Good place, somewhat affordable in Hayes Valley, been there a grand total of two times. Both times were for lunch on gorgeous days, which is great because of their outdoor seating.
Clipper Flipper both times, burger was cooked as ordered with good sized chunks of avocado. Not too large that it becomes a mess problem, but not small enough that would warrant you to open the burger to check. Definitely go with curly fries, I mean when was the last time you had curly fries. Good place, good service, and good food.
Not a place to jump for joy or drool over, but definitely solid. -

I went to Flipper's for lunch the other day. One word will sum up my experience there: average.
Average food and average service...that's pretty much it. I had a burger called "Taste of Russia", which was just a mushroom cheeseburger. The taste...nothing to write home about. The steak fries were surprisingly good though.
My friends ordered the sausage crepe and some kind of omelet dish. They both looked okay. My friends did not rave about them.
The price wasn't too bad ($9.75 for the burger), especially for San Francisco. One thing to point out...the outdoor seating was great, especially on a nice day. -
Review from Kevin J.
With a name like Flipper's how can you go wrong, right? The menu is a bit all over the place with burgers and fries in various selections, but the falafel and hummus additions seem a little out of place. Don't get me wrong, I welcome change and invite new food in constantly, but when you go to a "Gourmet" burger joint, you expect the best of the best... right?
OK, fair is fair, maybe I didn't expect the best from Flipper's, but I knew I was going to get a great meal at a decent price. And you can't beat that side patio when the weather warrants some attention.
I've heard wonderful things about their milk shakes and burgers but I opted for the Caeser salad with grilled chicken and curly fries. Odd selection, I know, but well worth it. -

There is nothing gourmet about this place. That being said, I've certainly had worse (in other cities), but in a city full of great burger options I wouldn't bother coming here.
Burgers are $9.75 each which includes steak fries (but add an extra buck or so to swap for curly fries, they are better). I ordered the Patty Flip, which is like a patty melt. Eeh...OK though I had to smother it in thosand island. My husband ordered the Clipper Flip which has cheese & bacon. The bacon looked pretty good, but the burger itself was suspect. I ordered my burger well done once I saw the establishment and figured I better not take any risks. My husband ordered his medium which he regretted so he opted to hardly touch his burger.
Decent selection of beer (mostly bottled) and the service was fast and friendly. Outdoor seating is probably great in good weather.
Problem is - with places like Super Duper or Barneys (which also has outdoor seating), there really isn't a reason to come here. -
Review from Mike H.
After venturing to Flipper's for a namesake gourmet burger, I feel embarrassingly dumb. Their motto of 'Simple Food Done Well' is admirable but misplaced. My burger tasted dry despite being cooked to medium and topped with tomato, lettuce, cheese and bacon. My strong suspicion is that the patty, and not just the fries, were frozen, not fresh. The patty didn't appear to be a half-pounder, either.
The restaurant appeared run down, to be blunt. Paint was chipped everywhere on the walls and doors. The door to the patio contains not one but two substantial cracks/holes of several inches long and up to an inch in width. The bathroom wasn't much better, though at least the porcelain elements had been cleaned recently.
If you like country music and Music Choice channels, you'll love the TV. They're clearly off the Giants bandwagon here, and as a fan of the visiting team playing that night, and willing to tolerate SF cheers, my server's response was confusing and disappointing: "I don't know how to use the remote....I'd prefer not to change it." (You can't operate a Comcast remote? Really?)
Since my comments already are far harsher than usual, I'll speculate that Flipper's survival in Hayes Valley will be dependent mostly on price, not quality. Given the number of very good restaurants now in the neighborhood, you probably won't be disappointed by avoiding Flipper's. -

I've been living in Hayes Valley for years and coming here for years. I love their burgers specially Papa Flip with chicken, Salonika with garden patty and Blackend Salmon salad. Also, you really cant find good food under $10 in Hayes Valley. Cant complain, really. Their dinners are reasonable priced too.
I def recommend this place!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Bad bad bad if there was a negative star I would leave it. We had compassion on the Big Flipper so we decided to stay but compassion quickly led to disgust. Yelling at the staff coughing in his hand an counting money while serving the far from gourmet food was kust the start. Gourmet hamburgers should at least be hot. 5 out of 5 meals were cold despite the fact we where right next to the kitchen. Then there is the bathroom ... Can't even go there it was so bad
Not sure how this place could rate 3.5 stars, considering all the great restaurants in the Hayes Valley.
Trust me SKIP the FLIP!! We will never go back even though the outdid seating looked inviting. :( -

This place is much worse than I remember it being. The burger was tasteless and so was the toppings. I'm guessing the burger was frozen.
However the fries were good enough so 2 stars!
On the other hand, the bathroom was dirty and there was no toilet paper. So maybe only 1 star?
Nah, 2 stars it is. -

I went here for lunch with my wife with our dogs on a sunny afternoon. We've been here before and one thing that we love about the place is that they're so dog friendly. I got a salad with a cup of Chili and really enjoyed it. Next time we're in Hayes Valley with the dogs we'll gladly go back.

A great place in Hayes Valley to grab delicious burgers and steak fries. Take a the opportunity to sit outside on their spacious patio on a nice sunny day! *sizzle sizzle*
Visit this joint and try the following burgers:
-Taste of Russia: mushrooms, caramelized onions
-Clipper Flipper: avocado, bacon
-Maui Sweet: Canadian bacon, pineapple, teriiyaki sauce
Great atmosphere, friendly service. You get tasty and quality food on what you pay.
Side tip:
They serve brunch on the weekend until 4PM. I still need to try, so I will come back here on another sunny day in San Francisccooooooo.

Review from Kelly T.
The burgers are pretty good, but then again, burgers are pretty darn good most places!
I think that it is a small stretch to call them Gourmet, but they are decent burgers and they do have just about any kind of burger you'd like.
My favorite is anything with avocado and bacon on it. Yum yum.
They do offer take out, but in my experience, you enjoy their fries better piping hot.
There is some outdoor seating, and if the weather is nice, I recommend you grab a seat out there. -

This is a place that is in Hayes Valley and for the amount of food you get has excellent prices... Compare to everything else in Hayes Valley. We have been coming here since we moved in the area 5 years ago and you cannot beat those burgers! Plus on a sunny Sunday you can sit outside and get a tan! And beer & mimosas oh my!!! Service it's fast and dinners are cheap. Come by and have a pint it's a great place!

I hadn't been to Flippers since it was a Cajun restaurant which is a long, long time ago when I moved into (formerly and firmly NOT happening)
"Hayes Valley."
So with Stacks closed and my 4 yo insisting on a hamburger and milkshake, we headed across the street to Flippers.
They have a bazillion options for what fixins' you want on your burger (I choose the Russian with Swiss cheese and lots of sauteed mushrooms, yummy!) My little one had the child's size cheeseburger - which was the same size as mine except $3 cheaper (nice!)
The bubbling fountain in the courtyard kept my little one occupied until his root beer float (served with an extra glass of root beer for refills, a nice touch) and hamburger with curly fries arrived, thus giving me a few minutes to sip my Stella Artois and soak in the beautiful early evening.
Service was speedy and friendly but I did have to flag a bit to get the "to-go" containers I first refused (4 year olds, they change their minds likethat).
All in all, a solid place for a little city refuge, good service, great burgers and a slice of alfresco dining in the bustle of Hayes Valley.
I'd like to try Flippers for brunch and maybe a late-night bite - and definitely again for an early evening dinner with my 4 yo.
Thumbs up. -

I'm a burger enthusiast. There is no other meal as perfect and comforting. Flipper's is one stop on my quest to find the best burger in SF...
This place is kind of awkward when you first walk in - should I wait to be seated? Or do I just pick a table? Should I grab a menu from this stack on the floor next to the door? Is that a waitress? Even after sitting here for an hour, I still can't confidently answer all of these questions... although I will say - just sit down, one of the staff seems to eventually come through to take your order, but maybe grab a menu on your way in.
This menu has a TON of stuff. We're talking pasta, risottos, salads, sandwiches and then burgers on top... I've become more skeptical of these all-encompassing menus recently so I decided to just stick with what they had in their title... burgers.
We got two burgers, one had avocado, jack cheese bacon (+ LTO) and the other had grilled onions and BBQ sauce. Both of the burgers came out looking to be pretty average. Over-cooked a bit, pretty dry and on an average bun. Meh. The toppings were well done and I do admire their creativity with some of the special burgers on the menu. After we were finished we sort of just felt that they were average burgers, with average fries. Generally it didn't look like anyone there was to be blown away - kind of like the feeling of an upscale diner. There was a decent beer and wine menu and it looked like there were some good happy hour deals.
I just couldn't really figure this place out - its not a sports bar, its not a diner, its not a take-out place and it's not a formal sit-down restaurant. The menu has about every American-y meal you could imagine and it all looks OK.
Bummer... I wish this place had been better since it has such a great location and looks so intriguing from the outside. -

I am nothing if not very clear while ordering a meal. When my friend Tall Tony invited me to lunch here today, I assumed it would be yummy since it's been around so long. We grabbed a table on the patio, and I informed the server I needed my burger extremely well-done. I know, I know -- not a popular request among most carnivores, but it wants what it wants. He repeated it back to me, and all seemed groovy. Our food was delivered by someone else, who dropped it off and disappeared. We never saw anyone again. Not only was my burger as pink as a cheap carnation inside, there wasn't anyone to ask for more fire or a replacement. Seriously, nobody checked on us and after an eternity, we had to ask another table's server (who had magically appeared) to ask someone for our bill. I first showed her my anything-but-well-done burger and explained I never even got a chance to send it back ... assuming it would not appear on our bill ... as a courtesy ... but nope. Clearly, they are honey badgers and just don't care. My first and last visit, I assure you.

Flippers is pretty bad. There's nothing gourmet about it and I'm only throwing in an extra star because the curly fries they sell tastes like the kind I used to make at the place I worked for a quarter in college.
I really don't get how they are able to stay in business in hayes valley when there's so much good food around. -
Review from Kris T.

I really wanted to like this place. But sadly, this place is by no means gourmet and really overpriced for mediocre food.
My wife and I started off with the cheese sticks, which by themselves were delicious. Seriously, I would of rated 4 stars if I had just gotten the cheese sticks.
I got the "Taste of Russia" burger, which btw, its just a shroom and swiss... didn't know that came from Russia.... do they even have hamburgers in Russia?
Anyway, when I went to use my knife to put on some mustard... it was all crusty and nasty. I can forgive that, so I asked my waitress for a new knife and a side of mayo. It never came. She totally forgot us and we didn't see her again until she cam with our check.
As for the burger, it was nothing special for $10. My curly fries tasted like cardboard. Honestly, I felt like that the curly fries you can get a jack in the box tasted better. Even the table next to us agreed the fries were sub-par.
Next time I'm in Hayes Valley, I'll look somewhere else for a bite to eat. -

They need to drop the word "gourmet" from their awning and their inflated prices for the food they serve. All I can say is rent must be high in Hayes Valley.
The quality of their burgers doesn't justify the $10 they're charging for it. Tried the "flipper burger" = BLAND.
If you go here, eat in the patio or at a table facing the window so you don't have to look at the plus sized gentleman (I'm assuming the manager) who sits at the table next to the restroom.
He likes to stare at people eating and add his $.02 cents to conversations if he's an ear shot away.
Bland over-priced burger with a big dude staring at me eat = CREEPY!
I've had better at Nation's for half the price. -
Review from Lisa P.
The burger is certainly delicious, but I don't know that I'd want to call this place "gourmet" by any stretch of imagination. It boasts a nice sunny patio but service is slow and not very warm. The appetizers are pretty standard for any burger joint - jalapeno poppers, chili cheese fries, mozzarella sticks... the only thing "gourmet" would be the prices. I think it's pretty overpriced for what you get.
If they either classed up the joint a bit and hired nicer waitstaff to justify the prices, or dropped a dollar or two from all the menu items, I'd be happier with Flipper's because as I said, the food is tasty. But it is what it is. -

Gourmet burger. You have got to be kidding. Our party made the mistake of trying this place on a Sunday. Two of us ordered burgers while the other two ordered breakfasts. The meals were consistent. All were luke warm and terrible. During our 5 day stay in Hayes Valley we ate breakfast at Stacks once and the fabulous bakery on the other corner of Hayes and Octavia twice. We also tried 3 other restaurants in the neighborhood for dinner and they were all good. We were all kicking ourselves in the head for trying this place for our last meal in SF. We ripped the place apart for a couple hours on the way home. Our waiter was the big guy mentioned in several of the other posts. He definitely needs training about service and hygiene. If you insist on trying this place, I would recommend a beer on the patio and skip the grub.

Stopped by here yesterday with some friends. We were very happy to see that they had outdoor seating since it was such a nice day.
To start we ordered the Chili Cheese Fries. The portion was huge! I am glad we all decided to split it! They were really good, the chili was hot and had completely melted the cheese. The fries were big cut steak fries which made scooping up the chili really easy.
For my main course I ordered the Patty Flip (a patty melt) with cheddar cheese instead of swiss. It came on rye bread and had grilled onions. I ordered it with a salad that was coated in a delicious house made vinaigrette. The burger was really good, it was the least greasy patty melt i've ever had, and I appreciated that while it was a burger it still felt like a lighter meal. -

San Francisco, CA
On the plus side, the big patio is perfect for a sunny day.
I ordered a patty melt, which fell apart as I ate it, so I had to finish it with a fork and knife, as if I were some civilized human and not the sloppy burger eater I intended to be. It was the least greasy patty melt I've ever had, which I appreciated, but I wonder if it's really the grease that holds your typical patty melt together. The meat was meh.
I ordered it with a salad, which was covered in some sweet dressing that was awful, so I couldn't even finish that.
I did enjoy eating half the curly fries off my companion's plate, but they weren't anything special. They were kind of reminiscent of that moment in the late 80's when curly fries were all the rage.
The waitstaff are an interesting ethnographic mix and perfectly competent. -

Really good burgers, although there are a bunch of other things on the menu. I primarily stick to burgers or breakfast. They have a nice out door patio, good selection of herbal teas and decent coffee that does not taste like mud.
Parking can some times be a challenge, but if you in the mood for a burger - you will enjoy Flippers. -

Went for brunch to sit outside. There werent any tables outside so we sat inside and asked the hostes and server to be moved to the padio when a table became available. Long story short when we moved to the padio per the instructions of our waitress the manager raised is voice at us and made a huge scene. He was a complete ass. Not worth it. If your looking for brunch go to Stacks or burgers hop on the 6 or 71 and go to Nickie's. I gave them a second, third and fourth chance because they are close to work but it was a waste of time.

Review from Jake W.
I had a few friends in town yesterday afternoon, who also had a few friends in town and they were in Hayes Valley and wanted something to eat. They had been out bar hopping and were "ravished". We walked past Flippers and the smell alone brought us in.
Of the five of us, four got burgers and one got a wrap and every one of us loved our selection. I can't speak to what exactly they ordered but I opted for the Flipper Melt, aka Patty Melt, and it was hands down the best I've ever had. Crispy, buttery rye bread with a nice slathering of sauce, a healthy portion of grilled onions... it was awesome. The fries left something to be desired but I didn't care about those because the taste of the melt picked up the slack of the fries.
The guy who had the Eggplant Wrap literally six times groaned about how good it was. It was pretty damn big too and looked good. I think the other three folks had the burger with pesto (Milan Flipper maybe?), the Mexican Flipper and maybe it's called the Granny Flipper (?).
Anyhow, we left there with full, satisfied bellies without too much of a dent in our wallets. -

Don't let the name fool you, they do more than just hamburger's right.
French toast comes with a fantastic pecan butter, priced right, great patio area in the back- dog friendly (and since I don't have room for one here in the city it's a good way to live vicariously through someone blessed with more square footage than me).
Highly Recommended. -

All I wanted on the sunny day that I visited Flipper's was a burger and a beer. The beer could have been taken care of anywhere, but what I wanted was a big juicy burger that would hit me with meaty goodness. Not so much here.
Maybe it was the time of day and the staff just wanted to chill during that window between lunch and dinner, but don't let on. I ordered a beer and a Hawaiian burger. In my mind you get a nice juicy wedge of pineapple, maybe grilled, with a nice slice of ham. Instead I got a small dice of both with teriyaki sauce. It got messy and nothing was really plentiful enough to get a nice sweet and salty spike that I want in a Hawaiian burger.
Big gripe: my server came over to me and asked if I could pay so that she can leave since her shift is over. The lady didn't really check up on me or anything, and then I felt rushed. There's more tactful ways to suggest that, she could have even introduced me to the servers that was coming on and said she could transfer the table. I shouldn't have to feel like I jerk for wanting to enjoy the patio on a sunny day. -

I ordered a "crepe" here once. Once. And it was doughy with a not so tasty cheese and a jalapeno thrown in the middle of it. Not kidding. Stick to the name of the place and order a burger. You'll be much happier. I like the Copenhagen and the Taste of Russia.
If you want a crepe in the neighborhood, try Crepe House just a block or so down. -

The service & ambiance are terrible. The curly fries make it worth it.
I've been here a handful of times. I'm vegan so I get a tweaked version of the eggplant sandwich (suzie sandwich or something). The first time it was really good but since then the eggplant has just not been cooked right. I keep going back for the curly fries.
The staff is not very knowledgeable about menu item ingredients, & I'm sure I'm not the only one coming in asking about vegan options. They are also very slow & don't come check on you.
I agree with everyone else: it is not gourmet, & it is overpriced.
But those curly fries. -

We were meeting up with family in the city, and our eating was out of sync. (you know, where some people just ate, and you are famished, and have to eat NOW to get caught up with everyone else's eating schedule) So, I see Flippers, and decided to try it.
There was really nothing gourmet about the burgers, but the worst part of our experience was the waitress. Even though we gave her a complete order, I don't know if she couldn't understand us, or what, but we had to repeat ourselves several times. When she asked me how I wanted my veggie burger cooked, I was sure we were in for a very messed-up order.
The order came back correctly, but our waitress did not. She was so busy filling up catsup bottles, she didn't even come back to us until we were done eating and waiting for our bill. When she got to our table, it was obvious we were done, but she started filling our water glasses. In the mean time, I observed another waitress bring in a dog bowl from outside, dump it, wipe it, and then serve food with her dog-germie hands, Yuck.
I think the waitresses may be over-worked as they had to bus the tables as well as serve food and that is why 2 stars instead of 1.
The food was ok, but not worth the price for the bad service that came along with it. -

Gourmet burgers. Less than gourmet brunch.
My review three years ago suggests they live up to their name for burgers. Not so much for brunch:
- Chaotic seating process. Or lack there of.
- Long wait for food. Shouldn't take thirty minutes for pancakes.
- Crunchy butter. Would skip no matter what but was intrigued for all the wrong reasons by how hard it was. Almost bent my knife.
- Disinterested waitresses. She didn't utter a single hello or thank you. I'm sure she uttered something when she saw my 10% tip.
Blueberry pancakes were OK. Far from star redeeming.1 Previous Review: Show all »

A friend nd I were craving burgers but didn't want to go too far so she Googled 'burgers' nd it brought us to this place.
The neighborhood is very peaceful nd nice. I just loved the atmosphere! This place wasn't too hard to find, they have a huge 'FLIPPER's' sign. Inside looked charming nd nice but I didn't get to have a good look because we decided to eat outside. WRONG CHOICE. Even the waitress showed some surprise. Waitress: "Outside? ...Alright. Yeah, go ahead." On our way there the weather was nice nd for a few minutes it was like that. Until the birds came. Then it got chilly. I'm fine with a temperature drop but i cannot stand pigeons. Ugh. I won't hold it against them though...
Before coming here, I had planned on a burger with mushrooms nd bleu cheese. Then when I was sitting nd scanning the menu, the sudden urge to have a burger with avocados took over. They had two burgers that came with avocados so I was deciding between the two. As i was deciding, I continued to read each nd every burger that they offer. That was when I finally decided to go with something new nd sounded delicious: the Milan Transit. (I think that's what it was called) I got it with curly fries nd well-done.
My burger was DELICIOUS! It wasn't too big or too small at that. The burger came with pesto nd the combination is genius. Pesto on a burger = yum. My friend ordered some Hawaiian burger that came with itsy bitsy pieces of Hawaiian style/teriyaki steak/pork/beef (sorry i don't know forsure) nd it was also delcious. They gave us a very generous proportion of their great tasting curly fries.
As for our waitress, she was friendly, attentive nd punctual. She checked up on us often asking if we were 'alright'.
With alright prices, a friendly atmosphere nd delicious food, this place is most def. RECOMMENDED. I know I'll be coming back ;] -

Had the Milano Transit... jack cheese and pesto. Not bad, but it made me wish I got it medium instead of medium-well. The chili fries are great, the wings are decent. I think had Super Duper not entered the picture (THE City gold standard burger), this would've gotten a higher rating.

I like this place. This is a place where I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for the service, ambiance, and food. They have a great patio seating area. If the weather permits, this is a great place to hang out and enjoy the sun. They also have brunch menu on the weekends and it seems as though they would do a good brunch as well. Why? You can tell from the back that they run this place like a well oiled machine.
The burger here is a little on the pricier side. I hate fufu burgers.............you know the type of burgers where they add foie gras, exotic mushrooms, truffle oil, etc. Then charge you 25 dollars for it!!!
Just give me a burger!!!
Definitely get the seasoned fries, their salads looked great as well.
I will definitely come back. -

The food was decent and the prices were ok. However, the wait staff was very rude to us. One employee yelled at us for taking a table after we were informed to "sit anywhere" and then another employee was shooting dirty looks to us. Even though the food was decent, the staff was horrible. Our waitress was nice, but very forgetful and never checked back with us after dropping off our food. Our first and last time there.
