The New York Style Pizza, or as I call it "pizza", from Florio's certainly hits the spot. The best choice from this locale is the cheese pie. The owners are from Palisades, New Jersey and have a bit of the 'tude that is reminiscent of home for me, and the pizza to keep me coming back.
The slices are cheesy, gooey, and just the right amount of greasy. There is a good-enough amount of seating (even though walking in, it doesn't look like there's any!)
For a moment eating at Florio's aptly located on Broadway, I swear I forgot I was in Texas, and thought I was back home in New York City, and for that, I thank them. Nostalgia sucks, but rules.

The best pizza I know of.  It's very good but can fluctuate a little.  When it's off, it's good.  When it's on, it's absolutely awesome!

One of my favorite combos is fresh pineapple from HEB on top of a meatball- pepperoni pie.  Oh Yeah!!!

In my mind, Florio's makes the best thin crust New York-style cheese pie in San Antonio, bar none (whatever that means).  I have tried some of Florio's other pies like sausage and pepperoni, but prefer the simple, straightforward bite of their cheese pie.  Florio's crust has a nice crunch and sweetness to it.  You can ask them to make it a little crunchier if you would like.  I like a little char on mine.  The ratio of cheese to sauce is just perfect.

I have sampled a few other things including Florio's meatball and cold cut sub, which were very good.  Their dinner salad is nice, but you only get one choice of dressing: italian.  They serve it in a styrofoam bowl and give you plasticware, which actually affects the enjoyment of the salad.  (I know, that sounds a little snobish, but it's true.)  Their cold cut salad is huge.  The price should clue you into that, but I didn't catch on.  Don't plan on eating much pizza if you get this item.  In the end, I would recommend a cheese pie with a crunchy crust.

PS - there are some other quirky things about eating at Florio's but I'll let you figure them out.

This is really great pizza! Get the Sicilian! It's a bit more expensive, but very delicious! My husband and I split one and it's enough for both of us. Also, they have a very good lunch special. I believe it's 2 slices and a drink for $4.40!

One of my 2 favorite places to eat pizza in San Antonio. I lived in NYC as a child and frequently visit my old neighborhood in the Bronx and I gotta say this is the closest thing to the real deal, especially it being in Texas. The crust, the cheese, the sauce all take me back to Arthur Ave. and Belmont in Little Italy BXNY.

Undoubtedly one of the top 3 pizzas in San Antonio. Certainly the best pizza not certified as authentic Neapolitan. Thin, perfect, crust, a simple, subtle sauce, the right amount of cheese, and something else I cant quite put my finger on.

In my opinion, Florio's is the best pizza in San Antonio.  I've now managed to try all the major places in town and can definitely say that I most prefer Florio's.  This is the North East style pizza I am familiar with.  It's just a little thicker and the crust a little breadier than what I grew up eating but almost identical in every other aspect.  I love the sausage they use.  I swear, some of the places in town use freaking Jimmy Dean so it's nice to get a genuine Italian sausage on a pizza . .even if it is cut microscopically thin.  Oh - and the cold italian sub is great.  Flavor-wise, one of the best I've eaten anywhere.

    MMMMM... pizzaaaaaa...

If you're looking for New York-style pizza, served up with a good side of east coast attitude, you've found it at Florio's. Delicious thin crust pies topped with tasty tomato sauce, cheese and toppings of your liking. I'm a cheese pizza kinda girl, so that's really most of what I have tried here, but the ooey gooey slices covered with melty cheese leave me wanting nothing more.

And don't mistake the east coast attitude for bad service. They're super friendly, site and tell jokes, and get your pizza to you piping hot in record time. It's a perfect place to pick up and take home but you can always try for a seat in their small cafe!

After all these years, I don't mind sitting firm on my 3 stars after my recent visit to Florios.

I've decided that I'm a thick crust Chicago pizza with fresh crunchie vegitables and lots of sauce kinda girl.

I don't want to hate on NYC since I've never been there, but I'd hope their pizza isnt soggy and void of sauce (ahem Florio's pizza).

Its just not my slice of pizza even if it does take up my entire plate.

The employees are great; patient with customers and accomadating as can be. There's plenty of seating. I love the front room and swivel chairs, which makes waiting pretty exciting during dinner rush. The resturant has an expanded back room I'm sure you could reserve for big parties. I even enjoyed the sports memoribilia decorating the place.

Aside from the chewy veggies and soggy pie, I don't like to dine in restaurants with dust caked on everything. It creeps me out. The beer bottles in the front room looked faded and caked with dust from years of isolation. Kudos to the childrens changing table in the womens rest room, but it was covered in dust too! Some of the chairs looked new while others looked like they had pizza sauce thrown on it.

For being in Alamo Heights I'd imagine they'd have decent cutlery too. You'll be eating your salad in styrofoam bowls and your pizza on paper plates but luckily you won't break your plastic fork or knife on the soggy dough.

Try Florio's if you must. As you will read, you'll either love it, hate it or just not be a fan.

I have a strong inate bias against any pizza not originating in a deep dish and with the cheese on the bottom.  So, the question begs: Could I like pizza in the style of the pretender, New York?  The answer was a definate yes.

Came here for lunch as its in the neighborhood.  The crust was thin, but not disgustingly greasy as they were generous with the cheese and toppings (I had peppers and onions and olives).  The slices were definately supersized as well.  The service was very friendly as this had the feel of a family run joint.

The prejudice for Chicago style puts it at a solid 4 stars.  However, the quality product guarantees I'll be back.

Hands down, my favorite pizza in the neighborhood!
This place is awesome. They serve up thin crust pizzas, with generous toppings and delicious sauce.
I think that the NY attitude that they give is a nice touch.
The restaurant is clean, and decorated with all kinds of NYC kinda stuff. So don't go there and root against the Yankees, or show up in a Red Sox jersey.
    The pizzas are huge!

Florio's continues to amaze. The 'f**k you' Jersey attitude is gone. I kind of miss it, but I don't miss it at all.
This small pizzeria still serves one of the top 5 pies in SA (the other 4, in no particular order, are Dough, Rome's, Sorrento and Station Cafe). The crust is perfect. Daily lunch deal is under five bucks. Don't forget the sandwiches. The cold Italian is outstanding. The meat and cheese are wrapped up together, surrounded by lettuce and onions and a vinaigrette. A perfect sandwich. If you want a hot sandwich, try the eggplant parmigiana.  Just like it sounds, melanzane parmigiana on a hoagie roll. FABULOUS. Side salad prices are such that you should avoid. $3.95 for a side salad is way ridiculous, but people buy 'em. I bought one. Once. I was cured by the price/value ratio. Enjoy the pie. Enjoy the hot and cold sandwiches.  Be grateful that San Antonio has this level of east coast Italian walk-up eats.

(DISCLAIMER: I was born and spent my early youth in New York City).

Hankering for pizza while spending the night in San Antonio, Florio's was closest per Yelp .

I scanned the other Yelp reviews quickly, but my wife and I made our way there despite the worries about the staff's attitude.

The staff was uber-friendly and laughed when I said I found them via Yelp. They said they didn't understand the comments that they were rude and unfriendly. The woman at the register laughed out loud with a "Yeah, I'm the mean one!" We grinned as her brother served us our drinks.

We took a glass of wine and a beer and found our way to a seat. The obligatory NYC memoriabilia was present. The table was clean and our pizza (Florio's special) showed up within 15 minutes.

Tasty, crisp, thin crust and fresh veggies made it. The only complaint is that the wine glass was small, but they need to make a profit right?

The place was clean and reminiscent of "the old country." It's a pizza joint; not a restaurant. If you want that whole white linen tablecloth and bow-tied waiters, this is not the place.

Reasonable price, quick service...Florio's will have a repeat customer next time I'm back in town and want pizza!"

You know what's good about this place?  If you're craving a pizza, you will get a pizza that be both delicious AND satisfy your pizza cravings (I'm looking at you, Dough).

The whole place is very New York, right down to the slightly obnoxious New Yorkers' hedging of bets with Mets/Yankees and Giants/Jets posters right next to each other all over the walls.  But beyond that, they serve a pretty great pizza.  Everyone out front seems to be a 40-something year old New Yorker, from the cashier to the bus boy to the woman taking to-go orders over the phone, complete with accents and shortness of conversation.  They do have San Antonio service though, as everyone is exceptionally nice and they'll have no problem making sure you get everything from drinks to extra Parmesan for your table.

The pizzas, while unspectacular in their design, are flawlessly formulaic, from the extra gooey cheese melt to the delicious assortment of meats, veggies, and mushrooms.  The sausage and meatball are both perfectly seasoned and the exact right balance of chewy and juicy.

If you're feeling too adventurous, there's no 42' monsters, BBQ chicken, nor prosciutto and spinach here, but it's definitely not a bad place if you're looking for some comfort pizza.

Best New York pizza place in San Antonio!!! When you walk in it is lilke walking into a place in NYC!! Family run business since 1989. They are as authentic as it gets and just good people  with a touch of the soup nazis for those who don't know how to order.  They also have won best sub sandwich in San Antonio for numerous years. The eggplant sandwich made this person appreciate eggplant for the first time. One friend who order the sandwich saved half for later and texted me to tell me "It is even great cold"

We FINALLY got around to eating at Florio's...since we drove by it almost every single day and kept saying "we need to eat there!"  So, on an unexpected day off from work, we stopped there to have lunch.  Luckily we arrived right before they closed for dinner (3 pm) and ordered a large, well-done cheese pie.  It was really good...thin, crispy crust and some of that NY taste that I've been searching for.  Not perfect, but good enough to make me want to go back for another slice!

The atmosphere completely won me over.  As a life-long Yankees fan, I was in NY heaven when we walked in there...the walls are covered with Yankees.Mets/Giants memorabilia...yay!  I had to take a picture to send to a friend who's a Red Sox fan...just to show him that even in San Antonio, the Yankees are king!!

We'll definitely be back for more pizza!!

Reasonable priced, delicious pizza. I loved that sliced meatball is a topping! I came here on a Saturday night with my family and had no trouble getting a table. I'm not going to say that this is the best pizza in town but its quite tasty. We ordered a small pepperoni and mushroom pizza and a large pizza with pepperoni, sliced meatball, and sausage. I loved them both.

The crust is good but I think Big Lou's makes a better crust. I like the cheese and sauce. My only criticism is that the pizza was a bit too greasy. The restaurant is decorated in New York sports memorbilia and had a big tv in the corner of the room so you can watch your game. The sandwiches looked good so I'll be paying Florio's another visit soon.

I used to love Goomba's Pizzeria and it was my go to place to get a NYC slice until I fell in love with Florio's! The slice was as close to NYC as you can get! I ordered the pepperoni and meatball toppings and they were the shizznitt! The crust was damn near perfect. It had the crispiness that other places lack.

I have never seen so many italian people in one spot so I knew this joint had to be authentic. I look forward to trying their specialty pizzas and subs.

If you crave authentic NYC style pizza this place is a must!! Anyone who disses this place should be slapped with a nasty slice of Dominos pizza.

I'm from NYC - my favorite pizza places still used coal ovens - which no longer are legal unless 'grandfathered.'

Florio's with respect to SA is just about as good as it gets.

I started going there in 1997 - but don't go much due to where we live.

But, I noticed - since 410 is totally complete - the trip is a breeze!

If you want a nice - thin - crispy crust - with no weird "after taste" - and a light layer of cheese and good tomato flavor - this is your destination!

If you don't like flat fountain drinks - a staple in SA - they do sell bottled drinks also.

I'm eating a cold slice as I type - very good!  Pizza is a 5 - my rating of 4 is based on a rather lackluster meatball sub.

We also ordered a meatball sub - not that good - the meatball doesn't have much flavor - to be honest.

Will try the sausage/pepper sub next time.

For those who think the service is rude?  Being from NYC - it's nearly impossible to insult me - but those from the southland?  I can understand - since my wife is from KY - and she doesn't care for them.

My visit last nite was very cordial - so - perhaps - they're reading your mail?

Last - and most importantly - the prices are more than fair!!!!!

A medium pie is 16" with no extra toppings and under 12 bucks!!!

Give it a try - just head south (inside the loop) from 410 - turn right on Nottingham - it's in the back of the strip center on Broadway.

I can't believe how amazingly meh Florio's is.  In fact, my pizza experience tonight was the most disappointing I've had in town.  It sounds like sacrilege to say, but I would have rather had a pizza from... oh god, I can't believe I'm saying this... Papa John's than from here.

I ordered a vegetarian pizza (onions, olives, red peppers, and mushroom).  The pizza sure smelled good as I was driving it home.  I hadn't eaten all day, was hung over, and was ravenously hungry and extremely pissy.  In fact, I'm not sure if everyone was stupid in traffic or if I was in just that bad of mood.  The smell of that pizza in my trunk got me through and probably prevented quite a scene when some jerk cut me off in downtown.

I opened the box and was initially very disappointed in even the way the pizza looked.  The toppings were plentiful but very small.  The pizza lacked visual definition.  Anyway, I got past this and put the first slice in my mouth.

    Meh.

This was not one pie I wanted to make American-Pie Style love to. The amount of toppings coupled with the small size of them made a funny texture in my mouth.  The crust was dry and had a cardboard texture it, but got better when I got to the end -- the actual pizza crust ring was very good.  I wondered if the pizza had cooled off too much, so I microwaved one slice and put another in the oven.  Both pieces exhibited the same texture and feel.  If I wasn't so dern hungry, I probably would have stopped eating it...I can assure you that I won't be saving the leftovers.

I'm sorry, Miss Ellie's, for cheating on you.  I'll be back next week.

Tonight, a friend insisted we head over to this place once she had heard that I was a Florio's Virgin. And my happily full belly is quite thankful! I walked through the doors and immediately took in a deep breath of delicious pizza smell. We went around 8:15 on a Tuesday night and didn't have any issues with service or waiting a long time to get our slices.  We sat at the bar and chatted it up with Patricia while we waited. (She also has a fab cake business - Patty Cakes. But I digress...).

When our slices came out, they had a perfect sauce to cheese ratio and a slightly crisp crust held it all together! They didn't skimp on the olives on my friend's slice either...it was covered!

We weren't planning on dessert, but after talking with Patricia about her Red Velvet Cake, we were sold!!!  She told us a couple special tweaks she makes to her recipe, but I won't divulge those secrets here, you'll have to try it for yourself!  The cream cheese frosting is just oozing with sweetness and the slight hint of cheesey flavor. HEAVEN!
She also makes cheesecakes that I hear are legendary but you have to catch them when you can - I hear they go fast!

I will definitely be back to try more...I have my eye on the white pizza with ricotta!!

Went based on decent Yelp reviews (and wanted to try someplace new).  Not the best pizza in town (so far, that award goes to Dough PIzzaria on Blanco), but not the worst I've had.

We got the medium Florio's special, it was cooked & deliver to our table fairly quickly, mayhaps too quickly, I would have preferred the center area to have been cooked more thoroughly (was real flimsy).  The dough/crust was pretty tasty, the toppings & cheese were "aight".

I would eat here again if I was very close by, I was rushed for time, and they weren't too busy (but I'd buy by the slice). Not the best pizza I've had, but definitely far from the worst.

My advice would be to try it for yourself and be your own judge, my tatstes are different and I'm very particular about pizza.

    Good :
    + tasty crust
    + relatively inexpensive/person

    Bad :
    - hard to find the first time, its behind some buildings off the main road (Broadway)
    - busy on weekend nights

Authentic New York style pizza joint, run by authentic New Yorkers.  That means they don't take kindly to indecision or substitutions, and they close whenever they feel like it.  But when they're open, go there.

Great pizza (whole or by the slice) and amazing Italian sub.  They have lunch specials, and they deliver.  And the owners are actually pretty nice, despite the tough New York exterior:)

The pizza is on point. It beats a majority of pizzas from the pizzerias back east. Why? Their crust_ is perf-FEC-tion_. Not hard, not chewy, and no oil splotches turning my paper plate the color of Tang. I tossed the hot pepper flakes and garlic powder in there, pushed a little dent at the midpoint of the crust to fold, and went to town! nomnomnom. Another slice, please.

How do I love Florio's? Let me count the ways! First of all, this a family run joint (sadly, Mr. Florio passed away recently and it is hard to go there and not see his smiling face). This is NY style pizza! My advice to you, do NOT ask for tomatoes on  your pizza! Try to avoid the mad rush that is the kids from Alamo Heights H.S. that come here for pizza between the hours of 12-1! Their lunch special includes 2 slices and a drink! I love to go with someone and split the lunch special and the COLD ITALIAN!! Heaven!

I didn't think I was a huge fan of NY style pizza...until now. I loved Florio's. While I didn't get the same fantastic service as a lot of other reviewers, I'm  hoping that was because it was a busy Friday night.

We entered the pizzeria to find a somewhat long but quick moving line. A lot of the people were picking up to go orders, and quite a few seemed to be repeat customers. I placed my order while the bf found a table. The staff was pleasant enough, if a little annoyed that I wasn't familiar with the ordering process. Such is authentic NY style, right?

The pizza came out in about 10 minutes, a beautiful sight of large, thin crust slices with bubbling cheese and glistening pepperoni. While a bit greasy for my taste, the sauce to cheese ratio was perfect, and the crust divine.

I would definitely return, especially since we spent $18 for two (including tip) and will get two meals out of it. Too bad I don't live closer.

I've seen a good deal of pizzerias that tout their pies as New York-style. I've seen an equal share that brag that their pizzas are "authentic," which is usually meant to convey the same thing. Everyone strives for that authentic New York style because there is an unspoken consensus (unless you're from Chicago, or to a lesser extent, St. Louis) that New York has the best pizza around. Some claim that it's not possible to reproduce this pizza anywhere because of the water or a slew of other magical reasons, but pragmatically, it's not replicated as well outside of the east coast because those folks who are good at it didn't want to move west to share it with other parts of the nation. Ipso facto, California has some pretty crappy pizza.

However, San Antonio is lucky to have some Jersey transplants who decided to share their talent with us. Florio's pizza is the most authentic NY-style pizza that I have had in the city, bar none.  The smells, the tastes, and the atmosphere is as true to form as you're going to find in the Alamo City, and it's a pleasure to know that I can get their pizzas with only a short drive to Dijon Heights. I feel it's pointless to go into descriptions about the pizza itself - if you've had it, you know what it tastes like, and if you haven't had it, you need to try it.

In a city that doesn't know jack diddly squat about pizza, this is the BEST pizza in San Antonio by way of New York/New Jersey.  Not Alamo, Goomba's, Big Lou's, Central Park, Cerroni's, Main St., Grimaldi's or 46th St. Pizza can touch Florio's.  I regret not coming here more often.  The lady at the register seems intimidating but is a sweetheart deep down inside.  Pizza is the way it's supposed to be, piping hot with a thin and crispy crust.

This is by far and away, the best Pizza shop in San Antonio. I'm from NJ and have tasted some really good places (3 guys from Italy, Vinny's and of course Helens Pizza). S when I began to taste some Pizza places around here, they weren't disappointing, but nothing like home. Until of course I came here. This place is AWESOME!! The dough is soft and sweet and they don't over or under do it with the sauce and cheese. They also fly in their sausage toppings which is an added plus.  Now don't come here if you're expecting something the likes of Pizza Hut or Dominos, you'll be disapointed.  This place is far better and they make pizza the way it's supposed to be made, not oily, and a crust with a little substance, not loafy like some places do.

There's plenty of seating in here and lots of signs and symbols from back East. Highly recommended if you're in the mood for some good pizza. For added flavor, I would suggested getting your pizza topped with the sausage and adding some red pepper flakes. You will not be disappointed.  Very authentic east Coast flavor.

Am originally from New York & am very particular about pizza and Italian subs.  The food at Florio's  tastes the same as it does at home (and the thin crust pizza is authentic to true Italian pizza which I prefer). On top of that, they have Yankee memorabilia everywhere- the true sign of a great pizza joint.

    Florio's Pizza

Best NY Pizza in San Antonio!! This is a hole in the wall pizza joint that has great service, sandwiches and pizzas!! As soon as you walk in the array of NY memorabilia is the first thing that attracts your attention!! It gives the place a great authentic feel.

The staff no doubt from the upper east coast!! And despite what people always hate about east coasters, they were super friendly. There were even some characters in the back hanging out that no doubt could have been extras in the Sopranos!!

The pizza was no doubt heavenly!! It's the best slice in San Antonio!!

I don't get the positive reviews. The size is the only part of New York pizza Florios got right. The cheese tastes low quality. Any chain pizza place can make a more flavorful pizza than Florios. Since I'm from the East Coast, I didn't mind the cashier's attitude, but I did mind that she charged us for two extra slices - without asking us - because she didn't like the idea of us doing half pepperoni & half cheese. If you want good pizza, go to Volare.

Pretty good authentic NY style thin crust. Tons of NYC memorabilia from sports teams and the city in general. We had plain cheese and are already planning on getting the special next time.

I have never been to NY but I have to assume these native New Yorkers know how to throw a good pie. I have been eating at Florio's since I was at least 10 when they were in a little strip mall at the edge of my neighborhood.  I have seen them move and grow and become the place they are now. I love this place, give me a slice of plain ole cheese pizza and I am set for days.

The place is super busy with a good amount of seating but you can get it to go.

As I see it, pizza will always be an american favorite for all ages. I had the opportunity to experience great tasting pizza with good company. Florio's has been part of Lincoln Heights for at least 15 years. It is a family-owned and managed restaurant and I had the honor of meeting Mr. Steve Florio who shared a little part of his day with us.  I am 100% a NY pizza fan, sorry Chicago! The pizza has East coast flavor, right down to the walls full of NY and NJ pennants, jerseys, flags, and photos of sports greats.  Baked in a brick oven, the pizza crust turns out crisp, light, and slightly sweet yet still soft enough as a good pizza should be.  We enjoyed the roasted vegetable pizza and the cheese pizza. Both were delicious and the toppings did not weigh down the pizza slice at all!  The cheese pizza is definitely off the hook, simple and basic but truly sets the standard of great pizza.  Cold subs are also offered here. I will certainly try their eggplant sub on a return visit.  I was pleasantly surprised to find seating indoors and outdoors which lends to a great place for a sweet date for private conversation or even a great family evening out.

Price for a slice of pizza starts at two bucks and a handful of change.  Or you can get a combo - two slices of pizza and pop for just over 4 dollars.
A great treat for those on a budget!
