfing the scene - then, as if out of nowhere, in the middle of 22nd and 23rd streets, on 3rd avenue - FLURT appeared.
At first, we didn't know what to make of it, "is this real?" she said to me. I don't know, this the first I've seen of it, but there are people inside, lots of people, I said. "It looks like they're serving frozen yogart, no calorie yogart with fresh fruit toppings - strawberries, blackberries, oh my god- that looks like blueberries - kuv I love you" Ok, maybe she didn't go that far, but still - Flurt is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Fresh toppings, fresh yogart, open late. Expect Gramercy prices but dude, on a summer night, Flurt you're Priceless.
Tasted like Pinkberry but a little less creamy and a bit more sour. It's too yogurty for me. I like Pinkberry better because it's more like ice cream. They only got one flavor here but lots of toppings.
I love you for a million reasons, Flurt.
Mere minutes from my apartment.
No obscene lines or oddly tart aftertaste that makes me loath Pinkberry.
Great topping options (I love the granola!)
No overly-whipped, airy, chemical taste that makes me despise Tasti-D.
The only thing that makes me cringe?
Your prices... a bit over the top, but I guess it comes with the territory.
Feh.
The yogurt has a REALLY sour taste to it. A taste that can't even be covered up with chocolate chips, coconut, and bananas. Now that's sour.
It's nice and cold, which I guess is a requirement for frozen yogurt, but it gets an extra star for cooling me off on a hot (October!) day.
Another note for all the young, single Don Juans out there, the place is a CHICK MAGNET.
