3 reviews for First United Methodist Church
So, I checked out Seattle First Church back in 2006. I wanted to go to an inner-city church since I lived close-in on Queen Anne hill at the time.
I was impressed totally by the openness, honesty and hope that I perceived from the congregation. I didn't sense any pretense or superficiality in the welcome I received, but more importantly, I sensed genuine hope and care between the people there. It was totally refreshing, especially when living in an urban environment where sometimes people are distant or removed. They cared, and they showed it, as I noticed from their homeless outreach program.
I joined the choir in the fall of 2007 (tenor section rules!) and found a home with the choir. Great music, and fun people to be around made the experience a lot of fun!
The most sincere and beautiful outpouring of this group, and the choir in particular, came about in the spring of 2008 when they supported my partner and me so warmly before and after he passed away in April '08 at only 37 years of age. Their care, prayers, and presence was more beautiful than words can explain.
So, I became a member of the curch (officially!) on October 19, 2008 and haven't turned back since! I've found additional ways to explore my faith by joining a Bible study group, and am participating on committees/teams that help get things done by serving the congregation and our neighbors. Who would have thought I'd get this involved with church??!! :)
To me, First Church is a refuge in a busy city, a safe place to find out more about who I am and to learn how I can make a positive difference in the world around me.
I thought it crazy that just Pastor Sandy wrote a review, so here goes:
I'm a new member that has been all over the map in Christianity. This is a place that lets me flop around like a fish in whatever spiritual struggle or doubts. These people, we, accept others wherever they are at. Seriously.
This is the first church I have been to since I moved here. I don't remember for what holiday I went exactly but I enjoyed it. It was different than the churches that I normally go to back home.
Specialties
No matter what you wear, where you're from, or your life experiences, there's a place for you at First Church. We are a progressive spiritual community of faith, and we believe that God invites everyone to be a part of the body of Christ. Worship services are held at 10 a.m. at our temporary location at the Seattle Children's Theatre.
We have a long and proud history of serving Seattle's urban poor. A new 24-hour enhanced men's shelter program will be housed in our new building, and we'll continue to hold our bi-monthly Shared Breakfast for the Hungry there.
Established in 1853, First United Methodist Church is Seattle's oldest congregation. In late 2007 we sold our historic building at the corner of Fifth and Marion and are now preparing a 21st century building for our ministries. Our focus as a congregation is simple: Love, Grow, Serve. Those three words describe both our mission as a church and our recipe for joyful living.

History
Established in 1853
We are Seattle's oldest church, founded in 1853, two years after the Denny party first landed at Alki to homestead Seattle. The first worship service was held in a log cabin, and was attended by the entire population of Seattle -- 30 people in all.
First Church has been tending the soul of the city for over 150 years, and is defined by decades of housing poor and low-income people. Over the years, First Church has offered sanctuary to Chinese workers (during labor riots of 1880), protested Japanese internment (during WWII), and served hot, nutritious lunches to seniors in need (in the mid 1900's).
In late 2007 the church sold their third historic building (built in 1910) at the corner of Fifth and Marion, and are now preparing a 21st century building for their ministries at Second and Denny. The building is slated to open in January 2010.
