I've seen a good deal of pizzerias that tout their pies as New York-style. I've seen an equal share that brag that their pizzas are "authentic," which is usually meant to convey the same thing. Everyone strives for that authentic New York style because there is an unspoken consensus (unless you're from Chicago, or to a lesser extent, St. Louis) that New York has the best pizza around. Some claim that it's not possible to reproduce this pizza anywhere because of the water or a slew of other magical reasons, but pragmatically, it's not replicated as well outside of the east coast because those folks who are good at it didn't want to move west to share it with other parts of the nation. Ipso facto, California has some pretty crappy pizza.

However, San Antonio is lucky to have some Jersey transplants who decided to share their talent with us. Florio's pizza is the most authentic NY-style pizza that I have had in the city, bar none.  The smells, the tastes, and the atmosphere is as true to form as you're going to find in the Alamo City, and it's a pleasure to know that I can get their pizzas with only a short drive to Dijon Heights. I feel it's pointless to go into descriptions about the pizza itself - if you've had it, you know what it tastes like, and if you haven't had it, you need to try it.

Florio's Pizza

Best NY Pizza in San Antonio!! This is a hole in the wall pizza joint that has great service, sandwiches and pizzas!! As soon as you walk in the array of NY memorabilia is the first thing that attracts your attention!! It gives the place a great authentic feel.

The staff no doubt from the upper east coast!! And despite what people always hate about east coasters, they were super friendly. There were even some characters in the back hanging out that no doubt could have been extras in the Sopranos!!

The pizza was no doubt heavenly!! It's the best slice in San Antonio!!

I'm glad I tried this place.
Yes, the pizza is tasty... especially the crust! I probably would've gotten into the pizza more if we didn't have the sausage on it... I'm not too crazy about the sausage on my pizza sometimes.
And woah, woah, woah... the italian hero I ordered was crazy good. I've never had oil and vinegar on a sandwich before Florio's, and I can't believe I had done without for so long. I seriously dream about this sandwich.  Is it bad that I like it more than the pizza??
The staff is great! I enjoyed the lady behind the counter who made conversation with every customer who came through the door, which I find to be cool. You could tell that there were mostly regulars coming in and out, which speaks volumes about how good this place is. I'm fairly certain I will become a regular myself.

The pizza is excellent!! Definitely a little slice of NY in San Antonio. If you have lived in NY or have friends that are New Yorkers you will completely get the staff if not you may take their mannerisms and comments the wrong way. Do not let that stop you from trying this pizza it is definitely worth it. The pizza will keep you coming back and the staff will eventually grow on you.

"Are ya here for witness protection?"
"...Paramus"
"...everyone here family? ...just happened to be here?"

Holee Hell! Take me to Nu Yawk/Jersey and back and put me in a maternity dress! I rather be mistaken for being preggers than labeled as an over-eater. Even their sausages are from Jersey! The staff is from Jersey!

The pizza is on point. It beats a majority of pizzas from the pizzerias back east. Why? Their crust_ is perf-FEC-tion_. Not hard, not chewy, and no oil splotches turning my paper plate the color of Tang. I tossed the hot pepper flakes and garlic powder in there, pushed a little dent at the midpoint of the crust to fold, and went to town! nomnomnom. Another slice, please.

P.S. Their flag they have set up in the dining area is awesome.

Authentic New York style pizza joint, run by authentic New Yorkers.  That means they don't take kindly to indecision or substitutions, and they close whenever they feel like it.  But when they're open, go there.

Great pizza (whole or by the slice) and amazing Italian sub.  They have lunch specials, and they deliver.  And the owners are actually pretty nice, despite the tough New York exterior:)

Picked up a pie from Florio's tonight. I've gotten slices and sandwiches from there several times for lunch, but I can't remember ever having gotten a whole pie from there before (probably because they're closed on Sunday and Monday nights: a.k.a. the biggest pizza nights of the week--a huge mistake, IMHO). Since slices are effectively twice-cooked, a whole pizza is going to be quite a bit different, so I figured it was time to give it a try.

Anyway, I like pizza a lot, and Florio's (for the most part) didn't disappoint me. I did a 1/2 and 1/2 with sausage and jalapenos. The sausage was great: thinly sliced Italian sausage link. It's sliced lengthwise, which is different but good. No complaints about the jalapenos.

The crust, cheese, and sauce are solid. The crust is a real highlight, because it's got a nice crispness to it, and here's the important part: it contains no noticeable sugar (which is blasphemy in my book).

Here are the two problems I have with Florio's: first, there is a lot of black pepper sprinkled on top of the pizza, and that's not terribly bad, it's just freaking weird. The pizza tastes like black pepper, and I mean in a big way. I love black pepper--who doesn't? But what on earth is it doing all over my pizza? But here's the real problem with Florio's: they use freaking CANNED MUSHROOMS. This is unforgivable, and it loses them a star. There is absolutely no call for using canned mushrooms. Ever. They can order fresh, pre-sliced buttons or creminis from their distributor just as easily as they can order canned. And fresh mushrooms would cost less than any of the meats they're putting on the pies, so cost can't be the issue. It would actually take less prep than canned mushrooms (just pull em out of the bag, rather than open the can and drain them first). So why on earth would they not use fresh mushrooms?? I just can't figure it out. Maybe if all you Yelpers will tell them what a tragedy canned mushrooms are, they might change their sinful ways? Might as well try . . .

I want to go out on a high note though, so I'll say that I love the family atmosphere. I love that they aren't terribly outgoing--place your order, pay, and move along. "Keep it movin' people!" More power to 'em!

I've been eating at Florio's for over 7 years.  I love the food and I love the people who work there.  Florio's is run by a family who are originally from New Jersey, and it shows.  They're always incredibly nice to me when I walk in and they know me by name.  If you love thin crust pizza (New York style) then this is the place for you.  The toppings are delicious.  Pat, the one who runs the register, makes her own cakes and they are amazing.  Around Christmas, she makes a candy cane cake that I'm in love with.  It's a great family experience, which you won't doubt when you show up around 7 on Friday or Saturday night-it's always packed.

Oh. My. God. Best pizza! I have only gotten pizza to go from here, so I can't speak for the inside of the restaurant. What I can say, though, is super delicious pizza. I can seriously eat until I'm absolutely stuffed. Then eat some more. The crust is so good. Okay, I'll admit I don't know what authentic New York pizza's supposed to taste like, BUT, I do know what tastes good. Definitely different from your run of the mill Pizza Hut or Domino's. Definitely much better. I must highly recommend.

This is by far and away, the best Pizza shop in San Antonio. I'm from NJ and have tasted some really good places (3 guys from Italy, Vinny's and of course Helens Pizza). S when I began to taste some Pizza places around here, they weren't disappointing, but nothing like home. Until of course I came here. This place is AWESOME!! The dough is soft and sweet and they don't over or under do it with the sauce and cheese. They also fly in their sausage toppings which is an added plus.  Now don't come here if you're expecting something the likes of Pizza Hut or Dominos, you'll be disapointed.  This place is far better and they make pizza the way it's supposed to be made, not oily, and a crust with a little substance, not loafy like some places do.

There's plenty of seating in here and lots of signs and symbols from back East. Highly recommended if you're in the mood for some good pizza. For added flavor, I would suggested getting your pizza topped with the sausage and adding some red pepper flakes. You will not be disappointed.  Very authentic east Coast flavor.

The best pizza I ever had. But I just stay in San Antonio. I'll eat two large whole pizzas if I don't control myself.

Best pizza in San Antonio, hands down.

I have read a lot of reviews complaining about the service. I don't get it. I have never had a bad experience there. All you have to do is order your pizza and pay. How difficult is that? The counter lady( i forget her name) is a little rough around the edges but you get used to it.

Try a large meatball, onion, jalapeno. Yum.

If you arent in the mood for pizza, then why are you here? Just kidding. Try the cold italian sub. The bread and the dressing are amazing.

And if there is cheesecake in the cold case, you better grab one.

This is the best pie I've had in Houston or San Antonio. Authentic NY pizza. As said before the hours are weird and it can be a little annoying mostly b/c there is nothing more frustrating then craving something then upon arrival finding out you can't have it. But this is great stuff.

My friends like the NYC style pizza by the slice. They always put a lot of pepperoni on, definately not skimmpy. I don't have pizza  there's something else that always draws my attention!
The Italian Cold Cut Sub is the best in town. Great Bread, always fresh tasting. No Mayo and they gladly hold the tomatoes
Bonus points for IBC Root Beer and they look like they have a nice fat chocolate cake for dessert but I never have room!

They have limited hours, are closed mondays and the host's abrupt manner might be a little off-putting for Texans at times but somehow it makes grabbing a slice on a steamy Alamo City afternoon almost seem like Brooklyn... maybe

This is the best pizza in San Antonio.  Sure, Main Street is good and Voltaire has some fancy pies, but Florio's is flat-out the best.  They've got an authentic NYC taste and the crust has a bit of rigidity but is still chewy.  It's a bit greasy, but that's how pizza should be.  By the slice, or a whole pie, it's cheap and all the tables have the full set-up of garlic powder, chili-flakes, S&P, and cheap parmesan.  Good selection of beer (also cheap), and tons of NYC / NJ crap on the walls - you know you've found your pizza joint.  Be forewarned though - their hours suck.  They're closed on random-ass days and usually are there in the afternoon but don't take orders and just sit around and read the paper.

For the back story, look at my review of Big Lou's...
If you're a native, then you might interpret the attitude behind the counter as a direct result of dealing with over-indulged AHHS kid and their over-indulged parents.  If you're not a native, then you may interpret the attitude behind the counter as typical Jersey love.  Me?  I think it's a combination of the two....
None of this is important unless, of course, you don't hang '09 on your sleeve or you're not accustomed to Jersey attitude.
If you can get past the f*ck-you veneer, you're in for a pleasant surprise.  The pizza is New York-perfect: pre-cook cheese pies, wait for customers to order cheese + ingredient slices, warm the slices with desired ingredients in the oven, and serve.
Florio's pies are spot-on.  They have a perfect pizza bone, a perfectly thin structure, and a sauce that complements but doesn't detract.
Lunch is a bargain.  Two slices and a drink for a flat $4.50, no tax, no tip.  And, like any self-respecting Jersey pizza walk-up, the hoagies are phenomenal.  Don't miss this '09 jewel.

Authentic New York pizza. Thin crust, greasy, so good. The location is weird to me, being in Lincoln Heights, but whatever, it's still good. A great place to stuff yourself silly.
