I've really grown fond of this place.  I think it has a totally fun atmosphere and staff is really nice.  Firehouse is not a fancy place, so if you like to stick to fancy places then you should just head over to Santana Row and don't bother.  However, I love me some Firehouse.  The drinks are reasonably priced and the portions are always generous.

There's limited outside seating, but nonetheless you can sit outside if you choose.  There are tables near the door entrance and a few more tables in the back of the bar.  The place is kind of small and I wish there was more space to walk through  to get to the back area where the restrooms are located because sometimes I feel I need to throw my  hands up in the air as I'm walking through a crowded bar area so I don't accidentally touch someone anywhere where I shouldn't.  There are tv screens for all the sports fans so that's a plus.

Drinks you should get:  Stop light and flaming dr. peppers!  They can definitely get the night going because you're racing with your friends who can finish the fastest!  I had ladies night out yesterday here and I chugged my drinks down so fast I won by a landslide!  Also, it's awesome seeing the bartenders make the drinks because you realize how SKILLFUL they really are.  I mean, anyone can pour a shot right?  But can everyone make stop light drinks?  It's always entertaining seeing the bartenders make  drinks.

Oh!  And the food!  The food is pretty damn good.  I've had a lot of things on the  menu and my favorite are the steakbites!  The flavor is just so delicious!  You have to order these and try them for yourself!

So on your next night and you  happen to be in downtown San jose, make sure you drop by this place and have a DRANK.

Steak bites, simply too good. Tender, chewy, medium rare, can't get any better than that. If it's your first time here, you can get an appetizer for free.

The memphis burger (beer battered onion rings, smoked bacon, Firehouse BBQ sauce, mayo, and cheddar cheese.), hands down the BEST BURGER I've ever had. Their onion rings are flavorful and mixes well with the beef and smoked bacon. Definitely would come back just to get the burger.

This place always has some interesting characters that cruise through and chill.  I've personally experienced some two or three, but this just makes for an even more eventful night.  It can get tight so stand off to the side and you should be cool.  There are tables at the back end of the bar which are usually occupied every time I make my way into this establishment.  It's good fun nonetheless.  My only gripe is they didn't have Sierra Nevada when we were there, and that wasn't the first time.

None. Zip. Zilch.  One star knock-off since it happened more than once.

Bartenders are definitely friendly even when they are super busy.  I know I'll be back soon.  Crossing my fingers they'll have some SN for me when it happens.

What a lively, fun place to hang out! I stopped here for dinner and drink before Sharks game. We arrived around 6pm and this place was packed already, but it was worth the wait by watching the bartender whipping out some cool drinks and catching up with the game scores on TVs.

I really liked my Santa Barbara burger. It tasted fresh, like they just took the meat from a cow! Crunchy toasted sourdough bread and thousand island dressing... hmm... hmm... good! I took a bite out of my husband's Memphis burger and it wa towered with onion rings and bacon, I could not take a bite of the whole thing.

Server was very friendly and attentive. This place has the real "pub" atmosphere with darker lighting, close together tables and a bit sticky wooden chair. Old fire fighters gears displayed all around the wall along with a big screen TV on the back. I'd come back here again to try food and some of those exotic fun drinks on fire!

They have a cool fireball Dr. Pepper drink.  Otherwise, it's a small but lively place.  I think it might be better than the Old Wagonwheel Saloon next door.  Kind of hard to move around.  Men's bathroom is also kind of "interesting" (I'll let you go check it out for yourself.  All in all, a likable place with friendly staff and a nice atmosphere.

UPDATE: Went back to this place last night.  It's quickly becoming my favourite bar in town.  Again, should reiterate the friendly staff.  They also have a big projector TV in the back that I didn't notice last time I was in, plus a couple smaller TVs around the bar.  I'm interested to try their menu at some point, since it actually looks pretty awesome.  On that note, I hit up their website today and discovered that you can get a free appetizer on your first visit, sign up for some points system they have, and get lots of other freebies if you check it out.  So, in summary: be sure to check out their website, in addition to checking this place out.

I still think this place is too small but service is ridiculously good. I came with four friends and we asked about the free appetizer with Yelp check-in and the waitress asked us HOW MANY of them we wanted to use. Yay, more free food for us!
We ended up being every economical and only had drinks and ordered two entrees to receive two free appetizers (please don't judge us!). Food was on point for a small bar and grill. I loved the way my patty melt was prepared, and it was even better with some lemon squeezed on and the horseradish sauce from the steak bites added. Yummm!!

I still can't get over how nice they are here... I love San Jose!

I"ve only been here once with a group of friends to do a bit of bar hopping and told me about this place. We had our drinks here, and it was pretty crowded. Means only one thing, everyone either loves hanging here or sports related.

Overall, I can't say much on the food, but the drinks were cool. I would come back again for sure :]

Firehouse is a must visit bar downtown. It's located away in San Pedro square, away from all the clubs. The bartenders here have a good time while they're working and it resonates through the crowd. The drinks are very stiff. The chef takes great care of every plate the leaves the kitchen.

I can see the appeal of this place for nights when you want to go get rowdy with your friends. The bartenders are very engaging, and the time I saw one of them do a stoplight shot (or whatever you call it) stacked nine cups high was the coolest thing I've ever seen at a bar. Their check-in deal is pretty awesome, and definitely order the sweet potato fries. Unfortunately, not the full five stars because it's ridiculous that there's only one bathroom and a narrow walking area, considering how crowded it gets.

I love it here! Usually not the first spot on the hipster/college student's list, so the environment is much more laid back and fun. The bartenders are funny and nice. The music they play is much more my style: Rock! Sure, it can get crowded and rowdy on your typical Friday or Saturday nights, but any other day of the week, the place is very casual and conversation-friendly.
Did I mention I love it there yet?

Tried the steak tips, burger, wings, all pretty good. Well-priced, good atmosphere. However, the service was terrible. Our waitress checked up on the table next to us every like 10 minutes it seemed, while we waited forever every step of the way -- to order, for drinks, for refills, for our check, everything. And I know she wasn't busy, because the place was only half-full, and I could see her sitting down and eating with people at the table across from us while we waited for her to bring us drinks. Come on now.

    FIRST TIME AT THE FIREHOUSE.

And don't know if I'd go and repeat myself, you shouldn't repeat the same mistake twice.

And was this a mistake? Not really, but it didn't stand out.

    WE ORDERED:

BUFFALO CHICKEN WRAP: That could have used less salt, but overall packed punch, flavor, and was worth putting in my mouth. Loaded with cheese, tomatoes, onions, and buffalo chicken.

BEEF BITES: An appetizer, good meat, could have been more tender. But for $12, it was good. And with our Foursquare check-in special, it actually ended up being free.

CHILI DOG (WITH TRI-TIP CHILI): Conceptually, sounded good - but when it came out, it ended up not being as good as it should have been. All the ingredients on it, it should have packed some sort of flavor. Salt could not save it. Nor could hot sauce.

Server was nice, prompt, helpful and attentive. The atmosphere was awesome for San Jose, because of the patio and good people watching. It's something that you don't find anywhere else.

Might come back to drink, but food didn't seem to impress.

We didn't get food, so I can't comment on that...but I am not planning a return.

    Good things:
    - Stop light shot was cool to see the 'tender prepare
    - ...

    Not-so-good things:
    - We saw someone pick up a cigarette from the gnarly bar floor and try to smoke it.  I can't even begin.
    - The extreme yelling of effectively GET OFF OUR LAWN after closing was...insanely intense.  I didn't realize it was standard procedure to harass your clientele off public sidewalks because it's still kind of close to your bar.

Yikes.  This place is probably super-rad if you're still in the college-y, beer soaked floor phase.  Sadly, I am not.  2-stars for me being old and lame, but I stand by my review!

This is a great place to go to for a good time. Perfect for taking out-of-towers, a date, good friends, or all! This bar is very mood lifting and makes it easy to socialize. The music is at the right volume where you can hold a conversation and not hear other conversations.

You can't come here with people and not do the Stoplight Shots! It's the star of the bar. Each person gets three shots of different flavored vodka mixes. Green, yellow, and red to resemble a stoplight. The bartender rings the bell and the race is on. You must finish all the shots in order to be the winner. It's always a great ice breaker and the shots aren't too strong. Don't miss out on the fun!

The bar is pretty small, expect to stand. The staff is great and the crowd is friendly. There are tv's here too if you want to catch a game a knock back a few beers. The price is average for a bar but they do have a happy hour. If you live in San Jose or have visitors, take them here to have a taste of our local flavor!

Came here on a Friday with a group of six for happy hour and was greatly disappointed. We chose this place because of their offer of a free appetizer with the link on Yelp but they didn't even seem very happy to fulfill it. I'm honestly surprised that this place is rated so well.

First off, the service was terrible. Our waitress ignored us a lot of the time and kept making inappropriate, sly jokes. She didn't seem happy to take any of our orders and did the bare minimum. For instance, we ordered beers to begin with but once our glasses were cleared, some of us just wanted some water with our meal. When we asked for water, only one glass was given. Also, when it came to the coupon, she gave us our checks and we were suppose to input our order number into our phones to get the new total. She came back soon after and rudely asked, "are you done yet?" which made us feel rushed. Also, after paying our check one of my friends asked for her change in ones. The waitress said in response, "is this stripper money or something?" We didn't think this was funny especially when she said it so rudely.

In terms of food, nothing was anything special. We ordered a cheeseburger, chicken tenders, a caesar salad, and the cocktail prawns. I didn't feel like anything was good enough to want to come back! It was all pretty generic.

If you plan on coming here for dinner and drinks I would suggest coming around 6:30ish. That way you could take advantage of both the happy hour price and free appetizers (with the mobile coupon) after happy hour ends at 7pm. During happy hour the beers on tap are $3.50 and the specialty drinks are $4.

I love this place and one of my favorite bar. Every time I am back home in San Jose, I have to come here. The deals are great during happy hour. Where else can you get a pint of guinness that cheap.

This is one of the bars that inspired me to get into bartending as well. I just love the atmosphere, bartenders are super nice, and every drink I've had is well executed. Talk to the bartenders, they really know what they are doing and love what they are doing.

This was actually my first bar and the bartender really walked me through and I actually learned a lot. I had a flaming dr pepper for the first time that day and they are amazing. I make my own at home now and serve it to my guests. Still one of my all time favorites.

The appetizers, small but sooo good. You can't order just one, I dare you

    I've experienced better.....way way better.

My friends and I came here on a Friday evening and we were NOT impressed, which is disappointing since this place seems highly rated. I wanted to like this place, but sadly, there wasn't anything I particularly enjoyed....except for the plasma TV that was next to us.

Tip: BE PREPARED WITH THE YELP COUPON. It's not as easy as it looks, even the waitress seemed to dread the fact that we brought it up. It was kind of a hassle if you ask me. But who can resist a FREE appetizer? Annoying yet also rewarding.

The service was kind of bad. We weren't asked for water. We waited a long time for the waitress to take our order. Maybe it was because we made her wait for our other party members, but still.....minus one star.

Usually in these cases, I think...well, maybe the food is great! WRONG. I ordered a chicken caesar salad, and for some odd reason, it was the last to arrive. WTF! The salad wasn't special. Pass.

The fries (both regular and sweet potato) were eh. The chicken tenders were probably the best thing we ordered, but that's like 3 stars. It doesn't take that much for chicken tenders to be good though. I feel the same about the cheeseburger.

Tiger prawns were good though. I'll give them that.

Maybe I need to try this place out again at another time? But from my first experience, I probably won't. PASS.

We came here during happy hour on a Friday. It wasn't crowded and there were 3 people working. It took them 15mins to take our orders and another 20+ for our food to come out. The food came out before our drinks! On the plus side, they have decent happy price for beers and well drinks and thats about it! By the way, if you want a weak drink combined with loads of sugar/syrup then get the watermelon coolers :( for $5.  Now on to the food....

The steak bites is dry, need I say more?

The chicken tender and wings tasted like it was right from the frozen package.

The fries are soggy and your typical fast food fries but the sweet potatoes fries are satisfactory.

The only decent dish that we ordered were the sliders, so if you must go here and order food, I would settle for this dish only!

Overall horrible service, bad food...please go to Yardhouse instead!

Came here for their happy hour.  Cheap beers.  Awesome.  Shock tops on tap, even better.

What wasn't great? their food.  Cocktail shrimp was horrrrrrrible.  Overcooked, stiff, tasteless shrimp with uninspired cocktail sauce.  Probably jarred sauce with previously frozen precooked shrimp.

    Wings were pretty ehhhh.

    Steak bites were whatever.

Fries are fries, nothing to mention there.

Chicken tenders are not crunchy and dry.

Sliders were okayyyyyyy, bread was good meat was kinda bland but cooked to a good medium.

Took probably 15+ minutes to get our drinks.  We did have a party of 9 though.  But i saw one employee just messing around.  I was really thirsty after the 6 hour commute to San Jose so that probably made things worse.

Good bar.  Food sucks.  If I was just drinking, I'd probably give this place a 3 star.

I tend to like the San Pedro area of downtown - crowds tend to be on the younger side, very mellow, and not thugish like other areas.

When down there I always make a stop at the fire house.   My first experience at this bar there were 4 customers (female) dancing on the bar.  That set my expecations to how fun this place can be.

When there are downtown events the place can get very crowded (lines etc.) and I tend to stay clear.  Even in those cases the staff has been very accomodating and getting a drink wasn't THAT difficult.

Again, as an avid bar goer - if you are looking in DTSJ firehouse should be a stop on your tour.

My lovely friends ordered one of everything on the HH appetizer menu, The items that deserve recognition are:
    1) Steak bites
    2) Sweet potato fries

Unfortunately, everything tasted very similar :(

Considering it was HH, the bill was awesome. 3 drinks and ~9 appetizers came out to be less than $60.

One of the best bars that has some of the most unique drinks in SJ! Come here for the famous flaming doctor peppers and stop light drinks.

Both are unique concoctions that are too hard to explain, just trust me - it's worth it (and affordable).  It's a packed house and the staff deserves the tips. Most bartenders bore me, but these ones are really friendly and keep things fun and wild.

I love this place. I think their appetizers are all pretty good. I really like the steak bites and the tiger prawns... but I love the chicken tenders. I know, big whoop, chicken tenders, right? But man these things just hit the spot. You take a bite, and steam billows forth and there is a perfect breading to meat ratio. The other food is great as well...

BUT this place really shines during happy hour. The servers are sweet, the bartenders are great, and there is a nice chill vibe that can still pick up. The full-stocked bar makes it easy to get your drink on, and it helps that the deals are super affordable.

If you're a young professional and you work downtown, and you're looking for a chill place to eat and grab a drink, I definitely recommend this place. Just be warned... things can turn unprofessional, fast (in the best way possible). Bottoms up!

Great bar, great drinks but not so great food.

Steak Bites- Pretty good. The steak cubes were cooked to a nice medium rare, with a nice char from the grill and smothered in some sort of peppery bbq sauce

Foot long chili cheese dog -came as 2 - 6 inch hot dogs. They tasted almost boiled, and then topped with a generous heap of chili. The chili barely had any meat and was more like a thick gravy. A little too salty with not much any other flavour

Chopped salad - The salad had way too much dressing and too many different toppings. It was suppose to have black olives but they forgot it. The salami cubes were actually not very good. not very appetising overall.

Service was ok. we were seated outside on a slow weekday... got forgotten halfway through our meal so tryin to order another round was challenging.

Came here for the first time before a Sharks game and was pleasantly surprised to find this place that I have passed a bunch of times! The atmosphere is great with all the Sharks fans, love all the TVs (big and small) to watch the games, the bartenders and waitress were super friendly, and the food was good. We ordered the chopped salad (huge portion), onion rings (not greasy), and the chili - that left a little to be desired but it wasn't horrible. We also used the Yelp free appetizer offer so between all the food and drinks we ordered, it was definitely a reasonable price! I look forward to coming back and trying other things on the menu!

Sports bar with sports bar food and sports bar ambiance = For the ******** win.

    --------
Food: Out of four possible stars: three stars.

We ordered the steak bites, sweet potato (!) fries, onion rings and two orders of the chicken wings. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat the meat (Good Friday), so my friends had the steak bites and wings to themselves... In their opinion, the steak was really juicy and tender, but they weren't fans of the wings.

At least I had the sweet potato fries, which more than made up for the lack of meat. The onion rings served to contrast the fries, but not anything more than that.

    --------
Miscellaneous: Out of one possible star: one star.

For a really busy night (several big games on at once), the service was very friendly and patient. I can't even imagine not going crazy if I had to work in that environment.

This Bar & Grill is Great! Not only is it a fun place to hang out during the day and at night with excellent staff, it also has really (wish I could bold and italicize that) good food! The steak bites are one of my fav's, as well as the sweet potato fries and onion rings. They have a killer Memphis burger - everyone should try it! Their wraps are also killer... I can't say I have a single bad thing to eat here, ever.

Now drinks - I am all for good beers on tap, and they have some good one's, the watermelon wheat they have right now is good. I am sucker for their specialty drinks too though - and "The Siren" is excellent, who doesn't love a glowing ice cube in their drink?!

Go here, eat everything, and drink to your hearts content. It has a great atmosphere, with occasional late night group singing to the music, its fun.

Excellent downtown bar. It's a small place that gets very busy on the weekends. The food is above average for pub fare. The drinks are stiff and the portions are generous. Look for the updated beers on draft. This is rapidly becoming one of the best selections of beer in downtown. The bartenders know their stuff, you can order just about anything and they can make it.

The only downsides is that it's a small place and it gets crowded easily resulting in difficulty to get the bartenders attention on a busy night. I'd recommend ordering from a cocktail waitress on the patio.

    I hate being Debbie Downer
But I think you should read the online menu before going. Just so you know.
We stopped in to have dinner before a Sharks game, expecting a 'dinner' menu. There is so much hoopla online about this place that we were concerned that we might need reservations. . .UH NO. . .The menu is quite small, and basically, appetizers and a couple of sandwiches/burgers. Great if you want to stop in for drinks, and appetizers. People run in have a drink and then split.
With all the 'raves' online, and the impressive website, I expected a whole lot more. But, it's just a bar. . . that's pretty much it.  Not that there's anything wrong with what they're doing. I just needed to do more research.

NOTE: on the free appetizer for YELPERS. Do not 'check in' until you discuss with the server FIRST!. . . I checked in when we sat down, and she had absolutely no idea what to do about the free coupon that shows up on your smartphone. She knew all about it, but was clueless as to HOW to get the discount to the bill. It took FIVE times running the credit card before she manually scratched it off. . . I'm just waiting to see the whole amount show up on my card. . .or five bills for the same dinner.

A bar is a bar is a bar.

Seating outside is the way to go on this street if you can swing it and you don't mind the cigarette smokers polluting the air.

One must try the sweat garlic Buffalo chicken wings. They are worth giving this place a go. The rest of the menu is limited to burgers and appetizer's, etc.. They have a chili which is too spicy hot for most folks.

The server was pleasant and helpful.

Update: they've long discontinued their killer Happy Hour food menu. I don't know if I could draw enough sad faces. Not only was $3 the best deal in town for that food, but there's no more of that "Mac n Cheese" dreaminess. I can't afford their "real" prices for their food!! I understand they've gotta run a business, but geez. I have to say, the happy hour menu was the main draw. Otherwise, this is just another bar in a row of bars. =(
