Yum!
Living in Logan Square, I have a high standard for Mexican food. I stopped in here on my lunch break one day, and was pleasantly surprised.
They have a really cute space. I can see why it's often full! Food was good- I got a veggie taco, veggie quesadilla, and veggie tamale. The sauces were delightfully spicy and everything was very fresh, but the flavor didn't get me. Everything was "good" not anything stellar. I get that it's hard to get creative with tacos, but I expected a bit more bang for so much hype.
I'll be back- the tamale was worth returning, and maybe I'll branch out and try a seafood taco one of these days...Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 11/27/2011

A tiny tiny place with nice decor, but average food. My burito was bland and lacked spices. Had to use extra Tabasco sauce to bring some taste to it.
Cupcakes, on the other hand, were yummy but sugary.
I'd come back here only hangover after a good party when the taste does not really matter that much.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 2/2/2012

Flaco's, sadly, isn't my place for tacos. Or tortas. Or burritos.
I had such high hopes for this place. I'm not sure if it got hyped by reading other Yelp reviews, or just my general overagerness for any form of Mexican deliciousness. But alas, Flaco's has failed to live up to my expectations no less than three times.
The food isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination - it's just not that good either. Overall, the food is all a bit bland. It's solid if you live in the neighborhood, or if you're a college kid on a budget just looking for a decent taco to get you through your soon-to-be hangover. But there are way better places in the city for sober Mexican delights.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 12/10/2011

These is such a cute little place and it was tiny and packed, a good sign! We ordered take out , which is always a risk with Mexican, but everything was ready when promised and delicious! I can't wait to go back and eat at the restaurant and try their margaritas.

Enjoyed a decent lunch here, a veggie tamale and two grilled fish tacos. My favorite part of the meal was probably the chips and salsa- I tried the green which was "less spicy" and next time I'd probably go with the red. My friend said her chicken flautas, the daily special, were pretty good. I would have been happier with a bit heavier hand with the seasoning, maybe some fresh cilantro. The tamales, which I was really looking forward to, were a bit bland

Quick and affordable Mexican food in the South Loop, but it can be a little bland. They often overdo the tasteless iceberg lettuce on their tacos. But it's a nice place to have near work and I like their space. Also, their desserts are AMAZING. You might not think so looking at them, but they're great. I also really like their guacamole.

My boyfriend was craving a burrito so we tried Flaco's again and this time made up for the lousey first experience I had. I opted for the chicken quesadilla and finished every bite! I was surprised at how much I liked it. The salsas were also great this time around too.

OK, so the tacos at Flaco's aren't the best in the city, but Flaco's has some other redeeming qualities. It's a convenient lunch spot for me, they have outdoor seating during the summer, they sell beer and margaritas, and Mexican Coca-Cola, and they usually have a special soup (chicken pozole verde) that is absolutely amazing. I always get it in the winter, and sometimes in the summer, too. It's green and chickeny, and spicy and topped with sliced avocado. Get a pork tamale if you think you'll still be hungry after the soup.
Once again, order the CHICKEN POZOLE VERDE soup!!! You'll thank me.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 10/21/2011

Cute decor/atmosphere and conveniently located. As the prices were cheap, ordered many items to split between a group. Guac and chips were great, really flavorful guacamole, and a huge serving for the price. The pollo torta really had no flavor, mostly bread, which i ended up drowning in sauce. Tried my friend's al pastor torta, which was tasty and filling. Wanted to try a tamale, cashier raved about the tamal oaxaqueno, which again had no flavor, and I drowned in sauce. Will be great once they figure out how to season.

I've only been here once, but I was impressed. Their food is good-- I had a quesadilla. Their margarita's are great. Prices are very reasonable for the South Loop area. I also went on a Friday evening around 5:30, and it wasn't too terribly crowded. Definitely check it out!

Flaco's Tacos South (in Printer's Row) is one of our neighborhood go to places for a quick lunch or quick take out for dinner on one of those week nights after work when we don't feel like cooking. We have the added plus that it is in the neighborhood. I probably would not go out of my way to visit here, but if you are in the area it is worth stopping in. The four rating is influenced by the convenience (probably a three if it was further away from us).
Overall, the food seems more fresh than the average taco/burrito fast food or take out place. We've had the tacos, burritos, tamales, quesadillas, chips, etc. at Flaco's and have enjoyed them all. They have daily specials that come with rice and beans. We haven't sampled many of the drinks or desserts.
I thought flaco meant "thin" in Spanish. Full disclosure--I'm not any thinner after eating at Flaco's Tacos many times.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 10/16/2011

Love their tacos. I always get their steak taco, no cilantro (I know, I know but I just don't like the taste of it) and horchata. Their tamales are pretty good too.
We took our grandma here once and she really enjoyed the burrito. When it came to the table, her eyes got big and she said "WAH!!! So big!!!" (She's a tiny Chinese grandma who doesn't usually eat non-Chinese food so for her to say it was good, it means something.)
Only thing I don't like is how tiny it is. Sometimes people like to just hog up all the tables and chillax like they're at home, oblivious to the tiny crowd that forms waiting for tables. And this is why we always order take-out.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 9/12/2011

Review from Faye B.
Quick little place in South Loop that I was introduced to that has more to offer than tacos. Sure the name sounds a little cheesy, but this isn't a greasy Taco Bell style fast food type of taco. The quality of the food is definitely a little more upscale than that. The guacamole was just alright, but the chips were pretty good. I ordered fish tacos and the sauce that went with it had a bit of bite. The sauce seemed to be a cross between a chipotle mayo of some sort.
What makes this place a gem is not actually the food, but the dessert. Their cupcakes are homemade and quite delicious. Who would ever think to go to a place called Flaco's Tacos for a pretty solid red velvet cupcake? I tried the red velvet and vanilla bean and both were quite good. You have the soft creamy frosting with the moist cupcake underneath.
If nothing else, I will be back just to get a cupcake!Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 8/16/2011

I have been here a lot of times and am surprised I haven't yelped about it yet. This is a south loop gem. Its a small establishment, and have outdoor seating in the summer. Its usually crowded, but its a fast moving crowd, so you won't have to wait long to find a table.
The food has been consistently good. Whenever I get a hankering for tacos, this is the place. Chicken, veggie and fish - in that order are the best. The chips and guac are also very good. Quesadillas, tortas, tamales - I think I have pretty much tasted everything on the menu. Have never tried their margaritas so I can't really tell. It's a friendly neighborhood joint and I think has a lot of Printer's Row regulars coming here.Listed in: Around the world!, South Loop specials!

I've lived in Chicago all my life and love the Mexican food in this city. Having moved near downtown, I was excited to learn about Flaco's Tacos, a place that is supposedly similar to the authentic quick joints with a little unique nice decor flair.
Unfortunately, after having given this restaurant two tries, and having tried very different items each time, I highly recommend against coming here.
The torta is just too 'bready' - it doesn't have that magical fluffiness. There was almost zero steak in my sandwich, no chihuahua cheese that I can tell of, and the little shards of meat that were there were made from cartilage and fat and I couldn't even bite them - I literally threw out 75% of the meat, and I don't like to do that.
The chicken taco is flavorless, and they do not have any fresh pico de gallo as far as I can tell. The tres leches dessert is satisfying enough, but for 2.95, I got a portion that wasn't even enough for one person.
Overall, this place is 'affordable' but I'd be willing to pay an extra buck per item if they actually made it delicious. Like the other reviewers said, this place goes from ok, to bland, to sometimes bad, depending on what you get.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 12/10/2011

Review from Dhruv P.
I have come here a couple of times and unless I'm in mood for Mexican and stuck in Printer's row, I won't be inclined to come back.
My initial impression was taken lower from the good reviews I had received when I saw they too, as a Mexican food establishment, jumped on the Cupcake trend wagon. And nothing interesting that would highlight spices or adobo or mole, but Red Velvet and some other ubiquitous cupcakes.
As for the food, for vegetarians, Its blah food for double the cost. Horchata for $2.50? Tacos for $2.50? Mind-blowing, not even close. Its much better than Taco Bell, but at this stage, that's not saying much.
I got a taco and tamale. The taco was totally acceptable and I'll stick to that if I'm back here again. However, the tamale really didn't have too much taste unless dipped in hot sauce. NOW, the green sauce is really really good and really spicy. Wow, that's the one thing I crave there.
Another visit, I got the Mexican sandwich. They don't even call it Torta! Sigh. Well, no matter how much sauce I put it (a small container of red and green all went in the sandwich), it didn't give it any taste! I felt like I was eating bread with avocado. Stay away from the vegetarian mexican sandwich!
The food here is 3 stars. A solid 3 stars. Nothing mind bending, nothing amazing, nothing worth the trip. If you're in the hood, this is the only game in town for Mexican food. But I'm taking a star down for the prices. Either elevate the food to justify it, or knock prices down by at least 15%.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 7/10/2011

Was on our way to another restaurant in the area when I spotted this place. I'm sure it's been here for a while but I never really noticed it. The boyfriend and I decided we were down to try a new restaurant so in we went.
We ordered a chicken tamale, steak sandwich (really a torta), soup, and an iced tea. First of all, the iced tea (had a name but don't remember) was really good. It wasn't very sweet and it was so refreshing. The sandwich was nice and big. The steak was very well seasoned. The tamale I could skip next time (dry and lacking in any flavor) and the soup was really what killed the meal. I don't think I've ever had anything so salty before. I felt like I was just shaking a salt shaking onto a spoon and then putting it into my mouth. Yes, that bad. Anywho, the next time I feel like having mexican, I would go somewhere a little more authentic.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 7/10/2011

So, after much hype and anticipation, I finally visited a Flacos Tacos. I was told how great the tacos were and the margaritas were awesome!
When we walked in, it was crowded and people were standing around hovering over other patrons waiting for a seat. This had me intrigued because why else would so many people crowd into this small space. Food must be good right?
Bottom Line: Totally disappointed! The tacos were big and they were generous with the lettuce but that's where the good stuff stops! The steak was not seasoned at all! Bland and tough. So in my mind I am glad I ordered the guacamole and chips. Wrong again. It too was bland and not exciting at all. I move on to enjoy my Margarita. Jackpot! Finally I see why people love this place. The margaritas are $3 on Mondays and you can get any flavor. Can't beat it!
As I enjoyed my Margarita, I began to look around at the crowd. Nobody, I mean, nobody had food. Everyone had margaritas. Now, when consuming alcohol, especially drinks made with an over generous amount of alcohol, you need some food on your stomach so why wasn't anyone eating?????
Not sure if I will ever go back for food but Margaritas for $3 on Mondays and $4 Sangria's on Tuesdays will def get me back in the door!Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 9/8/2011

Eh. Good for the South Loop I suppose considering the vast amount of chains it seems to have.
I respect what they're doing, and fast casual Mexican food is always a nice option. The prices were standard for Mexican food and service was better than most establishments.

What is up fast food joints (non-American) restaurants located in the downtown area that never satisfies me? It's always overpriced and never authentic. Although I realize rent is directly correlated with their food prices, it's almost like a catch 22 for them, unfortunately. However, at the end of the day, I'm willing to thrown down money if the quality of the food is there. I hate settling for less.
This did not do that for me. My 3 mini burritos were embarrassing. All my toppings were served on the side (lettuce, tomatoes, rice, beans, guac, etc...). I felt like I did all the work! I swear, I'm not lazy. LOL.
The 3 tacos looked so much better as you can see from my picture. The guacamole was solid though.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 5/14/2011

Let me start by saying that I grew up in Arizona so I am very familiar with Mexican food of all types. (Note: I moved out of AZ before the state lost its collective mind) That said...
My wife and I live near Flaco's and are frequent diners. The food is consistently delicious and well prepared. The staff is quite nice and I like the fact that they have a wide open kitchen.
I would highly recommend giving the Veggie Burrito a shot. I see a number of people have been disappointed with the tacos but I wonder if they are looking for something more like Taco Bell (no offense... I am a huge fan of Taco Bell Crunchy Tacos) and less like the authentic offerings at Flaco's. The Veggie Burrito is to die for. Toss on a bit of the FANTASTIC salsa and I think you may be hooked. -
Review from Linda H.
I need to give this place another try, as this was my first time and don't like to base my review on only one visit.
Anyway, finally made it to this place last Sunday...late afternoon and it was surprisingly busy. I love the look of this place, and it's perfectly set in Printer's Row (one of my favorite little areas in the South Loop).
It was great seeing the open kitchen and how everything seems to be very clean and freshly prepared. I ordered 2 fish tacos and bf got the al pastor tacos and a steak quesadilla...also a side of guac and chips.
Service was quick and the food looked very nice. My tacos were tasty and I loved the fish, but the piece of fish on each taco was WAY small, like 1.5 inch square...two of these litte pieces of fish on each taco would have been way better. BF liked his tacos, but did say that they were a bit bland. The guac was good, but it seemed like there were some stale/chewy chips mixed in with the nice crisp ones. I had a piece of the quesadilla (which had no steak on it...more even distribution would be nice)...and it was quite greasy, like totally wet with grease on one side....tasty, but greasy.
The burrito bowls being served looked fantastic, and I think I would order this next time...and the cupcakes looked excellent...again, next time.
I'll be back! -

Hey, decent mexican food, at an affordable price. With two other friends, I was filled with only a $7 meal ($5 for pork tamale, steak taco, and splitting the cost of guacamole + chips). The atmosphere is friendly, apparently decent enough for a date, by the couples around us at 10 PM on a Tuesday.
The steak taco and tamale were pretty much standard fare as far as Mexican goes - done well. Not amazing, but not crappy. You get this standard green and red salsas, plus this mexican hot sauce if you want, which was nice.
I'd go again if I was in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't make an effort to go there unless it was convenient. A good choice if you're going to be near it (short walk from the contemporary art museum)Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 8/16/2011

Think about what goes into Mexican food. They are items you should be able to purchase for ridiculously cheap amounts, right? Right. So why am I paying $13 for three tacos with about two tablespoons of meats each (tops), a scoop of beans, a scoop of rice and a horchata for $13? Because I'm also helping to pay rent on Dearborn in the Loop.
The steak is good, the horchata comes from a machine, the rice and beans are ok, the al pastor is good but greasy and there's not much of it (see my photo).
Yes, they have margaritas, sangria and Mexican beers but honestly if I'm going to pop out for Mexican and I'm not drunk or it's not tenderloin, I better not be shelling out much more than like, ten bucks tops. Sadly, the Loop has no Mexican food so you're a captive audience but it's still a freaking shame.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 2/17/2011

My boyfriend and I stopped in here on Saturday for the first time because we were stopping by the Printer's Row Wine Shop nearby and were starving.
I had the Saturday special which was two chicken enchiladas, with salsa verde and cheese, rice and beans. With this, I ordered a can of soda and my total was just over $10. The salsa was a bit spicy for my liking, at least for something that covered the entire dish. The rice and beans were nothing special.
My boyfriend decided to go with 3 steak tacos (cilantro & onions only) and a soda, which was just under $10. He told me the steak had almost no flavor and the tacos were just too bland, overall.
After thinking for a moment, I decided to add an order of chips and guacamole for $6.60. Whoops. Definitely not worth the price. The guac had almost no flavor and could have used a lot more lime, and some salt. The chips were fried flour tortillas from what I could tell, and had soft,
greasy, chewy spots in the center of too many.
For price v. quality, we won't be returning, and if I ever go back, it will be only to try out one of their cupcakes. -

I adore Flaco's. I work and live in the South Loop and I think that it is an absolute desert of food options. For real.
So having eaten at, like, all of them, I think that Flaco's may be my fave. Why? Well, it's quality food that is quick and inexpensive. Boom. For real, you can taste that the ingredients are fresh. And reasonably priced.
I usually get two tacos ... uh ... al pastor? Is that right? It's ground beef and potatoes with a smidge of cilantro - HEAVEN. Squeeze the lime and add the green salsa! It's miraculous for so few ingredients. Add rice, beans, and a Mexican Coke and you're solid. Great lunch.
Tried the fish taco, but the cabbage had too much crunch to offset the delicate piece of fish.
I don't drink, so I haven't tried the margaritas, but my friends like 'em.
I was pondering giving them a 4 because the menu is limited ... but that's just stupid. They do what they do and they do it well. Not too much fancy fanfare, but who needs that in a taco?? If you want five courses with flaming fajitas and waiters in sombreros, don't come here. If you want fresh ingredients that are fairly priced IN the South Loop, then do Flaco's.Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 7/2/2011

Loved this place! Found it through Yelp when I was downtown Chicago for the triathlon this past August. The place is small, you can dine it or take it home. The girl who took my order knew everything menu and could recommend certain dishes to try which was helpful. We also ordered horchata, a cinnamon rice milk drink that I have never had before and it was delicious! I could drink that all day! There was a ton of different types of mexican food to choose from. I actually found this place on Yelp, so I feel like this review is like throwing a bucket of water into the ocean. But my water is usually dyed funny colors and and the ocean has been too blue lately.
Flaco's Tacos is a gem. It's a got a great interior: walls are lively, floor doesn't have any large man sized holes in them, ceiling looks stable. It's personal enough to take your time and enjoy your food, or get some work done, or read a little. It's nice enough to take someone, or someones, and eat and talk for a while. But it's also fast enough to get your food and skedaddle. I'm not sure if skedaddle translates into text well, if you didn't follow that line, just read it as get your food and go. On top of that: Online and call ahead ordering for those super on the go AND delivery. I've eaten Flaco's slowly, comfortably, savoring every bite. I've eaten Flaco's racing to class behind the wheel of a car (don't do that BTW, the burritos are too big, it's not safe)
It's a Culver's or Noodles and Company style resteraunt. Order at a register, get a number, they bring you your food. What limited interactions I've had with cashiers and servers have always been polite and friendly. I've even had them check up with me making sure everything was still OK, which is always appreciated at places that don't have actually waiters.
Ok food time. Yeah the decorations and people are important, but I'm here for the food. I got hooked on the Picadillo burrito from the first time I ordered it. I want to try and expand, I want to discover what other wonders are waiting in the other delicious dishes, but every time I get to that counter the tiny Irishman in my head says "It's beef AND potatoes, what more could you possibly ask for? Well, maybe a beer." And beer they have. And so he order a dos equis. And it was good.
But wait! There's more! We've saved the best part for last! It's time for *drumroll* DESSERT! Pick one at random. It's delicious. They're all delicious. Carrot Cake, delicious. Pie De Nuez, delicious. Cheesecake, delicious. Flan, delicious, which is weird cause I normally hate flan. Red Velvet Cake, oh my Batman the Red Velvet Cake. This cake is so sinfully, mouthwatering, jaw droppingly delicious.
Their Red Velvet Cake is so good that I'm devoting this space to it, it deserves it's own paragraph.
Also, they have daily specials. Like honest to god daily specials. Not just "today we'll put Tomatoes on your taco" but complicated dishes that are only served once a day. It pains me to not remember what they are and on what day they're served, but I'll be back soon, and when I am, I'll put them up.
Taco's are cheap and small, I eat three. Burritos are less cheap and less small, I usually almost finish one. The price comes out to about the same. I don't know why I decided to include this tidbit at the end, but if you're thinking of a taco, you should probably make it tacosComment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 2/17/2011

am mildly obsessed. heres why, in no particular order:
uno: awesome location + hours. easy to get to on public transit or foot (if youre downtown) and so far weve found parking to be a breeze (bear in mind that weve been in the neighborhood after 9 pm).
dos: the flavors are awesome. i typically order tacos al pastor (cause im stuck in a yummy, yummy rut), but ive ordered and/or tasted the chicken, fish, and steak tacos, and also the al pastor torta, and have loved them all .... you really cant go wrong.
tres: the sangria is *strong* and tasty.
cuatro: the desserts are decadent. i havent been able to bring myself to try them (i prefer my calories in the form of sangria), but my husbands ecstatic reactions have led me to believe theyre worth a mention :)
cinco: if you dine in, you may notice that they play rock in espanol. so if youre a mana or juanes or julieta venegas (etc.) fan, youll likely hear something you recognize playing in the background :)
seis: its one of the few restaurants i periodically get a hankering for :)Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 9/27/2011

Pretty authentic Mexican for Chicago. You order at the counter, and they bring it to your table. The portions were solid, and the flavors were, for the most part, spot on. They have different salsas in bottles floating around so try and score those for your table. I got the burrito and that was plenty for one person. My wife got the quesadilla, and it was probably one of the best I've ever had. They have limited outdoor seating, but it's usually occupied by smokers.

I received a BOGO free burrito coupon in the mail and told my girl we should head over to Flacos for dinner. It had been several years since I had been to Flaco's and I have to say the food is still good. I ordered the steak burrito and my friend got the veggie. We didn't eat the whole thing but I will tell you this...WE WANTED TOO!!!
The place is so cute and quaint! Its definitely a cute date spot and they serve drinks and had loads of yummy looking desserts from red velvet cake to sweet potato pie.
I cant wait to go back to dine in!!!Comment from Edmund H. of Flaco's Tacos 2/3/2011
