I like this place! I would have to say it's the best Chinese food you can get during your lunch hour in the area.
Another plus in my book is that you definitely get a lot for your money. I can never stand it when some establishments charge too much for the quality they produce. First Wok is definitely not one of them! Again, good quality, great price!
This place is by my local Safeway and when I looked it up on Yelp, it got great reviews, so I gave it a try.
Let me start out by saying that I love American Chinese food. I actually like it better than actual Chinese food.
This place has HUGE portions. For $6.50, you can get a three items (one rice or chow mein), which is basically one of those Styrofoam to-go containers filled to the brim. I mean nearly overflowing. Plus, you get a cup of the soup of the day.
As for the food, it's very decent. The chow mein is exactly what you'd expect with good flavor. Beef and broccoli is good. The broccoli has some crunch to it, which is nice to see. I had the salt and pepper chicken as well. It had a touch of spiciness, and the chicken was boneless. Overall, the food here is pretty tasty.
The folks that work here are super friendly as well. Great place to get some food when you're too lazy to cook.
Note: They do accept credit cards, with a $5 minimum purchase.
These guys are awesome. The food is as tasty as it gets. The quantity is amazing. NO MSG. The service is to die for. On multiple occasions when they were running low on fried rice and kung pao, they'd make it fresh, only for me.
A 2 item plate is $6.
I hope they don't go out of business. Try them. You will not be disappointed. I guarantee it.
After the reviews I dropped by this place to pick up 3 item combo, thought will get variety to judge the food. Food looked great with different options from rice, noodles, entrees & compliment soup. The food wasn't that great though, normal chinese food. Cheap for the quantity but nothing great. But they have nice variety so would try something else & re-review this :)
Similar to Panda Express for combo items. The menu looks good too, should order something from the menu to get fresh food I suppose.
I came here with my bf in a wing of getting something for dinner. As we walked in the smells were so aromic that drew me in. As well as the sign on the menus out front stating "no msg" which really wins my heart! For those who know what i am taking about, thank god! We went with a couple individual platters as you would get like such placed like panda, luckys or chows. I ended up with the monogolian beef (which i did have to wait for a few minutes while they made a new batch) but was really satisfying. I also went with the homegarlice chicken, broc and beef and steamed rice. My usualls! Rest of food was eh, rice was steamed just right and delish! The bf's bbq pork chow mein noodles tasted rather odd but yet he continued on with his sweet and sour chicken and plain chicken fried rice. Not sure if we will venture this way again, but when your stomach is growling and that sweetness of hot chinese food is in the air, i guess you just go for it! By the way the platters were worth the price. I went with the 4 piece for like $8 and the spouse a 3 piece for $7. Not too bad compared to some restaurants you will normally walk out with $40 chinese and wonder which one you'll be chowing down the next day for left over!
As far as my Chinese food delivery experiences go (live in Sunnyvale), this place has been the best. Generous portions, fair prices, and quick and friendly delivery.
I'm now calling this place up twice a month...with no regrets ;-)
3 stars b/c: Very casual, inexpensive for the quality and the amount of food they give you, and the restaurant is relatively clean. The food was pretty tasty at a good value compared to other average Chinese places like Fu Lam Mum. The waiter & staff were inviting, friendly, and attentive. You can dine-in with table service, take-out through the buffet express line, submit your order online prior to pick-up or dine-in. They offer FREE delivery with a minimum order of $30. Party platters are available too.
Would've given 4 stars but knocked off 1 star because when I sat down at my table, the waitress accidentally knocked off the pack of chopsticks on my plate (which landed on the floor), and then picked it off the floor and put back on my clean plate. She didn't give me a new plate but instead a new pack of chopsticks, which was fine, but the chopsticks were wrapped and she should've given me a new clean plate-----I ended up wiping it myself with hot tea.
There were 4 of us & we did dine-in in the dining area. They offer a wide variety of items----most (if not all) of their dishes are saucy and/or use oil (it is not bad at all, just my own preference to just have something more simple). BUT, THE GREAT THING IS: they have a NEW LITE FOOD MENU where ALL items are STEAMED (no fat, no oil used) with a choice of garlic sauce or black bean sauce on the side. There is also a "specials fresh seafood" menu, but you have to order those 2 hours ahead & the price will be based on market price----call the restaurant for menu selection b/c it is not shown online. For the most part you can view the rest of their menu items on their online ordering website---prices are listed as well.
We ordered crab rangoon, pot stickers, westlake beef soup, prawn w/ lobster sauce, salt&ppepper fish, mongolian beef, sweet & sour chicken, prok ribs, combo chow fun, the new light prawns w/ mixed veggies.....a lot of food for 4 people, but we wanted a variety of items. the crab ragoon might have a biit a little too hard on the sides, but overall, it was all satisfying.
There isn't much of an ambiance---dining in here is probably more enjoyable when you are accompanied by family or close friends (it'll be quaint).
Overall, a pleasant mellow casual dinner with yummy food at a good value.
After reading the reviews on yelp, I decided to stop here after work to grab dinner. I arrived a little after 9pm and was a little disappointed the buffet counter was already cleared out . The lady working there was draining the water and wiping it down. =( The lady greeted me with a smile and seeing the confusion in my face told me I could still order. So I asked the lady for recommendations. She suggested Mongolian Beef ($7.95) and Sesame Chicken ($8.50). I was starving so I ordered both!
The servings were very generous, should last me an additional 2-3 meals easy. The Mongolian beef had more sauce then I was accustomed to but it was very tasty and spicy. The slices of beef were tender and were a nice medium thickness.
The Sesame Chicken looked appetizing and smelled garlicky but it was inconsistent. There were a few pieces of chicken that tasted like over-fried jerky and there were a few big slices that were moist and tender. The sauce was also very sweet and oily.
Overall I was very satisfied with the food and portion size. I will definitely come back but before 9pm. If you're looking for above-average Chinese food at a great value this is your best bet.
A cautious 3.5 stars.
Went there for dinner and ordered from the express menu. Chicken chow mein, salt and pepper chicken, orange chicken, and garlic chicken. The chow mein was excellent. Very chewy noodles, which I like, and lots of vegetables. The salt and pepper chicken didn't taste like much, but it was easy to add more salt and pepper. The chicken was pretty decent quality, especially for having been sitting around in the trays. The last two chickens, perhaps because they were sitting in sauce, were tough. I wasn't a big fan of the sauces, either.
The free soup, sweet and sour, was good. Lots of food, and a really good price. At least two meals can be had for $6-$8.
I bet their cooked-to-order food is quite solid. Maybe next time.
Maybe it's just me but when you go to a Chinese resteraunt and ask for xtra sweet and sour sauce or spicy mustard you normally get mean mugged and yelled at like ur asking for a first born child or something. NOT SO at First wok! They totally hooked me up with xtra sauce and were entirely chill about it. This is seriously the only place I will eat Chinese food PERIOD. They also serve salt and pepper fish which is a rarity and they do it right. I can't recommend this place highly enough Good price, great taste and possibly the only Chinese food resteraunt that has ever heard of customer service.
Was craving for Chinese food and figured to give this place a try based on the other reviews.
Place is clean, well organized, plenty of menu entries to choose from. Portions huge -- they fill to-go trays to the last bit of available space. If you mix what you get in the tray with some of your own veggies you have food for 3 easy. And they also include a free soup. All this with a little over $7.
Oh and last but not least, food tastes great -- or at least the couple of chicken based choices along with the fried rice I got were really good.
Sadly did not get FTR here but that's fine. This place replaces a Hawaiian place that replaced some organic place. Sadly it seems like this one location has bad luck.
Left work very late last night and didn't feel like cooking. I was about to go to Safeway when I saw that this place had opened. It's really empty inside, which is a bad sign, but I know this area and like I said it typically does not get a lot of business. But there is simply no other Chinese food around the area save PF Chang's (not Chinese) and Wok On! a mile down the way and Fu Lam Mum on Castro.
You can order things off the menu or go with the pre-made a la Panda Express style. In a hurry, this is what I did. For under $7 you can get 3 items which includes either chow mein or chicken fried rice or veggie fried rice as one of the items. I ordered salted fish and mongolian beef.
They really heap it on here. You knowt hose squarish styrofoam boxes? It's completely filled, like you'd expect at a Hawaiian place and definitely not at a Chinese place. It also includes a bowl (approx 1/2 cup) of either egg drop or hot and sour soup.
Verdict, the food was actually good. Better than any other fast food Chinese place and pretty close to Fu Lam Mum in my opinion. And this was for the pre-made stuff. The hot and sour soup has rekindled my taste for it. I could seriously eat oil drums of the stuff in college.
Not the absolutel best Chinese food, but it's better than most and you get an incredible amount of it. I weighed the food on my scale and you get about 1lb 8oz of food. Needless to say, I had it for two meals.
Please stay in business, First Wok!
Nothing special about this place. Food is not even worth mentioning. I was so hungry I could not even finish my plate, yuck. I feel like the dishes they serve was precook and done sloppily. Chinese food should not be served this way. just atrocious.
The owner (I guess) lady was very nice of this hole in the wall. But the food is actually pretty decent for its price. Love the beef and broccoli, the broccoli were crunchy and fresh.
I walked into this place last night as we did not feel like cooking. We ordered Hunan Chicken, Chicken with Cashew Nut and Veg. Fried Rice. The food was really delicious, not too oily and the chicken was tender. For the price of food, the chicken I usually very chewy like chewing gum but this place is different.
For $20 (with 10% discount coupon) we got three items and the quantity was good enough for eating the food twice. We were really hungry and yet could not finish the food. I am giving this four stars for now and if they continue to provide me with delicious food, I will give them five stars.
Recommendation: Go for it, finally a NY style chinese takeoout place.
Since I live right around the corner from this place we are here quite often. The waitress there is very nice even when we order 10+ dishes when we show up.
We have ordered a large portion of the menu and gone through the express line and had quite a large number of different dishes from them and not one has ever been bad. Everything tastes delicious from the fried meat dishes to the tofu and vegetable dishes. I highly recommend this place.
I was hungry and this place was open. I thought, eh, why not?
This looked like just another generic fast food Chinese restaurant and I expected the usual fare but I was very impressed by their use of chunky chicken breast meat. I never expected such quality meat and food from a fast food takeout place. I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back for the combos meals at very good prices!
Try the garlic chicken and mongolian beef.
Picked up some takeout from here with the girlfriend. We couldn't find the menu for veggieland therefore we decided, eh, what the heck, lets try something else. This used to be a veggie place with some of the best imitation-meat chinese food around. However, the owners closed down and First Wok came in.
We ordered the Tofu with Hot Sauce as well as the Garlic Eggplant. Also got some fried rice on the side. The Tofu wasn't hot and the chili sauce they have didn't make it better. The eggplant was ok but I thought it was better than the tofu. I thought about giving this 3 stars but the whole feeling I had after eating was that I could have gotten better pretty easily, so I went with two stars.
microwaved to reheat chinese food?????
I'm out.....
Americanized, rather bland and greasy Chinese food. Very cheap, and you get quantity for the price, so for the college student or the person who just wants a quick and filling dinner without worrying too much about the quality will be satisfied. If you're used to eating great Chinese food, you're better off going somewhere else.
Clean and good food
Ordered $40 of food to go. Then read that they give different additional items depending on the amount you buy. This wasn't offered @ the time when I ordered and would have walked out without knowing unless I saw it while reading through the menu. There was no problem in it being given once asked but would be nice to have been able to order it when I first placed the order
good food
We ordered from their online menu the other night. The process was actually pretty simple and worked well. The food got to us in about 30 minutes and the order was accurate. The one tip for anyone ordering online is to remember to order rice with the dishes.
As far as the food went, we thought it was pretty decent Chinese food. Portions were standard takeout portions. A couple of the meals seemed to be a little spicier than other Chinese places we've eaten at, but that wasn't a bad thing in our opinion.
Overall, we were pretty pleased with our meal and will be going back.
Based on the name, the buffet line, and the fact that there was only half a Chinese patron here when we walked in, I was a bit worried. Though my co-worker is one of those "ethnic food on the safe side" kinda people, we've been pushing him to stretch his boundaries. Turns out if you get the right things, it's a legitimate place for solid Cantonese style food. Many of the items I wanted to try require a 2 hour notice (many seafood) to get so I'll have to give those a try next time. There were 8 of us and we ordered 9 dishes with them all being pretty solid. As we ate more and more older Chinese patrons started flowing in so this place truly caters to both types of Chinese food crowds. The server/owner was super friendly and she told us we were the catalyst for bringing so many people in. If it weren't for Yelp and the internet we would have definitely never given this place the time of day...
I was there for dinner last night, and was impressed by the quality of the food. I'd ordered the mongolian chicken and orange chicken for myself, and Broccooli shrimp and fried fish for my friend. It really hit the spot. There was enough food for three meals, as they really heap the portions in the takeout containers. I definately recommend.
We ate at this place last night. It's a little place in an ill-fated location. Tucked away in a shopping center with very little visibility. They've only been around a month and the last two places were a hawaiian BBQ place and some organic/vegetarian place.
We walked in to a clean/nicely set up restaurant. They had a table big enough to seat us (a nice large group of 8 people). They even had a nice glass 'lazy susan' in the middle of the table for easy access for 'family style' sharing of the food. The chopsticks were disposable 'break it apart yourself' style, but I'd never seen ones that were quite this good. Perfectly shaped and not the cheap things you get at other places.
The time between ordering our food and getting it was wonderfully short. And then comes the food...
I can honestly say that I have never had better Chinese food in my entire life. You bite into the crab rangoon and you can see the nice hunks of crab meat in there. The Broccoli Beef had broccoli that was cooked to perfection and the beef was tender and utterly delicious overall. Their Orange Chicken was tender and delicious. Three different types of Chow Mein that even 'I' liked (and I don't normally like Chow Mein). Then there was the House Garlic Beef. You have to try this if you go there! Even the hot and sour soup was wonderful!
While we were eating, the waiting staff were attentive and checked on us regularly for refills of drinks and to see if we needed anything else...wonderful!
Then came the fortune cookies, a staple for any chinese restaurant. Even these were delicious! I don't know what company they got these from, but more places need to start buying from them.
And then under them, the check. Enough food to feed 8 people...with leftovers...and the total charge was only $75! Everyone in our group could not stop raving about the food. First Wok is going to definitely be our first choice for Chinese food from now on! If I could give this place more than five stars, I would!
This is a cross between a premade panda-style place, and a tradition made-to-order place. I was able to order via web (a plus for people with hearing loss), and it was ready when I showed up. Pork fried rice (special order), and prawns, no problem. The food was what I'd expect and the price was right.
