need a mug with famous republicans on it for your crazy dad?
need something "alice in wonderland" themed for a girlfriend?
need a kitschy, fabulous, colorful cake stand?
need a serving platter with an apartment floor plan?
need a cookie cutter in the shape of NJ for a native?
i'm not sure if anyone needs any of this stuff, but dang, fish's eddy has the best gifts around. this is my go-to spot for just about everyone on my shopping list.
and the prices! holy balls! how do they make such unique items at such reasonable prices?
word to the wise: don't wear a backpack when you're inside. oops.
I have to admit: I am domestically challenged. I don't cook. For how much I love to eat, I don't spend much time in the kitchen at all. I felt a kindred spirit to Carrie Bradshaw when she said..." he said the kitchen needs work...of course I don't know about that, because I keep sweaters in my stove..."
But that Fishs Eddy could be the one...the one to turn me into Suzy Homemaker, herself. How could I resist all that silverware, flatware & Alice in Wonderland themed glasses & coasters? Since visiting this Flatiron treasure, I have been fantasizing throwing dinner parties, imagining the limitless possibilities of themes, colors & tablescapes. Their array of unique China, glasses & dinner settings is dizzying & fascinating.
Major plus: so many affordable pretty things to pick up for the kris kringles on my christmas list.
Plates upon plates upon glassware upon silverware.
If you have a keen eye you'll notice that some of your favourite restaurants do their shopping here.
The Fishs Eddy line of dinnerware is fine, although the coloured plates have a tendency to scratch, but they've also got some Syracuse China still in stock and if I were you, I'd be running over there right now to buy some of the last plates that ever came off the line at the Syracuse plant.
God I love this place.
What can I say that hasn't already been said? I stopped in randomly the other evening and came out with so many lovely things, including an anti-freeze ice cream scoop ($4.95), and olive tray ($4.95 and who even knew those existed?) plus 12 martini glasses for a buck a pop! I had been searching all over creation for $1 martini glasses but couldn't find them, not even on craigslist. Their sale selection was out of this world, as well as all the rest of their items.
I always thought my kitchen was fine. My dishes are blue and they've always seemed ok. I got them at Ross for cheap. My glasses are all from thrift stores which is logical because I break them all the time. I thought I had some cute mugs.
This was before someone I thought was my friend took me to Fishs Eddy.
My dishes are crap. My kitchen is hideous. I can't believe I have people over. Everything I own is just woefully inadequate. It could be SO MUCH more adorable. I could have Heroes of the Torah glasses, Alice in Wonderland plates, beautiful floral storage containers...but I don't, because I'm poor. Poor with ugly dishes. Now I know. Thanks Fishs Eddy.
(As soon as I have more money I'll love you with all my heart.)
Question: Is saying "Fishs" as difficult for everyone else as it is for me?
Whether you're browsing or buying, I find it hard to walk down Broadway without stopping in this store. If you like unique gifts or you want to buy something for your own kitchen without spending a fortune, this is the perfect store to meet that need. If you find yourself with mix matched dishes, cutlery or glasses; you can great buys that are contemporary and of good quality.
For everything you need for your kitchen this place is tops for the assortment of unique finds in dishware and cutlery that you'd have a hard time finding elsewhere.
Sure you might pay a little less elsewhere, but I guarantee you'd have to run around to a few different stores to cobble together things. For that the prices here really aren't that high.
You're getting beautiful unique products all in one easy to shop place. The customer service is always great, helpful when you need it and out of the way when you don't.
When they have a sale it's almost always pandemonium because of how low the prices go.
On top of buying things for yourself many of their items often make great gifts.
Okay, yes, the stuff is cute and unique and there's lots of it. The store is lots of fun to browse. You can get some things for cheap if you buy during one of their great sales. But, in my experience, the merchandise quality is sub-par. I ordered lots of glassware from here for gifts once, and I was very disappointed. The glasses had no heft to them at all. Some things broke in the dishwasher.
Just know that you're paying for the unique designs, not for quality.
This place is an amazing find and he reason I will never go back to a Bed, Bath, and Beyond of a similar store for my kitchen needs ever again.
Half of the sore always seems to be on sale and nothing is sore on the eyes.
And even when Fish Eddy is swarming with people who are knocking passed each other dropping dishes along the way, the staff still makes sure that they are happy and attentive to everyones needs.
I walked in their with an arm full of groceries to pick up a box full of mason jars, and a woman stocking plates dropped what she was doing to carry not only my mason jars, but also all of my groceries , behind the counter until i was ready. At which point the cashier re-bagged my groceries for me so that i could handle everything better.
I love their unique and eclectic selection and their employees made my day!
Is this place called Fishs Eddy because it is like walking into a crazy fish market but instead of fish it's...dinnerware?
All I can say is that the little housewife living inside me was completely overstimulated.
So many colors. So many themes. So many bargains. So many...salt and pepper shakers. What's a girl to do!
We needed to get dinnerware for The Love Nest most importantly. I picked up some pink plates. She picked up some green plates. But both our hearts went a flutter when we found our Tiffany Blue dinnerware.
Oh, and then a deep purple fruit bowl.
Oh, and then a nut bowl. Because don't we need those too?
Oh, and then cookie cutters with our initials. Naturally, right? I mean, we need those.
Go with a list. Or some personal boundaries. It sucks you in.
I was one foot in the door of Fishs Eddy when I had an immediate life-realization, an A-Ha! moment so extreme that I knew there would be no going back . . .
I finally understood the appeal of being a housewife. And I'd have no problem being one myself, should anyone ever decide to finally like it enough to put a ring on it and then set me up with a cushy lifestyle and an unlimited credit card.
Because I could spend all day shopping in Fishs Eddy, pimping out my kitchen, and then sitting down, completely pooped, and saying to myself, "I really do deserve to pour some wine in this goblet* and drink until bed because I was PRODUCTIVE today and really accomplished a lot."
I can't believe I ever purchased all my kitchenware at Ikea. Forget it. From now on I'm going here. Plates and mugs designed like a notebook? Yes, please. Colorful plates the size of me for $2.99? Gimme. Dishes designed after New York, Brooklyn, and--my ultimate, personal favorite aesthetic ever because I am a lame former poetry major--birds on telephone wires? To quote the true D-List "celebretard" Rachel Zoe: I die.
To summarize: I am now saving up a hefty portion of my paycheck for a shopping spree. Once people see my decked out kitchen, someone is bound to make me his trophy husband. I just know it. Our reception will be held at Fishs Eddy. Don't forget to RSVP!

* Does anyone else watch Real Housewives of NJ? Dina drinks out of these horrendously tacky goblets and I love it. So fitting.
99cent Oneida butter knife and a $4 cheese cleaver!
This place makes you want to deck out your kitchen with beautiful bakeware, plates, flateware and a set of Brooklyn skyline salt shakers ($10 pair). They have everything from pristine plates to cute same sex marriage themed mugs.
I can't wait to cut into some cheddar with my new cleaver!
I'll admit it: I have a flatware fetish.
Walking into a store like this can be dangerous and sometimes deadly if one's credit card is near its limit. Vintage ceramic mugs, carefully tooled silverware and bubbly pastel serving trays abound.
And then sometimes they'll have a sale. Walking along Broadway yesterday I approached dubiously...wondering if I should dare stop in to pick up some glassware that I'm desperate for after a fiasco with a few drunken dinner guests this past weekend. To my delight, pasted over the windows were brown paper signs advertising in large script "$.99 silverware" "Plates $3.50!" and "Ceramic Dinner Sets, $16+!" Squeeeling like a freaky FANatic I rushed in and scooped up wood handled steak knives ($.99 ea), heavy italian glasses ($1.49 ea) and a cute cheese plate designed with the floorplan of a NYC studio apartment ($12.50) ... incredible.
I'm a kid in a candy shop here. All the dishes and accessories are fantastic and really, most of the prices are very fair. The sales are especially great. I have several weddings to attend in the coming year and plan to my gift shopping here.
I love this place so much I don't even know what else to say. And considering my tendency to be overly verbose, that says a lot.
I have a problem, it's more of an addiction actually. I walk in there and I want EVERYTHING! And if I already have a set, I want another. It's a fun place and it makes me want to cook... or at least plate my take-out.
It's the original designs, quality dishes, glassware, t-shirts, baking needs... that get me. I love the sale section for the basics - they always have great stuff.
Be warned though, it's a lot packed into a little small store. I would make sure to either go there first or ask the people behind the counter to hold onto your bags.
Don't enter this store with a lot of things on you. You will inevitably bump into something which could result in catastrophe. This store is aisle upon aisle of amazing dishes, mugs, silverware, glassware, etc.
So many things that I want to buy: very adorable and unique glassware, colourful dishes and tons of cool things to look at overall. If I ever need a dish or two, I'll be stopping by Fishs Eddy!
Adorable and unique kitchen stuff for totally reasonable prices? How have I lived in NY for four years without discovering this place?
As I wandered about the store, I found myself wishing I had a friend with a birthday coming up. A set of four glasses with the Brooklyn skyline etched around the outside for just $20? Amazing!
At the risk of sounding like a complete tool: I know a lot of girls. This is simply a fact (I went to a college where it was not uncommon for me to be the only guy in my classes). What do lady-folk from all different backgrounds seemingly have in common? Fishs Eddy. Chicks dig Fishs Eddy. I am tempted to legally change my name to Fishs Eddy, as then this statement would apply to me.
But if I did do that, I'd be the most narcissistic tool on the block, because I too routinely profess my love for Fishs Eddy... Yeah, you don't have to have all the fun girly parts to dig the place. Why? The store's got the goods. There's lots of interesting, clever pieces - everything from trays that look like your grade school stationary (um, graphing paper? Heck yes!) to plates decorated with New York apartment floorplans to mermaid bottle openers. I've been unenlightened for a long time - who knew dishes could actually be a conversation piece? Shit's sweet.
Besides really fun, kitschy stuff, Fishs Eddy also carries some very handsome looking flatware/glassware/barware/serveware/anything else you'd end with ware-ware. So Fishs Eddy is not only a total hoot, but also classy. What?!
I admit that in some ways I think of Fishs Eddy as a much more legit, much more creative and better-executed version of the kitchenware items Urban Outfitters offers - ever feel ashamed for kind of enjoying the stuff UO offers? I can totally relate, so go to Fishs Eddy and let them upgrade you (this does apply to the price level, but more importantly, it applies to the quality of the product by leaps and bounds).
Stop by the sale section - just walk towards the back and it should be on your right. There's a couple of steals there that ought to tempt you, especially since it won't completely torpedo your bank account.
If there is anything to be hesitant about when it comes to Fishs Eddy, it has nothing to do with their product or prices and everything to do with the way their glorious merchandise is piled up around their sales floor. Reading others' reviews, it's obvious I'm not the only one. Let's just say I would not come here in the least bit intoxicated. Definitely a recipe for disaster.
(It adds to the shopping experience, the element of danger... I could see how it gets that adrenaline pumping, especially when it's packed to the gills and there's a crowd in the store to navigate through. I'm sure you obstacle course junkies are furiously taking note, but please, I implore you to stay on your toes while in store. These dishes are works of art that do not deserve to be rendered useless casualties, the collateral damage of our selfish, destructive ways... Don't ruin it, ya bum.)
So yeah, if you need a gift for anybody remotely interesting or cool, you should be able to find something here. I recommend checking out the Fishs Eddy website (http://www.fishseddy.com) first to scout things out and get the juices flowing. You'll get hooked*.
*Hooked? As in, hooked like a fish? A fish, as in a FISHS EDDY!?!
::Crawls off into a dark corner to lament my lameness.::
Places like this really remind me of the Betty Crocker inside; hidden between the Nancy Drew and the Cat Lady.
Really cool dishes and not too pricey (for the most part).
This is an awesome place for those people that need something new to play with in the kitchen. Or just a cute set of glasses.
Very good for gifts.
Also, a fun place to wander if you like to look.
Kind of reminds me of the things you might find in Anthropologie.
Kitschy but modern.
Highly recommended.
Even if you have yet to discover your Chef Boyardee.
The first time I went in, there was a "we're not going out of business" sale going on. With a sale title like that, I HAD to go in! As soon as I walked in, I fell in love!! I wanted almost everything. Those ceramic glove molds, not so much. But the glasses, plates, bakeware, cake plates... It's full of both practical kitchenware and kitschy kitchenware. I have bought both. And love everything I've bought. Now it's a place I stop in whenever I'm in the area.
They have very nice and attentive staff and will hold your items for you in the front while you continue to browse. Which is a bit dangerous since then I don't know the true weight of the soon-to-be-mine plates/cups/platters that I'll have to carry all the way back to my apt.
You have to be very aware of your surroundings though. It's so full of stuff that you can easily topple things if you're not careful.
Very cute dishes, tote bags and various home goods. Love their 212 New York Skyline pattern... Great for gifts and souvenirs (beats the cheesy "I Heart NY" look by miles). This adorable store is a must-visit when in this lovely neighborhood.
Don't waste your money on boring Dept Store kitchen stuff. Go here for unique stuff you won't find anywhere else and save some $$$.
Ok, let me start by saying most of the things in there weren't necessarily my taste/style. But they definitely have a lot of cute things and are reasonably priced.
I would definitely avoid this on the weekend if you don't like the whole not being able to move while shopping feeling.
I went on a Saturday and maybe that was why I didn't really fall in love with anything there. I was much more focused on the fact that it was hard to move and I didn't feel like being around that many people with breakables everywhere.
They have a ton of different wine glasses which are inexpensive and I think they are perfect for a party because if one breaks, you certainly won't be upset about the $2.75 you spent on it.
Overall a lot of cute stuff, just avoid on weekends.
Whenever I get to this store, my heart almost stops with delight. I'm a great fan of all kinds of interesting stuff for home, and even if I do not buy anything there (I get completely lost and can't make a choice pretty often), I walk out completely happy. Very peaceful beautiful and stylish store.
This is definitely a great place for people who love with their eyes.
Sometimes the prices there really shock you because they are so low you almost can't believe this. Especially for a store with such entourage and wonderful salespeople.
Fish's eddy is a fun place to poke around. Old and Old-style dishes - often looking like odd lots from out of business restaurants. Lots of big heavy plates, cups, bowls and glassware. You can snag some bargains if you know what you need.
It's a chain - there are a few around the city.
Yeah, normally I sing the praises of Fishs Eddy to anyone who will listen. That was until today, when I tried to return something. Turns out, Fishs Eddy is one of those rogue businesses that has decided to deviate from the typical return policy, just to spice things up a bit. They will only refund your money if you bring back an item on the THE SAME DAY YOU BOUGHT IT. After that, they'll only give you store credit.
What? Is this like formalwear or something? Do people seriously buy (diner-style) dishes in the afternoon, host a dinner party that night, and then bring the dishes back the next morning? Give me a break. And yeah, those canning jars I bought 7 days ago? I totally went home and canned a dozen jars of peaches that night, and then I spent the last week just gorging myself on canned peaches (because that's what canning is all about -- consuming produce in the short term), and then I washed all the jars and lids and brought them back to Fishs Eddy. Because I'm such a trickster! I just love it when I support a small business and get screwed for my trouble.
I don't expect my review to scare off any customers -- and I'll be the first to admit that Fishs Eddy has delightful wares. I just figured I'd flap my gums about the obnoxious return policy so that you good people will be more cautious in your purchases than I was.
It IS crowded in here. Or, it can be. But it's also one of the best stores I've ever been in. I get swept up in all of the adorable glasses and plates and always want to buy everything. The staff is so friendly and never look at you like "Um, you're going to break that." The "NOT going out of business" sale is even better than the usually inexpensive stuff they always have. I got 6 glasses for $11 (4 of one kind, 2 of another). Amazing. It is a trick to get through the crowd but I am always going to be willing to do it. If I can't convince myself that I need something, then I just buy gifts here.
Oh, and last time, I came away with a New York State cookie cutter. Adorable. AND they have these great glove molds in the front which I've always loved. Luckily they have miniature versions too! Perfect for a jewelry holder/display.
Fun place to get a unique souvenir from NYC.
This place is unique. I recommend a stop here. I love the merchandise.
I don't know how to review Fishs Eddy. It's just too cool.
It looks like a place restaurants come to to get plates and such.
They just have neat stuff.
Subway map plates.
Alice in Wonderland plates.
Etc. Plates.
Fun glasses.
Silverwear.
Random hand sculpture things. (that I don't understand)
Tons of fun stuff.
It's a bit pricey but the quality of this stuff is prime. You won't be breaking this stuff washing it by hand (unlike my current dishes from Target)
Can a couple deeply in love, but with a yen for throwing plates at each other, find happiness?
Yes...IF they know about Fishes Eddy.
Fishs Eddy is the cutest store ever. It seems like it doesn't even belong in New York because its so cozy and charmingly quanit. True, it is a little crammed, but come on people, we're in NY where space is hard to come by.
They have amazing sales ALL the time and their designs are awesome. I love the brooklyn, wizard of oz, and alice in wonderland prints! If only I had a use for endless supplies of dining sets.
The sales staff is also extremely helpful and fun! I enjoy their banter as I wait in line. I also must note the excellent musical selections they play over their speakers.....
All in all...Fishs Eddy is a great place to escape to and fall in love with non-essentials.
I really don't know why, but I am obsessed with this store. Adorable and affordable, works for me! Great place to find unique gifts; I see potential birthday presents everywhere I look. That's just how my mind works. Weird, I know. I love stocking up on NYC-themed platters and dishes. Don't forget to check out the discounted area in the back corner of the store. Great deals await you!
What a great store to wonder around in. Excellent deals on glassware and china for the home, restaurant or bar. Staff was remerchandising like crazy on a Friday evening. Way to busy in the store to be moving displays of glass?? Kinda weird...
I used to visit the outlet on Staten island but they closed aover a year ago. Now they had incredible deals!
This place is kind of really awesome.
Randomly walked in here one day and was pleasantly surprised. Who knew something so close to Union Square could have cute, original items!
This place is the perfect place to buy gifts for your friends that like things for their kitchen and bath that don't look like it was from Ikea or Kmart. The prints they have for dishware, glassware, etc are all really cute and many of them have a New York theme to it (perfect for out-of-towners that want to bring unique souvenirs back).
The store has a homey feel to it.. it's small but packed to the brim with items (pretty sure I can knock everything over with my 10 lb purse without even trying). The employees seem to be pretty nice and helpful.
Quality is good and price is fair so what more could you ask for?
Minus one star cause they have these ceramic decorative "arms" that you can buy that I think are really stupid.
What a fun and whimsical store!
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
But, ya know, I gotta be honest: it's still overpriced, at least for this (shitty) economy.
What an odd little store. We used to hit the one up in UWS (which is now becoming some sort of steakhouse kind of place). I am a total kitchen gadget freak, but this place veers more towards the dinnerware variety (and more towards the foofy stuff), so I rarely walk out with anything - but that's not always the case, so I definitely enjoy popping in.
It seems to be a good place to get Christmas gifts - but since I only shop for the holidays about 3 days before the holiday itself (and I avoid NYC like the plague for the last two months of the year), it's only an idea and never a reality.
Maybe all you freaks that start shopping in July might actually score some stocking stuffer swag here. It's definitely better than getting another gag gift from Spencers.
Officially my favorite store in NYC. I gotta go back! Oh wait, they have a website! Yeay!!!!!
If you love bowls, plates, etc... This is a place NOT TO MISS!
Everything about it was so cool, and the people were really nice too, of course!!
Fishs Eddy withdrawal from SF....
Oh Yeah. This place is too cool. When I was graduating college way back in the early 90s I'd stop by this place and say that whenever I could afford my totally hip downtown, NYC apartment, I'd shop here for my kitchenware. Well, I never got that NYC apartment, hip or not. So every once in a while I still stop by the store to get a whiff of the old days.
The flatware, dinnerware and gifts are all totally original and quirky. Where else can you get plates with a Manhattan Skyline pattern? What started out as a rare find of dishware in an old barn for the owners turned into a gem for NYC.
Whenever I get nostalgic or want to surround myself with a cool NYC original, I stop by. One day I'm going to buy myself the whole skyline collection.
