Ferndale, MI
Ferndale may be loaded with salons, but allow me to point you in the direction of Flip and Chelsey's stylist chair. Have you ever had the experience of walking out of a salon, having not only been pampered, but truly listened to by the person managing your coif? Well, that's what happens when I see Chelsey. Her pre-wash, pre-color and pre-cut consultation will leave you feeling settled about what would look best. Said consultations have led to me making interesting and dramatic changes that have left me very satisfied and without a shred of remorse, unlike other salons. She will ask plenty of questions to make sure you're on the same page. Enjoy your time here and with her. Not only is she skilled at what she does, she is a fantastic conversationalist and downright hilarious.

Review from Andrea M.
Detroit, MI
I was a regular here for weekly nail services and I will explain why I stopped coming. I will start out with the positive. Anna is an excellent nail technician whose manicures last a good amount of time and she carries high end excellent products. However, her customer service skills are very poor. I will preface this by saying I love animals, am vegan and have a pet of my own; however, I do not think animals belong in the workplace unless you are legally blind and need assistance. She has a dog in the store and she pets the dog and does not wash her hands while she is giving you a manicure. Totally unhygienic; however, I tolerated it because the manicures were good. But here is the main reason I stopped coming. One day I called the front desk to inform them I was running late to my nail appointment and it was explained to me that she would not be able to see me because she had another client. I was fine with that because it was my fault I was running late and I took personal responsibility and apologized. We hung up and after I was able to pull over from driving, I called to reschedule the appointment for another day. The front desk informed me then, not at the time of my initial call that Anna wanted to charge me $23 for my missed appointment. I would have been fine with that if this was their written policy and I had signed an informed consent that I would be charged for missed or cancelled appointments. I never signed anything, was never informed of their policy, and never given fair warning. I did end up paying the fee, but vowed that I would never give my business again. I was perturbed by the fact that the front staff were very cold in informing me and Anna did not inform me herself or follow up with me. It was as if she did not value my weekly business. In the future, if they haven't done so already, I suggest Flip Salon create a policy and have customers read and sign it, or post a sign somewhere like many salons do. Customers should be informed before they are charged.

I can be kind of a cheapskate- and so it wasn't until a Groupon appeared that I finally gave Flip a go. That's when I met my new hair-girlfriend, Chelsey... she didn't judge me for having attempted to dye my hair at home.
I've since been back regularly to get my hair done by Chelsey - I always love my color, and she gives me a cut that I can do something with. My husband jokes that when I go to get my hair done that I'm there forever - but I don't really mind because the conversation flows well enough that the time kind of flies by.
So the stylists here are way trendier than me, it's true - I am not cool. However, I've never felt uncomfortable here or out of place. I pay more than I used to on my hair - but from the compliments I get after an appointment here, I think it's money well spent. I love supporting businesses in Ferndale, I love that Chelsey and I can laugh at poop jokes, and I love coming here to get my hair did.
P.S. - They do a lot of different events here as well. Get on a mailing list or something - they have art events and different classes and things of that nature. I've never been, but it sounds pretty neat.Listed in: It's a Beautiful Day in the…, Feels Like Home

I can't review the hair-styling part of the salon, because my hair is did at Steven B's. But I just want to bestow 5 well-deserved stars for Flip's occasional art nights.
Local artists' works are displayed all over the walls, and the local arteratti come to imbibe on 2 buck chuck and coronas. It is a little bit of paradise, and reminds me of why I love living in Ferndale. Looking forward to the next one (Check their facebook page for scheduling)! -

I actually went to Flip because it has received great reviews here on Yelp. I recently moved to the area and as a woman the biggest pain in the ass is finding a new salon. You have to find people you connect with, don't feel uncomfortable sitting with for hours on end and who can also do a great job of getting your hair right. For me Flip feel short and won't be my salon of choice in the future.
The stylist listened to what I wanted but didn't ask questions in great detail. I had to more tell her what I usually do and she still missed a few of the key points, like where I part my hair. Any stylist I have ever visited in the past first asks where a woman parts here hair so they can cut and color toward that!
I got full highlights and a haircut with layers. For the highlights the color turned out nice but one of my biggest upsets was that the color did not go all the way down to my roots. There was a half inch difference and I thought it looked bad. This error was only because she didn't dye my hair to my hairstyle. If she would have asked where I normally part my hair and dyed it to the part this wouldn't have been a problem. I get bright red highlights so they have to be prefect against my brown hair or they look like a home job instead of fresh. Everything else with the color turned out well (good spacing on the highlights and vibrant color) except the part of my roots that weren't dyed. It looked like I needed color, not that I just got it.
The haircut was decent. I get layers cut into my hair and asked her to do more with the layers and make them more defined then what I have had. She did a good job with the cut and the layers and I liked them.
The price is comparable to other high end salons in the area. You aren't going to find a great deal at a salon in Ferndale or Royal Oak so though it's pricey it's comparable to anything else local.
Overall the experience was mediocre. Good color but with major mistakes, the cut good, the staff were not that friendly to me and I didn't make a good connection here to return or recommend. -

Dean's been cutting my hair for a few months now and I can't say enough good things about it. The conversations good, the haircut is spot on, and the price is just right. It's certainly not the cheapest haircut in town, but it's well worth the few extra dollars.

That's right! I'm gonna review a salon! I may be a man, I may be over weight, and hairy as hell, but I am gonna tell you why Flip is the best salon in metro Detroit...
For starters, my guy there, Dean gives the best mens haircut in Michigan. I know this because I have experienced more high-end hair salons than any man ought to, ever. My girlfriend of 4 years works in the beauty industry. She has relationships with every salon in the area and I have been FORCED to try them all! I wont name names, but suffice it to say that I have experienced everything Birmingham, Royal Oak and other cities have to offer and Flip is doing something unique.
Simply put, Flip is not a douche bag salon. There is no boom-chick, boom-chick music. The stylists are not dressed like hookers and the space has a nice warm and inviting feel. While Flip is modern, it is not pretentious or sterile feeling. It is surprisingly not loud - even with all the blow dryers. They have managed to create a space that is uniquely comfortable.
If you are a dude, go see Dean! He will make you look handsome and then you can get some. If you are balding, shave yer head - but do it at home and save some money! If you are a lady, they can hook you up, make you foxy and you wont need to dress like a hooker any more! Leave that to the stylists at the other salons! -

I was REALLY looking forward to going back to Flip (Chelsey) for a cut and style to see if I loved everything as much as I did the first time, with the big question being "Are they going to keep their 5-star rating?" My answer? HELLS YES.
Chelsey? Still awesome.
Customer service? Still great (I needed more meter time again).
The cut and style? Exactly what I asked for.
I love Chelsey and I love this salon. I will miss it desperately when we move next year...Listed in: Troy Area Ventures, Shining 5-Star Specimens

Clawson, MI
After reading the good reviews I decided to try out Flip since I'm searching for a new salon in the area. Not impressed, the stylist got dye in my eye (OUCH)! Equally bad she stained my skin terribly and then handed ME a towel to clean it off. I'm pretty forgiving but that's unacceptable.
The cut didn't work with my natural wave. Other then a stained hairline the color was fine.
I won't be heading back. -
Review from Heidi M.
Sorry, I really wanted to like Flip and at first I did but each of my returning visits seemed to be worse than the one before. At my first visit I seriously loved my hair cut, even though it took over two hours for just a cut. At my next two visits I did color and a cut, but it just wasn't the same. My stylist seemed to be bored, or distracted, or something but not into what she was doing.
Overall I found the salon to be a bit pretentious, not very friendly, and a little over priced. -

I have a process I use to test salons. It's the simple phrase "suprise me". I just had this idea in my head that if I was too specific I would be making the stylist lean in a direction that may not necessarily look good on me.
I've had absolutely horrible luck with this method the past, but this worked out perfectly at Flip. My only indication of what I wanted was that I wanted to spend no more than five minutes getting ready and I want a trendy cut.
Flip passed the test with flying colors. -

New York, NY
I've had two haircuts at Flip, and this last one is far and away the best and boldest haircut I've ever had! I am so happy with the way Katey -- and previously, the way Shelby -- really listen to what I want, patiently look through the pictures I bring in and answer all of my (likely ridiculous) questions before they even wash my hair, much less bring the scissors to it. I'm extremely particular about my hair (anecdotal evidence: I hate trying new stylists so much that when I moved from Chicago, I managed to stay with my same stylist there for over 2 years after I left by fitting my haircuts into my weekend visits to my friends in the city), but I can wholeheartedly say that I have never felt my hair (and new bangs!) look better.
Not to mention, the staff is so accommodating as well! This past cut was scheduled with Shelby, but when she got sick, the receptionist Danielle called me first thing in the morning to deliver the news, then helped me reschedule by listening to what I wanted (bangs) and recommending Katey (a bang genius). I was fit in later that same day, and Katey made me feel so comfortable with her that I went for the bangs, even though I never otherwise would have trusted a new stylist to such a drastic cut.
Thank you Flip for your amazing service! You have a new lifelong customer :) -

Sterling Heights, MI
I've had a couple really good experiences at Flip. I originally had a stylist named Julie who was really nice and gave me great highlights. She has since moved on, but I've also gotten a great haircut from Shelby. I let her know that I was growing my hair out, and that I wanted to be able to style it both curly (naturally) and straight, and she gave me a really nice, versatile cut.
My only reservation was the price... haircuts STARTING at $50! Most of the nicer salons in Royal Oak are cheaper than that. For that reason, unfortunately, I won't be returning.
I also attended on of their Blow Dry workshops (which is how I met Shelby). The stylists were SO nice and patient, and I really learned a lot. I can sometimes blow dry my curly hair completely without a flat iron! I also got a discount on products. I would really recommend one of their workshops. (I hope they have a curly hair one soon!) -

It's always hard to find a good stylist, but a great stylist is nearly impossible. FLIP is an awesome salon located in the heart of Ferndale.
Great service, great price... great stylists! Fun atmosphere - friendly, cool staff. Katey's my gal and is fantastic! -

You know someone is doing something right when you walk into a Salon and you are transported into a Parallel Universe of beautiful people.
Flip is a full service salon in Fashionable Ferndale. I would recommend Irene or Dean, but honestly you would be safe in the hands of anyone working. The salon itself is so aesthetically pleasing that you will want add on treatment after treatment just to stay all day long! Irene has a great selection of vintage hair accessories, and they carry all of the best hair products. (including Bumble & Bumble!)
When you leave Flip, you can wander the streets of Ferndale looking for your Mr. Right but I cant promise you he wont also be looking for Mr. Right!!
Street Parking with another lot behind the salon. -
Review from Toni C.
I am so happy that the other reviews on Yelp led me to Flip. I desperately needed a cut and color and I haven't gone to a real salon in a while so I had to just pick a new place based on the recommendations of others. So I ended up at Flip and walked out with healthy, bright, flow-y hair. Irene picked the perfect color for my highlights and even touched them up for free (I had a serious root situation going on). The staff is awesome (shout out Jean!) and makes some great coffee. I really liked the products they use too. The Bumble and Bumble Quench shampoo has made a huge difference in the feel of my hair. They also use a line called Prive and Moroccan Oil which smells amazing.

I fell in love with Flip as soon as I heard the lovely Zooey Deschanel crooning on the radio. I knew I was in a unique place.
To begin, I was running a tad late because I could not find a parking spot to save my life (so get to your appointment a bit early, just in case), and they were totally nice about it.
My stylist, Marcie, sat me down, felt around my hair for a bit and confirmed my suspicion- my color was starting to look a bit drab with a slight orange tinge to it- and not the awesome citrus inspired orange that Marcie is rocking, but a "I-have-hard-water-and-it's-turning-my-hair-a-funk y-color" orange. She said it was no problem, she'd just add some foils, touch up the roots and tone it. The whole while we chatted about everything. It never felt strained or awkward, just like I was having a conversation with a super hip chick.
She rinsed and washed me and snipped my poorly neglected ends and I was out the door.
In short, Marcie and Flip are fabu! I scheduled my next appointment, which seriously never happens. What can I say? I flip for Flip. -

Katey is still rockin' my hair, and I love it, but I went to see their new Brow professional, Nancy, last week. Holy crap!!!! I think she is a wizard. I mean, truly, my brows have NEVER looked as amazing as when she did them. She plucked them, which i was definitely not used to, and shaped them and showed me how to fill them in with make-up. I have very thin brows that really don't do much, and I walked out of there with glamorous arched eyebrows that are extremely simple to recreate at home. I love Nancy and will be back, and highly recommend her to ANYONE who wants perfect eye brows!!!

I'm a guy and I like to have crazy hair. I go to Dean. He mixes it up and always has great advice and ideas. There aren't many places in this world that will make you look like a rock star. Kudos to Dean for making it happen over and over.

My regular stylist was on vacation so I decided to try something new and Flip fit the bill perfectly. The salon is adorable - hip without any pretense - and Marcie gave me a fabulous haircut and colour. I walked out feeling like a new girl. Everything about this place impressed me including the Bumble & Bumble hair products. I will remain loyal to my local guy but expect to look forward to an alternative now and again.

I tried Flip because of the Groupon deal, which was $35 for $100 of hair services at the salon. I've been going to the same woman for hair cuts and color since I was born, so I figured something different would be fun for a change. I didn't request a specific stylist and I got Marci, who was great. I am trying to grow out my hair so I told her I just wanted a trim and I had blond highlights, but wanted an all-over color that was close to my natural color, but with some pizzazz (because I'm too lazy and cheap to keep up my roots). She started out my checking out my hair and figuring out the best way to cut it. I normally part it on one side and she parted it on the other side and I couldn't believe how different (and better) it looked. I definitely needed an impartial person to figure that one out for me. Then she brought out a book of hair color samples and helped me decide which looked best and off she went. I was in love with my hair when she was finished! I only wish I could have Marci come style my hair everyday, because two days later when I washed it and tried to recreate the style I was not as wowed by it (not that the style she gave me was hard to style, I just don't have the magically skill of blow drying that a professional stylist does). But nonetheless I was still happy with it. Total hair cut and color was about $115 + tip, so the Groupon helped. I don't think I could justify spending that much on my hair every 6-8 weeks. Marci did tell me that she does free bang trims between hair cuts, which is a nice offer. I think in the end I will stay with my regular stylist. However, I will definitely go to Marci when I'm in need of a change.

I've been searching for a stylist who will TALK (and listen!) to me before cutting - and I found Shelby at Flip Salon. She did a great job - the best cut I've gotten in a long time. I am very pleased and would definitely recommend this salon (all the stylists looked to be very professional and personable), and the place has an easy, relaxed sort of retro vibe to it. Nice selection of products and boutique items.

I love Flip salon! Not only does Irene, the owner, give the best hair cuts, but she has introduced me to a new line of styling products that are the best! I have super duper curly hair and don't trust anyone to cut it. Irene has cut and colored my hair amazingly from the get go! I recommed her to anyone of any hair type. My friends go to her as well and love it!
