My boss loves getting pastry from here.... that means I get to try a few each time he comes to town!
From what I can recall having....
Tartelette au Citron- lemon citrus taste, great tartness for those who love lemon and tart.
Passion Fruit Curd Tartelette- passion fruit flavor is there and isn't too sweet of a taste with that tartness.
Marion - seasonal Marion blackberry dark chocolate mousse dome with dark chocolate sponge cake- very tasty.
Chocolate Royal - crown of dark chocolate mousse over a thin layer of almond sponge cake and a crispy hazelnut praline base- their popular one, very good, has a great little crunch from the hazelnut base, very good.
Chocolate croissants- croissant with chocolate?? how can you go wrong? very good.
Overall, for a person like me not to like sweets much, this sure hits the spot for anyone who likes their sweets daily or moderately. Just the right touch of sweetness here!
I finally got a taste of their famous Almond Croissant. I called one day ahead and had them set aside 3 for me since the last time I went down there they were all out. It's an hour drive to Los Gatos from SF, so it's a good thing you can call and reserve them.
The almond croissants were pretty good. At $3.50, it was also fairly reasonable for the quality. It's nicely browned on the outside and when you bite into it there's that nice little crunch, which is perfect. It's not too crunchy. The texture on the outside was pretty darn close to croissants in France.
The inside was nice, but just a touch dry and I would have preferred a bit more almond filling. The flavor was excellent but somehow it was not quite as rich & buttery as the ones in France, but that could be due to the difference in butter & the flour. The ones in France are like crack... The perfect crisp with a moist, flaky interior and a rich buttery almond filling... I just can't stop eating them. These didn't quite have the same effect.
Even though it's not perfect, it is the closest thing to a real French Almond Croissant I've had in the Bay Area. It's definitely better than Tartine in SF and slightly better than Bouchon in Yountville.
I will be back to try their Quiche and other cakes.

My expectations for great pastries seem to increase with every visit I make to France which started… Read more »
i always said, this place smells like montreal belgium bakeries that were every other block growing up in Montreal...
this is the ONLY place in the bay area i'll have croissants at. i know i am a snob, and i know their little almond or chocolate croissants are darn expensive (I recall they had almond chocolate croissants at some point too), but they do it right here, and it's heavenly.
be warn, if you come in noon or later, the choice is vastly limited...
their cheese coissants are good too...
and gelato.. try pistachio, or mango...
as for the desserts, i've tried a few, they are pretty good. but i am here for the coissants!
it's a neat little place, only 5 or 6 tables but the ambiance is nice. plus i like to hoard the croissants and gorge on them privately at home anyway without judging eyes.
5 star for coissants! bribe-worthy, if you ever want to garner a favor from me.
This place might be perfect. The chocolates and pastries are stunning, both in taste and design. I can't really recommend one particular item, since everything I have tried has been truly extraordinary.
In January they make a pastry called "Gallette du Roi," which I believe means "King's Cake." My mother gets one every year on her birthday. The cake contains a small porcelain figure, and whoever gets the piece with the figure gets to wear the "crown" that comes with the cake. The tradition is charming, but the cake is amazing: flaky, dense, buttery, and scrumptious.
Maybe the coffee is a bit mediocre, but now I'm just grasping...
With the exquisite cakes and tartelettes attracting your gaze, Fleur de Cocoa's best goods are easily overlooked -- the authentic French pastries innocently laid out at the top of the glass case. The little cakes are lovely as well as delicious, but make sure to try at least one of the pastries, even if you must by bringing a small box of them home.
++ | Mini Croissant aux Amandes |
Dense rich croissant layers laced with almond paste and enclosed in a sweet sugared crust. Opt for the one without chocolate filling to maximize on the almond subtleties. Adorably sized to be paired with a small café au lait.
++ | Butter Croissant |
Delicate and light but with the slightest crunch. You can get a croissant anywhere, but you won't find it with the perfection of texture that Chef Pascal Janvier has achieved.
Pastries = $3/ea
Cakes = $6/ea
Love love love the Napoleon if thats how you spell it
yum always my favorite and only place for dessert
I went here this past Wednesday and arrived around 5:40, right before they closed at 6. She took our order and said she had to see if the cooks would make it. They did. I got French onion and the last sandwich on the menu (Madame something) and Wow! One of the two best meals I've had in California so far. The sandwich was very simple but splendid. I think it was on regular white bread which I thought was strange. But all the other parts were fantastic. For example, the thick bread in the French dip was excellent. Why did they just use regular white for the sandwich? I am not surprised that all of the good pastries are gone by noon; there were hardly any left when I got there. The tea was mango so if you don't like mango stay away (who doesn't like mango?). I'm not a big fan of mango but still thought the iced tea was great. The earl grey was also fantastic, extremely strong, and full of burgamot. My dad got the tomato soup which comes with a delightful crusty surprise. I asked him if it was as good as it looked and for once, he said yes. He also got a mixed greens salad which looked good, but it's next to impossible to mess up a salad.
I really miss Wegmans (they don't have them in California), but their specialty pastry section is crap. They look okay but taste horrible. At Fleur de Cocoa, the pastries looked...let's just say it hurt my soul that I couldn't eat all of them at once. I'm sure they taste as fantastic as they look.
I like how there's a sign that says, "No pictures please," on the glass covering for the food. Their designs are so lovely.
My first visit to Los Gatos was very impressive. Exactly what I would expect from California and this restaurant did not disappoint! In fact, I think it's perfectly representative of the whole town as in high quality, high taste, and high class.
I bought a cake here for my professor, it was the dark chocolate cake with raspberry topping. I didn't taste it but he told me it was delicious!
But I did however sample the cheese croissant and it was pretty damn good to me. If only they were bigger instead of the size of a coin!
This bakery is located in downtown Los Gatos. After reading so many great things about this place, I really wanted to check it out.
As soon as I walked in, I noticed a bunch of tasty delicate treats in the display case. I really wanted to take pictures, so I asked the lady behind the counter if it was alright. She informed me that pictures are not allowed, so I wasn't able to take any pics. She did hand me a pamphlet and told me about their website. =)
I decided to buy a chocolate eclair ($4.4), a small Dream ($5.65), and a small Royal ($5.65). All the treats were placed in a cute little box, too. When I opened the box, I noticed all the treats was stuck in place.
My boyfriend loved the chocolate eclair. The cream puff layer is so light. The chocolate filling inside was very good! It is the best chocolate mousse I have ever tasted!
The Dream was another great cake. I had to get 'The Dream' when I saw the sign indicating that it won '1st place in dessert competition'. It consisted of chocolate mousse on top of a chocolate cake and white cake, which has some carmelized bananas mixed into the mousse. This cake is covered with chocolate ganache, too.
I decided to get the 'Royal' after reading so many great things on yelp. The Royal consists of a dark chocolate mousse over a thin layer of almond sponge cake. The bottom was a crispy hazelnut praline. The Royal was a bit sweet to me, but it was still very good.
Overall, Fleur de Cocca has really great desserts, but they are expensive. I would only come here for special occassions. =)
If you have a craving for hot chocolate, this is the place to come to.
i have been coming here for years, and this is my absolute favorite pastry shop/cafe. their eclairs are simply the best! one time i went there just for the eclairs, and the guy in line in front of me bought the last one. i jumped him for it....in my imagination. the passionfruit tart and raspberry chocolate tart are some of my other all time favorites here. don't forget to try the macarons as well. they have thin crisp shells that are chewy underneath, sandwiched over and under delicious filling.
not in the mood for sweets? their cafe food is also excellent. try the croque monsieur/madamme sandwich or the tomato bisque soup topped with a buttery, flaky pastry. and of course, the coffee is a stellar complement to whatever delectable treat you decide to get.
My husband and I visited Fleur de Cocoa and the Yelp reviews are correct: this place is great! The service was friendly, the coffee was good, and the pastries were excellent. It all made for a pleasant, leisurely morning treat.
It was crowded when we first got there and we had to snag a table when someone else left, but it was not uncomfortable. When we left, we were the only customers there. Walking by later at lunchtime, it was packed again. A good sign, I say.
We're excited to go back to try the different pastries, the desserts, the hot chocolate, the chocolate candies, the tea, the fresh-squeezed orange juice, the lunch plates,...
If you like chocolate cake, you better stay away or you'll never want to leave Fleur de Cocoa. My fiancee and I visited this restaurant to do some reconnaissance on their cake flavors to see if we wanted to use them for our wedding cake. I for one am not a fan of "doughy" chocolate cakes since they remind me of something you'd make from a store-bought box. I prefer a chocolate cake that's dense, and really gets your attention when you take a bite. The cakes here at Fleur de Cocoa are just this, very dense, intensely chocolate, and absolutely perfect. The man behind the cakes, pastries, and chocolates at this place is truly a genius.
The service is also very friendly; they sniped a table for me as someone was leaving and held it until it was cleaned and ready for me. Plus they let me order my food at the counter, and didn't make me pay for it until after I had finished eating.
If you're in the area, definitely poke your head into Fleur de Cocoa.
This review is solely for brunch given that I have had their pastries before and they are definitely worth trying (although the cost might deal your wallet a few damage points).
I walked in here with my boyfriend and saw a menu on the wall with the food items they were serving and the menu at the counter with the daily special. Half the items on the menu contained eggs. We both so happened to order two of them and while the girl at the counter took our order, the manager waltzed in and announced they were out of eggs. What kind of bakery runs out of eggs? What kind of bakery in Los Gatos at the peak of farmer's market does not know how to obtain eggs? We stayed and chose alternative items, after I also had to point out to the girl that my item had eggs. For 7.20, I got a tiny baguette (6 inches) with a few thin slivers of ham and some brie and not even a little greens on the side. My boyfriend's croque monseur, although edible, was very pathetic looking. Even worse was the fact that the staff there seemed terrible. They sat around talking to each other after we ordered and then finally realized we needed to get our drinks. Needless to say, I will not be coming back for brunch since there are better options in that area.
I've been here twice. The first visit would have been a 4.5 star review. The most recent visit left somewhat of a sour taste in my mouth.
The Good- Very cute little place, and everything LOOKS great- the only thing I have tried here is a $2 artisan spicy chocolate which was great, but not sure if its worth $2. Oh and I had a decent, very small cappuccino.
Bad- Prices are incredibly high. But the main downer was the bitchy, rude attitude I got from the girl working this afternoon when I stopped in with my dad. We walked in and smiled and she gave me an annoyed look. Wow Im the customer- arent I supposed to receive the smile or maybe even a welcome??? Apparently they were closing in 5 min, but, ummm at the moment you are open- the open sign is up, the door is open. Gimme a break, espcially since Im about to spend a little money here. My dad spent $5 on a Napoleon and he wasnt super impressed. As expected, no acknowledgement whatsoever from our girl as we left. Nice.
Even though the goodies are pretty....well, good, you gotta treat people nicely who give you business. Pay a little more attention to that.
French-kissing in the USA!
Sign me up!
Finally, I walked in, ordered the pain au chocolat croissant and some hot chocolate with whipped cream.
PROS:
Croissant is melt-in-your mouth French kissing good
Good-quality chocolate and butter
CONS:
$3 for croissant and $3 for a mini size hot chocolate = $6.50 OMFG (That is a price of a pho bowl!)
It better be damn good to pay over 6 bucks for 2 bites of French flakes and 2 sips of chocolate.
But yes, worth it. Will return. Oui. Oui.
...and on the eighth day God created almond croissants and Illy coffee.
What do you get when you combine a California attitude with French pastries? Fleur de Cocoa of course.
The croissants from FdC are my guilty pleasure. If I lived even a block closer I'd probably be eating them every day. Fortunately for my waistline and unfortunately for my palate and soul I'm just far enough away to keep it an infrequent treat. Il pourrait être pire!
don't normally hang out in los gatos much, but went by this cute little place in downtown los gatos by recommendation...recommend-er was quite emphatic about how authentically parisian their food was (namely the desserts and croissants!) and seeing as recommend-er lived in france for longer than my combined study abroads i thought maybe she could be trusted...
so stopped by last month on route to monterey...and as was promised by recommend-er, it was just like eating in a paris cafe!
the quiche was perfection...warm and flaky and my tuna sandwich was amazingly fresh with capers and tomatoes...
next time pastries, pain au chocolat, and cakes, oh my!
Long overdue review as I've been a huge fan since they opened.
Traditional french pastries so delicate they literally melt in your mouth. My dad's favorite are the eclairs, I can't decide as every item I've tried has not disappointed.
Typically we take the pastries to go but, yesterday a girlfriend and I stopped by for a cup of tea and treat to stay. The apple tart was, as expected, delicious. The tea was fine enough but, not well steeped as the water they used was slightly too cool.
The service, while friendly, was a bit disappointing. I asked what varities of teas they offered and the sales girl wasn't familiar with them. She proceeded to look at the tins but, shrug and stated, "I don't know what this is, I can't read french".
I'm still giving them 5 stars as the pastries can't be beat, I'll just take them to go next time.
I've been to Europe (most especially France) enough times to know that the way we do bread and pastries in our most elegant of shops pales in comparison to any old bakery in Europe. I have searched high and low for a good croissant inside the United States and regularly find myself super-disappointed. A glimmer of hope arrived when my husband told me he had heard of a little bakery in Los Gatos that had great croissants. So, what are we waiting for?
I ordered the pain au chocolate (which is my breakfast staple while traveling) and a butter croissant. Both were delicious and flaky here. They really got it down. I ordered a decaf coffee which was flavorful, but not overly robust. My husband ordered a Napoleon, in which he loved the egg-y custard and an almond chocolate croissant, which he liked, but I ended up finishing up. His cappuccino was not outstanding.
This IS the Frenchiest bakery I have ever seen in the USA and it really makes it worth paying the high prices for it's pastries. We'll come here again to try out the cakes and lunches.
Got desserts for lunch here!! mmmm...
Satin: white chocolate mousse with lady finger with raspberry filling center. very light and devoured within a minute!!
Mille Feuille: like a napolean, but not sweet at all. very, very thick custard.
All the desserts here look so yummy!! I wanted to buy them all and try them all!!! :D I wish I could eat chocolate! :(
I have always been a big fan of Fleur De Cocoa, and Chef Janvier is the best at what he does. I was there a few weeks ago to place an order of Madeline's. I told the Chef I needed a 1000 pieces, and he just said, "when do you need it by." I said, "two day's." He looked at me and said, "okay pick it up by 3pm."
Two day's later everything was nicely packaged and boxed for traveling. He now calls me the, "Madeline Guy."
I had to visit after reading the reviews on Yelp and it lived up to my expectations. The desserts (although on the pricey side) were delicious and beautifully prepared. My cousin had just bought a Tiffany promise ring for his gf to celebrate their 5 year anniversary and I suggested that this place would be the perfect setting to present it to her.
Also I have to mention that there was a French family with two adorable blond French girls in front of me in line ordering pastries. Couldn't have asked for a more complete and delightful experience.
Delightful surprise in the heart of downtown Los Gatos. This place is a charming French Café, that is as authentic as it gets in the Bay Area.
I had a croque-monsieur for lunch as well as a delicious café au lait, and also bought some croissants for breakfast the next day. One of the best croissants I have had in this area. Wish a bakery like this (or Bay Bread) will open in the Palo Alto area!
Food: Great for breakfast
Service: Quick and friendly
Price: Sky high
Everyone was right about the prices. I got the chocolate-almond croissant for $2.75 and was presented with a round croissant about 2.5 inches in diameter. I also grabbed a pineapple crossiant for $3 (nicely laid out in squares in the back counter). The pineapple croissant was at least pretty large at about 3x3". I ate half of each for breakfast.
The pineapple croissant was made from phyllo dough. It was nice and flaky in texture, but upon putting it in my mouth I felt that it was slightly on the oily side. Are french pastries supposed to be oily? Anyway, I did enjoy the slightly sugared crust and the nice pineapple surprise in the middle.
The chocolate-almost croissant was actually quite good. I only had two bites (save the rest for hubby), but enjoyed what I had.
Next time I'll try one of those $5 tarts or mini-cakes.
Amazing! Pastries are to die for! The chef here really knows what he is doing. Did you know he holds numerous awards for his cakes? Talk about a "Top Chef". If you like bananas and chocolate, do not miss the Dream. I can not imagine a birthday with out a Fleur de Cocoa cake!
Lunch, chocolates (made right in the shop I am told), hot chocolate, and croissants are not to be missed. We are very lucky to have a chef and shop like this right in downtown Los Gatos!
The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is that occasionally I have gotten little cakes that were not fresh. The first time, I thought it was my imagination. Then one day we ordered two Marion cakes and one was very noticeably older looking and tasting. That is a real bummer when you are paying a premium price for a premium product. Customers should not have to be watching out for quality!!
It was 91 degrees in Los Gatos today. All I could think about was trying a cup of Fleur De Cocoa's infamous hot chocolate. Am I a hot chocolate addict??
First of all, the hot chocolate was deliciouso. Five stars for the hot chocolate!! It was not too sweet, heavy on the dark chocolate flavor, with a slightly nutty aftertaste.
The people behind the counter were a little underwhelming. They were clearly in high school and didn't have the answers to my chocolate-related questions. Kind of disappointing, but what do you expect for a small business located in suburbia.
The prices were a bit much. Total cost for a sandwich, French onion soup, mini croissant, Frenchy fou-fou lemonade, chocolate tart and hot chocolate set us back $30.
If you go, stick to sweet and skip the savory menu items.
Really cute shop!
I came here and got a chai ice latte and an "Eclipse".
The chai was a little sweet but good on the amount of spices. Very tasty.
Also my family said the coffee here is very good. I didn't try any but I'll take their words for it. The eclipse pastry was pretty good. No complaints!
Really cute shop! I'll be back for more!
Mmmm the cakes and tartlettes here are all so cute and yummy looking! I finally settled on a Blueberry Tartlette for myself and a fluffy Napolean for my mother...only when I came home, I found that I misordered and got the Fleur de Cocoa instead of the Napolean. Oh well, looks delicious anyway!
I also got a cute fruit-shaped Marzipan and an Earl Grey Chocolate. Total came to about $12.50...individual-sized cakes and tarts round out at about $5 each and chocolates are slightly over $1 apiece.
Breakdown on the fooood:
-Earl Grey Chocolate: Disappointingly, it did not taste like Earl Grey to me, but it was certainly interesting tasting and definitely of high quality. I would like to try another flavor next time.
-Marzipan: Not tasty, but I think the main purpose of these things are to be cute, so it served its purpose well.
-Blueberry Tartlette: Delicious, literally teeming with fresh, plump blueberries. Underneath was a layer of tart lemon curd on a soft and yummy pastry shell. Mmmmmmm!!
J'aime ce petit cafe!
The hot chocolate with whipped cream is absolutely amazing, and I consider myself somewhat of a hot chocolate aficionado. It is so rich that it is almost nice to have some ice water nearby to calm your taste buds. It is not too sweet but not too bitter. Perfection!
I have tasted a number of their pastries, most recently the raspberry tartlette and the chocolate eclair (filled not with cream but chocolate ganache) Both were wonderful!
Fleur de Cocoa has always been a little pricey, but it is worth every penny. You can tell that the staff and the head chef take a lot of pride in their little cafe and it is well earned.
Thank God for the French.
For those of you who complain about price: You can either eat a large hideous piece of dried food and nasty coffee at Starbucks or some other pathetic coffee shop for under $6...
...or you can eat an unbelievable melt-in-your-mouth pastry, and good coffee here at Fleur de Cocoa for under $6.
It's up to you.
There's also numerous other lunch items, cakes, chocolates, and so on here.
OH.
MY.
GOD.
chocosplosiorgasm.
.......hi......joon....you whore.....pimp mackdaddy. =P
I've been going here for years but i never wanted you bastards to know about FDC but i'm feeling generous tonight.
This one is simple: order the almond croissant and hot chocolate and coffee, then throw away the coffee and order another almond croissant. after you eat those, order 3 more and share them with your friends. they will then offer you sexual favors to learn where these creatures came from. If you like sex, do not reveal the source. trust me, i know, I now have 23 children, it works.
I'm not really big on the sweets, however, Fleur De Cocoa hands down has the best chocolate I've never ever lay my tongue on. Although, each piece will cost you, literally, about $1 a bite.. it's all worth it!
They also have, as some dean, as the yummiest pastries in the bay, and I couldn't agree more.
Great little place to get a some lunch or grab a cup of joe in the morning.
But! I come here for the chocolates! MMMMMMmmmmm
Bakeries and pastry shops are kind of a strange deal for me. As a general rule, I avoid them. I don't hate them like some "I'm afraid they'll take away my man card" guy. But I hardly ever go into one and I never think about having pastries. I guess if a quality pastry shop would combine itself with some really good coffee shop, I'd be there everyday.
Fleur de Cocoa is truly an exception to my quirky rule. It's like the best French bakeries, plucked out of Paris and plopped down in a little town in northern California.
Love the chocolate royal, a dark chocolate mousse cake. The Opera (pastry) and their pain au chocolate are also some of the best I've had, including those from dozens of patiserries that I tried when I visited Paris. Wish there was one like it at home in Austin.
Oh! Oh! Oh! What can I say! Oh! Oh! Oooooh sooooooo goooooood!
And yes - a five-star review from me! (A first!)
Been stopping by this little gem anytime I'm in LG since they pretty much opened. Pascal must never leave! You don't go here for cheap pastries. You go here for authentic French pastries and chocolates. His equipment is imported. His ingredients imported and he is imported (having already received some of the highest accolades in pastry from his native France).
Does life get any better than a good pastry? (Okay, yeah, with a really good burger, but when you need a pastry, this is it.)
Croque Monsuer/Croque Madame: Sooo good! (Oh gosh, now I'm craving them.)
Coffee? Great. This is real cafe au lait!
Hot chocolate? The bomb!
Croissants? Plain croissants! Chocolate croissants! OMG! REAL chocolate croissants! And really, really good!
A few years back, I had the 'misfortune' of son staying home sick from school (but apparently well enough to eat 'a little'). Had made previous plans with a friend to go to Fleur De Cacao for coffee and pastry. Okay, no biggie - son can go and have a croissant........
Four croissants later I had to tell son: "Uh, son, those aren't the .99-cent grocery croissants."
Son's response: "I know, they're really good, I need another one."
Me: "Uh, son, they're almost $3 each and you've already eaten four."
Son: "I know, they're really good, I need another one."
Six croissants total, son was full.
Their pastries are better than some I had in Paris!
Their hot chocolate is outer worldly.
This chocolate shop is really cute. You walk in and there's a huge pastry counter tempting you with all sorts of gatronomic delights, small tables edging the wall, and menus for sandwiches, breakfast items, and drinks hanging behind the counter. Best yet, the air is redolent with the sinfully decadent smell of chocolate. (Oh, right, they also sell chocolate!) Their chocolate is smooth on the tongue and very satisfying in times of distress (which happens quite often at work).
Also, my friend recently bought birthday cakes here, and I have to say, they are delicious. Wayne K. and I attended the same birthday party and had a taste of both the Red & Black and the Chocolate Royal. Although I loved the richness of the Red & Black, it was the Chocolate Royal that captured my heart. It tasted of Ferrer Roche chocolates, except with a more hazelnut-chocolate taste. The "cake" part of it tasted exactly like the Ferrer Roche shell. So absolutely delightful! My dessert tummy was in heaven that night. :-)
The baker is a god! Everything at this store is a delicacy. The chocolate almond croissant is to die for. The chocolate mousse is unbelievable. I drive 45 mts each way to eat here. The french onion is extremely good and so are their quiches and sandwiches.
Like many reviewers here, I lived in France and learned my way around corner patisseries on my walks and hikes. It doesn't surprise me at all that Fleur de Cocoa is a terrific pastry shop with real French pastries because the chef is from France. But the pastries here are in general much better than a lot of corner patisseries I went to in France. Much better!
