On a serious seafood binge lately and kept up the feast with five spice seafood and wine bar the other night.
I really liked the locale and the ambience of the restuarant. It was too dark outside for me to notice any maritime. Maybe I'll have to make earlier reservations next time.
Server was very friendly and checked on us at just the right moments.
Food was also quickly prepared and TASTY! Had the sauteed sea scallops and they were so damn butterey! Want them right now!
Also ordered some merlot and was given an extra large pour. Not mad at that. -
Review from John L.
Was just there for a christmas party. Never quite as good with a large party and a pre-set menu.
The ambiance is nice enough. The staff are friendly and helpful, but the food did take quite a while coming out. Like I said, large group.
The cheese plate was very good. The crab cakes were reportedly good, don't really do crab.
The pre-set menu had ahi tuna on it so I ordered it, much later the waitress came out reporting that the chef wasn't happy with the quality of the tuna so they substituted with mahi-mahi. I guess that's a good thing.... The dish was actually better than I expected. A little salty for my wife, but good for me. It would've tasted better with the ahi tuna though....
The salad was fresh and light. The butter brickle ice cream was good 3 stars.
Overall decent but nothing special. May try it on my own sometime.... it's in a nice location and the staff was nice. -

I have lived here in the Pacific North West only a few months and this has been by far the best seafood I have found in this state. I had prawns (5) thats were as big as my thumb. Everything my wife and I had here was amazing and we will certainly return . The restaurant is set up like a lodge complete with a beautiful view of one of the fingers of Lake Oswego. Very Nice!!!

I was very disappointed as the previous reviews seemed decent.
Food was very bland and poorly prepared.
Service was atrocious! Never felt so unwanted.
The one star was for the friendly hostess. -

Don't bother, better places in the area to go to. They lost our reservation, second time my family had this issue here (last time as well). Very rude service, so we left and had a nice dinner at another restaurant.

Great food, nice wine selection, good cocktails. Great location in summer. Last time we were there for dinner the service was really slow. Will keep going back though.

Review from Sandra W.
This is a great place to be seated on the deck on a sunny, mild evening. You just sink into these nice, cushy low oversized patio chairs and watch the happenings in the park and on Oswego Lake. For my jangled nerves, having just spent nearly the half day on I-5, this was exactly what the doctor ordered.
Service was attentive and thoughtful. I ordered an iced tea and was brought a glass of ice tea and the remainder of the bottle of The Republic of Tea Darjeeling, (The Champagne of Teas) which is, thanks to Five Spice, now on my list of "must have" teas. Nice touch to bring me that instead of a ubiquitous brewed tea.
I ordered the Mahi Mahi with rice and Hubs ordered the rack of lamb (yeah, in a seafood restaurant). The fish was cooked perfectly and accompanied by a pineapple salsa that had the perfect amount of heat, making the entire dish come alive. I tried a bite of the rack of lamb and it was also excellent, with a flavorful pan sauce.
Our palates are getting more sophisticated the longer we're in Portland -- and I think it could be a solid 4.5 stars, but not great enough to warrant 5 stars. It's decent but nothing special, except for the divine seating on the deck outside.Listed in: Once Upon a Time in Sucker…

Having had the chance to see and sample many of the new menu items, I can only say WOW! The dishes are beautiful to look at and taste even better! The scallops are out o this world! From short ribs and flatiron steak to Mahi Mahi and prawns, you can try something different every time you visit and not be disappointed.
On a side note: How many restaurants can you go to in the Portland Metro area and see the same employees today that you met two years ago? Not a lot, I assure you. In what is a very itinerant business, Five Spice must be doing something right to keep their employees happy and loyal. This continuity is reflected in the food and service. Hats off to GM Tim Mattera for running a wonderful restaurant. -

Came here with the parents for a nice dinner, and I was mostly pleased. We didn't make a reservation and it was a Saturday night, so I wasn't surprised when we were seated in the little lounge area for a bit before we were seated at a table. We were waited on for drink orders pretty quickly and, incredibly, seated at the corner table before I'd finished my first drink. In fact, the service throughout the night was excellent. Oh, and I had a mango mojito by the way, which was good, but not nearly $10 worth of good.
We ordered 2 appetizers: fried five spiced squid and fried oysters. Given our location, I probably would've chosen the oysters on the half shell and crab cakes, but...parents, you know. The fried oysters were pretty good, but not amazing. The squid though, I thought was pretty dang good. The aioli that came with it especially had a nice kick. And I love a restaurant that's not afraid of the squid legs - those are the best part.
For entrees, we got the cod, scallops, sturgeon, and mahi mahi. I tried a bit of everyone's and I have to say that I made the best choice (sturgeon!!). The cod was slightly overcooked and not too exciting, but the raviolis that came with it were delicious. The scallops were cooked perfectly and had a very nice texture, but the sauce and side dishes were boring. The mahi mahi, like the scallops, cooked well but the entire dish overall was boring. But the sturgeon. Ohhhh, the STURGEON. I would recommend that dish 10 times over I think. The fish was cooked beautifully and the sauce was tangy and really complimented the fish, the slightly chewy mushrooms (chewy in a good way!), and the wonderfully creamy risotto. They should sell the risotto by itself because I would eat bowls of that forever.
Obviously, pricier than I could afford by myself, but it certainly made a nice dinner location for the fam. I would definitely come back again for wines and smaller appetizer plates. -
Review from Peter T.
Mrs. Burgerdogboy and I have switched our weekly happy hour nite out to Tuesdays, instead of Wednesdays, as she has a crack o' dawn biz obligation every Thursday, and works entirely at home on Wednesdays. So we can be a little footloose on Tuesday nites.
We stayed close to home tonight and went to downtown Lake Oswego to hit Five Spice Seafood & Wine Bar, sit outside overlooking the lake, and have a few happy hour noshes and quaffs.
The menu is similar to many Portland happy hour offerings these days, with everything from roasted nuts, marinated olives, beet salad to grilled squid, or some various tartares, oysters, and of course a burger. Five Spice pretty much sticks to a $5 price point, for cocktails and wine, and $2- $13 for the food items from 3-6P.
Mrs. BDB had a couple of pours of the happy hour French Rose, and I went with one glass of Trumer's Pilsner. Trumer is an old label from Salzburg, which also brews in Berkeley, CA, claiming the water at the California location is nearly identical to the Austrian site. To me, beer is beer.
I opened with the marinated olives at $2, Mrs. BDB went for five on the half-shell for $6, sourced in the NW, with a vinegar peppercorn marinade, which she adored.
Next up was a trio of tartares for her, beef (grand), seared ahi (left something to be desired) and a pureed edamame with rosemary-orange oil, the latter which should have been left in the test kitchen.
For $8, I went with the cheeseburger, with hand-cut fries, the fries were great, the burger, served plain on a charred bun, was a hand-formed patty of at least a third pound, overcooked to the point of producing its own arid-like ecosystem on the plate. The sesame bun was very similar in taste and texture to the buns Foster Burger fetches from their neighbor Vietnamese bakery. As the burger was so overcooked, I really am unable to comment on the flavor of the meat. Nice pickle, tho.
Curious footnote: no salt or pepper on any table in the joint, but available upon request.
Total tab, including tip, was $46, spending for happy hour, not as bad at the tab at the Benson the other week, but service was pleasant as are the surroundings. The ambiance is modern/tech, but the air of sophistication was clouded with two televisions in the bar with sports airing on them, totally not necessary for the place or the zip code.
We finished the evening with a coffee and pastry from the St. Honore bakery, which is nestled underneath the restaurant, along the shores of the big lake they call Kitchigumee, er, Oswego. Coffee and pastries at St. Honore are over the top, as French as one might find in Western Oregon.
Will we return to Five Spice? Possibly we'll try their dinner offerings at some point. -
Review from Jen K.
A vegan, a vegetarian, a pescatarian and a celiac walk into a bar...
There are things that miss the mark at Five Spice, but I'd like to acknowledge them for some things they do very well. It seems like almost everyone I know has 'food issues.' Some of these are by choice, but many are allergies or food sensitivities that can make dining out a challenging affair.
Rather than stick rigidly to the formal menu, I've found Five Spice to be a great partner on multiple occasions in customizing a meal that is both delicious and meets various dietary needs. In particular, this has worked for friends with gluten issues that require very specific food preparation.
So I consider the menu here more of a guideline. No kids' menu, but they can make the standards (burger, chicken, grilled cheese or mac-n-cheese). On our most recent visit, we were dining with a vegetarian and noticed that there were no vegetarian entrees on the menu. No problem, our waiter just offered some suggestions based on what was fresh that day. We customized a dish on the spot combining some of the elements we saw as side dishes on the main menu. It was fabulous.
The space is beautiful and in the summer you can enjoy the wrap around covered porch overlooking the lake or have a glass of wine by the fireplace inside on a cold winter night.
When I first started coming here many years ago, I thought of this as an Asian restaurant, but no particular label or cuisine seems to strictly apply. If I had to classify them, I would lean towards high end wine bar. We had a round of cocktails and I don't think it is their strong suit. In fact, the quasimojito cocktail was downright polarizing. Even the server mentioned that you will love it or hate it.
There are things I don't particularly care for that other reviewers have duly noted. This isn't on my solid recommended list, but it is at least 3-1/2 stars.Listed in: Hey to the L-O

We got bought by the coupon! When I saw it I was thinking that it might not be bad to give this place a try again so we did. The outcome was the same.....They have a new and VERY small menu that goes along with the portion size!!! The menu was boring...simple and nothing jumps out at you. We tried the crab cakes...DON'T....you get 2 small, battered up, bland tasting cakes for $13.00 come on! My wife had the salmon and it was small but good and I had the ribeye and it was good just not very big at all! They are charging a serious premium for their wines in my opinion.
The server was great and really that was about it! The location is good and it is very clean.
Would I go back or recommend this place to someone? NO1 Previous Review: Show all »

Portland, OR
I rarely make it to Lake Oswego, as I live in Portland proper and I am literally surrounded by fantastic local restaurants. So, why drive to Lake Oswego for dinner? Well--to meet friends, of course. We met our friends here to celebrate a birthday dinner. It was simply great.
If it is summertime, I highly recommend you make dinner reservations and get a table outside on the patio with a view of the (yes, manmade) Lake O. It's so pretty with all the trees framing it up, and other lovely greenery.
The service was solid and very professional. Ambiance is what you would expect in an upscale suburban restaurant. The food was fantastic and beautifully executed, as well as artfully presented. Prices are a tad steep, but not really for the area. Drinks were good.
My friends dine here fairly often, given the limited number of really good restaurant choices in the area, and they said the menu seems to change a lot and is inconsistent--they never know what sort of dishes might actually show up on the menu--Asian inspired, or French-ish, or what. Still, everything was great, so I can't fault them for that.
If you're in Lake O., this is a fine choice--especially if you can sit outside in the golden sunshine on a lovely Portland summer eve. -

Lake Oswego, OR
We were terribly disappointed with Fivespice. We wanted to love this place, or even really like it, but it just did not live up to its' reputation. First of all, we have been there on 3 separate occasions. So, our experience was not just a bad night. The first was a dinner, which we made reservations and requested seating in the restaurant either near a window or fireplace. They had few bookings, so "it wouldn't be a problem". When we arrived, our table was in the lounge. Not off to a good start. We asked for our "real" table and they had "other larger parties coming", so, "No it couldn't happen". We still had a view table, and we just made the most of it and ordered some wine (which is an amazing list, but the prices are screamingly high. For example, a bottle of wine which retails for $40 will be priced at $130)
On to the food. All and all the dinner cuisine was good, but a bit bland. It just didn't have that Je n'ais sais Quois! Lunch was even more bland and rather lack luster. Their fish is very fresh and good, but nothing memorable.
When there are so many other options in LO, I just can't see this one luring me in for a 4th time. Great location and views. -

3.5 stars. I'm giving them 4 because the service was excellent.
Nice upstairs restaurant with a view of Lake Oswego. Comfortable chairs and intimate setting. We got seated along the window in the bar. The waitress was attentive and nice.
The food is very artfully presented. We had the trio of tartares and it was literally presented as a painter's palette. I wish I had my camera. The beef tartar was excellent. The ahi and edemame were OK. The crouton-like bread slices served with it were atrociously hard, but the waitress quickly brought soft slices for us.
The beet and crab salad, unfortunately, was over salted. I think that was just a mistake, like someone salted it once, forgot, and then salted it again. If not for that, it was a nice salad.
When we arrived and I asked for a kiddie menu for my 10-yr-old, the hostess said they didn't have one. That was weird, because on their web site I could have sworn I read that they had kiddie food. So we got seated, and there on the menu it says something about children's food being available. So the waitress rattled off about 5 things my daughter could order. That was just weird. Was the hostess new and just didn't know?
So my daughter's mac and cheese was actually substantial and she liked it. Served with grapes. Other kiddie entrees come with fruit and french fries (things like grilled cheese sandwiches and nuggets).
My scallops were absolutely delicious.
So I can't really say why I'm not a fan since overall, I liked the food (minus the salt mistake) and the service and setting were great. All I can say is, if I had guests or if I was choosing another night out with just me and my daughter, I'd likely go to another place. This was one of those "been there done that" and now that I'm done, no real rush to come back. -

Ok, so I had to check out this place and see what all the hype was about. I like to have an open mind when I try something new. But after hearing so many people say great thing about Five Spice, it was going to be easy for me to be disappointed. But i wasn't disappointed at all. I like it very much.
It has a quaint setting tucked into a nice little shopping area in Lake Oswego. The interior is comfortable. The food is good. They plate the items nicely. The portions seem a little small. I think the plating presentation hides it a little, but it is still small. The wine list is very good. It is not overpriced. The selections should please any wine drinker by the bottle or by the glass.
Overall, I am a fan. -

FiveSpice bursting with flavor inside and out
Sometimes a view and patio alone can make a place. Throw in some rocking, free-standing fireplaces to warm you up and tasty food and you got me at FiveSpice whenever I can.
This Lake Oswego hotspot specializes in pan-Asian cuisine. I went healthy and ordered the chicken cabbage salad, which was bursting with flavor. The combo of seasonings was the most unique I've had on a salad with a mix of cilantro, grapefruit, peanuts and a spicy dressing. I highly recommend it.
Tip: Reserve a table on the deck ahead of time. -

When these guys first opened I could take them or leave them. They were a little pretentious but the food was pretty good.
I believe they have changed hands in the last year or so. Every since they have become one of my favorite restaurants.
They have a very Pan-Asian-Fusion kind of seasonal menu with a few old school items that they knock out of the park like their burger.
Their crab cakes are always a perfect starter and usually come with a few different sauces that you probably haven't had before. They have a prawn and seaweed salad that I always can't seem to pass up either.
The last entrée I had was a perfectly pan-seared black cod with risotto cakes that were one of the best things I have ever eaten. The sauces and curries they make are all from scratch, unique and over the top awesome.
The servers are very professional but casual and relaxed. I have never had to wait for anything. Their happy hour is the best I have found in Lake O.
Give them a try. -

Half price bottles of wine on Sundays!!!!! Need I say more?
Ok, a little more maybe...
I adore this weather, and one of my peeves, is walking in to a restaurant when it's warm and sunny, in to a frigid dining room. Thankfully, Five Spice gets that it's patrons prefer not to FREEZE when the weather is registering triple digits outside.
I do love their outside dining area. The view is beautiful, and the free concert on Sundays is a nice bonus.
The wine list is not astronomically out of wack, and in fact it's fairly reasonable given the location.
Portions ARE small. Would be nice if they were about 20 - 30% bigger, but if you are ordering the full meal deal (apps, salad, dinner desert) it works out ok.
Happy hour here is one of my favs, but they only serve it in the bar area, not on the patio. Bummer.
Back to the patio, the only real issue for me is the lack of attention to keeping the patio clean. The railing was filthy! When we asked for a wet cloth to wipe it down, the hostess /manager looked at us like "really" and came back and wiped down the area directly in front of us. Didn't bother to clean the remaining 2 ft behind my husbands head.
Our service was good and the food excellent, but then it always is here. -

This was unfortunately the second time we tried this restaurant. These are chefs(?) that are not proud of the food they make. Our appetizers were tasteless. The crab cakes looked like they came out of the frozen food isle in the supermarket. The salad was not fresh, the dressing was tasteless! We ordered scallops which were raw on the inside & when they took them back they reserved the cut previously raw scallops now undoubtedly recooked in the microwave. The ribeye wasn't ribeye & the sides were cold to at best warm. The one upside
was the service was good. All in all this was a pricey, absolutely terrible meal. Don't go & waste your money, we certainly won't

Portland, OR
Good food & even better wine list. I have to warn you, the main course portion is a little sparse. I finished my entire meal, including the side dishes & 3 little raviolis that accompanied my meal. I usually eat HALF of my order.
They have great views since they are on the lake and the bar looked really cool -- low profile couches around a fire place & a full bar. I didn't go in there because I had my little ones with me, which brings up another topic -- children. They do not have a kids menu but they offer to whip up mac-n-cheese or other kids favorites. My son (9) ate part of my meal (roasted chicken) but wouldn't touch my salad or pasta & he LOVES pasta. He liked the bread though. Plus they gave him an EtchaSketch to use while we ate. We were dressed in shorts & shirts aka golf-ish looking. We also had my 6 month old daughter. Never once did I feel out of place.
EXCELLENT service. Elegant and attentive. -

Our second time there, I've been looking forward to this for 11 months! lol YUM YUM YUM! the tartare trio is fantastic, something for everyone! The edamame tartare is so summery & refreshing, the beef i sperfectly seasoned and the tuna, the mayo hits it home! My son loved the oysters too! They have a corn chowder (without scallops for me) that was out of this world, flavorful & bold! My son loved the salad with hearts of palm & anchovies/sardines. He ordered the filet & shrimp which he said was fantastic, the filet was cooked to perfection. I had the halibut special, one with a green bean salad (not my fave) and the other atop a carrot cumin risotto that was amazing! Love this place not only for the food but the service too! Curtis you rock!! A def must return!!

The interior is absolutely stunning and comfortable. The view would have been beautiful if it wasn't raining that day.
The waitress my friends and I had was exceptional. She was more than attentive to our table; then again, we were one of the few ones at the restaurant.
My seafood stew was absolutely aesthetic and delectable. The stew was a combination of various, large seafood and a few slices of potatoes. The waitress offered more bread to our table realizing I was disappointed with the amount of starch in my meal. -

I am astounded by the lower than 5 star reviews for Five Spice. Their complete bamboo interior is stunning as well as their lake-side view. My favorite part of their assortment of foods is their happy hour. It is a good balance of gourmet nw-fusion and classic asian flair. Their wine selection is excellent and it is easily one of my favorite places to take my fiance and or clients; just an impressive space.

At last!!
I had heard rumors that this place had finally changed owners and was worth trying again, but I remained skeptical as similar ownership changes have happened in Lake Oswego only to be driven right into the ground by new owners.
This is a great location, nicely appointed and the food is finally good - although it is well past time to shake lose the last of the "Asian fusion" here, it just doesn't work. Rustic northwest, fresh pacific or even steak and seafood - but the 'Asian flair, just isn't there'.
The place was mostly empty when we were there, service was great. Quick, attentive, happy. The portions were on the smaller side - fine for me, but my 19 year old was still hungry. It plays well if you want a starter, entrée and desert, but that is going to add up rather quickly with wine. His $21 chicken was two ravioli and about 6 - 8 bites of chicken breast with maybe 1/4th of a cup of veg salad and about half that amount of mushrooms. It was actually a great size, but too expensive for so little.
Overall though, I am so happy to finally have a restaurant on the Lake to enjoy with friends again. When the new owner of what was the boathouse ruined that place with horrible food that actually made two of us ill, bad service and even worse attitude I was left wondering where I would go now. This is a good replacement and hopefully soon the boathouse will be closed by the health department or taken over by a more client friendly owner and be returned to its former glory. -

This is one our favorite Lake O. restaurants. It specializes in fusion cuisine. My fav appetizer is the Trio of Tartares -- beef, fish, and veggie. They also do a great grilled sea scallops. Five Spice is on the second floor of a new building in Lake O perched over the lake. In warm weather it's nice to sit outside but also quite enjoyable dining inside. The service is very attentive and the menu creative. We always make a point of taking out of town guests here if we're dining in town. Highly recommended.

I've never been disappointed in a trip to Five Spice.
The seared scallops were done just right, and the tomato bisque is just to die for. I've also enjoyed lamb and fish dishes there, always moist and delicious.
The Lake Oswego location is first-rate- beautiful views of the water at sunset, especially if you can get a seat outside (there's a nice little fire out there to keep things warm when it's breezy). -

Disclaimer: I had a coupon, getting $30 in food/drink for $15, purchased to support our local schools. My wife and I had come once before for happy hour and we had a nice experience, esp. dining outside overlooking (the now empty) lake. With this coupon expiring soon, we decided to have lunch there today, and we generally enjoyed it. We shared 3 appetizers (crab cakes, crab and beet salad, and corn chowder). First, the bread was delicious, just slices of a baguette with rich butter, and I meant to ask where it came from but forgot. Then the appetizers came out. The crab in the beet salad was pretty salty, and my wife thought the crab cakes were salty, but overall very tasty, and Five Spice does not skimp on the crabmeat! Still, $13 for 2 crab cakes seems a bit much. The chowder was very buttery, good with the bread, and we left very satisfied. I don't know how often I will visit Five Spice considering the cost, but for a late lunch with my wife, it was very nice. Nice service too, as others have noted.

This is my favorite restaurant in Lake Oswego. The service and food is fantastic. This is a great place to hang out with your friends or to have romantic lunch or dinner. There is an outside seating on a patio that you can enjoy with the view of the lake. I wasn't a big fan of the fried squid but their fried five-spice squid was delicious; you can taste the spices in the batter, not just a deep fried batter. My two most favorite entrees are the Seared Sea Scallop and the Grilled Ahi Tuna. Their Chocolate Bread Pudding dessert, yummy. It's so soft and not too sweet.

Five spice wasn't as good as anticipated. The best thing about the restaurant was the view and the restaurant inside has a cozy setting as the decor was very modern but something was missing. The service was alright but not great and the food was just OK. The Duck Confit appetizer was pretty good. The halibut was just not that tender as they might have undercooked it or could be a few days old. Black cod was good and the chinese sausage did bring out some flavor. I don't know it is a nice restaurant and seem to have a good happy hour menu, but too many variables on my visit and I just have to give it 3 stars for now.
