Stopped in last night to see what this "MOJO FITNESS" place I walk by daily, was all about...
I think if you've got the money, it could be very beneficial.
But, $40 per session, and it's not even private?! (1/2 hour). The session is a group of 4 people being coached. They recommend you go 3 times per week....
So...if I do the math, that is $480 per month. Ummmm...yeah, I would hope you'd have a 6 month satisfaction guaranteed for almost $3,000 dollars worth of training! If I pay 3 grand I better be f'ing Angelina Jolie when I am done!
Oh, and you also have to start with a health assessment and 2 pre-training sessions...which are about $90 a piece.
It's all just a bit too much money for me, but if you've got the cash (and lbs) to spare...it might be a good place to checkout. Very clean, staff is friendly, nice machines, etc etc.
But yeah, I'll just haul myself to the free gym downstairs...and be able to pay my mortgage. :)
Let me start off by saying that I spent over a grand to get the 30+pack of group classes which included what was supposed to be some "eye-opening" assessments. These turned out to be a generic computer print-out of things I already knew. For example: "If you're overweight, you're more likely to suffer health issues such as diabetes or heart disease." Really?! wow! I never would have known that! ;-)
Here is a list of other things that ticked me off.
1. A lot of lipservice was given upfront about there being support with nutrition and any questions I might have. I was told, "You just ask any one of us anytime and we'll help you out," and "You're going to have a 'coach' assigned to you to keep you on track with your goals..." All of this prior to signing up, of course.
Three months later, I'm still not sure who my "coach" is. I've asked for advice regarding nutrition. Whenever I did, I was asked to fill out time-intensive food journals and email these to the ever elusive coaches. Three months later, I've received no THOUGHTFUL feedback other than "buy these probiotic supplements".
2. Prior to their 30-day-money-back-guaranteed deadline, I sent an email to the owner, Erik, stating mutiple concerns. I mentioned that I would like hear how he could resolve these issues before I asked for my money back. He did not respond to this email. A few days later when I saw him changing the laundry bags in Massage Mojo (next door), he conveniently said he never got the email. This is highly unlikely, since Mr. Mojo (his email) is very tech savvy with wanna-be motivational videos which are sent out occassionally through email. The guy basically lied straight to my face. Disgusting.
3. The instructors push extra classes, massage & supplements. Unfortunately, they are not the least bit subtle. It's painfully obvious that they are only after your hard earned cash. Particularly when it comes to the extra classes and massage specials. After a while I started to feel like the customers were seen as wallets with legs. My observation was that customers willing to spend more money, got friendlier (albeit fake) service.
4. While the 30minute work-outs were pretty good, it ultimately didn't make up for the personalities of the instructors. I'm not sure what it was but overall I was struck by their lack of sincerity (specifically, the owner and the two more senior trainers). It struck me that they didn't give a damn about anybody but themselves and were focused on filling up the classes. As an example, I got multiple calls one day to come in at 5:30, then 5p, then 5:30 because, otherwise, my class would have just been me (To do a "solo" session for "group" person is probably equal to a level in hell for the trainers. They send last-minute specials via email to avoid such a scenario). Once they found an additional person to come in, it suddenly became okay for me to come in at my regularly scheduled time. This came off annoying and selfish on their part.
Ultimately, Fitness Mojo did not deliver on any of the promises made through website or in person prior to signing up for a program. What appears to be a good value up front is not. The classes average from $33-$40 per 1/2 hour session. Considering that you may end up sharing these 1/2 hour sessions with up to 3 other people, it makes better sense to find a personal trainer that is willing to split their hour work out into two 1/2 hour work outs.
11/26/09: It seems that Erik J, the owner, has responded to my comments. He claims that I purchased multiple packages (I only purchased one, at the beginning). He claims that I lost weight (I didn't...not a single pound, hence the complaint about being recommended supplements). He claims that the coaches were available at all times (also untrue). Why take the time to comment on a customer review, only to lie? Repulsive.
I had a very bad experience here. The owner really does not care about anything but money and pulled a fast one on a lot of people. I spent over $1000 on a "special offer" of training sessions only to find out the next week that the last of the remaining trainers was let go. They then only had inexperienced trainers that knew nothing about me and pushed me into injuring my back-making me feel like I was just being lazy when I was truly in pain. I emailed the owner telling him that I was unsatisfied and wanted my money back for the sessions I bought under false pretenses. He never even emailed me back and I had to file a dispute with my credit card company who luckily got me my money back. Horrible experience.

I have been going here for a year and it is worth every single penny I have paid. The trainers are… Read more »
I had an awful experience during my short time at Fitness MoJo.
I ended up with a broken elbow trying to perform a dubious exercise. The trainer didn't even offer me ice! What a ridiculous situation. What a ridiculous trainer - who obviously has a gaping hole in their training and certification.
It took 5 long months going to multiple doctor and PT visits. The worst part is that my arm is permanently crooked. Crooked!
Thanks for nothing, Fitness MoJo.
I LOVE this place. I have been a client for years and when I am there I always feel motivated. Their trainers are very professional and always give good insight into proper technique and even eating habits.
I prefer the team training approach and if you want a private session you can book that too. Folks might think that 30min is not enough but let me tell you, when you walk out of there, you feel every bit of that 30 minutes.
I can't say enough about the trainers, they are wonderful.
Very expensive! The trainers are good, but the customer service from them and the front desk is marginal. I would caution anyone from going here. The exercises given are very advanced and because you change trainers daily little is known about what you did the last time you were there. I have known a few people to become injured from exercises too advanced for their fitness level. Be careful!
This place is a total scam.
I had a coupon for 2 sessions for $99. When I went in, they said I actually had to pay for THREE sessions ($150) and pay for a health assessment (another fee). They would not honor the coupon that THEY put out in the market!
Here's the deal... you SHARE personal training time (with two to three other people!!!) for about $40 per HALF hour session. Not exactly PERSONAL training
Most GOOD gyms have one on one personal training for $80 or LESS!!!
Oh, and they will totally tell you that you HAVE to buy this $90 watch to monitor your heart rate.. they essentially won't let you work out without it.
this place is a scam, and you could get a much better deal from ANY of the much better gyms in the city.. I mean, you could even get personal training at Equinox for less.. and that gym ROCKS.
Here's my assessment... don't waste the time making the owners of this place rich. they clearly don't care about anything other than that.
