I really like this place, kinda?  I've never been there for breakfast.  I'm light on pastries.  So I go for lunch.

Chicken salad salad, really good.  Some of the best chicken salads in all of Chickensaladatia.  AND the pulled pork. Really good. (not a big fan of the bread it's on, It's the kind that I feel as though I need to eat with razor sharp teeth).  But hey, just my opinion.

I also like the "we only have one wall and all the rest are basically windows' vibe too.  Nice and bright.  I mostly just get it to go though.

I DO wish, they had more on the lunch menu.  I get hungry, you know?  Sometimes, I just want to eat food that's not chicken salad salad or pulled pork.  They do, I believe have made to order sandwiches, but I like for people to decide for me what I want to try.  Make sense?  Of course it does, cause I said it.

    Jason, over and out.

Well, we had ourselves a busy little Saturday! Stopped here on the way back from the Hollywood library and on our way to the Hollywood Farmer's Market.

Lived in the hood for almost two years, and am so glad I finally made it! We tucked into some lattes, split a ham, swiss and egg breakfast sandwich (we asked to switch to cheddar, but NBD they didn't do it).

Impulse bought a potato donut -- and, THIS IS CLASS -- they give you the donut hole you'd otherwise be missing out on. This is what I'll be coming back for - cinnamon goodness, just the right amount of crispyness on the outside... le sigh.

Super happy to have this within walking distance of my mouth.

I come here every Friday morning with the children I nanny for, and we all really enjoy it. There is a small play area for kids to entertain themselves, a ton of tables to choose from, as well as amazing pastries and coffee to partake of. I'm a huge fan of the Spinach Ricotta Croissant. It's so buttery, flakey and amazing that it's been hard for me to try too many other things. I really recommend getting here as early as possible though, because it does tend to get crowded in the mornings!

Everything I've had here has been very tasty, sandwiches, pastry, I'll be back for those.  My main issue is how long it takes to get order and get your food.  During a semi busy lunch, it took 20 minutes to get my sandwich, and that was after waiting in line to order for about 8 minutes.  If it had been a weekend it wouldn't have been such an issue, but for a weekday, they really should try and get people through the line and their food in maybe 15 minutes, not nearly double that.

I ride my bike daily past this place on my commute to school and figured it was about time I go in and check
It out. The place has a great outside patio, and is really cute and open on the inside. I ordered the house made pork sandwich and a baguette To take home. The sandwich came really quickly and had it's pros and con's, the bread was divine, so soft and moist with a crunchy crust, but the house made pork (the only meat they claim to be House made) was very lacking in flavor and kind of dry, the faro salad they served was really enjoyable other than the grain being severely underdone. All in all the other parts of the sandwich (the bread and dijon) and the ambiance were really great so it made up for the lack of flavor in the pork.

    Absolutely ridiculous ordering process.

I walked in famished, glad to see that there were only three people in line ahead of me.  Fifteen minutes later, when I finally placed my order, I was a little irritated.  Why fifteen minutes?  Because the poor girl taking orders also had to: cut pie, make coffee drinks, deliver food, take orders back to the kitchen and probably clean the bathrooms for all I know.  The were other employees schmoozing with regulars but no one pitched in.

When I finally ordered my veggie sandwich, I asked if the $2.75 (!) iced tea came with free refills, since y' know, it was $2.75 for ICED TEA.  Nope on the refills, $.50 per.  Since I was post-gym and thirsty that meant a likely $3.75 iced tea.  No thanks, I'll take water.

The serve yourself water was empty, of course, so I took the pitchers up to the counter to help the poor counter girl out,  Five minutes later it was refilled.  Five minutes after that my sandwich came out, delivered by a kitchen worker who won the award for Surliest Service Worker on the Planet.  Congrats, guy!  He slammed (no lie!) my plate down and asked in the grouchiest way possible, without making eye contact, if there was anything else I needed.  Uh, no thanks.

My sandwich was fine, if small, the bread was great, but there was hardly any veggies in it.  For $7.50, I think they could be a little less stingy with lettuce and tomato.

It all sounds two-starish, right?  Here's what bumped it to three: Since there was no line, I picked up a focaccia with mozzarella, tomato and basil to have with dinner.  As I ran errands after, the oil started seeping through the bag and I couldn't help myself.  I tore into it at a red light.  Wow.  Another bite and double wow.  I had to stop myself from eating all of it.  Perfect balance of crunch and softness with just the right amount of cheese.  I'll stick to running in and grabbing that to go from now on and give my best sympathies to the overworked counter girl.

Note: If you are one of those Yeeps who is allergic to children, avoid Fleur de Lis at all costs.  They have their own play area and run rampant.  Also avoid if you're allergic to skinny yoga ladies, they seem to flock here too.

A little about the place: Fleur De Lis is located in the Hollywood district. It's homey and spacious inside with heterogeneous tables and tablecloths scattered throughout the confines. There is a nice patio in front which will be happily visited by yours truly in six months when it's sunny again.

    Almond croissant review:

Big strong flakes. The croissant dough is standard. Not extraordinarily delicate or excessively flaky.

The filling: generous, thick, and sweet with a powerful almond flavor. Fleur De Lis is the most gregarious with their almond filling thus far in the smack down.

Almond croissants are $3, which seems to be the standard going price thus far in the smack down.

If I were a more violent or forward person, I'd probably break in and steal every ounce of baked product and store it away at home where I'd gorge myself on their rolls, pastries, and focaccia until I pass out or the police find me.

Best white bread in Portland. or Oregon. or even the WORLD.

My true zeal is directed at their chewy flour dusted rolls.

They supply the bread to my two favorite food carts, Big Ass Sandwiches and Lardo (omg, Lardo), and their rolls take those sandwiches from great to freaking phenomenal.

Their sweets are good, believe me, but I'm in it for the bread. Their onion focaccia is intended to be shared, I've never ever shared it with anyone other than Me, Myself, and my Greedy Tummy, and I've also never felt guilty over it.

Ask them to slice up a ciabatta loaf and use it at home to make grilled cheese sandwiches and you will OWN your family - they'll be bent to your evil will and they'll do anything you ask.

If you've got time on a Saturday or Sunday morning, head on up, they tend to have live folksy music in the mornings and a variety of yummy breakfast specials.

I'm a little confused upon entering whether Fleur De Lis identity is a Bakery, a Cafe or a coffee shop.  Certainly none of the wonderful selections from their website were on display under glass. The Chalk Board menu lists breakfasts, sandwiches and Coffee drinks. The pastry case certainly doesn't inspire one the way Pix does, but the bread looked good.

I ordered the Quiche of the day. Mushroom, Spinach and Feta. Blah, Meh, Ugh. Unseasoned, void of dairy, Uninspired. The slaw that accompanied it was also devoid of flavor. In fact, the best tasting item on the plate was the slice of Orange.

It will be interesting to see what is in this space next year, because this rudderless ship will surely run aground if their identity crisis is not addressed. Too bad, because it's a wonderful location. Would it hurt to put some art on the walls and give the place a decor makeover?  Not at all.

I've been trying to find out a way to write an exciting review without resorting to, "OMGTOAST!" But weeks have flown by since my stop at Fleur De Lis, and still the only thing on my mind is my everlasting love for Fleur De Lis' toast.

Now I'm pretty sure toast generally falls on the blander side of the breakfast spectrum. When you can call gravy, fried chicken, Moroccan sausage, real maple syrup, scallops, brie, roast beef, lox, chocolate, whipped cream, gouda, ham, and BACON ALL OVER EVERYTHING breakfast, toast is definitely the wallflower of the party.

But when I put that FDL toast in my mouth, it was like a party. A two person (or rather, a one girl-one toast) party. First of all, how about a round of applause for the most expertly toasted piece of bread ever? Crisp all the way through, with just a bit of softness in the middle for what I like to call the NOM (because that's when you'd ever release a primal, gutteral "NOM NOM NOM" at anything...toasty middles of toast). And after that first delightful piece of toast, given that you ordered a breakfast omelette or something of the like, YOU GET ANOTHER NUTTY BUTTERED JELLIED PIECE OF HEAVEN. OMGTOAST! TWOAST!

Okay, so the rest of the goods are definitely delicious as well. But toast...you hold a very special place in my heart.

Update: You can buy a loaf of the goodness for $5.75! Pricey, but who cares? Multigrain 4 EVA!

I loved this cafe/bakery! The cinnamon rolls are delicious, and the Thai pumpkin coconut soup, amazing !
The people working where super friendly and helped us narrow down what we wanted off the menu, since everything looked so tasty!
I can't wait to go back!
Would have put 5 stars, but had to bus our own table and wait in line for an ice tea refill. But will definitely be back!

I can't give it 5... yet. I had a stump town latte and very delicious cinnamon roll. VERY DELICIOUS. I need to come back before I can up my rating...need to get a meal. but here are some high lights...

it wasn't noisy. its cozy. soft jazz in the back ground. nice change of pace from the usual coffee shops.

one downfall for me... no wireless internet. I can't study here and its perfect setting for it.

Delicious breakfast in a nice locale with a large outdoors area. Pastries and coffee will hit the spot on a Sunday morning when you are too lazy to prepare breakfast. However, the place is frequented by families with children and babies so be prepared for the crying competition coming from all directions. Not a big deal since tables are placed far away from each other.

There are so many places to eat in Portland. I'm always trying to bookmark spots, but its difficult. On the way to return a book to the library I came across this place. My gf had mentioned it before, but the both of us did not recognize the address. This little gem is tucked away in the backstreets of the Hollywood area. It's located where the old Hollywood library used to be. First and foremost, its a super good bakery. Fresh and delicious. Croissants, Ciabatta, cookies, you name it, they got it. Second, its a great breakfast, bruch, lunch cafe deal.

Digs: Just look at the photos in their Yelp. A very pleasant, spacious cafe with lots of light and earth tone tiles. It is extremely comfortable. Not to fancy, but not shaby at all. I have a hard time eating in place that is too fancy. So if you are looking for a fancy fancy joint, this might not be what you are looking. I love it though, its perfect and relaxing. Good for breakfast dates or for small parties.

Service: Awesome. Some really nice folks. Everyone seems to be really close, and they are well prepared so its not a high stress kitchen. The bakery and is a part of the restuarant, which is cool cause you can see them baking, but it does not interfere with your experience one bit. It actually enhances it. Everyone is super nice and super chill. And they got Stumptown. Buya.

Food:They have a variety of paninis and omletes. I think the menu changes daily, because everything they had was on a chalk board. I went witht he chicken apple sausage, mozarella, mushroom omlete with toast (made in house of course). It was only $7.50 and worth every penny. I would have easily paid $9-$10. It was perfect, it was exactly what I wanted that day. (Hence my rave review). It was a cold Sunday, stopped in for brunch, and was completely satifised. Made the rest of my day awesome. This place is pretty safe, and you are sure to have a good experience. 5 stars baby!

This is just a review on their plain croissants.   I think they were recently written up in the paper as one of the best croissants in the city.   Well....they are good and buttery but they lacked the right crunch, the bread inside was too spongy, and finally there was not enough salt and it had a slightly sweet after taste.  Not the best in Portland.   Try Delphina's..... More buttery, more crunch on the outside, layered bread on inside, slight salty taste.   Mmmmmmmmmm!

What does Garden State, Little Red Bike Cafe, and Bunk all have in common?

They're in Portland. People love them on Yelp. And they all get their Ciabatta rolls from Fleur De Lis.

With so many of my favorite sandwiches being made with this bread, I thought why get some myself.  I called and found out I could purchase limited amounts of  the sandwich sized Ciabatta!

They smell awesome, are crusty on the outside, soft airy chewy on the inside, and make amazing hamburger buns!. At a dollar something, they're not cheap but a great value considering the exceptional artisan quality.

Also worth trying are the monstrous onion rolls.

I've never liked baked things too well.  In small midwestern towns like the one I grew up in, cinnamon rolls are made of eight inches of fondant covering an old shoe, and brownies taste like ditchweed and despair.

I don't know jack about French baking techniques or high-end pastry but for the first time in my life I like cinnamon rolls -- so light and thinly glazed they melt like a spicy cloud -- and walnut brownies made of butter and chocolate so soft, so delicate it's a little embarrassing to eat them in public where other people can see the faces you are making.

I could say a lot about the sandwiches, esp. the vegetarian with all that avocado served on their own fresh bread -- the perfect, perfect olive cibatta -- and the way they stick a clementine in your to-go bag just to make you smile.  But the real reason you need to hotfoot it over there is that they've got a true baking genius in the kitchen just doing his damnedest to help you forget your lousy childhood.

We've been here many times for lunch and/or treats and it's always the same experience. Food is good but service is rushed and a bit agitated. You stand in line to order and you better do it fast and don't ask questions! Not a super warm and fuzzy vibe but I don't require that.

They have a nice little corner for kids with small toys and books.

Hot tip from my chocoholic husband: get the chocolate chip cookies when they're hot from the oven. I'll attest that the cookies are pretty good anyway, but warm sounds even better.

Fleur De Lis is a welcome addition to the Hollywood neighborhood.  It is co-owned by Greg Mistell, who started the Pearl Bakery, and hence not surprisingly, the quality of the bread and other baked goods is outstanding.

The space is not the greatest - it is in the former Hollywood Library Branch  but they have done a reasonably good job a brightening it up and there is plenty of table space.  The high ceilings and large windows do give it a bright and airy feel.  There is also a nice outdoor seating area.

They also serve lunch - soups, sandwiches, quiche, etc.  The food is OK, but not great - certainly not up to the level of the baked goods.  Fleur De Lis is a great place to stop for coffee and a croissant in the morning, or to while away an hour or two during the day studying or working on your laptop if you have that kind of schedule.

Oh my God!!!  I struck gold today.  I am a HUGE fan of FINE croissants and in the 9 mo. I have been here I have sampled a number of them trying to find the best one that will compare to my first ones (discovered in a lovely bakery in Nantucket in 1988).  Originally, I went in to Fleur De Lis to apply for a job.  I bought a ham & cheese croissant and sat down to judge.

The pastry is light and flakey.  The ham is quality lean and sliced thin.  The cheese is not a thick slice of Swiss...in fact, it permeates lightly but distinctly inside the delicate shell.  This yummy pastry practically dissolved in my mouth!!!

I wish the cafe had WI-FI but I think they do not because they don't have a lot of room to have people sit and lounge for an hr or two while people are trying to sit and eat food at the somewhat limited seating.

I don't know whether or not I will get the job...but that is irrelevant.  I will be going in to enjoy their food/beverages for as long as the quality of their croissants remains as good as they are today!!!

Our lunch was pretty good. Quiche was yummy, cookies were great. Soup and sandwich were good, not amazing. Coffee was wonderful.

Minus one star for having to bus our own dishes. Not that we're lazy or anything. It was just awkward to have the two young girls who worked there call us back to our table to bus it as they sat sharing a pastry in the main cafe.

    1. JMHO, but there's something not right about asking your patrons to do this, and 2. It was rude to bring us back when we were leaving. We didn't know the drill having never been there before. We left with a bad feeling.

I doubt we will be going back.

I was on a mission for bread.  Like the guys from the Blues Brothers save for the fact that they were on a mission from God.  God....bread....close enough.  Someone somewhere might take offense to that.

This place has been on my radar for a long time and I finally got over there.  Been trying to make this sandwich, the muffaletta, that I had in New Orleans many years ago and some neighbors of mine who are native to that area made me some of the olive spread that tops the sandwich.  I just needed to get some deli meat and some rolls.  What better time to make it over to Fleur De Lis?

I ended up buying a bunch of ciabatta rolls ($1.25 each) as I believe this is the closest I will come to the bread they use on the sandwich in New Orleans.  I also bought a loaf of challah bread ($5) as it kicks ass for french toast and this is only the second place in town (Kettleman's) that I've ever seen challah bread.  Everything else looked really good.  Pastries and sandwich's will have to wait for another day.

Side note.  The girl behind the counter was super cute and super nice.  We talked a bit about the challah bread and our grandparents, but you don't really need to know about that.

Haven't eaten any of my new bread items yet, but they look and smell really good and I can't wait to dig in.

Boy, sure are some picky people....yes, the wait is long--ish, but it's one of those friendly neighborhood places that takes a while.  Ever try buying just a cookie at the Laurelhurst movie theater--why don't they have just a quick line for cookies, but no....well, that's another review altogether.  But the baked goods are really good here.  Where else can you get hamentashen (do you even know what that is?) or a really good rugelah?  Their breads are terrific and I use their pumpkin muffins at my b & b and the guests rave (and no, I don't tell them I baked them...I tell them exactly where to get them).  They could probably use another employee up front, but you try running a restaurant/bakery these days.  It's a tough go, and I do think they'll be here next year, because it's a great neighborhood spot.  Sorry the previous few people had bad service--could have just been an off day, but I've never had anyone be anything but courteous.  You just can't be in a big hurry.  If you are, you're in the wrong town for that.  Try New York.

There's so much to like, just one minor suggestion.  First, they remedied the biggest detractor by retrofitting the space that now has two cash registers.  The service is very friendly and competent.  The sweet and savory offerings rival the best of any bakery.  Although very popular, I'm not a fan of the premade breakfast sandwiches as the wonderful crisp bread turns chewy fast, so best to get them made to order if you have time.  All the croissant offerings are delectable as are the almond rings.  I'm also a fan of the red pepper and ham omelet; I use one piece of the delicious toast to make a mini breakfast sandwich.  Sadly, the cappuccino needs work.  First, it's best to serve it in a traditional cappuccino cup rather than in the mug currently used, this one change would have a profound effect.  The coffee itself (I don't know what they use) is average, but the foam is too airy, it lacks texture and creaminess.  Other than that, my only other non-positive is it's like Romper Room on weekends, but this is appealing to many, so take that comment with a grain of salt.  This is a great space for the soloist or a group meeting.

Absolutely Delicious I picked up several items and they could not have been better. However the staff was almost rude. I am not sure I will go back even though the baked goods were so very good it is just hard to deal with rude service

We went here based on the Yelp reviews, and ended up eating there three times (we were staying nearby). Their pain chocolat is the best I've had outside of Paris, and they have a nice little play area for kids (with a couch for the parents). It's an easygoing, relaxed atmosphere, and close to shopping in the Hollywood district.

It's a lovely space and wow,the baked goods look delish. I was in on a Saturday and the place was packed. Good for them. I sat outside, as it was a rainy but warm day. Had a decent, not great, actually, disappointing , almond croissant. And coffee. Man, the coffee kind of sucked. I really needed a decent cup and seeing they had Stumptown, thought a cup of drip would work. No, sadly, it had that awful too-much-water-for-the-amount-of-grounds taste. Just, not so good.

Lovely space, decent location, nice that there was live music in the morning. But sadly,  bad coffee. And not such a great croissant.

We were so excited to see something new go into the old Hollywood library spot. The space is cute, if a little cavernous and loud. As for the food, well... it's okay. I had a somewhat disappointing quiche, while my husband spent too much for a sandwich that was just "all right". I think I would love this place if I had little kids to accommodate (there is a nice play area and a very kid-friendly vibe), but as I don't, I don't think I'll be back.
