San Jose, CA
Having been born and raised in Tahoe, Firesign is my number one priority whenever I get the chance to visit.
I've been here so many times, it's not even worth it to try and count.
I used to work at the beach across the street and about twice a week we would order lunch from Firesign. Along with the many breakfasts that I have either eaten there or done as take out.
My top choices:
Baker's Benedict (you will not miss the Canadian bacon at all!) - I get this almost 95% of the time
Kielbasa Scramble
Gouda Scramble
Veggie Burger
Chai Latte - mmmmm
The veggie home fries are also an amazing sub for their normal home fries if you want something a little more awesome.
They don't take reservations, so be prepared to wait if you get there during peak hours (9:30 - 12) on the weekends. You can always order things to go as well.
I can't wait to go home in about a month and make my pilgrimage to Firesign now! -

Yummy breakfast at a reasonable price! The atmosphere is cozy, service was prompt, and our waiter was friendly.
I highly recommend Fire Sign Cafe! -
Review from Frank G.
The Fire Sign Cafe is the epitome of a local breakfast spot. This was definitely another case of Yelp steering me in the right direction while on vacation. Win!
The food here is great. The Eggs Benedict were some of the best I've ever had; they were poached perfectly, and the Hollandaise sauce was fantastic. Spot-on home fries and great coffee rounded out the meal. Even my wife's grandmother -- who at 90+ years old doesn't eat much -- snapped up her French toast like one of us was going to try to steal it from her. (I plead the Fifth on whether or not one of us was planning to do so.)
The service was about as friendly as it gets, which fits with the vibe of the place. Our waitress, Marielle, was unbelievably chipper and attentive. The wait for a table is long at peak times, so they have a little cottage out back where you buy a cup of coffee -- nice touch!
At the risk of being charged with heresy, the only thing I didn't like was coffee cake. It was raspberry, but the "cake" seemed to make with whole wheat flour and was more like a quick bread than cake. I guess it's a California thing. This Jersey Boy wants a quarter-inch of cake with three inches of crumbly topping made with several pounds of butter when he orders a piece of coffee cake. It wasn't bad, but to me, it wasn't coffee cake.
We'll definitely return to the Fire Sign Cafe next time we're out in Tahoe. -

Every year we go to the West Shore lake tahoe, it is the best. Every year we go to The Fire Sign Cafe for breakfast. Everyone in the family loves this place. From the 4 year old grandson to grandma and grandpa. Don't dally though, this place gets really busy. I have not had a even a soso meal hear, everytime we think is better than the last.

Review from Nick G.
This is my go-to spot when in North Lake. I've been here a good number of times, and it was amazing every time. To be honest, I don't think I've ever had anything that was just okay either, it's always knock-my-socks-off amazing! And it's not just me either, this place is always packed, and at times that does mean a bit of a wait, but they're usually very quick at getting you seated.
So onto the specifics: the flavor is awesome, the portions are quite large - as in eat 'til your full and then taking home a box of leftovers home and getting full again off that!, and the price is very reasonable (especially considering the size of the portions). The staff is very nice, and so is the place. And lastly, they do have some pretty good drinks, they get a thumbs up from me on their bloody mary, and I'm very picky about those
Oh, one quick tip: I always recommend upgrading your potatoes to the "veggie potatoes," they're well worth it. -
Review from Kelly P.
This place is a ridiculously cute, cozy, and popular place for breakfast in North Lake. We had breakfast here on a beautifully sunny Sunday morning a few weeks ago and enjoyed the scene and the food. A TON of choices on the menu - I ordered the Spanish omelette which was good and cheesy and came with potatoes, which were ok. My parents had the benedicts and my hub had the greek omelette which both looked a-ok, not mind-blowing but pretty good.
Admittedly, my standard for brunch is skewed insanely high thanks to too many epic breakfasts at the Mission in San Diego, and pretty much anywhere in SF. And I probably should have gotten the coffee cake and the pancakes, 'cause both looked the best. But for a solid, cozy cute homemade Tahoe breakfast this is the place to be. Service is great too and makes you forget how long you waited for the first meal of the day. -

This was our last breakfast spot during our Tahoe stay. This place, along with Tahoe House Bakery and Gourmet, epitomize what local places should be -- proud yet friendly staff, delicious food, and inviting ambiance.
The waitstaff were so friendly and always checked in on us. Our coffees and waters were always full. The specialty muffins were delicious. And the breakfast -- hearty, well-executed, and delicious.
Definitely a repeat in my book when we return!!!! -

July 3, 2011: Another great visit. The place was packed, 45 minute wait and worth it. Coffee was outstanding, Rain Forest Blend. Also enjoyed the "Baker's Benedict" (Sausage patty instead of Canadian Bacon). Others in our group had the waffle (with the fresh Raspberry / Blueberry sauce), a scramble, regular Egg's Benedict, the fresh peach cobbler ( I snagged half of this and loved it), and a couple of us opted for the veggie potatoes (which include veggies and cheese as an upgrade) and they were great.
Well worth the commitment of time.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Alicia K.
I need to start by pointing out that I actually DISLIKE breakfast. It's just not my favorite meal. I'm a cereal and milk kind of girl, so eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. don't really do it for me.
Having said that, this place's breakfast is INCREDIBLE! Went with a group of 5 and not a single bite was less than amazing on any of our plates. I initially thought the prices were a bit high, but it was honestly a LOT of food and the quality justified the price. No question.
I had the BREAKFAST SANDWICH (egg, cheese, avacado) on wheat with a side salad. The breakfast sandwich was perfect and they didn't skimp on the avacado which made me so, so happy. Their house Miso dressing for their salads was also super tasty. Another guy at the table got the same thing, but with bacon. He LOVED it.
The hubby had the BAKER'S BENEDICT (eggs Benedict with sausage) and a side of breakfast potatoes. The eggs were perfect and the hollandaise sauce was the second best we've ever tried. (For the first best, you're going to have to get yourself to the Wave restaurant at Disney World's Contemporary Resort.) The sausage was juicy, but not too greasy, with a little kick that made it just awesome. Side of potatoes were pretty standard (good, but not spectacular... which really didn't matter b/c the rest of the meal was so outstanding).
Our friend got the KIELBASA SCRAMBLE with a side of toast. If you like kielbasa, this will make you so very, very happy. They did not skimp on the meat, and the portion was nice and large so he had no qualms about letting all of us try it. ;]
Final member of our group got the GREEK OMLET with feta, olives, and spinach. It was simply delicious -perfect amount of each ingredient, all super fresh and tasty. As a side, she had their FRESHLY BAKED CRANBERRY COFFEE CAKE which was amazingly NOT dry! Super moist, super crumbly, super yummy.
Their CHOCOLATE MILK comes out in this fancy-pants glass mug, topped with whipped cream - we're talking early morning heaven for chocolate lovers. Oh, and they have a FRESH SQUEEZED ORANGE JUICE that is almost $4 for this dinky little glass of it, but it's seriously so, SO good that my husband (all about good values) said it was so worth it, he would get it AGAIN.
From what other reviewers say, it looks like you just can't go wrong here. I know we'll be back next time we're in the Tahoe area! -

I've eaten breakfast here a couple of times and each experience was delicious. If you like breakfast and you're in Tahoe you need to stop by. Their pancakes and waffles are great which is petty much all I order since most other places' pancakes pale in comparison. Add an order of real maple syrup for the pancakes, a side of sausage and veggie potatoes to share and you have one filling and delicious meal.
The last time I went was on a Sunday morning which was busy and well worth the wait. Once we were seated and our order taken it wasn't to long before our food arrived. In the mean time my wife and I looked longingly at all the other great food that people around us ordered. -

Really there is only one thing to say about this place.
"TURKEY REUBEN"
Fresh, tasty and made with great ingredients. It was the best one I have had west of NYC. The place is fun and one of the better place I have been in the Tahoe area. Prices are reasonable (actually great for Tahoe) and the services is was great. -

Delicious breakfast! This is really what you should always expect at any cafe. Their coffee is soooo good (and organic!), the omelettes were top notch, and prices were on point! The service was friendly and concise.
They also offer to give you some coffee to go, take them up on this offer, their coffee is too good to pass up!
Can't beat Fire Sign for breakfast near the lake! -

After reading the glowing reviews, we had high hopes for this place. Service was great, but our meal was lackluster. My husband and I split a spinach-mushroom omelette, house potatoes and a buttermilk pancake. The latter arrived burnt on one side, so we sent it back. The replacement cake was great, but our entree was bland and tasteless. A big disappointment.

Once again, in love.... I keep going back to grab breakfast, sweet or savory, with salmon and many cheese options, veggie potatoes. Your meal is made YOUR way (aka for me - egg whites, light on the cheese, dry toast, whipped butter, etc.) I am a picky one and the server gets it right every time...I know...but I LOVE my breakfast.
best of all, although I've never had the guts to get it, bread option comes w/ homemade flavored coffeecake. I swear I will get it soon. Perfect cabin like setting with fireplace too!
You gotta get the the fruit n yogurt parfait as a desert after breakfast...it's simple but wonderful. -

Love Fire Sign. One of the best breakfast places in the world along with Kountry Kitchen on Kauai.
I always get the buckwheat banana pancakes and they are perfect. Bananas mashed in the batter and on top.
Make sure you get whatever daily baked special they have, either a coffeecake, scone, or muffin they are always so good.
Be prepared to wait if its summer time, but you can sit out back on the benches. They also have a few pots of iced tea sitting in the sun, delicious. -

I have lived 3 blocks from the FireSign for 6 years, and I still never tire of this delicious place- My favorite breakfast place anywhere I have traveled, bar none!
DO NOTE that there is always a wait on weekends, holidays, and most days during the summertime tourist season, so don't go in already starving. Instead, go in mentally prepared to put your name in, get a coffee from the bar, and enjoy the scenery out back with the newspaper while you wait :)
Healthy but hearty food, freshly made with a creative menu.
Make sure to choose the homebaked muffin/coffeecake of the day instead of toast!
You can pay a little extra and get "Veggie Potatoes" instead of regular potatoes, and you will not regret the upcharge! They add bellpeppers, green onions, mushrooms, and cover it in melty cheese... mmmmm!!! -

YUM!!!! Any breakfast spot that offers whole wheat pancakes is a must place for us to go and check out. Pancakes were delish!!! Cozy place to go for breakfast when its storming outside. Loved the food and a must order is their coffee cake. Fresh out the oven. Food portions are huge!
Next time in North Tahoe, we'll go back for some more breakfast food! -

Great for breakfast. The place was packed, but they seated us in a timely manner and took our order. There is a cute annex behind the building were you can wait and have coffee, it really makes it great when you have to wait. Service was great and friendly, even considering how busy they were. I also liked that they gave the option of 1/2 order on allot of the plates. Orange and grapefruit juice are made fresh daily.
On the recommendation of the reviews, I did order the veggie potatoes, they were great! Full of mushroom es, peppers and scallions. Everything was cooked well and their coffee was okay too.
Next time I will try their pancakes since you have a choice of buttermilk, buckwheat, and wheat. -
Review from Rachel H.
El Cerrito, CA
This is our favorite and only breakfast place when we're in Tahoe. It's a beautiful walk down the hill from our cabin.
They have amazing omelettes. I am partial the Greek and the Smoked Salmon omelettes. I always ask to sub fruit for my potatoes, and they give me a gorgeous fruit cup. My favorite part of the fruit cup is that they put thinly sliced strawberries and bananas together, stick to each other two by two, so you can have a little strawberry banana bite. It's the little things.
Now that I have a baby who eats real food but isn't big enough for his own meal, I have to order stuff he can share with me. This forces e to eat healthier, because i only want to feed him whole, wholesome foods, and I don't want to give him crazy mash ups of all sorts of yummy things when I'm trying to get him to experience yummy things as individuals. So this past summer, instead of my cheese-salmon-fat-delcious mound of egg heaven, I order a simple omelette with avocado, with wheat toast in place of my beloved english muffin, and fruit on the side. Baby H. loved it, and so did I.
They have these things here called "veggie potatoes". Oh, man. Get those.Listed in: Tahoe

My friends and I found this place serendipitously after making friend chit chat with a local who raved about this place. Fire Sign Cafe is by far the best place to dine before hitting the slope or after a long day at the snow. They serve anything from pancakes to eggs benedict (any style), salad and lunch entrees and the portions are huge! I've only been to this place twice but I've always walked out satisfied and want to go back for more.
Above all else, they serve mimosas! -

Camping is awesome! Sleeping in tents. Making smores by the campfire. Enjoying nature's beauty. I love it all. But the downside is the limited food option since there is no refrigeration.
We wanted a hearty meal before our hike. Fire Sign Café turned out to be a great recommendation by the campsite employees. It's a decent size café with a big outdoor patio. We sat outside, under the umbrellas that shielded us from the hot sun.
Joe's Special: Egg scramble with beef, spinach, mushroom, cheese and garlic. I wasn't that hungry, but I couldn't stop shoving this food down. It was tasty and I loved the balance of veggies with the meat and cheese. The home-fried potatoes were also delicious!
Hot Pastrami Sandwich: Pastrami with tomato, onion and cheese on rye bread. It wasn't impressed by its appearance or by my first bite. The pastrami felt bland and dry. But then I had my second bite and the tomato made all the difference. The sandwich was juicy and all the flavors came together.
Service was on and off. But it was busy that day. Portions were just a little too filling. Not necessarily a bad thing, but let's just say our hike was tougher than normal.Listed in: Brunch-O-rama!

We stumbled on this place while taking a drive around Lake Tahoe in June 2010. This was one of the greatest finds ever! Beautiful scenery, quaint decor, extremely clean bathroom; loved it before we even god to look at the menu. Once we did see the menu we were even more excited because they offer vegetarian versions of practically everything on their menu including many vegetarian specialties! Such a pleasant surprise for us because most restaurants do not seem to accommodate vegetarians when they include the standard fare.
It was soooo hard to made a decision with the variety offered but I ordered a vegetarian eggs Benedict with a fresh squeezed orange juice and my husband ordered a pepper and vegetable egg scramble with a fresh grapefruit juice. EVERYTHING was super fresh, homemade, and seasoned professionally. This place was the greatest restaurant I had been to in a long time. Most places will leave something to be desired atmosphere, service, food, etc. but this place had the whole shebang! My only tiny criticism is that the portions were just slightly too big; I wouldn't mind stuffing myself though being that the food is so perfect.
My husbands plate even came with a fresh baked, organic, banana muffin. You NEVER see detail and care for food at most places anymore.
I would go back to Lake Tahoe just to go to the Fire Sign Cafe again. Amazing! -

You know a place deserves 5 stars when you say to yourself as you are eating: i want to bring the person i love the most to this place for breakfast. See, I'm an awesome guy. i think about others before myself...someone marry me....=)
back to the food: how can you go wrong with an order of pecan waffle with sliced banana on top drizzled in their homemade blueberry house sauce? it's not only healthy but it is soOOoo good! I also ordered their fresh squeezed orange juice and is by far one of the freshest ojs i've had.
Their portions on dishes such as Joe's Special are worth praising. Fire Sign is very generous with their portions and does not disappoint you with bland flavors. it's super juicy and the flavors aren't overpowering at the same time!
best of all, their service was fantastic. though they were busy and it was super crowded at 9AM on tuesday, the server checked in few times and made sure i wasn't one of the many. i felt special. i felt loved here. there is so much love here. i love this place. i can't wait to take my future wife to lake tahoe and wake up in the morning to enjoy this fabulous breakfast.
i personally think it's slightly expensive for breakfast but when you are at lake tahoe, you are expected to pay few more dollars. But you are probably here for a vacation or a quick getaway....just spend few more bucks and soak in all the goods of lake tahoe. -

Ive been coming up to Tahoe with my family every year for 23 years and breakfast at Firesign has been a huge part of our vacation as long as I can remember.
Fire Sign is great for kids- I have fond memories of hot chocolate swirled high with thick whipped cream and big fluffy pancakes. It is even better for everyone else- from omlettes, to breakfast burritos, everything I have tried has been great. Its like comfort food without the greasy guilt after you eat :)
My favorite for a long time was the huevos rancheros a huge serving of perfectly cooked eggs, flavorful black beans, and all the usual toppings. My mom refuses to order anything but the veggie Benedict (a half order) and I'm pretty sure she ate this everyday for a full week one year.
Service is great, fresh squeezed juices are refreshing and this place gets 5 stars from me! -

We stopped here after a 5 mile morning hike. I got the ranch scramble and it was delicious. My husband got a reuben with clam chowder and had zero complaints. We may have been easy to please because we were ravenous after our morning exercise but we couldn't find one thing to complain about! Service was friendly and fast. We will definitely return in we visit again!

I can't believe I spent a whole month in Tahoe and didn't discover this place until the last week! I am a big breakfast fan, and this little cafe did not disappoint. We went four days in a row!
First off, the service was always friendly, even when I ordered takeout for breakfast later on the beach. When I added drinks to my order, the server placed them in a cup holder and even let me pour my desired amount of cream into my coffee before putting on the lid. Anyway, here's what I tried:
Coffeecakes and muffins:
1. Blueberry coffeecake. Yum!!! It was just sweet enough, moist, and full of blueberries. The topping was crispy and sweet. Just perfect.
2. Raspberry muffin. Also yum!!! Similar batter as the coffeecake, I suspect, but a little more tart with the raspberries.
3. Pineapple and coconut muffin. I love coconut, and this coffeecake was full of it. There's coconut in the middle and on the top, and the top part came out nicely toasted.
Eggs Benedicts:
1. Classic eggs benedict. Delicious! The hollandaise sauce was just right--tart yet not too sour, and very creamy. The eggs were cooked just right--the yolk was still runny. And the whole thing was just heaven.
2. Baker's benedict. A sausage patty instead of ham. Now, this was also delicious, but RICH. Next time, I think I would order just a half-size.
3. Cape and cod benedict. With smoked salmon and sauteed spinach. Delicious!
Other things:
We all loved the home fries. They were crispy yet fluffy on the inside, herby, seasoned well, and we just couldn't get enough of them.
I did try the veggie potatoes, with veggies, of course, and cheese on top, but it was just a bit much for me (but that's just my taste). I prefer the simplicity of the home fries.
The breakfast burritos are huge! They come with a delicious and fresh-tasting salsa.
Next summer, I'm making Fire Sign Cafe my go-to place for breakfast! Luckily, the cabin I rent is right around the corner. -

My friend told it to me like this... "If you want clean, healthy choices with a cool vibe go to Fire Sign, otherwise, spend a ton of money on 'view food' and go to Sunnyside." I thought that was great advise. We had just been hiking and trying to do the healthy thang...so, we jumped on into Fire Sign. Awesome! May I just say again AWESOME!!
The breakfast was delicious... but, the next door party had some sort of tofu salad that looked like I'd feel like a super model if I had eaten it. Instead we had the most Amazing Berry Cobbler ever! Oh and the pancakes are about four inches high...Mega Cakes. I vote YES!! Great outdoor patio as well. But, close early... I don't think they do dinner?Listed in: North Tahoe, home away from…

Respect where respect is due! This is a West Shore institution that is popular among locals (on weekdays at least) and out-of-town visitors alike for its relaxed atmosphere and generous portions. Almost anything on the menu is really good... I think I have had it all. Veggie Benedict. Gigantic Pancakes (don't bother ordering a full stack, you can't finish it). Huevos Rancheros. And good coffee. Get there early on a weekend morning or else you might as well wait until 1pm to show up.

Crystal-clear water, rising mountains in the distance, the smell of pine on the air... a bunch of dudes wearing Ed Hardy and tramp-stamped coeds wearing pink portable inner tubes.
Yeah, I didn't expect much from Lake Tahoe. After all, my visit to this point was (while beautiful) often interrupted by drunken teens, pretentious locals and 1st-time-camping college freshmen.
While Fire Sign was staffed by a mess of incompetent girls (the bus girl spilled water all over me and just said "oops" and left) and a slew of off-pitch-singing Mexican chefs (they're really loud), the food was quite good. I mean, it wasn't NYC good, but it was Nevada good.
The Eggs Benedict were perfect and the pancakes were very tasty, though lacking character. I do recommend the veggie potatoes as the melted cheese on top makes it the perfect side dish!
I hear that some visitors find it to be expensive. I guess Nevadans are really fucking cheap.

Fabulous food. I had the spinach salad, and they happily substituted seasoned tofu crumble for the chicken. Wonderful dressing. My friend had the fish sandwich and Manhattan clam chowder. So much food we needed to take the extra home in boxes.
Love this place. It's old Lake Tahoe at its best. I stop here whenever I'm traveling around the Lake on business. The line can extend outside during summer months, though, so be prepared for a wait. But the food is worth it. I only wish they were also open for dinner.
