flipster's aint hipster. (this can be a (+) or a ( - ) )
it has yuppy prices.
3 eensy weensy itty, bitty burgers for $8.
they were good.
the lettuce, aioli mayo and tomato were good.
the service was good.
the location is good.
IFS, ANDS, AND BUTS:
if the buns weren't excessively sweet,
and the burgers were cooked to the requested specifications,
and the onion rings were lighter,
if the place was the late, great schnack,
and the $8 margarita was stronger,
and for a wee bit more you could get bacon,
BUT it isn't schnack.
it isn't schnack at all, sob....
Possibly the worst, most distracted service we've ever experienced in NYC.
Our server was either brand new, completely clueless, or both. She didn't seem to know the menu at all, such that when my partner ordered the Brooklyn Flipster Burger (their namesake!), she was asked if she wanted cheese. It comes with mozzarella. "But cheese is $1 extra," server protested. "But doesn't it say on the menu it comes with mozzarella?" After a couple of minutes she actually looked at the menu and capitulated.
Then I ordered the Rub Burger, a spicy mesquite patty, with a slice of cheddar. I pointed to the Rub Burger. She said "Oh, OK, Angus Burger", referring to the Classic right above my menu selection. "No. Rub Burger. Rub Burger. With a slice of cheddar." I said it a total of three times.
Of course, out came the Classic Burger with a slice of cheddar. The food runner backpedaled after announcing it, and tried to claim it was the Rub Burger he was delivering when I asked. But the truth was on the check.
MAKE YOUR SERVER REPEAT YOUR ORDER BACK TO YOU. Or don't go at all.
I went to Flipsters a few weeks ago. Very nice place, i really loved the decor. I wish the weather was a little nicer as i would have loved to sit outside in the outdoor seating area. Honestly, I was skeptical going in here because i used to be a big fan of BBB. And let me tell you this place is better, the staff especially has improved greatly. They kind of sucked when it was BBB. My waitress was very kind and attentive. The service was very fast and the food was great. A fully stocked bar and a knowledgeable bartender is always a plus in any eatery. I hate asking for a certain type of drink and the barkeep doesn't know what the hell you're talking about. The prices were very reasonable and as i said before the food was vey good. I'll tell you one thing, you are not gunna leave hungry. Im definitely going back.
toodles.
I just want to say, the reason why I give this a bad rating was the service. hear me out:
1. the waitress was rushing us to take our orders 3 times and we obviously didnt look ready yet.
2. when we got our burgers, we noticed where it was dry. and why? she never asked us that how well we wanted our burgers. and we werent the type of people who liked it well done.
3. after I put the money in the little book with the receipt, the waitress never gave our change back.
it was fine because she never got a tip.
seriously. I would care less about no1 but no 2 and 3 just ticked me off. This was also at 4pm on tuesday. Apparently, at 4 pm theres a long line of invisible people waiting outside. =/
ps. the strawberry milkshake was super... fluffy. it tastes like pink ponies and rainbows. burgers? so so. but it tasted better last year in the park slope food tasting event. so basically, their burgers tasted like lies.
This place was terrible. The hostess wasn't paying attention as confused patrons wandered in, some seating themselves. Our server never came by to see if we needed anything once the runner brought our food out. The burger was bland and the size of a McDonald's patty only much more expensive.
Also-and this really bothered me for some reason-the menu said you had a choice of bun, but when i asked for an onion bun the waiter looked at me confused and then brought it to me on a regular one. That really pissed me off. And then I had the runs.
Stay away!!!
What is it about this corner of 7th avenue and 9th street? Is it cursed? I've been to this place during it's various incarnations -- Bar Minnow, Brooklyn Burger Bar -- and every time I'm never really impressed. So why did I go back? There's something convenient about its location and sometimes, especially after drinking wine in the park all afternoon, you have the munchies for some bar food. While service was decent, our wings and popcorn chicken were ridiculously salty. Hey, I like salty food, don't get me wrong! But this was nearly inedible.
I wonder how long it will be until this place becomes another bar/restaurant?
Go for the double; the ailoi mayo might be the trick, but I've got to say, I sure like the double. Skip the lamb burger, & the rub. Onion rings a-okay, pesto garlic fries not as good as the sound, chicken bits pretty spicy all things considered. Oh, Six Points on tap, & I'm a sucker for Six Points. The wait staff IS permanently distracted, but I don't mind.
The burgers are not as good as the previous owners by any means also not awful. What was awful was the loud sorority twit YELLING to her friends about some other friend named, "Sarah Smith." She was so loud and obnoxios that people left the outdoor seating for some peacful eating indoors. Being a normal person, my fiancé and I got our food in a timely fashion but I am pretty sure the staff were purposely not bring the harpy and co food, hoping they would just leave.
That made our dining experience here suck so maybe the burgers would taste better if they did not come with a side of loud ass bitch.
Oh, Flipster's, I want to give you five stars, I do. Your burgers are delicious, and your fries are really good. Your beer selection is excellent, and you have a full bar. You've always done so well until . . .
Saturday I stopped by with the husband. It was mid-afternoon, and the place was quiet. We tried to order iced tea, but the waitress informed us they were out. Fine. It was a beautiful weekend day - I can see that. She comes back. I order a chicken pesto burger with roasted red peppers. They're out of red peppers. Um, okay. Then I say, nevermind, just give me a rub burger (their delicious, spice rubbed patty) with cheese and avocado. They're out of rub burgers. What?
Flipster's, you only have four or five burger options on your menu. And the one you're out of is just a spice rub. What's up with that? And what's up with your waitress not telling us about all the missing menu items from the get-go? Dudes, if you're out of that much stuff, tell us right off.
We were so frustrated at that point (and scared to order something else) that we left. Oh, but we still had to pay for our untouched sodas.
Next time we go we're checking on certain menu items before we sit down . . .
all right, I really wanted to hate this place because I really liked Brooklyn Burger Bar!
Football season is here, I wanted wings and burger. Had been drinking through the first games. Dram Shop is block further than Flipsters from so I decided to try it.
We had the Wings and the Sliders and they were both very good. The Wings were crispy and not wet and dripping in sauce (my GF hates that), but still were very flavorful. The Sliders with I believe Aioli sauce were good as well! As for the atmosphere I have always loved that space because so much of it opens on to the street. The service was good and it was not over priced!
I will be returning for Wings take out that is for sure!
Flipster's was one of the only bars we could find while walking down 7th. The decor reminded me of a cool basement bar, with exposed brick, dim lighting, and tin ceilings. The bartender was new there and he was great, only problem... NO BEER ON TAP! WTF! Oh it was there, waiting to get in my belly, but there shit was broken...errrrrrrr! So I ordered Delrium, which I like, and eventually we gave into ordering their 10 wings for $3. They were like real wings too, which I wasn't expecting. They really weren't that hot, but edible. They had some interesting looking specials for the week. But I wouldn't write home about this place
The burgers here are fine. Not amazing, and not a great value, but fine.
What was recently disappointing to us though was the pseudo happy hour menu that didn't include a veggie burger. And the fries a stupid expensive.
Why should a very casual dinner of burgers and fries for two adults and two kids cost $60. It's crazy. I'd rather go to Rachels for burritos and margaritas for less, or get a better burger at the Park Slope Ale House.
Hi there. I'm Cecilli and I would like a Bison Burger and zucchini fries please? Oh word? You DO serve that here because I was just kidding. No seriously I want that right now. please.
New Years Eve 2008, 6 p.m. maaaybeee 4 degrees outside. Starving.
Looked at the menu. Loved the prices and the warmth!
I believe the best part about the experience was the constant flow of people, it was never too crowded. The food was great!! Our waiter (recent import from Colorado?) was so cool and never hounded us.
It was the perfect start to a great NYE.
Thank you so much Brooklyn!!
Your strawberry milkshake at 10PM satisfied my craving for a strawberry milkshake. Your steak fries satisfied my craving for mediocre fries that smell really good. They smelled like they would taste really good too. I guess I should've ordered a burger with those fries. Will come back to get some burgers...
I'm surprised to see some mediocre reviews of flipster's because i think it's pretty flippin' good. It's not fancy schmancy or gimmicky, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Their veggie burger is one of the best veggie burgers I have ever had. First off, they're vegan, which is always good to know. It's the kind of veggie burger that is lots of colorful veggies all mashed up into some mushy, delicious mess and then deep fried...mmm.
Their sweet potato fries and shoe string fries are superb, as well. AND magic hat on draft? Yes please!
I think this place is better for dinner than for lunch only because the atmosphere is so much better and buzzin' when it's busy. Every time I take friends here, they say that their burger is damn good.
I love this place. The Surprise Burger is my favorite - stuffed with delicious bacon and bleu cheese. The first time I ate here I was astounded by how juicy and mouthwatering the burgers were and that all the ingredients were so fresh. I often come on a sunny afternoon and sit outside on the patio, watching the dog and baby parade that is Park Slope and I must say I find it quite enjoyable. I had some questionable soda there once, but otherwise, for a nice burger joint with a sports-bar feel with a modest patio (not huge, but comfortable), I really have no complaints! I have come back at least 4 times, just for that delicious Surprise Burger. I'm interested in checking out the weeknight happy hours that promise an abundance of cheap bar food. Highly recommended!
this place is huge and really nice. TVs and a fully stocked bar.i remember passing by when it was BBB. i will say this my bartender/waitress was a real sweetheart and was real genuine but she managed to mess up my order. having only 3 people sit at the bar the other two gentlemen were already taken cared of. i ordered a turkey burger and i ended up with a http://cheeseburger.it wasn't a huge deal she was ready to take it back and give me a turkey burger but at this point i was hungry and i didn't care.they have good beers on tap and there mud pie is delicious. don't be turned away from the bad reviews. give this place a shot and maybe then you can go ahead and bash it.but in the meantime have a burger and a pina Colada
and please
DON'T FORGET TO TIP YOUR BARTENDERS
Hey, Flipster's. You happen to have a giant cow painted with the American flag out in front. My friend and I, starving after yoga as we stepped off the subway, saw it and had a "oh wait, guess that place isn't Brooklyn Burger Bar anymore" moment. Whatever. The important part was that I was about to eat my hand and probably would have had I not walked into a restaurant --any restaurant -- at that moment.
Unfortunately, it was your restaurant where -- so hungry at this point that I was about to put my head down on the table and cry, BTW -- we experienced the most inattentive service I've had in a really long time. Hey, I get it. You're understaffed. But my friend and I putting down our menus and staring you down for a good five minutes should have been a clue.
The goat cheese option for my veggie burger? Good -- thanks for the option. Liked that you had sweet potato fries, too. But worth the wait or the money? Uh, nope. Not even close. But I'll be sure to give your cow a sympathy pat on the way out.
The burgers and steak fries are quite good here but the Veggie Burger IS TO DIE FOR! So good that I returned within one week to eat it again. I am not a vegetarian, either, but this veggie burger may eliminate my need to eat beef burgers for a long long time! The peak organic amber ale on draft is delish!
Take Brooklyn Burger Bar, tweak the fonts on the menu, and pour on a thick head of condescending new branding and you have "Flipster's", the latest eatery to which I say "poo poo".
Excited and optimistic that the former, inconsistent-but-average restaurant was replaced by another burger joint, I gave this place a go tonight. The burgers remain okay, causing me to revisit my review for Brooklyn Burger Bar: "I like that BBB offers such a wide variety of burger choices, from standard to Kobe beef. A shame, because with different management they could easily become one of the neighborhood's most solid offerings." Ahem. Or, maybe not.
I liked our waitress -- she was genuinely nice, and far more attentive than previous servers I have had at BBB. But me and my dining accomplice actually -- get this folks -- BOTH sent back our iced teas. Really, how do you screw up iced tea? I actually like New York City tap water, and freely admit to finding it completely drinkable. What broad ranging and exotic alchemy, therefore, can conjure up an iced tea with a flavor suggesting a mishmash of flat beer, fermented malt, and chlorine? It had foam, for Pete's sake. The thirsy customer nearly flipped out.
The fries, a side order in a restaurant where your $9 burger does not automatically come with them (which might not be a problem if the overall experience was stellar), were both soggy and undercooked. Fries are not supposed to be white. I simply adore Potatoes, usually insisting on capitalizing the sacred tuber's name as a proper noun. Here, sadly, they were in the end not worth the calories. A single side order, left unfinished by two people.
Seriously. Is the name supposed to be a cutesy evocation of "hipster"? I am not amused. Poo Poo. There, I actually even said it twice. The only thing worse than disappointing food is a flippant attempt to re-brand the kitchen that serves it. Everything about Brooklyn Burger Bar has been fixed -- except what was actually wrong.
Ok, first I must admit that I don't eat the buns that come with the burgers so my review is a bit tainted. I shall simply rate the meat which was real tasty. I had the bacon burger (no bacon on top, bacon inside - this is an excellent idea). I wasn't asked how I wanted my burger....I don't know if the server forgot or that's just how they roll at Flipsters - either way it had a real nice crust on the outside. The peso fries were good, but would have been better hot. Unlimited fountain sodas - that's how I roll.
If I'd read the reviews here first, I probably wouldn't have stopped in! It took what felt like forever to be seated - was it seat yourself? Stand on the steps forever? Help!
My food arrived quickly and tasted ok. It didn't blow me away, but the burger was tasty enough. All the same, I'm glad I got a glass of wine with dinner. That way, I could pretend that I got an overpriced glass with a super cheap burger & fries - what a deal!
I have to take a star off for poor water service. I hate when I have an empty glass when I'm out to eat. :(
Another star off for awkward patio furniture. Only a small child would be able to put their legs under the table comfortably.
Not my favourite place by any means. The food is kind of bland, at least the burger wasn't anything impressive. And the milkshake that I got was also pretty flavourless. It's kind of dineresque, although it has a bit of outdoor seating with places to put your pets while you eat. But there's not much else going for this place except for its convenient location and its standard food.
Went here once when it was Brooklyn Burger Bar. Bad food and bad service. My roommate found pieces of bone in his burger! Need I say more? Needless to say, I was apprehensive of going back to this place, even though it changed ownership. I decided to take a chance since my roommate offered (hey, he was the one that had bone the last time, not me!). Boy was I glad I went back! Major improvement! I had the veggie burger, roommie had the bison burger, we each had a side salad, shared the sweet potato fries and had some beers. Delicious! I will definitely come back when I'm craving so brews and that great grub!
Came here tonight with a bunch of friends for burgers and some beers. we split fries since they are kind of stupidly expensive. i had the surprise burger, others had the classic and one had the rub burger. they're not stupidly big burgers which i actually appreciate. they're a normal size for a normal person. but make sure you ask for your burger more pink than you actually want it, otherwise it'll be medium well. service was actually really good, our server made a few mistakes which were quickly corrected. not bad for a Monday night.
The boyfriend and I were really excited to try this place. We arrived hungry and tired... it was nearly empty at 7:45 on a Thursday. We ordered a couple of beers and wings to start. The beer was warm. We couldn't get the waitress to come to us. (Did I mention the place was empty!) After 10-15 minutes, we walked up to the bar to ask for colder beer. This seemed to annoy the bartender and the waitress. They said they would look into it. Another 5-10 minutes passed. It turned out the keg refrigerator was unplugged and all the tap beer was warm. The waitress advised us to wait twenty minutes for the beer to cool down, but begrudgingly let us order bottled beer instead. (She did not apologize for originally insinuating that I was lying, for serving warm beer, or for making us wait but instead treated us with subtle contempt.) We also ordered burgers and fries at this point, and mentioned to her we were starving. We were sitting near the open kitchen and I couldn't hear them cooking our food. After another 20-30 minutes passed... with no luck flagging her down (she was chatting up the bartender), I walked up to the kitchen to make sure they had not started our order. Boyfriend suggested I just enjoy my drink, but after our beers were long gone and no more were forthcoming we then went to the waitress and asked for the check (for the bottled beers). The waitress looked surprised. I explained, very politely, that we had been waiting almost an hour and the kitchen hadn't started our order... not even the appetizer. Poor stupid little thing looked like she was about to cry... she knew she should have checked with the kitchen. She pleaded with us not to leave. We promised to come back another time (doubtful, but we didn't want to upset her further). We then ran across the street to the burrito place just as it was closing at 9 p.m..
In a nutshell: bad attitude, warm beer, no service, no food... how does this place stay open?
Methinks not is right! There are plenty of places in the Slope to get a burger that far surpass this place. Our service was horrible! I had to track down the waiter several times to get him to come over and take our order. The food took forever to come out and people were walking out left and right. The food was OK but it was SO overpriced! It's $10+ for a burger alone... you have to order fries on the side. And no one told us that one side of fries feeds 2 people. We had so many left over fries we couldn't eat! Not to mention that not ONE bottle of ketchup had any ketchup in it! We had to wait for that and whatever condiments we needed as well. I will not ever consider going to this place again..... Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.... Dram Shop, Chip Shop.. whatever...
OMG! Pesto garlic french fries! When I think of this place that is what I remember most. The best fries EVER! I Looove pesto. Also nice in the summer since all of their doors open.
Worst Place ever! Soggy fries, the bun was a Wonder Bread soggy bun, and terrible service! Took us 1 hr to get our food, which is absurd, its just burgers and fries, and ridiculously expensive for such crap. Shocked people actually think they're decent.
The "surprise" bacon + blue chez stuffed burger? Did I really order that? It came on wax paper that looked like newspaper... and the Sweet Potato Fries were pretty darn good... but, a stuffed burger? Really? I should have gone for the KOBE burger instead of clogging my arteries.
This place has one of the best burgers in Brooklyn hands down. We started off with wings and Stella beer which is a relaly great combination. I had the lamb burger and my friend had the three mini burgers. Both were excellent and we were so stuffed and satisified by the end of the meal. Next time I would come here with more people because the wings really were more filling than we expected. Only drawback was the lone giants fan who was yelling whnever they scored a touchdown, but I guess that's to be expected at a place like this which feels like a small town college bar.
I like it. Although not from the area i cannot complain for the prices.
this place sucks. its brooklyn burger with a new name. same problems with service, same problems with delivery, same average burgers. If you want a good burger in the slope, try corner burger (5th ave at 6th st)
