What a fantastic experience!
I have wanted to take a cooking class for a while - largely to encourage my boyfriend to embrace cooking - so have been looking at some of the cooking schools in Chicago. I stumbled upon Flavour and it's the perfect place to go for some great classes. The first thing that struck me when we walked into the shop was what a beautiful shop it is; it is quite large, and has absolutely gorgeous architectural features in the moulding and chandeliers. Next, your eye is immediately drawn to the large kitchen class area which - as mentioned - looks like something from the Food Network. I think I would sleep in my kitchen if it looked like that.
We took the stir fry class, and at first, it seemed that it wasn't going to work out very well; there are 12 people (max) per class, and the first thing we started working on was something that only utilized about 3 people. It picked up pretty quickly, though; the instructor parsed out the ingredients to different people and then we all got a chance to cook, try/learn a new technique and, finally, taste our creations. The instructor and other staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, and they have all kinds of great items in the retail areas of the store.
Another great thing? Parking. Forest Park has several municipal parking lots near the shop, as well as quite a few metered spaces along Madison.
When you attend the classes, you get a 15% discount on any purchases made that day - INCLUDING CLASSES. That's big. I've taken classes at different yarn shops, have had a friend take a class at another cooking place, and the highest discount offered was 10% at any of them, and I don't believe it ever applied for future class sessions. We'd been thinking about taking the Culinary Bootcamp class, a 2-day, 12 hour intro class, and couldn't pass up the opportunity today. Good timing, too, since we filled the final two available spaces (and the class is still a month away).
I know I will definitely be taking more classes here, I just wish it was a bit closer! Oh, and the class did its job: when we got home, my culinary-challenged sweetie cooked the stir fry himself, with me offering help in cutting the veggies only. Thank you, Flavour!
In this gorgeous space (right out of Martha Stewart's fantasies) you will find everything you will need for your kitchen. I bought my tangerine KitchenAid here when they first opened and have been addicted ever since.
A great selection of knives, cutting boards, pots and pans, lovely aprons and dishtowels, boutique gourmet foods, and a charming staff. What more could you want in a kitchen store? One of the co-owners also wears horn rimmed glasses with sparkley jewels on them. (I think I'm in heaven.)
Someday when I have an attention span and a regular schedule, me and the mister will take a couples' class and learn how to not cut ourselves (or each other) when chopping vegetables. Until then I will continue to buy copper mixing bowls that I may never use and gourmet hot chocolate in stylish tins, strictly for the purpose of impressing company.
Fabulous space -- I want to live here! This is a cooking school and retail store. Although I cannot comment on the cooking school per se, the kitchen area is great (looks like a set from a tv show!). This was a bank originally, and has gorgeous original woodwork, moldings and skylights.
They have a very nice selection of kitchen accessories. They are the people/place that turned me on to my new favorite label of herbs and spices (Morton & Bassett -- see review) for which I will be eternally grateful!
What a great little shop! I wish I lived closer because I would come here all the time and totally take advantage of the cooking classes. As it is, on the day we came it just so happened to be their 5 year anniversary and the whole place was in party mode. I picked a ticket out of the basket by the door and got 45% off of an item! Sweet! Everyone there was really cool and very helpful. They have some very unusual stuff for sale, and things are not all that expensive. I would definitely come back next time I am in the area.
I love kitchen toys!
Technically this is only a half review - as I have not attended a class at the school yet. However, I will strongly, highly, and happily recommend the store! They have the best of everything to make your kitchen complete. There are no shoddy pieces of equipment here - if you need a cutting board, they have the best. If you need a knife - only the best. If you need pots/pans - you know it, only the best.
Great employees as well - very knowledgeable staff.
This excellent cooking school in Forest Park (10 miles west of Chicago) has empowered me to be a better cook. I received a gift certificate from my wife for Christmas 2006. I parlayed that into Flavour's Boot Camp: two days of learning and cooking. I am afraid of no recipe or technique now. My daughter (9) and I have also taken classes. What we learned resulted in a great seven course Christmas meal for our family this year - she cooked two courses.
Flavour has wonderful instructors and a great sales staff. They feature a diverse selection of cookware, tools, and ingredients. And if they don't have it, chances are they will know who does.
Take a class! They have everything from basic cooking to ethnic specialties (e.g. sushi) to pastry (e.g. cake decorating) to mixology.
The school is cool - I went with a friend for a knife basics glass today.
We covered the following topic areas: different types of knives and cutting with knives, cutting boards, and sharpening knives.
The cost was 50 bucks for a 3 hour class. You can register for any of their classes online @ http://www.flavourcook.... There are classes daily at varying times. The instructor was great. She taught at a great pace and the class was mostly hands-on experience learning how and when to use various knives. The class was not overly crowded - each person in the class got special attention from the instructor in learning the various techniques. The class definitely increased my comfort and confidence with knives. Free coffee and water were available.
If you take a class, you get a discount for the store - ours was 15% off.
This school is awesome! They provide really low-priced cooking classes for adults, kids, and couples. They have really fun themes. The last time I went for a class here, I learned to make sushi at home! Pretty neat place. And they have a little retail store on campus so you can buy any cooking utensils you may need in class or to take home.
