Came here with my company last night for pool, drinks, and food. Hooray for getting your beer paid for!
The place is tucked away in the back of this Kendall Square area, kind of as if the rest of the restaurants here are ashamed of it. No particular reason for them to be, though. Flat Top Johnny's is perfectly acceptable, perhaps a little cruder than the rest would like it, like that one cousin that really isn't such a bad guy, really, but why does he insist on sticking around and embarrassing us?
10 pool tables and not too much room around them, but decent enough. Average beer selection. Okay appetizers, though their beef-on-a-stick looked like jerky. Their potato skins were good, though, and made up for it. On the whole, an average pool hall/bar.
I probably would never come here, except that it happens to be a useful place for big parties (my office had our holiday party here). The food is underwhelming (except for those heart-attack inducing but delicious potato skins). The tap list didn't blow me over, either. I don't play pool, which is probably the primary reason to go to this bar. So, big surprise, I wasn't all too terribly impressed.
When I was here with the office party, we got good service, but on previous occasions service has been spotty. Not too bad if you're in the neighborhood, but not a place I'd return to as a regular.
Food poisoning from the sliders. And they tasted like high school cafeteria food... in dodgy Brooklyn.
I've been coming here for a while. I think in order to really like and respect this place is that you have to be a pool player. Not a pro, but someone who loves the game, and respects a place that has well maintained tables that are well lit, nicely spaced apart, and the pool sticks aren't missing the tips or broken in half or anything. The price for pool is more than reasonable and I rarely, if ever, wait for a table.
I also like the fact that every time I've come in here, the music is diverse and great. Old school hip hop gets into a modern tune, to something from the 90's, to a classic rock song, to something offbeat and obscure.
They have a good number of beers on tap, and reasonably priced, though my friends and I usually go ultra cheap and order up a couple Naragansett's or PBR tall boys, just because they sell them so cheap. They also keep them on ice so it's incredibly cold.
The big downside, and why I can't go 5 out of 5 is that I find the service to be consistently slow. On more than 1 occasion, a world of time has gone by since our server was by the table, so we'd go to the bar to get our drinks, only to get dirty looks from the waitress later. Well, sorry honey.... you snooze ya lose.
The second reason for stealing the 5th star is the food. It is inexcusably bad. Like it's not even bar food bad, it's just bad. I've gotten sick from it. Seriously. If you're hungry, ask them for a bag of chips and you might be OK. If you're hungry, go to Tommy O'Doyle's for some pub fare around the corner. After that, come to Flat Top's for good music, good beer, and very reasonable drink and pool price on good quality tables.
This use to be my chill spot when I lived in Cambridge. There's usually a good crowd and the drinks are decent. Don't ask for a Long Island; they can't serve drinks with more than 2 or 3 liquors in it. Free pool Wednesday nights.
One time I showed up and it was Goth night. The rock was blasting and a lot of people dressed in black and leather; that was interesting.
I wouldn't get lunch or dinner here; stick with the Nachos and drinks.
I like Flattop's. But, the only night I ever go is Sunday--its really quiet, there's plenty of tables, and getting the bartender's attention is easy. Plus, it helps that's the night the seasonal Dead Pool goes on, and we always have a good, relaxing yet really fun time.
The patio is really nice to sit out at during the summer, and you can take your drink out with you which is extra nice. The food isn't bad at all, but its definitely pub food.
All in all, I'm a fan :) I like the friendly staff and I have many pleasant memories of Sunday evenings spent here.
This is the cheapest place in town that I know of to play pool. It really makes me hesitant to play anywhere else. Beer is standard to expensive and I've never had the food.
I'm a casual (read: terrible) pool player, but don't have enough shame to hide my (lack of) skill. So when the 7:45 movie at nearby Kendall Square Cinema was sold out and someone suggested, "Let's get tickets to the 9:50 and go shoot some pool," I had no objections.
Flat Top Johnny's was reasonably crowded for a Friday night, but the wait for a table only ended up being 15 minutes. Be sure to bring your cell phone - there aren't any pagers, so if you want to wander more than 5 feet from the hostess table, you'll need to give her your cell phone. Three parties before us missed out on their tables because the hostess couldn't find them.
We spent out 15 minute wait at the bar, which turned out to be a waste of time. Before we'd even finished sitting down, there was a bartender in our face asking, "You gonna order anything???" We asked for menus - he tossed one on the bar in front of us (there were six of us) and disappeared. He never came back to our end of the bar to take our order, in spite of our attempts to flag him down. We ended up taking our pool table without food or drink in hand.
Fortunately the waitress working the pool tables was much more on top of things. We ordered and were quickly served a variety of foods and drinks: Grey Goose martini, beer, salad, buffalo wings, and chocolate cake. As far as the drinks were concerned, the martini was generous and the beer was cold. We probably should have stuck with bar food, thought - the wings were good, but the salad was brown and wilted and the chocolate cake was a Hostess cake stuck in a microwave and covered with Rediwhip. But what do you expect for a pool hall?
All told, it was a good value and a good way to pass a few hours. Johnny's isn't a destination I'd ever set out for, but if I find myself waiting for another movie, I'll definitely swing in for a drink and a game.
I am a math geek. I dug physics in school. and yet I SUCK at pool. I actively avoid playing it as much as possible, but somehow I love pool halls.
and this place is sorta a pool hall - it also is a sports pub circa late 90s (before the law that every square inch of wall much be covered by plasma/LCD kicked in).
the food is decent, the crowd is cool, the bartenders good. it's dark and casual - until you have to pee and are forced into the flourescent lighting of the office building this place is actually carved out of
Free pool after 9 PM on Wednesdays.
Half price pool for ladies after 9 PM (always?).
Sorry ftj - your boneless buffalo wings are no longer the best.
It was pretty busy last night (Saturday), so that was a nice surprise.
People were ordering the Yucca and Linguicia left and right, but in general, the food still sucks. Bad.
Tequila is quite an upper.

Really? Not a pool hall? Okay, maybe a pool room. Either way, this place has 8 or so pool tables… Read more »
Food is not good, that keeps it from 4 stars. In a party of 10-12 people, no one liked their food (my chili was the best of the bunch) - lots of draft beer choices, very quiet on a Sunday which is good imo. Pool is relatively cheap and we were able to get a table easily. Atmosphere was good. Waitstaff quasi attentive. Its ok, not great, but ok.
I hoped to like this place. A lot. I have gone there several times, hoping my experience will be good and I'll like this place because it has everything working for it. But it's barely mediocre. There's nothing special about this place regardless of the good location, good beer selection (although I don't agree w/ the price) and pool tables (that's why the 3 stars). It's not the first place I look to go to in Cambridge esp. there's CBC and Tommy Doyle's just right around the corner. it's good for big groups to hang out. I have eaten here once, and that was enough. It's not recommended.
I have been going to Flat Top Johnnys several times a week for the past few months. I usually go right before they close and just play pinball for a while. Here's what I like about FTJs:
1. Wheel Of Fortune Pinball Machine
2. Great Beers (both on tap and in bottles. They have a really good selection of tasty microbrews)
3. The pinball machine.
4. Cool, nice bartenders.
5. Not too crowded.
6. Pinball (did I already mention that?)
Maybe most people would rather go to a place where there is more than two other people there... but I quite like the sparse crowd. I think this is a great spot.
Well - lets' just say that the people who work here need lessons in geography and tact.
When I called to find out where they were, the girl informed me that they were across the street from the Marriott. um, no you aren't! So I had to call again. She said they were diagonally to the left of the Marriott. Nope - wrong again. Called a third time & she repeated the diagonally left comment, saying that they were next to a brewing company. Didn't give a name or anything. I finally had to stop someone on the street & ask where the hell this place was.
We miraculously got there & decided to have dinner. My friends ordered burgers and wanted them medium rare. The waitress informed us that it was not possible because the burgers are cooked, then frozen, and the reheated. YUM. Asked for blue cheese, got American, you get the idea.
Was too unimpressed to play pool & there were so many dinks flirting with the dumb girl who gave us the wrong table that we weren't even informed that a table opened up. She finally came over & asked if we still wanted to play when she gave us our check...yeah no.
I'll go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when the place is calmer.
The music was great & the place looked awesome but it was a no go for me & my friends :(
This is a good place to come and waste half of your paycheck away on a Friday night. You arrive with the expectation of meeting new people or entering with your own posse and playing pool with them, watching the game at the bar with subtitles (haha) while guzzling cheap pitchers of Sam Adams Seasonal, or if you're not feeling social, then strap yourself into the drivers seat of the Atari Road Racing game, making drinking and driving a death-proof activity.
This place is bumpin', from the mid 90's alternative rock music I used to rock in grade school to my cue stick careening with a neighboring pool player's ass. My entourage came to dehydrate and knock some balls around. While awaiting our drinks, my friends and I were entranced by the carpet resembling the hotel Hunter S. Thompson stayed at in his flick; "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
Although we had fun, and the drinks were strong I do feel that the hourly rate for pool is astronomical. It's more fun than the annoying college student magnets and wallet rapings that occur at Jillians and other Fenway joints.
Site of last night's battle to see who in my office is most incompetent at biliards (i put in a good (bad) showing, of course), Flat Top Johnny's is a merely adequate place to play pool, in that it has tables, cues, and balls. Similar, in a regard to myself and my somewhat drunk coworkers, in that we are merely adequate players, capable of striking a ball with another ball driven by a stick. Sometimes.
Space around the tables is tight, particularly near the wall with the ledge. They have beer from CBC on tap, which is good; having just come from there, though, i opted for a Harpoon, which was flat.
If you're really keen on playing pool, better facilities will certainly be worth the trip; if you're in the neighborhood, well, it'll work.
Toni L. is right, it does seem like less of a pool hall and more of a bar that happens to have pool tables -- but that's sort of to be expected when you have that many corporate captives being unleashed back into the wild at the exact same time every friday. It's bound to become a bar with pool tables instead of a pool hall with a bar.
The food is OK and the waitresses and bartenders are really nice -- which is suprising based on the amount of crap they take from customers. I'm always embarrassed on behalf of the human race everytime I go in there and witness the way people treat employees. I find myself constantly apologizing for other people's behavior. But then, that's just cambridge I guess.
I don't necessarily believe this place should be considered a "Pool Hall." Bar/Restaurant is more like it.
On a random Thursday night, a friend and I decided to grab dinner and some beers at Flat Top's. We sat ourselves, grabbed our own menus, and the waitress took our order. The food is very affordable (averaging about $6 for a sandwich and side)... and the staff was friendly, but slow as snails. The drinks took forever to arrive, yet our meal came out like 5 minutes after we began our appetizer.
Here's the worst part, and the reason this is just a two star review:
While we were eating, a server was spraying all sorts of windex all over the tables surrounding us... so much in fact that it mixed with the flavor of my food.
This place has a great atmosphere and good music, along with numerous pool tables and decent bar food which features a few original dishes that I had never had before including one which had cassava with some spicy sausage. It was actually really good.
The bar is very well stocked and their bar tenders know how to make pretty good drinks which can be rare sometimes in Boston.
The place is hip, can be busy at times and is a lot of fun, with a group of friends or with just a couple.
I don't understand how this place was ever in the running for "Best Pool Hall in Boston." It either doesn't speak well for Boston or the editors Boston Magazine. I suspect the later.
There are many full-sized tables and the felt and cues are in decent condition. I've noticed warping on several visits though. Not too bad, but noticeable at times. I wouldn't nitpick something like that except for a place being sold as "the Best."
Johnny's is often crowded with their many themed nights and after work parties, which is good in my book, but it can take a bit to get a table. Unfortunately, the food and the bartenders don't do much to mitigate.
The chicken tenders (my go-to bar food) were inedibley gross. Nachos were a little better. The salsa is from a can, and so is the guacamole, if that's your thing. It got me through the night, but I was not enticed to explore further.
The beer and booze selection is typical. Nothing special. Mixed drinks are fine, but don't dare ask for a double twice. They'll kick you out. Happened to a friend of mine who'd been going for a while. I guess there's rules to dis sh*t.
By far the worst aspect of this place is the staff. They seem more interested in surliness than service. Waitresses come around ever so often. I've definitely gone 45 mins without seeing mine. The bar is much worse. They will straight up ignore you, given any pretense.
I've been to much bigger and much better places than this. Flat Top Johnny's, why the attitude? You're a small fish in a big pond. I recommend King's for bowling and pool in the Back Bay. Still MIT adjacent, and a much much cooler atmosphere.
I'll still shoot pool here, but it's not the best.
this used to be one of my favouritest places to hang out, but after encountering some very rude service, i refuse to go back here.
my boyfriend went up to the bar and ordered three Irish Car Bombs, which the bartender willingly sold to him. the friend brought back the drinks to our pool table area, and as we were about to drop the shot in, a male waitstaff rushed over and told us to not drop the shot glasses in, as doing so is not permitted, and asked us to pour our shot in. no further explanations were given as to why this was not permitted, but we complied.
about ten minutes later, our female waitress approached me and said "I heard that you guys got in trouble." when i shrugged and didn't respond, she added, "the next time you guys do that, we're going to kick you out," and walked off from our table. wtf?! why did the bartender even sell the drinks if they weren't allowed? surely he's not so daft that he doesn't know what we would do with shots of baileys and pints of guinness.
i wrote the establishment's owner and got an apology and was asked to come back for some free pool time, but 1) how can i just walk up to the counter and demand free pool time for previously shiteous service, and 2) i just didn't want to go back after being threatened to be kicked out, when we were not being rowdy nor intoxicated.
A decent pool hall in Kendall Sq. Cheap PBRs and a mixed crowd. Not the best location though, even being close to Kendall.
Tables were just ok. A bit slow and ours was obviously a little slanted. Never had the food, but seemed like a decent selection of beers and plenty of TVs to catch up on sports.
Good Tables, Solid Bar, Not Too Crowded
Flat Top Johnny's is a great place to go shoot some pool right here near MIT. The tables are well maintained and well spaced, and even on weekend nights it's not impossible to get a table within a half hour or so. It's definitely a pretty friendly place in terms of pool, with a wide variation in skill level whenever I've been there.
The beer selection is pretty decent, featuring a lot of beers from Cambridge Brewing Company if you're into that. Overall, a fun and relaxed place to shoot some pool right in Kendall Square.
Stick to playing pool and beers for this place. If you're just looking for some place to hang out with friends after work, this is fantastic. But as soon as you start craving a bite to eat, its all down hill from there. We grabbed a table to kill some time before a pool table opened up, and we started eyeing what we presumed to be yummy bar food. How can anyone mess up nachos, quesadillas or chicken fingers? Well apparently its possible.
Needless to say I left there as hungry as I came, but I had a great time with my friends and my pool game drastically improved. Which isn't saying much because I was having trouble making contact with the ball to begin with.
added bonus: the kitchen staff was making cookies for themselves at the end of the night. we had the table closest to the kitchen so we were sniffing around so much that they brought us a plate of the rich buttery goodness- on the house :-)
Awkward lesbian couples. People who have clearly never been to a real pool hall. EF employees who still desperately want to think they're hip and/or with "it" (or any once-hipster, now 9-5 corporate cheezeball who still has faith in their coolness, which is waning as fast as their hairline). And one dude who sat diagonal from me and wouldn't stop scratching his "junk". This seems to make up much of the clientele at Flat Top Johnny's.
Not that this is a bad thing. In fact, these are very likely the type of people who want a pool hall that feels safe, friendly, and inclusive. And I include myself in that very broad category.
I didn't play any pool when I came in, but the facilities appeared well maintained. I came in for dinner, the place was full but not crowded, and we quickly got a seat. I ordered a quesadilla and a Caesar salad, both of which were very tasty. I came in again the next night and ordered a burger, which was pretty lackluster. Bun was cold, cheese wasn't really melted. Offering chips seems like a lame cover for not having a deep fryer.
However, I give this place 4 stars because the food and environment the first night was very good, I could see myself playing pool there at some point, and when I came in the second night, I was able to do exactly what I wanted--grab a table, order dinner and a few beers, and be left alone while I read Venus in Furs, a kinda boring, fairly weird novel about masochism in the late 19th century. I like a place where I can hang out and get my shiz done without interruption.
*Quesadilla Review* I eat a lot of quesadillas, so I think they need their own review. This quesadilla was an 7.5. Maybe an 8. It was made of very shredded chicken. I liked this though, because it allowed the meat to be evenly spread throughout the quesadilla (instead of in diced chicken chunks). It was even a bit spicy, which I appreciated because many are very bland. However, spicy is not necessarily flavorful. The platter came with sour cream, guacamole, and salsa, which are staples I hate to pay extra for. Would eat again.
The attraction for me? The bartenders use the words "Cocksucker" and "Cunt" right in front of you without thinking twice about it. I love it!!!
Their veggie burgers suck, and the main reason to go here is for reasons I don't normally go to bars for (pool tables, bars, sports on t.v). Nowhere I would willingly head if I weren't just killing time.
Decent spot.. Went on a Sunday night, place was empty which was nice.. Staff was nice enough-my only complaint was the music the bartender had blaring-holy shit I felt like I was in the suburbs in some lonely/angry white teenagers basement.. The music made limp bizkit sound good-it was that kinda stuff-horrible rock with corny raps on it.. Get a jukebox or somebody with some taste in music. I'd debate on going back just cuz of the music.
Technically, I don't like this place. I always feel ignored by the wait staff, the crowd is a mixture of "MIT kids trying to get 'off campus'" and "the tragically hip," and there's really nothing creative about the food, drinks, or decor.
Fortunately for Johnny's, it's right next to Kendall Cinemas and the red line, so it's perfect for an after movie game or three. Not worth the trip by itself, but a reasonable tie-in.
Hmmmm......
I tht burgers are invincible.... unable to be messed up.... well I was wrong.... dead wrong.... and WTF !? No fries but chips !? Initially I thought the barkeep was a Brit when he said "Chips...."
Does have a decent beer selection....
Crowd not bad but some company not preferred....
Maybe I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but going into this place made me feel like I was walking back into 1990. Very strange.
It's not really my scene, but I can see this being an ideal place if you're looking to play pool somewhere with ample tables, drinks and food. I probably wouldn't go back just because the music, general atmosphere etc. really wasn't very "me", but everyone else there seemed to be enjoying themselves, hence the relatively neutral review.
I'm tempted to drop it down another star just because the service is so scatterbrained. I don't really understand the layout - part bar, part pool section, and a corner of... coffeehouse? Well, my friend and I sat there for so long as staff walked past and around us attending to other people that we probably could have chilled there for an hour or more unnoticed. In fact, when we walked out a while later, nobody even noticed. I know, we should have just gone up to the bar, or maybe we were just unappealing? Haha..
I know, I'm terrible for writing a review for just sitting in a place for a while and not actually trying the food/drinks/etc., so you can dismiss me as a half-review if you wish, but I probably wouldn't go back unless I was really in the mood to play pool. Glad everyone else likes it though!
Eh.
The food is acceptable as bar food but not remotely exciting. The service is spotty; I've had many a server forget the beers that I'd ordered. The music varies and depends on whoever's iPod is playing.
But the pool tables are good, and the beer works, and that's why I go there. It's cheaper and more convenient for me than Boston Billiards or Big City.
We just happened to stumble upon this after a dinner at the CBC, and we had a great time!
Literally no wait for a pool table, we had a waitress check in on us for drinks every so often. Sam Summer was 4.50 and Miller Chill was 3.50.. Not sure about the other drinks.
They also have a dart board and two or three arcade games.
Music was decent, they had several tvs so we could watch the sox game.. and it was only 12 dollars for an hour of pool.
Overall, pretty fun and go back the next time I want to sharpen up my pool skills.
With all of your options for entertainment, you pretty much cant go wrong here! The bar features 12 full size pool tables--hard to come by in Boston--the land of teeny, tiny, itty, bitty bars. There are two darts boards, three arcade machines, and a bunch of TVs for watching sports, they have a little more than the usual beer selection, and the food is what you would expect to find in a sports bar. Prices on food and drink are fair, but in my opinion the pool is a bit steep--but watch out of special nights where they have free pool after 10 or discounted rates. The games are by the hour, so if you really suck plan to fork it over when the night is done.
The crowed here can be an interesting bunch, you will always get your fill of eccentric MIT folks, and pool shark want to bes from all over the area. The manager, Davey, is cute and very accomodating for any issues that may come.
I've only gone once so far and I will definitely go back and probably update this review...
I totally agree that having darts (and not with tables in front of the boards... cough cough, Spirit) is a huge plus and needs to be copied by more bars.
So I went on a Wednesday in February at 11pm for the free pool. It was free pool, so I can't really complain. Very nice tables, too. And there aren't many pool hall options on this side of the river.
But I do have a couple nit picky points... first, they were playing a Rage Against the Machine album and it started to grate after a while. I like them, but not easy to listen to song after song. Also, I thought the tables were a little close together. Seemed closer than Boston Billiards or Big City in Brighton, for example. I was bumping into or waiting for my table neighbors a lot. But anyway, these are minor issues.
It's a cool space and I definitely plan to go back on a more crowded night. I also plan to continue taking advantage of their Wednesday night free pool special.
EDIT:
I've been back a few more times for Wednesday free pool and my friend and I are starting to make it a weekly thing. The service is very good and one of the servers remembered my friend's drink choice after he had only been once before, two weeks earlier. Very impressive!
On a Saturday night recently, it was surprisingly not packed. All the tables were taken, but the bar area was still pretty sparse, though it was continuing to get more crowded when we left at 11pm. There was a pretty young crowd there, as well. I think it was due to no bouncer at the door and the fact that they serve pitchers, if you know what I'm getting at.
I went to Flat Top Johnny's last night for the first time. I was definitely impressed, they played Talib Kweli!! Any place that has Talib pumping through the speakers is top notch in my book.
All in all, good music, a funky crowd, reasonably priced pool and drinks. I will become a return customer no doubt.
solid place. tables could be better, but at least plenty of full size ones. if you like to play, not a bad place to kill a few hours, and have a good time.
prices are average.
I generally liked this place, but it didn't seem much like a pool hall to me. Maybe it's more of a bar that just happens to have pool tables, darts, video games, and pinball. Actually, the bar wasn't even that great either (the bartenders take their sweet time with no qualms about it at all). So why did I like it so much? First off, I'm not a professional pool player by any means so the atmosphere wasn't intimidating. Also, and I'm not a super heavy drinker and don't care if I'm just sipping one or two beers over an entire night. Finally, the music is great here, but it is definitely not "pool hall" music. Think Massive Attack and you'll get what I mean. Anyway, Flat Top Johnny's is a pool hall for those who probably don't play pool all that much.
Johnny's has good full-size tables re-felted in the not-to-distant past. I seem to recall at least one beer from CBC on tap which made the night more enjoyable. If you're there to play pool, avoid the busy weekend nights and the near-bar area. It was hard to keep people from interrupting the game and I barely managed to survive a collision with the wait staff who were way overworked. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty but not exciting (or maybe the beer had overcome me at this point). Definitely the best place to go in the area to get a decent table that I've found.
There are very few places in Cambridge that would consider it "cool" to play Puddle of Mudd. FTJ's is one such place.
This is a great place for bottom of the barrel singles, recently marrieds who realized they made a mistake and just about anyone who doesn't know there are SO many better places to go in Cambridge.
If you're not playing pool on the spacious tables (the one good thing here) with some ear plugs in to block out the bad music, why are you here?

And the response from the owner
-------
You know Colin, you seem like a pretty active guy, and I see that you are an entrepreneur as well. As a person who may or may not own a business, realize that the folks you review are real people. Flat Top's has been in business for 15 years. We may not be part of the "cool" that you seem to know so very much about. But, know that we are as much if not more a part of Cambridge than you would give us credit for. What made you think that the song you took so much offense to was played to be cool? Might it have been played simply because the person choosing the music liked it? By all means, review us, we love reviews. But, in your rush to be funny or erudite, please don't trash a place that is locally owned and operated, and has seen more years, and people through it's doors than most places here in Cambridge. The B-side that you love so much...? Rob helped me open Flat Top Johnny's and Pat (the owner) worked for me. I hope some day when your business is judged, that your entire body of work is treated fairly by those who voice their opinion. In any event, thank you for trying us out. And feel free to write me back if you have some constructive criticism with Flat Top's. I would be more than willing to listen. I am a good listener, 15 years in business, and counting, requires that I be.

If you don't mind waiting a LONG time to get a pool table then Flat Top Johnny's is the place to go. While you wait you can sip on some $2 bottles of beer (they stock beer from the Cambridge Brewing Company - next door). The music is good. They have DARTS too! (There aren't enough bars in this city that have darts....) Atmosphere is very casual and cozy.
Bonus: Free pool after 11pm on Wednesdays. And, my favorite: 1/2 price pool for the ladies on Tuesday nights!
