I've never really been a sushi fan.  When my husband asked if I wanted to eat dinner with one of our friends here, I said sure, but mostly because I wanted to be social.

Whoa.  I see the light.  I guess I had been eating subpar sushi before, because this meal was delicious.  And you know, that makes sense- if you're going to chow down on a bunch of raw seafood, it's probably a good idea to shell out a little extra cash to get something of high quality.  We each got various iterations of the chef choice combos on the menu so we could try a little of everything.

Note:  They were very understanding when we asked to leave shellfish out of one of the combos- good to know if you have an allergy, or just have an aversion to shellfish.

This review is for delivery only!!

I'm not sure why this place has such high ratings considering what was brought to me at lunch today.  I got the chicken katsu deluxe set that comes w/ chicken katsu, rice, shumai, tempura and some soup and salad.

The tempura was GROSS. SOOOOO greasy and soggy and absolutely no flavor.  And it was broccoli, two pieces of sweet potato and a really oily gross piece of eggplant.  There was absolutely no crispness.  The shumai was the frozen kind they probably just dumped in the deep fryer.

Now onto the chicken katsu. Had they packaged it CORRECTLY, it would have been perfectly fine but because they don't pack it correctly for delivery the katsu was all soggy and had no crispness (just like the tempura).  It seemed that it had steamed in the container (usually they poke holes in the container to let out excess steam).

If you're going to do delivery from your restaurant, I feel it's the restaurant's responsibility to do it right!

I ordered delivery from this place, got a ramen soup and some sushi.  When the food arrived, the soup was all spilled, and not very hot.  I still tip the driver well as it is not his fault that the food was not packed properly.  Overall, i think that the $25 i spend on lunch was not worth it.

I would not recommend delivery from this place, but dine in experience is much better...althought the food is definitely not the best around the area.

Smokey Shiitake Mushroom Sushi! And vegetarian udon noodle soup?! The best! I love this place.  For veg-heads, get the platter for 12 bucks and you won't be disappointed.  Thanks for always being friendly and making the best vegetarian sushi in Allston!

I feel I might have come on an off-night and need to give this place another chance, given the superb yelp reviews. Our hot dishes were all-in-all overcooked - steak and salmon. The special rolls were pretty good, but the sushi wasn't too impressive Place is incredibly tiny, and service was rushed, yet still attentive.

There's not much I can say that's not already been said in other reviews, so I'll make this short: best sushi in the world.

The waiter recommended the jalopeno roll, and we chose scorpion maki for our love of eel and shrimp.  First of all, I don't even like raw salmon (on the jalopeno roll), but I found myself gobbling this up.  Never had I had such fresh and delicious fish!  The mayo was light and flavorful, while the jalopeno really made the sushi please versatile components of the taste buds. The scorpion maki was equally amazing.  The plump pieces of fresh shrimp artistically layered on top of the roll were oh so delicious.

This cute place in the middle of Allston is tiny, but we did not have to wait to be seated.  Good service, good price, and wonderful ambiance.  I smile every time I think about going back.

Came here on a visit with friends, and enjoyed the fresh fish that was artfully sliced and made into my meal. While the unagi was good, what I enjoyed the most was the kappa sashimi maki. I used to hate sashimi until I had truly good, fresh sashimi. What I liked most about the roll was how it was wrapped in cucumber, which made it even more fresh and delightful to eat!

This place is small, with a few small tables and a bar areas and can easily get crowded. I'm glad we got to sit at the bar and watch the sushi chefs work their magic!
Definitely going to hit the Fish Market up again when I'm back in Boston.

After seeing so many good reviews about this restaurant from fellow yelpers, me and a friend decided to try this place.

Started off with the Sashimi Deluxe which was assorted sashimi and it also came with a bowl of sushi rice. It's simply amazing. The sashimi (consisting of salmon, tuna, hamachi, sea bass, surf clam, sweet egg omelet, and crabstick) were very fresh and the plate was designed beautifully.  Amazed by its freshness and how good all the sashimi were, my friend and I decided to order more sashimi! yay!  They have a wide variety of sashimi choices, ranging from tuna to kobe beef.

Craving for some more, super white tuna, sea scallop, squid, sea urchin, toro, salt water eel sashimi were ordered.  They were amazing! the squid was cut into bite-sized pieces. The squid was fresh and i did not taste any fishiness. The sea scallop and the white tuna sashimi were the star of the night.  They were very fresh and the sea salt which was on the scallops compliments it well.  The super white tuna just melted in my mouth and it was truly an indescribable feeling.  The sea urchin and the toro were simply amazing as well.  The toro was mixed with tempura flakes and it was so good (it actually looked like toro tar tar).

The place is cute.  It is a bit small but the place can probably fit about 25-30 people. The tea has a special aroma and i am guessing it's the tea with the roasted brown rice.  yummm, it was good.

Overall, It was truly an amazing sushi experience. Delightful, phenomenal, and fresh.

Fish Market was just as amazing as I last remembered it. I'm convinced Fish Market is the best sushi restaurant I've been to. They take pride in what they serve, which is apparent with their closure on Mondays (seafood typically gets delivered on Tuesday mornings to restaurants; you want to avoid eating any seafood on Mondays because it's whatever is left over from the previous week).

The fish is fresh and the chefs are so skilled at what they do. You know they are serious about their craft when the sushi chef has a tuna tattoo on his forearm. This time, we sat at the bar and watched them handcraft our meal. We started off with agi dashi tofu, which could have been fried more crisp, but I enjoyed the delicate silken tofu in the shoyu broth. One of the new appetizers was the blue crab handroll, which was meaty and fresh. I stuck with the familiar rainbow roll for dinner, which came out fresh and satisfying. I also tried kappa sashimi maki, which was refreshing with the cucumber roll.

I'm still kicking myself for not trying the avocado ball, which I saw was going to a lot of other tables. It's one of their signature dishes, but at least it gives me another reason to come back here.

Bad. The rice was super dry. The shrimp on the nigiri was overcooked. The salmon plate was dry and overcooked. The ribeye, which was ordered medium-rare came well-done and was dry and gritty. We sent the steak back to the kitchen. The second steak was decent. The seating was cramped. My friends told me this was a great Japanese restaurant, but I thought it was sub-par. I may be a little biased because I lived in Japan for two years, but I would not recommend going here. On a good note, the service was good and the bathroom was clean.

My friend who lives in Boston brought me and another friend here and I knew it was good choice right away. A tiny place with the right menu choices for a pretty decent price. Boy, I was still surprised by the quality! The pieces of sashimi were very large, the sushi did not consist mostly of rice, and the service was quick. A nearly perfect sushi restaurant!

We had the sushi meal for two- $38

Siiigh...I really question the quality of mid-range priced sushi here in Boston. I love sushi, but I can't say that I am a connoisseur of sushi. For example, I still can't bring myself to eat salmon roe (but I do love smelt roe) and I would have trouble identifying sushi if I had to eat it blind-folded (that's a sexy idea...).

BUT! I know if sushi tastes good. I would say a quarter of the fish we got was really good and the rest was just okay. However, it was the rice that kinda really ruined it for me. The rice was so dry! It tasted old *sadface

Service was really good. The guy helping us out was very nice and attentive. No complaints there.

I would give Fish Market another chance...maybe the rice will be better next time.

    Siiiigh....there's always next time.

Being a native New Yorker, I take my sushi seriously.  I recently moved to the area and stumbled upon this lovely little sushi joint on Brighton Ave in Allston.  All i can say is, what a delicious surprise!

First off as other reviewers have posted, the restaurant is very small.  It probably only seats about 4-6 people at the sushi bar, and only has a handful of other tables that are no larger than seating for 4.  The decor is modern and sleek with green accents.  It is also immaculately clean.

Started off with the Miso Soup which was yummy and then my boyfriend and I split 4 different special Maki Rolls.  Prices were reasonable, and on point with other sushi restaurants I've eaten at throughout Boston and New York if not on the cheaper side.

As for the Maki Rolls go we ordered the Route 66, the Dragon Eye Maki which was wrapped in cucumber, the Seared Tuna Maki and a B52.  All super delicious- we devoured it all!

The waitresses were also friendly and had some great recommendations- they were also wearing green converse sneakers which was an awesome touch!

    Will be back :)

This is my absolute favorite sushi place in Boston so far, and I've been to a lot.  I like that it's small and cozy but you never have to wait to get a seat.  The sushi is fresh and delicious and quick to be made.  I love this place so much I went here for my birthday dinner last year.  They have a lot of fun different rolls, not just the average ones you find everywhere.  My best friend and I had fun just choosing which ones to try, and it was all delicious.  I can't wait to go back.

The fish was fresh and the rolls were amazing.  What more can you ask for from a sushi restaurant.  The avocado ball was great, but I have to warn you that it is really, really rich.  You could probably just order that for your entree.  I really wish this restaurant was bigger so it doesn't feel like you're sitting on top of each other.

Heard about this place from friends and I was excited to finally try it out with my sister.

Just to let you know, this place is TINY. But I was happy that we got seated right away especially since it was a weekend night and the place was packed. We sat at the sushi bar, which was fine by me. I just wanted sushi and I don't think you need a lot of table room for that.

This place is so small that they have only one waitress...actually, its so small that its all that they need, just one. But the way you order is interesting and pretty efficient. They give you a laminated menu and you mark off what you want with a dry eraser marker. And when you're done, you give it to the waitress.

I got a spicy tuna roll and a special roll (I forgot which but it was one with no avocados since I have an allergy to them :(...). The sushi was pretty good and fresh!

Service was quick and food was good. The only downside is that this place is tiny. Not good for big groups unless you rent out the whole place. A definite return with a friend or two...may be a date!

Some of the best Sushi I've had in Boston.  Consistent and fresh with friendly and quick service.  Can't really ask for more.

Must have dishes, in no order:

    -Black Cod Miso appetizer
    -Avocado Ball
    -Spicy Seafood Seaweed Salad
-All the sushi and maki.  Im a fan of their eel, salmon, tuna, blue crab, and anything with jalapeno or tempura.  White tiger roll and jalapeno twister maki's have been ordered more frequently than the others.

Stopped in for lunch last Friday after a meeting at BU. I may have been expecting too much because of my first amazing meal there, but I give them 4 stars for lunch. The lunch specials lacked the creativity of the dinner menu. At $9.50 for the Sushi Maki lunch (3 nigiri sushi of chef's choice; a choice of roll; a bowl of hearty miso; the typical iceberg salad with a better-than-average miso dressing) I feel a little guilty about not giving them 5 stars, but they set the bar high with my first visit. The sushi was fresh and the tuna was a turn on. The color was a deep, ruby red. I don't like fluke which always seems to turn up in chef's choice combos. In this case, the fluke was chewy. And the rice was too hard and didn't stick together. The saba $2/piece) was very good again, though it was shipped in from Norway because it's out of season in our waters.

Service was excellent. I was surprised to find a review from fellow Yelper MC Slim in the Stuff magazine I was reading. Overall, it was a tasty, cheap lunch.

Please don't be mad Fish Market. I still have a jones for you.

Yumyumyuum. Came with my roommates and my parents and were seated quickly, only to have my parents tell me that "they don't really love raw fish'". Face palm.

    Our meal:
    - The menu's really overwhelming, in the best way possible. A lot of original sushi combos.

    - Order the avocado ball straight off the bat, and take your time ordering the rest of your meal. It's this adorable hunk of raw tuna salad covered with an insane amount of avocado. So good.

    - Even their "normal" sushi, the inside-out makis, with the staples like California roll (my dad insisted on getting this) and spicy tuna were awesome and reasonably priced ($5~).

    - I got the baked spicy scallop maki for my dad since it was kind of cooked. Best dish ever. Warm sushi kind of freaks me out but I overcame my fear for this sushi. Perfect for raw-seafood-phobes.

    - Dragon Eye Maki was probably the least favorite of my dish. It looks awesome, but basil doesn't belong in sushi

Went here on a cold night last week. It is a very small place, probably only seats 15 people. The service was prompt, the sushi was fresh, everyone in our party (of very varying ages) was happy. This may sound odd, but the rice was amazing. I am talking about the rice that comes on the side for say teriyaki or the sashimi dinner. The rice was absolutely delicious, perfectly vinegar-y and sesame seed-ed. Every dish was consistently very, very good from the sashimi dinner to the udon to the special maki rolls. I highly recommend this sushi restaurant even if you don't live in the Allston area (which I don't). Worth the trek!

I was craving some creative maki and Fish Market delivered! We didn't bother with the sashimi tonight (because we always get the best at Super Fusion II in Watertown) so we ordered 5 differend maki's and started with their famous Avocado Ball. It was creative and absolutely delicious. Slightly spicy, but I love that.

I couldn't tell you every roll we ordered, but one was the Jalapeno Twister - what a kick!! We also had a cucumber rolled maki, Kappa Sashimi Maki and it was the BEST portion of fish to cuke... everywhere else we go is about 6+layers of cuke with not very much fish, here it was about 3 layers of cuke and a huge center of fish (tuna salmon yellowtail)...

All of the rolls were creative and individual. We loved the small 'hole in the wall' atmosphere. Walked in on a Tuesday night and sat down at the sushi bar right away. We were a bit bummed they didn't have a liquor license but I did enjoy the Pomegranate Izzie soda.

Overall, fresh fresh fresh, creative, comfy atmosphere, and I'm anticipating going back soon!

Fatty Tuna. Have you had it? I haven't, not until I went to the Fish Market. I've always been somewhat faithful in heading to Symphony Sushi, but now that I've moved to Allston it only seemed fitting to find something in the neighborhood. And guess what? These guys have something Symphony always fails to have: Fatty Tuna, a delicacy!

This place appears like a hole in the wall from the outside, but the decor is really nice and put together on the inside (someone invested in an interior decorator!)

We were promptly sat down and after giving our drink orders we were given menus that are dry-erase laminated with dry-erase markers. Its a nice touch, but I'd be lying if I didn't say some marker got smudged on my coat.

Aside from the usual California roll, Spicy Tuna roll, and ebi- we tried to be adventurous with some white tiger maki. Overall the food was great and the service was also.

My favorite Sushi restaurant in Boston. Prices are very fair, the atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, and the food matches or exceeds any sushi restaurant (including high-end establishments at which F.M.'s proprietor learned the trade,) in this city and holds up very well to others I have tried elsewhere.

Fish is remarkably fresh. Sashimi cuts are consistent and sizable. There is not a bad maki roll, and appetizers are very well done, some are quite creative. Have not had many entrees, but when sitting next to someone who has, they look good. Presentation is excellent without fail.

I love this restaurant. I tried it shortly after it opened and it has been one of my favorite Boston establishments ever since. You will find no better sushi without paying an arm & a leg, and even then it does not get much better than this.

Best sushi I've had in Boston, and I have had a lot! Delicious, well-prepared and well-presented. And NOT overpriced!

I recommend any of the makis. I liked anything with eel on it. The avocado ball is interesting and beautiful - I would get it if you like tuna.

The only thing is that the space is small, but I have personally never had problems getting seated immediately.

Also their miso soup is amazing.

I came back for a second try after a lackluster first visit. I live close by and was craving for sushi but I should have followed my instincts and pass.

I ordered a chirashi, which consists of sashimi over sushi rice. You can gauge a sushi restaurant's ability from this one dish as you can sample the sashimi which should represent the best cuts of fish, egg which demonstrates non sushi making quality, and rice the backbone of sushi meals.

The sushi rice was tough, and not that great. The tuna sashimi was the darkest bloody red color that I have ever seen I simply chose to not eat it. The egg was way to sweet and the ginger was soggy and inedible. The only decent pieces of sashimi were salmon and surf clam. Overall the sashimi seemed old and questionable.

Would not recommend sushi or sashimi based on this experience.

I'm giving it another star, mainly because I go here so often, and the sushi is just so consistently fresh and delicious. I have never had anything other than a wonderful experience here, whether its lunch or dinner.

The crazy eggplant, jalapeno twister and seared tuna never disappoint :)

Great place, nice people, good atmosphere. Service is great. Had the Avocado Ball - a unique dish with avocado on the outside and tuna sushi salad on the inside with a unique mayo dressing. I'm usually not a fan of raw anything, but I will make the exception every time for this dish.

First things first, we are not sushi snobs. We are not comparing this place to authentic sushi in Japan or something, this was just plain bad for sushi in Boston.

Miso soup was good, the place is very small with a few tables.
We got 4 different types of rolls, and none of them impressed. But why the lone star?

    Problems:
    1. Fishy: we got a special maki called "B52" which was tempura yellowtail roll which was so fishy and bland tasting at the same time. DQ who RARELY leaves a plate unfinished could not bear to eat more than 1 bite of it

    2. Portions: are we fatties or were the portions just plain TINY??? The price was average but the rolls were so skimpy there was no way to justify it.

If you want better sushi for this price point, take the 66 to Gari just down Harvard Ave. If you want the same tasting sushi for half the price, take a walk to Shaws up the road.

This small place offers some big taste around. My wife and I came here during a weekday before heading to the airport to pickup my uncle.
Finding a parking space is tough around here, so we had to park pretty far away and walked over.
It's small so it's packed during dinner time. Luckily we got 2 seat at the sushi bar which we can watch the chef do their art creation.
We ordered a couple of maki and a sashimi plate. The fish is very fresh and tasty, top notch around Boston area. The chef did pay detail attention on the way he slice the fish which you don't often see in some other sushi restaurants.
Another good thing about Fish Market is the price is not bad for the city, good experience here and will come back again.

    MMMMMMMMM....... Sushi.......

Yeah, that was the feeling I got every time I eat at this place. I have been here a few times, and I think this is one of the tastiest places to get some sushi in the somewhat decent city of Boston.

The first time I came here, it was for a lunch special, where you get a salad, miso soup, and a good set of various sushi. I got the Sushi and Maki Deluxe Set which is one maki roll and 3 pieces of nigiri sushi, which are pieces of raw fish served on top of these small balls of rice. It also comes with vegetable tempura and shumai, which are these small dumplings similar to the Cantonese Chinese siu mai dishes you get at a Chinese dim sum restaurant.

The salad was pretty good, the vegetables were cool, moist and fresh. The dressing made the salad tastier, and the did not put too much or too little. I loved how they presented the miso soup. They serve it in a cup-shaped bowl and they provide a saucer, as if you are drinking a big cup of tea. Miso soup was nice and warm, needed a little more wakame, but it was good soup. Vegetable Tempura is pretty good, they do not overly put too much batter, the vegetables are well cooked, and the sauce provided made the tempura tastier. Shumai tasted okay, nothing special. I had two pieces.

As for the sushi, I got a Spicy Tuna Maki. I liked the flavor of the tuna, and the rice and sauce inside the Maki made the tuna tastier. I also had salmon and white tuna, and the sushi was freshly tasty, and the soy sauce along with the wasabi and gari made the sushi really tasty.

I came back again, and this time I went with someone, and we ordered a bunch of sushi rolls. We got a Spicy Tuna Handroll, and a Yellowtail Handroll. We also got an Avocado Ball, and a few Special Maki rolls, particularly the B52, Dragon Eye Maki, and Spicy Crispy Tuna Maki.

The Avocado Ball is a fairly impressive dish, despite the size and the price. Presentation was impressive, made the dish look like "a work of art". The dish was really delicious, the lemon mayonnaise dressing made the avocado and fish really tasty. One dish is enough for two people to share. The Handrolls are a great choice even though they are $5 per piece and possibly 8 cm long. They are fairly generous in the amount of fish they put into the Handrolls in proportion to the rice. I really liked the Yellowtail, it was delicious. All the Maki rolls we had were also tastily good. The fish was consistently and freshly tasty, the rice was a good balance to the fish, and the sauces and cucumbers gave the fish great flavor and flair.

They also have fried ice cream for dessert and I think they do a great job, even though it is $4, I would usually get the Red Bean flavor. I liked the warm crispy batter on the outside and the sweet and cool creaminess on the inside. I think I may have had the best fried ice cream in Boston so far.

As for interior, it is definitely small, but I actually like it because it gives a really small, cosy, intimate cafe feel and vibe to it. The interior kind of brought back some memories of eating in an amazing and excellent sushi bar near the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. The seats are so comfortable and fairly relaxing. Service was decently good, the people who work there are a little nice, but they are definitely not rude and mean. The sushi chefs definitely can do an effective job in preparing sushi when they are not under too much pressure.

Overall, this is a really good choice for tasty sushi in the somewhat decent city of Boston and probably one of the best sushi I have eaten so far. This place may not have the best sushi in the world, but they can get the job done. The place may be small, but it's comfortable, and I have not had a really disappointing experience eating here so far. Although the dishes might be expensive, I think you are getting some good quality and fresh sushi, and they do a great job with presentation.

A small little sushi bar with great service, and some innovative industry sushi to back!  Far from traditional, they offer some excellent choices that I've seen in few other places... here's the skinny on what stood out:

Avocado Ball - beautiful in design, delicious in nature, and a very creative dish.  This dish alone will stand out for this restaurant as something to try and be remembed for.

Truffled Yellowtail - I love yellowtail... and I love truffle... but when the fish has been seared/cooked, I think it loses some of it's appeal.  On top of that, thin slices of black truffle with truffled oil across the top is a good attempt at fine dining, but doesn't quite cut it for me.  The dish doesnt' come together quite properly... each individual piece has it's moments and power, but as a whole, it doesn't fit quite right.

Jalapeno Hamachi - A far better experience that demonstrates a well conceived dish.  Excellent flavor, and the different component play off each other very well.

Verdict:  As a visitor, this place was enjoyable and tasty.  A Boston regular would do well to make this a standard place to eat...

When I first discovered Fish Market, I almost didn't want to write a review. The teeny place opened and produced such utterly mind-blowingly wonderful sushi that I was scared my accolades would send people there in droves.

I also think that day I had my narcissistic hat on.

And before I could gush over the wonder known as Fish Market, the whole city was rejoicing over its fresh, light fish, fluffy rice and nearly creamy miso soup. The fish is honored here and presented in a beautiful, delicate manner that enjoying these sushi bites is as good as your favourite song. I can't pick one roll over another: even the simplest spicy tuna roll is elevated to a level of sushi-euphoria at Fish Market.

The chefs simply allow each fish's natural flavor to shine. For the first time here, I had sea urchin. Its curious almost early, sea-bottom-like flavor was paired intriguingly with a light, citrius-buttery scallop. Poetry.

Went here with Rachel K last Saturday for what I was told would be some of the best sushi in the area and I was not disappointed!

Hailing from Ohio, I usually stick to the mainstays:California Roll, salmon, the basics. I went out on a limb and got the special "white tiger" maki, it was amazing!

Two gripes: wish I had ordered double, and wish I had wine! No alcohol here, major bummer. I'd go back for sure and try something else out of my comfort zone.

One of my fave sushi restaurants in the area.

Their sushi is always reliable to be nothing short of great. They have a fine selection of your normal go to's and some creative and really great alternatives. Their avocado ball is out.of.this.world! Their spicy tunas/salmons are a little too spicy for my liking, but I am sure are enjoyed by people who are into that. I have never been disappointed by anything here.

I do wish Fish Market was larger, as its popularity outweighs the room available for it. I have had to wait a long time for takeout on Friday nights on a few occasions. I am also quite upset there is no alcohol available here to feed my love for a great wine with my sushi.

The staff is always very friendly, efficient and timely. They also appear to have a very low turnover rate as I have noticed the same staff since it opened. This speaks volume for an establishment.

I, of course, will be back.
