    Apple Fritters!! SO, SO DELISH!!

The place looks a bit scary from the street (there's a dilapidated home in front), but the donut shop in back is clean and cozy, with a deck for sitting and eating outside. The whole family (including the in-laws) loved the fritters so much we kept going back for more, and took some home, too. Try warming one up for a special treat - it smells sooooo good and tastes sooooo wonderful.

Oh, yes, almost forgot to say they sell donuts and coffee, too!

So . . I had such high hopes one day last week, driving along Route 6 and deciding that would be the day that I finally listened to all the positive reviews before mine and stopped into Flemings donuts. I always like to patronize local businesses over chains and everyone likes a tasty donut on a cool fall morning so this would  be win/win.

Stale. Tasteless. Cardboard-y.These donuts looked like they'd been picked over like a display of corn at stop & Shop on a summer Sunday night. There was possibly  two dozen donuts total in the case, scattered around to look like more than they were - I stretched to glean a half dozen assorted.

They made DD look good, they're that bad. Maybe I should have dropped in during the summer when the effort is made for tourists but never again  will I waste one thin dime here.

    I FINALLY GOT MY FLEMINGS!!!

After TWO LONG YEARS and many missed opportunities, this morning I finally rolled in and they were OPEN.  Holy shit, I nearly crapped with excitement!

And then I tried the donuts.

Look, .... they're not .... bad.  They're just not what I've come to expect from hand-cut donuts, and admittedly my expectations were running high.  Especially when I've been forced to take in that awesome wafting odor every time I go or come from the gym next door.

Before I get into the food, let me break down the whole "hours of operation" thing to help others who might have been going thru the same mysterious quest I've been on since I've been living on the Cape:

Hours: They're only open Fri-Sun, 6-11a.  This is from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but the woman behind the counter said those dates are fluid.

    CASH ONLY.

The food:  ...I got a half dozen and a medium coffee, which ran me just over 6 bucks.  The coffee was dreadful... watery and weak.  I'm not a big coffee drinker, so when I have a small cup I usually get the tingles before I'm halfway thru.. but this stuff.  I drank maybe a third of it before I gave up.

The donuts are "alright."  I got two sour creams, which are essentially "plains" with a baked on sour cream coat.  The donut is cakey and the crust really doesn't add to the experience.  I'm a taste and texture guy and I love it when pastries are able to manage those two aspects of their composition to reach a palatable balance.  The sour cream donut, I feel, is using too much flour in the mixture (did I mention I dabble in baking?  I'm not a pro but I can whip up some pretty mean bread loaves.... just sayin....)

I also got a Boston Cream, a Lemon Cream, a Jelly and a chocolate glazed.  The Boston Cream tasted like Dunkin Donuts (the ganache might be pre-packaged?), but with a slightly better texture, just not enough of the Bavarian cream.  I appreciate not biting into a Boston cream and having the yellow goo shoot out everywhere like it's auditioning for gay porn but what little cream there was, I found to be lacking any real flavor.

The lemon cream had a good texture/taste balance, just a little too heavy on the powdered sugar (if I were still a cop and bit into this donut in my Blues, I'd look like an idiot with powder all over my front), the jelly and chocolate glaze were both passable, the latter suffering from the same cake-yness as the sour cream donut.

All in all, for what you pay and what you get, this place is all around three stars.  To get another star or two, I would definitely improve upon the coffee, and maybe reduce the flour in the batter mixture by about maybe an 1/8, to achieve a more desirable dough-y texture.  Also, for the Boston cream, a touch more sugar to the Bavarian cream to bring out the flavor.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go run like, ten miles.

I'll be returning here, that's for sure.  Before a tough day of lying on the beach at the National Seashore, you really need the best nourishment you can get.  Fleming's Donuts are going to provide you with all the fat and sugar your body needs to endure those long hours under the sun, listening to the waves.

The doughnuts were great.  Apple fritter okay.  But I will stick with just doughnuts next time.  The sour cream, glazed, and chocolates were all good.  They are cakey, so grab some coffee, too.

Also, Jake B.'s comment that "at the beginning of the Summer the staff will be inexperienced and slow," was absolutely true on Memorial Day weekend.

Tried the infamous sour cream at Fleming's and I will say, it was quite good. Except that it tasted like maple syrup, possibly the icing? Less than $1/donut and have a nice variety. But beware cash only.

In the summer Fleming's, like most other establishments, becomes a clusterF with families of tourists. If you're allergic to obnoxious screaming children like me, or have an aversion to waits behind said minors, then avoid it on weekends and/or after 9A weekdays. Otherwise I think Fleming's has limited hours/closed intermittently off season but fairly worry-free.

I appreciated its old school charm, especially that Fleming's doesn't compromise its spirit with technological advances such as credit card machines or a website. Here's to you, Fleming's.

Urghhgh, still can't move normally after consuming waaay too many doughnuts from Fleming's yesterday morning!

We took a quick jaunt down Rt 6 to try what I'd been told were the best doughnuts on the Cape, and was pleasantly surprised to find a healthy selection left over at 10:30 am. A dozen doughnuts felt like a steal and gave me the opportunity to sample sour cream, chocolate, chocolate frosted, honey-dipped, old fashioned, jelly, and coconut. Apple fritters aren't included in the dozen pricing, but definitely snag some of those too!

The best were the old fashioned (perfectly cakey and not too sweet) and the jelly(powdered sugar texture was right on and the jelly filling to doughy stuff ratio was on point).

Cash only here, so consider yourself warned!

Some memories make you feel warm, loved, and in touch with being a child again.  Flemings stirs up memories of foggy mornings at the beach.  Walks with a summer love, and quality time with my family, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Each year I'm fortunate enough to visit my grandfather's house in Eastham, and seeing as I rise at the crack of dawn I'm the designated doughnut buyer. "not a bad job at all"

I can visualize is as if I was there now, I'd roll out of bed and go for a run on the beach.  Then meet a friend for a walk in the woods beneath the morning mist and white cedar trees.  Followed by a trip to Fleming's.   I'd bring back a few dozen sugary treats back to my hungry yawning relatives, we'd sit outside on my grandparents hammocks with jelly filled rolls, Boston cream doughnuts, and pretty rainbow sprinkled creations.

Fleming's is not mind blowing in the taste or texture department, but for me that's only a little piece of what makes this place feel so special.

A cute, little, (I'm assuming) family owned donuts shop on the Cape! I love it :)

The coffee was good, the donut was great, and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed his apple fritter!

And for under $10 not a bad buy for a good breakfast!

Though the older woman at the front counter was a little rough around the edges, she warmed up after a few minutes of us sitting enjoying our breakfast.

Best donuts in Eastham. Shorter lines then Flemming's. They really do "cake" or old fashion style donuts right.

    My recommendations:
    -apple fritter
-sour cream donut (dunk it in your coffee)
-egg sandwiches to fill you up with something a bit healthier and then a donut for desert.

If you go at the beginning of the Summer the staff will be inexperienced and slow, but they seem to get better as the season goes along.

This place has excellent donuts, but sells out very early in the morning. The sour cream donuts in particular are enormous and amazingly high quality. Call to reserve, though, if you're not getting there early early early.
