8 reviews for Flame
My review is based solely on the Red Room which is located downstairs from Flame.
The specials are just amazing. Mon-Sat 4pm-6pm they offer 2 for 1 well drinks and domestics, and $3.50 burgers. Thursday nights after 9pm, I believe, they have the same deal (if not better) for the burgers, and martinis are buy one, get one. The burgers are AMAZING. I think they're the best burgers I've ever had. Ever. If these burgers are any indication of how awesome their actual steak is up in Flame, then I'd give Flame 4 stars as well!
Be warned, however, because the burger special on Thursday nights comes with fries seasoned with heaven, and the special that goes on earlier in the day comes with something different. I can't pinpoint it, but they were steak fries in a seasoning that tasted a little like curry. It was off-putting. If you pay an extra $1.50, you can get the fries to die for. I actually asked while I was there what the seasoning was, but it was just vinegar and salt. I've had vinegar and salt on fries before, but these were perfection!!
I would take 1 star off for the big steak fries that I wasn't expecting, but we ordered the other fries after realizing our mistake and it totally made up for it.
The ambiance is dark and sultry and it's just a really awesome atmosphere. Instead of all tables/chairs, they have tons of couches and love seats to lounge in. This is a perfect place to relax after a long day at work or a tough week of school.
Excellent Springfield location. My husband and I have yet to find a place like this in St. Louis that compares.
Note: My review is based on Red Room, not the Flame restaurant itself.
The best place to begin this review would be the staircase leading from Flame restaurant down into Red Room. Although Flame's decor and overall aesthetic is top-notch, walking down a winding staircase into the Red Room is a neat experience for a strictly casual diner like myself. The place is ungodly dim, but a few red lamps and a gorgeous bar allowed my eyes to adjust after several minutes. If you can deal with the initial blindness, you might enjoy the appeal of sitting in a room where almost everything is fire engine red.
While I patiently waited- for several minutes- to be asked what I'd like to drink, I took in what appeared to be a glass room full of large rocks in a corner of the room. I eventually realized that those rocks were beautiful, beautiful hunks of meat. Needless to say, getting to look at a real-life meat aging room is pretty dang cool. What a neat touch to a restaurant that specializes in steak! I also have to mention that the music selection was awesome. If you want something dance-y to listen to while you eat, this restaurant had the right idea in picking Head Automatica over Lady GaGa.
However, my experience went downhill somewhat from the pre-drink ordering stage. My comrades and I were here for a over an hour for what was a fifteen minute meal. We were not given menus, so we had to actually ask for them (I was baffled). Although the happy hour meal was an incredible deal- one excellent cheeseburger for $3.50- we ordered an appetizer of calamari but received it at the exact same time as our burgers. If I wanted calamari as a side to my burger, I'd have ordered it as a side, dangit.
Like I said, the food took a long, long time to get to us, and the place was definitely not what I'd consider busy. When it did get to us, I was so disappointed to discover that the mashed potatoes I ordered with my burger were reminescent of instant-flake mashed potatoes: definitely not thick or creamy in consistency and bland, bland, bland. The burger was great, but the calamari was more fried batter than squid. The texture of the calamari was really great, nice and chewy, but there was definite flavor missing from it. However, I got to snatch a few of their vinegar-and-salt fries, and those are hella tasty.
All in all, I was overjoyed when I got my $8.50 bill (I split the $10 calamari with one of my friends). But I've enjoyed burgers at Steak n' Shake as much as I enjoyed the one here... not that they're comparable necessarily, just that for the amount of time I waited and factoring in the other disappointments, in hindsight I probably would have been just as satisfied someplace else.
First off, this place is AMAZING!! It was voted best steaks by 417 magazine. i came here on a recent visit so see friends. They all pointed me in the right direction FO SHO!! They have an amazing Happy Hour, its as follows;
Mon-Sat 4-6 Cheeseburgers and Calamari Specials ($3.50)
Mon-Fri 4-6 2 for 1's on Select Drinks
Wed, Thurs 9-11, 4.50 House Wine and
4.75 House Martinis
Fri, Sat 10-12, 4.75 House Martini
, we also came for dinner one night
me and a friend ordered the 12 oz bone in filet... TO DIE FOR!!
we all shared the brandy mushrooms, creamed spinach, potaoe lyonnaise, they were delish with the entree... my other friends also raved about the salmon oscar and the roast chicken.,.,,, i cant wait to come back to springfield to eat these amazing entrees!!!
Flame is just that on fire. I have been going there for about a year now and business just keeps picking up. First you have the upstairs, a 4 star restaurant and steakhouse. But not like the normal steakhouse's in SW MO I mean upscale. All of there beef is aged on the premises and is exquisite. They cook there steaks at 1500 degrees, so I should probably use the word sear. The flavor is fabulous and wait staff is great. They have a smoked salmon appetizer that you have to try. For two people wine, appetizer, entree, and dessert will run anywhere from $125-$225 for a full meal, it is worth every penny.
Now if you want to relax a little more walk downstairs into the Red-Room for early and late happy hour. Food specials of hamburger and fries or calamari for $3 or quesadilla for $6. 1/2 priced drinks and comfortable seating makes it a great place to go out with friends or to unwind after a long day. At times it does get very busy and the wait staff is rushed, but it's all worth it for the decor and ambiance.
Flame is a high end steakhouse in the middle of Downtown Springfield. They specialize in steaks which are very very good. Their steaks comes with plenty of options for sides and I would have to say that their Cheddar mashed potatoes are good as well as their Salt & Pepper fries.
However -1 star for their caesar salad which was pathetic in my opinion. The "salad" consisted of 3 leaves of romaine some parmesean and a couple of croutons. The dressing was non-existent.
Another favorite for celebrations, I love to spend my birthday here. I always order the filet and lobster tail and it has always been excellent. Love the dipping sauces, the chimichurri is fabulous. Vinegar fries are great, they make a good Cosmo, great little crab cakes. Ha, I'm not a fan of sweets, but we ordered the cheesecake tree for my birthday last year. All I can say is "WOW, indulgent"!!! Hip & trendy place, lots of fun. Not cheap, this is typically $150+ for the two of us, but well worth it.
Unfortunately, I've had to edit my review and rating of Flame. We went in for my birthday dinner and everything that could be done wrong, they managed to do it. Service was horrendous. Server didn't know her wines, but flirted with my husband so blatantly that even HE picked up on it, LOL. The steaks were overcooked. The lobster tail was tough. The twiced baked potato was no better than the frozen kind I buy at Wal Mart. All this for well over $225 for the two of us. I was so irritated, I emailed the owner. Never heard back from him. They best be careful, the last meal I had at Touch wasn't memorable, they're losing their hold in the area of best restaurants and becoming very lazy and overly confident.
We usually have a group that goes down for happy hour on Thursday night. You can get an awesome huge burger and fries for under 4 bucks. That along with their drink specials, swank ambiance, and kick ass staff makes it a lot of fun. Make sure you ask for their vinegar fries and some of their home made ketchup, it great.
Flame runs a decent happy-hour special downstairs in their "red-room" for a meal sometime between 4-6. As for Brandon W.'s claim about its rampant homosexual opportunities, I can't comment except that it did seem like the four old ladies that came to the red room for a birthday party were having too good of a time....They have $3.50 burgers, that are reportedly made from the steak the night before, and $3.50 calamari baskets, which are quite nice. However, they come with gigantic (some may say phallic-shaped) sweet potato fries that I did not care for. The only problem is their drinks are $5.50 a piece, at least for Boulevards, which would give them the pretentious award for the week. I'm not quite sure that the burgers are THAT good to warrant over-priced beers. Also, its a huge pain in the ass to eat in a room that is as dark as they keep the red room, which usually means one thing: they are hiding something gross under the darkness, so tread lightly.
