I absolutely loved working with Flat Rate Movers!  These guys are great!  We have moved five times in the last four years, and used other movers in the past.  Starving Students ripped us off and broke a few items we cared a lot about, some other local movers in the bay area took care of the other three moves, but bitched about it the entire time.

When it came to moving from San Francisco to L.A., this time, we did our homework.  Flat Rate really does deliver what they promise.  Jake came and did our in-home estimate, we agreed on the price and that's exactly what we ended up paying.  I have to admit- we had a bit more than was on the sheet, but the movers didn't complain- the price was the price and that was it.

Not only did they bring all the stuff to wrap everything- there wasn't an extra charge for blankets, boxes, etc.   They even took our clothing out of the closets and packed & Unpacked it at the new place!  How awesome is that?!

They work quickly and efficiently, each guy introduced himself with a smile and a hand shake and they didn't complain at all.

We were probably a big pain in their behinds, since the place we were moving to wasn't ready when it was supposed to be.  They were so sweet, and held our delivery for three extra days.   They didn't unload the truck, they just let it wait for us to be ready... and they could not have been nicer about the whole thing.

When it came time to unload our truck full of stuff- the delivery guys were incredible!   It took less than 4 hours for them to unpack an entire truck, including stairs and a bit of a walk to our front door- not to mention our three levels INSIDE the place as well.

They worked their butts off and we were amazed and grateful!   They even helped us move things around after we changed our minds where we wanted them, and did it with a smile!

IF you're looking to move, whether it's five minutes away or cross country, these guys are fabulous.   It's not just about the money, because a lot of movers will end up charging you more than they estimate (we have had other movers add over $1000 to the total price come delivery time) ... Flat Rate is fair, honest, friendly, efficient and quick.  They don't waste time, and they are always pleasant- even when you call 20 times to change the pick up & delivery dates.

We were a nightmare customer for them, I'm sure, but they made us feel like we were super easy to work with and they were grateful for our business.

If you want a professional, reasonable move and have faith your belongings will 1. arrive and 2. arrive in tact, call Flat Rate for an estimate.  They really are the best around, and I'm sure you won't be sorry.

Thanks Flat Rate- you guys are awesome!

BEWARE of Flat Rate Movers if moving cross-country!

Though I was impressed with the speed, efficiency, and care of the moving crew itself, I am overall disappointed with my moving experience with flat rate.  We were mislead to believe that our shipment would arrive within 7 to 14 days of our move date by our sales representative, though it was written into the contract that in fact Flat Rate would not be obligated to deliver our shipment until 7 to 14 days from the earliest date that we indicated were able to receive it.  This meant that our belongings sat in LA for a week as we drove cross country, and had not even been scheduled to leave LA until days after we arrived in Philadelphia.  We still have not received our shipment and thus our move is not yet complete.

This was a huge factor for us in choosing a moving company.  I do not feel Flat Rate did an adequate job explaining this policy, or keeping us informed regarding their timeline for delivering our shipment.

I wanted to write an update on what happened when I went to pick up half the coffee table that was delivered.  Overall the customer service was very apologetic and respectful.  I know that mistakes happen and I was ok with that.  They offered a discount on my next move if I used them + $100 off the current, which was nice.

On my out the women in charge of claims says "I though we were not going to give a discount unless he changed his review on Yelp."  I was shocked...  I dont know how other people would react but I said that I didnt care about the discount told her she was basically bribing me to write a good review for her.  I am a pretty calm person, but I really reacted to that because it calls into question the good reviews they have.  There are definitely fake reviews here.

Things they could do to improve are 1. pay the movers more and increase the number so they dont go so fast and things break.  2. Improve the claims department (you basically have to get insurance and add that to their their flat rate) 3. Better planning and communication on when your stuff is going to be delivered and picked up.

With that being said.  I do believe they have the potential to be a good company and are trying very hard to be one.  I think it would be worth it to give them a try on a short across town move.  I would not recommend letting them put your stuff in a warehouse.  Finally be aware that many of the 5 stars here are fake so who know what the norm is.

FLATRATE Movers came through for us when we needed a fast, quality moving project done on a very short notice.  Even though our company is based out of state,  they listened to our needs and took wonderful care of us.   Sony, Alex and everyone we talked to at FLATRATE were very helpful and helped us deliver our products in a timely manner and our client was very pleased. Great customer service,  honest and  dependable. Thanks so much, Juls

I have served with the military for over 20 years -- It required me to contract with a moving company about every three years. This was by far my best experience--compared to previous moving experiences 1) When unpacking, the movers "put things away" in a nice orderly fashion. Other movers just dumped things and set them on the floor. 2) I went to organize my kitchen after the movers left just to find that the movers had already completed my kitchen and put everything away in good, logical places. The kitchen was already completed! 3) On several occasions, I had to request to move the same item more than once--from one room to another room after changing my mind. Movers I have experienced in the past would complain about this .... But the Flat Rate movers appeared happy to do the extra work without complaining. 4) I could see a lot of a vigilant care with regards to not making any marks on my walls as furniture was moved. Thanks to the moving crew (Boris, Roberto, Erick, Alfonso)

The guys were great!  They were on time, reliable, safe, accommodating and very nice.  They worked so fast, it was all done before we knew it.

One thing to be aware of with the flat rate- before moving day, a sales person will come to the place that you're moving out of and make a list of everything that goes and from this, they give you a price.  Check this list carefully so that there is no change in price once the movers come.  It works out well if you know to do this.

The movers had excellent timing for getting everything packed and loaded from the old place into the truck. Unfortunately, they were not careful and caused many black marks from the dolly, I presume, on the walls in the bedroom when moving the furniture out.

They wrapped everything in blankets but they did not wrap the dining room table legs and two of them were damaged during the move. A representative called me to see how the move was going mid-way through and I mentioned the table to him. He talked to the foreman on the job and then I told him that I would need to contact Crate & Barrel to find out what they recommend to fix the table legs and then I would contact him again.

I was thankful that my most valuable items, the office furniture, master bedroom furniture and living room, made it with out being damaged.

After they had finished unpacking and had left, I was moving one of my paintings to the correct room I was going to hang it in and I noticed that it was damaged too! It is a fairly large (3'x5') painting and it was not as carefully packed as other items. In the center of the painting there are two crease marks where pressure was applied to the painting. This is not easily repairable as the painting was purchased in Bali during a vacation. I do not know how to resolve this one. I will bring it up when I find out about the table legs and call William back.

I do like the fact that everything is wrapped in blankets for moving, however, there needs to be a strictly tape side of the blanket and a furniture side. Again, after they left and I was wiping off the furniture I noticed several sticky spots on a handful of items that was obviously tape residue from the side of the blanket that was in contact with the furniture.

Overall I was content with the movers. They were fast but I would have sacrificed speed for more caution next time.

I paid $1000 and they finished the move in about six and a half hours. I was moving just 2 miles from the old to new place. There were four movers and I was going to tip them $40 each if they had done an awesome job. After seeing the damage to the bedroom walls at the old place and the damage to the table, I reduced it to $30 each.

Hopefully an amicable resolution will be made with me by company regarding the damaged items.

I would recommend them to friends with the contingency that they carefully watch them pack all items before taking them to the truck and then relaying the importance of not rushing to the extent of marking the walls.

I agree with a previous reviewer that their glowing reviews are suspicious, considering that FlatRate Moving is a Yelp Sponsor.

I helped my best friend deal with her move, which wasn't a big deal. They only had a few large pieces of furniture as they were moving all the little things themselves to an apartment that was maybe a mile away.

Prior to the moving day, they  kept sending e-mail confirmations which seemed to be a promising sign. We were quoted that the movers would show up anytime between 1 -4 p.m., with the representative stating it would likely be closer to 4 p.m. It was a bit stressful that they just showed up at around 1:30 without a courtesy call to let us know they were going to be here more on the early side.

The actual truck guys were not confidence-aspiring. For movers, they had a really laissez-faire attitude and only spoke to each other. Still, you don't need to be best friends with your movers, right? You just need them to move your stuff.

They got to the new apartment and were complaining about the stairs, even though they company had been warned in detail about the stairs. It made the situation uncomfortable.

The biggest issue is that they moved the fridge and somehow screwed it up, because immediately after it stopped working and my friend had to shell out $200 to get it fixed. She e-mailed the company and acknowledged that she didn't expect a refund since she didn't purchase the moving insurance, but she still wanted to note her disappointment. No answer from these guys, even after sending a follow-up e-mail. A simple "We're sorry you were disappointed" would have been the professional thing to do.

Their rates were good, but you get what you pay for. I'd stay away from FlatRate moving in the future.

My local move couldn't have been any smoother. Flat Rate was great from the beginning to the end. Their follow-up every step of the way (confirmation emails and calls) was excellent. They were on time (called in advance as well) ... the crew was friendly, efficient, and professional.

Their business concept of "Flat Rate" ... what is quoted is the final price was absolutely true. Excellent.

They shouldn't change anything. I'm a 100% satisfied customer.

Consider this...

66% of their five star reviews could be faux-yelpers (possibly employees) who are padding the rating of this business. These users have no other reviews except a glowing one for this particular mover. Suspicious, right?

In April 2009, my boyfriend and I moved cross country from Los Angeles to Seattle. We chose Flat Rate because they had the lowest quote, could meet our timeframe (1 week delivery) and all packing supplies were included. Also, my boyfriend and I were living separately at the time, and they had no problem picking up from 2 locations.

Here goes the PRO/CON list of my experience:

PROS
- All packing supplies was included with no extra charge.
- Furniture was well padded, due to their generous use of packing material (tape, boxes, blankets, etc.).
- They got to Seattle within 1 week.
- Very little items were damaged. Some furniture got scuffed, but that's to be expected.
- They both disassembled and reassembled our bedframe for us.

CONS
- Customer service did not do its due diligence and tell us we need an EXACT list of items and # of boxes. He only asked for an approximation and for "key items".
- Due to above, our original quote increased by 40% on moving day
- The contractors they hired for drop off in Seattle were completely UNPROFESSIONAL. He threw a childlike fit for 1+ hours over the fact it was raining (duh, it's Seattle dumbass!) and that the loading zone was occupied. He threatened to leave if we didn't get the loading zone cars to move (how the f*** are we supposed to move cars that aren't ours?) and then finally worked around it after speaking to his manager for 1+ hours.

I'm torn between 2 or 3 stars for this business. I guess our stuff did arrive safely at the end of the day. This does not mean the process when smoothly though.

what's up with all these fake reviews?!?!

it's disconcerting to see so many five star reviews by faceless yelpers with no other review and/ or friend. of the 40+ reviews, only two are by elites (yes, i'm an elitist). and NONE of the five star reviews mention anything about  great (or even competitive) prices they received. don't people care about good deals in this BAD economy?

anyway, i'm desperately in need of movers and i called this place for an estimate after finding them on yelp. unlike other companies that offered an hourly rate of $70 ~ $80 for a minimum of 3-4 hours, this company gave a FLAT RATE estimate of $1100+ for our moving. they said their minimum is $650.

considering that our move is literally to the building next door, and since i can't imagine moving our stuff for 12 hours, it's probably best for us to go with other companies. in fact, i don't think this company has a competitive rate when it comes to local moving, period.

i will update as to how much i "saved" by not having hired this company after our move next week.

************* UPDATE: 8-15-2009 ******************

our moving cost came out to $438 by going with a different company (will review soon). even though it wasn't the most pleasant moving experience ever (to say the least), we did save a LOT by NOT hiring flat rate movers.  :)

I've moved 10 times in the past 14 years, and Flat Rate Moving was by far the best moving companies I've ever used.  They are a little pricier than a lot of other companies, but this is an area where I think it's worth it.

The woman I spoke to on the phone, Sony, was very helpful and nice.  She went over what I was moving, room by room, got some other basic info, and told me right then what the price would be.  Period.  No matter how many movers they send, no matter how long it takes.

They sent 5 guys and I was moved from a 1-bedroom in Silver Lake to Studio City in under 3 hours.  They disassembled and reassembled furniture.  They took stuff I was tossing out to the dumpster.  They helped me corral my cat.  They actually looked at the what I'd written on the boxes and put them in the appropriate rooms.

To me the peace of mind is worth the expense, especially now that I have actual "grown up" furniture.  Plus other movers may give you a lower quote but the extras (fuel, stairs, extra men, etc) add up quickly.

Not one damaged item!  I'll definitely use them the next time I move.

I called these guys for an estimate based on their Yelp reviews and was at first very disappointed.  $775 to move me from an 1000 sq. foot loft downtown to an apartment in Hollywood?  Everything I own is small enough to be moved in three or four trips with an ordinary pickup truck.  If I knew someone who had one that is exactly what I would do.  Damn the yuppie scum I call friends!

The estimate guy was very professional and courteous, and was sweet as pie about my continously yapping dog, who was clearly upset about his presence.  These guys were so bloody professional, they had a detailed estimate and contract to me by e-mail within hours.

When I finally picked another mover , Dino's, for quoting me $500, I was truly sorry.  They did a bad job, took twice as long as they said and the final bill turned out to be $30 more than Flate Rate's.  If I had chosen Flate Rate it would have cost about the same, but I wouldn't have had to worry about how long the move was taking and how much more it was going to cost me.  I wish I had used Flat Rate.

It took me getting taken by another company to realize how much wiser a choice Flate Rate would have been.

This was the worst moving experience of my life thanks to the utter negligence, idiocy and complete apathy shown by all the employees at Flat Rate Moving.  We paid $5,000 to have our household "professionally" moved from Los Angeles to New York City, but we might as well have flushed that money straight down the toilet and taken a sledge hammer to our stuff because we would have achieved the same results as moving with Flat Rate, except we wouldn't have spent 2 months calling and emailing to try to find out if we would ever be compensated for our losses.   Flat Rate smashed our antique dining table--breaking the legs right off the table, broke an antique chair and bashed the only box I had labeled (written about 14 times) "fragile, handle with care" so that the glass and fragile contents within were all broken to some degree.   The dining room table didn't actually arrive until 5 days after our moving truck came because the movers conveniently "forgot to load it onto the truck at the warehouse."  Then the movers had the gall to complain that they wouldn't get a fair tip because of the broken and undelivered table.

But, to top it off, they ruined an irreplaceable sculpture because of their utter and blatant negligence for our belongings.  When the representative did the walk through I identified each work of art and I asked that the sculpture be given extra special care in packing because it was fragile and had an iron component that weighed 50 pounds.  I couldn't watch them pack all the art because I had to teach the "art handling professionals" how to pack all of my paintings since they were touching the faces with their bare, dirty hands and laying them face down onto the floor.  When the sculpture arrived in New York it had been thrown into a wardrobe box completely unpacked with a small table, some brooms and a mop, the 50 pound piece of iron left loose to bang around the box the entire move and obliterate the rest of the sculpture.

When we called Flat Rate we were told they would compensate us for our losses and our claim would be handled in 10 days.  Every person we spoke with pointed the finger at someone else and our calls were avoided, unreturned and the claim didn't get processed for 2 months!  The New York branch claimed they were not the same company as the Flat Rate branch in LA and, therefore, could not be blamed for our unfortunate move.  The claims representative at the LA branch made every effort to avoid and prolong our claim.  I'm convinced she doesn't actually work at Flat Rate because during the time we were working with her she was on vacation for two separate weeks and sick for another week and each time she left she failed to turn the claim over to someone else to handle in her absence so we were forced to wait until she got back to speak with anyone about it.   We called almost every branch of Flat Rate we could find a number for including the Vice President who never came through on his promise to help us with our claim.  In the end Flat Rate gave us $150 to compensate us for our losses.  The dining room table alone cost $215 to repair and will never regain its integrity as an antique.

PLEASE DO NOT EVER HIRE THESE SCAM ARTISTS TO MOVE YOU!!!!!!

Wow I'm really surprised by all of the negative reviews on here. I've used Flat Rate twice, and each time I was really happy with the service. Granted, I packed my own stuff, and each time it was a local move. So maybe that's why others had problems? Either way, both times the men were really helpful, really efficient, and took good care of my stuff. I had more items than I'd actually quoted, and they didn't have a problem moving the extras. They even stopped at my storage unit on the way to my new apartment and unloaded stuff there for me for no extra charge. I supplied them with bottles of water the whole time and they were very thankful.  So, overall, I've had 2 pleasant experiences with flat-rate movers.

FlatRate = StressFree

First Step:  The people on the phone were nice.  They helped us with our inventory list.  I was very thorough, because I didn't want any surprise charges.  First I worked with Alice, then Paul.  Not sure why my agent was switched.  Anyway...

The movers:  Israel, Alejandro and Julio were amazing!  Israel was in and out of our apartment the most, so he was the main guy explaining the process to us and assuring us everything would be ok.  (This was our first time using professional movers, so we had no idea what to expect!)  He worked his butt off, but also had a warm personality and put my mind at ease.

Conclusion:  The whole move took a few hours.  Everything was in perfect condition (well, maybe one smudge on our Ikea coffee table).  We felt FlatRate was a good value.

I chose FlatRate because my friend Amy recently hired them in New York and recommended them to me.  I will do the same; I will recommend FlatRate to everyone that I hear is moving.  Thank you, FlatRate!

Seriously, use these guys.  You will be so glad you did.  Easiest move ever!

I moved many times in my life and i rate Flatrate Movers A+. And i am not a faux-yelper. I used Flatrate Movers on 4/28/09 from Westwood to Downtown LA. 100% positive experience from the beginning to the end. Hourly-based movers normally send 3 guys or less for my move size and that is why it always ended up taking the entire day. But Flatrate sent 4 (young) guys and having 4 guys surely made the move go faster and more efficient. This move was the fastest move ever for me. I was so happy that i ended up buying the movers some drinks + food. Nice guys... The main guy i dealt with was Jose and he was very easy + nice to work with. Not sure what happened with other negative reviews, but i recommend Flatrate to EVERYONE to try.

There is some good and some bad to this company. Let me say off the bat that the people I dealt with were extraordinarily helpful and tolerant of my endless paranoia. I spoke with Stanley Rosenbaum at the main office (who I called so much that he eventually learned to recognize me from the number on caller ID), and Corey, Alex and Jaime moved me. I moved from San Francisco back to Austin, where I'm from, but dealt with this office in LA. I believe the crew was based out of Oakland but I'm not sure.

First of all, they're pretty committed to their flat rate. You can definitely find cheaper, but they were cheaper than the cross-country move I made last year from Austin to San Francisco. Stanley gave me an estimate over the phone based on the amount of furniture and boxes I had. We ended up having a slightly different inventory; more boxes but smaller and a few articles we forgot, so I was worried they would raise the price, but they didn't. I called him several times to update the inventory, which he repeatedly assured me was unnecessary, but every time he sent me a revised inventory receipt with the same price. You get a LOT in writing, they're registered with the DOT and everyone else you would expect them to be, and they have a spotless record with the BBB, which is very important to me. I still managed to be completely paranoid during this entire process, but everything turned out well. The crew was incredibly polite and professional, uniformed with a marked truck, quite thorough and careful. They outsourced the actual delivery and unloading to another company (Lion Transportation), which I believe is a common practice with smaller long-distance movers. That's where your mileage can really vary; though I'd like to think they're inclined to use companies with a good record, there's certainly nothing forcing them to. I will say that my team was very good.

The bad is, there's something about the company that raises a flag for me. As I said, I am intensely paranoid when it comes to my belongings and large amounts of money, but there were a few substantial peculiarities that still stand out after the fact.

First, up until recently, there were several obviously fraudulent 5 star reviews on Yelp, and there probably still are on Citysearch. There are a few legitimate positive reviews and no negatives, so I feel that this is deceptive and unnecessary.

Second, there's something very odd about a flat rate estimate given sight unseen, and the fact that they give this estimate based on cubic feet rather than weight is the traditional red flag with a moving company. I don't think there's anything inherently fraudulent about their method, but it's definitely uncommon. Still, I had a very good experience with them so I think it's worth giving them the benefit of the doubt.

All in all, I would definitely recommend these guys for long distance moves. We had no losses, no significant damage, and dealt with very friendly and helpful people at every moment.

Flat Rate Movers would not leave me alone! I am big on researching any kind of service I use and I contacted at least 5 or 6 moving companies in LA for my move. Most of them sent 1 email and/or called once to give me info. I decided between a couple of companies that are $75 or $80/hr for 3 men, 1 truck and everything else and if you are organized and you pack everything on your own, then you don't need a flat rate company. Flat Rate Movers quoted me $700-$1000 for a 2bd move which was WAY too much and they WOULD NOT leave me alone. I told them that my quote was too much and kindly told them I wasn't interested. They proceeded to call me around 7:30am about 4 days in a row, sent dozens of emails, and even sent me texts. This is all after I told them 3 times that I wasn't interested. I finally had to tell them that if they call, text, or email again, I was going to contact the BBB. Apparently, they have a good grade with the BBB so they must do something right. But if you don't want to pay an expensive flat rate, then don't contact them! If you are organized and pack everything and get it ready to go for the movers, then it shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 hours or so to move a 2 bd apt. Still WAY cheaper than Flat Rate Movers.

FlatRate is basically the perfect moving company if you are like me:  want to schedule online and basically never speak to a person on the phone, want to know exactly what you are spending ahead of time and want to pay with a credit card, and want professional and easy service the day of the move.

I have used FlatRate twice for local Los Angeles moves, and the movers have always been incredibly nice and helpful.  They go above and beyond to make sure everything is moved.  They even left a wardrobe box for me when my new closet was too small for all of my clothes.

I did not have time to shop around, so I have no idea if they have the best price.  The price was right for me, and the ability to schedule my move from out of town at the last minute the first time I used them was invaluable!

i was very happy using flatrate for my cross country move.  all my furniture arrived in 6 days from CA to MD.  they were professional and numbered the boxes so that you can check off each number upon arrival.  i worked with pavel who came to estimate my move, boris who packed up all my stuff, and angel who drove cross country and delivered everything to me all by himself.  they were courteous and a pleasure to work with.  i was impressed and would definitely recommend them!

I went through the process of calling about 5 different movers and ended up picking FlatRate Moving.  They did an outstanding job.  Just have an idea of what inventory you need moved, i.e. how many boxes, what type of furniture, etc, and then send them the inventory and they quote you a price.  There's no changing of the price once your stuff is on the truck, or any other gimmick.  Just as simple and painless as moving can be. The key for me is how the movers themselves were very professional, courteous, and efficient.  I'd recommend these guys and would use them again.  Oh, there are a few companies out there with a similar name.  Be sure to look at the right one:  http://www.flatrate.co...

What I learned from the moving experience with Flat Rate is ALWAYS get the extra insurance no matter who you use.  Yes, they were helpful and friendly (until you want to make a claim, then look out).  And if you don't pack every single thing yourself - keep an eye on them.  All the items I packed arrived safely.  Whatever the crew touched.  Broken.  Paintings that were supposed to be put in art boxes or at least blanket wrapped were put unprotected in the truck, which means they were unprotected at the warehouse and again on the delivery date.  So you can imagine the nicks, bumps, and scratches.  Remember they only pay you $.60 cents per pound - so my $1200.00 Artemide floor lamp which was broken in half will be compensated back to me for $30.00 and on and on.  Buyer beware!
