I recently went to flashback on a shopping whim on my day off. I moved into the area last month and I always like to check out new vintage stores nearby. Let me just say - BAD ASS STORE! I tried on about 10 dresses and I wanted about 7 of the 10! I ended up purchasing my 3 favorites. The owner is awesome, and its clear she cares about her merchandise. One of the zippers on a stunning 50s frock broke (hey, it was a 60 year old dress, stuff can't last forever), and she discounted the dress for the price of the zipper, recommended a tailor, and taught me some quick sewing tips to help with future zipper problems. I was also able to bargain the price of the other items. Here's a tip for most vintage stores - if you buy more than one item, you can negotiate the prices... Overall, I was able to get about $30 off for 3 dresses and a belt just by bargaining. Definitely going back for round 2 in the near future.

Found a great funky button down for the hubs here. 2nd favorite vintage shop we found in Austin.

Not really certain how this place is maintaining such a high average on the ratings. My experience was more a waste of my time than anything.
To start off, I should say the service was fine. I was greeted when I walked in and again when I happened to pass by the register. The gal didn't interact with me otherwise, but I felt more like she was "letting me shop" than ignoring me. So, there was the positive.
The most vintage thing about the place was the smell. I walked into the pungent odor of some grandmother's attic. It must come in a spray, because there weren't too many vintage pieces in the shop. I found multiple items with manufacturer tags on them that appeared to be current. I even found a dress with a Marshall's tag. Most of the clothing offered looked like a compilation of old garage sale leftovers Ross / Marshall's clearance rack items. The highlight for me was a cute "Izod Lacoste" skirt. It was cute, with the exception of the completely mismatched button sewn on, that drew attention to the fact that the rest of the buttons were a little askew, that led me to peek at the tag. . .some handmade something or other. On closer inspection, the alligator was in an odd spot. Oh well. It wasn't my size anyhow.
To be fair, there were quite a few sequined dresses that I didn't even really look at. I suppose those might make it worth a trip for someone. Outside of that, I felt like less than 20% of this store was worth even looking at.
I almost forgot. Pricing. It was ok. Most of the dresses seemed to average around $30. Really not bad if I didn't already feel like I was shopping Goodwill's rejects. -

I went into this place a couple of times and each time just didn't have the time to totally browse in excess but it has tons of stuff to choose from both men and women's clothing. The prices are a little high but most of it is quality. The owner bought some things from me that belonged to my grandmother from the 50's..didn't give me much but at least they'll have another life through someone. She's there on Friday's and Saturdays FYI if your selling stuff. I think the 80's are back but they have things also much older for that one unique item or a 'flashback' from your childhood you can enjoy.

This store is just stuff with vintage everything. It's a house, so all of the rooms are crammed with the finest bric-a-brac you'd find in somebody's house, if they had OCD (like they didn't throw anything away), great taste and a pension for vintage hats, shoes, clothing and accessories. Kitchen-ware, men's clothing and old records are also abundant here - which pleased my guy friend. In fact, this shop reminds me of Ahab Bowen (a vintage boutique in Dallas) big-time! Even one of the employees agreed.
I only bought a pair of flourescent yellow and clear plastic earrings from the '80s (imagine two long ice cubes stuck together) for a mere $10, but I'm definitely going back soon because 1) it's close to my house and 2) it's impossible to look at everything in one visit.Listed in: Must-stop shopping in Austin

I don't have quite the patience to sort through this stuff for hours, like my sister always craves, but when she comes to visit, we go, and she loves it. Sometimes she hits it up while I'm at work so she can go nice and slow.
She falls in love with vintage clothes, books, crazy sunglasses. I can hang for maybe an hour, and for that hour, everything is really fun and like you're peeking into someone's grandmother's basement where everything is really cute and well-kept. Tulle for under your vintage dresses, the dresses themselves, cute wallets, even drinking glasses- they really have a wide, interesting assortment. -

Super nice owner- helped my daughter try on several prom-type dresses over the course of an hour or so. She even pulled out items she'd just purchased for us. Prices were excellent and while my daughter did not find exactly what she wanted she found many, many great options. We'll be back- this place is full of great things!

After a day of vintage-clothes-hunting all over the South Congress/South 1st area, this was where I hit the jackpot. Where the other stores are too expensive, too costume-y, or too kitchsy, Flashback had a balance of all three that just...works.
Great options in style, sizing, and general atmosphere - and well priced! -

Was everyone else going to some different Flashback? Because this place is terrible!
It's so poorly lit I couldn't look though the dresses and yet again, HIDEOUS clothes.
Not a single thing I would wear.
There's a large collection but it's the same ugly stuff over and over. Not the cute 40s, but the 40s where people couldn't afford to care about fashion. The 80s where people looked like they were products of incest between twins...
Just, don't go. I guess sometime in the past four months this place has gone to shite. -

I have bought enough things here over the years that I could probably show you my Flashback collection.
I've bought western shirts here, a Dallas Morning News published the day after Kennedy was shot, a Bruce Springsteen postcard announcing the "new album Born to Run", and many other cool and unique items. All of them have been priced fairly as well.
If you're into vintage, you'll love taking a field trip to Flashback.Listed in: Born to be a consumer

I may not be the ironic hipster type who's into kitsch, but I really found this place to be quite charming. We went there to find stuff that looks like it's from the 1950's, but were unsuccessful in finding a right match. While I looked around I found some stuff that you would easily see in the fashion don'ts section of Glamour magazine. My funniest find was a formal dress that looked circa 1987. The instant I saw it, I thought it looked like something Lisa Turtle from "Saved By The Bell" would wear to a formal dance.
I wasn't too surprised when the clerk told me that Halloween is their equivalent to Black Friday. This would be a good place to go for a period costume. -

Have to agree with Ashley's review. I'm from Austin, and I've never bought a single thing (or for that matter had a good experience) in Flashback. I find their merchandise way too overpriced for what it is.
Still, if you are going for that retro-boho-hippie look combination, this will probably be one of your prime spots for goods.Comment from Brandi B. of Flashback 6/24/2009

I've been here a couple of times, but have never really stopped and took the time to make an awesome write up. So now I am. I truly love this place. Every time I walk in I found more reasons to be in love with this place. Everything from the size 5.5 (yes that is my shoe size) glittery vintage gold strap shoes, to the cute embellished grannie panties that make wearing short shorts much more fun! If there's a party or a gathering or even an appearance I have to make, I can surely find something to wear at Flashback. There is really too much to talk about as far as stuff I love at this place. But I will say this, check out the shoe section, always a good find on GoGo boots and vintage sandals and don't be afraid to spend some time there. I have found the coolest stuff taking my time to look around. I recently found a pair of fringe shorts, yes you heard me fringe shorts. These are going to be fun. Friendly staff that let's you be and is cool to chit chat with, decent parking and great atmosphere.
P.S. I have to mention that a month ago, I found a vintage Powder Blue Prada handbag. Yes a vintage Prada bag, for a steal! Mine all mine now!!!! Thank you Flashback!!! -

Whee! I love Flashback! I've bought an adorable nighty, a sweet retro purse and a classy throwback dress at this hip house. There are actually two locations now- one off of South First, and the original off of South Lamar. Check out either location for a blast to the past and find outfits your grandmother wore (when she was hip herself). Prices are reasonable for most items.

Super friendly and GREAT selection. Gave us a map of other vintage stores. Shirt was missing a button and they gave us a discount. I'll definitely be back.

Austinites - time to rally behind a(nother) struggling local business in these tough economic times. Flashback is currently in the midst of a clearance sale - according to a friendly salesgirl during my most recent visit, the store might close in the near future. Trek down to south first street and browse their wide array of lovely vintage items before it is too late.

I first found Flashback when I was looking for vintage clothing stores in and near Austin. It was the first store out of over 20 I went to, and it was the best. I have gone back several times for clothing (band shirts, vintage dresses, etc.) The service is great and very helpful. I would definitely recommend going there if you love vintage.

This is definitely one of my favorite vintage shops!!! I first fell in love with this place 2 years ago, when I was forced to pull in the parking lot after spotting a vintage house dress to DIE FOR!!! Their window displays do the trick and can definitely pull a customer in. I happen to be very fond of old slips and slinky numbers, so when I discovered that this place not only has a great selection of slips, they also take the liberty in embellishing a few to throw in some extra pizazz!! They also have a a great selection of vintage linens, aprons and kitchen ware!! Just a really cool place to find that very special piece that will complement any wardrobe!!
