R.I.P.
This place is absolutely excellent. They rice and beans go perfect together. Scratch that, the beans I could eat, all on their own. yum.
Their porkchops left me full with an appetite for my next meal there. I particularly enjoyed their daily specials. Although I never purchased a meal there at full price, as their daily specials sufficed, I eventually realized that the more expensive meal "the double," would easily suit two persons.
Although the french fries were mediocre, as they are not a BURGER AND FRIES kind of place, they substituted for other sides, like baked potatoes or rice/beans. I'm very particular about my baked potatoes, and I found that their baked potatoes were not hard and overcooked as you will often times find at more upscale restaurants. In fact I managed to make my own mashed potatoes on the fly with little to no effort.
I enjoyed the BBQ, Hot sauce AND Ketchup all at the convenience of an arms length. This made for interesting zing to each and every meal I would indulge in.
The staff was nice, particularly in the evening hours. They came around often for water refills from what I can remember.
What else? Their BBQ chix sandwhich is also very excellent as the bread is toasted, the chicken tastes fresh and the sauce is awesome and not too rich. Initially purchased one to shared, but quickly there after, ordered another as it was very tasty.
p.s. those photos blow. get a sweeter camera if you're going to take pics to back up your negative review.. plz k thx bai.
Yay, their bbq sauce is perfect! I LOVE me some bbq sauce, but often find that it is too spicy, or ... rich? I guess? Anyway, not here. My dude and I got a bbq chicken sandwich to split, and we ended up ordering another one because it was so delish. It's freakin' huge too.
I also hate fries (CRrRRaAAzzZYyYY) so I was happy that I could substitute them for BOILED POTATOES. I thought that was an odd side, but they are actually pretty good! And they're not fries! Amen!
The best roasted chickens I've ever had were in Lima, Peru and Oaxaca Mexico. They ingredients are slightly different but the methods are the same. The spicily marinated chicken will slow roast on a rotisserie in a tall glass or metal oven slowly dripping it's juices onto potatoes, onions and veggies. My best memory is sitting on a rooftop during the Day of The Dead festival, while watching a lunar eclipse and eating every last bit of a chicken feast.
I'm always surprised that this type of chicken never has really caught on here. The Fire Grill isn't quite the same as those places but the chicken is similiar with a garlicy tang and a juicy interior. The ribs are also really good with tender meat and a smoky flavor. The sides aren't as good. Instead of tasty roasted potatoes they have boiled which are kind of blah. The black beans are okay but overseasoned.
It's a good effort and a really good value. The super combo is a whole chicken 6 ribs and 2 sides for 26 bucks.
Absolute crap.
Remember that scene in Raising Arizona where H.I. is lying on the bottom bunk and his cell mate, on the top bunk, is telling him all about the things he was forced to eat in hard times... "...and when there was no meat, we ate fowl and when there was no fowl, we ate crawdad and when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand."
"You ate what," replies H.I. incredulously.
"We ate sand."
Or... a BBQ steak sandwich from Fire Grill BBQ. Which is like sand only more expensive and less satisfying.
3 roundish, floppy-gristle-steaklike meat product things. A thimble smear of a red-brown sauce purported to be "BBQ". And an unconscionable amount of slimey onions. Between two crusty shoe things. That's it. Apparently this qualifies as "Portuguese Style" BBQ.
See photos.... lose appetite. There, now you don't need to eat anything. Send 1/2 the money you would have spent to me.
I've only been twice, but it's definitely a nice change from all the thai food on Cap Hill. Doesn't quite compare to the traditional spanish food my grandmother makes, but it's definitely worth checking out.
Good food, friendly staff, decently priced.
I've eaten here twice - once when it first opened and then just yesterday on my way home after a long day.
The first time, I was underwhelmed by the food, thinking it okay, but pricey for the quality. Everything was in the $10+ range, which is a little much for the locale, considering it's it used to be a Magic Dragon and it's right next to Ali Baba, Pagliacci, and the Cyclo. The food itself was decent, but not amazing, but on the plus side, you did get a hell of a lot of it.
Second time I ate there, I went in for their new smaller-sized chicken sandwich that they added to the menu (well, the chalk board outside) and was pleasantly surprised. For $5, you get tasty, well-seasoned BBQ chicken on a generous half-baguette thing, and a mess of freshly-fried french fries.
With everyone being "blah blah blah economy" I liked the fact that they added this and other lower-priced menu items in addition to (I think) lowering their prices overall. If you go in for one of their more expensive meals, you can easily split it into two, which makes justifying the cost a bit easier.
I'll go back again, since the food was a bajillion times better than a McDonald's value meal and cheaper to boot.
ps. They have some insane $35 paella that I want to try, but nobody will go in on it with me. :(
From over a block away, this place smells amazing!
Super tasty well-seasoned steak and pork.
The food is made to order right in front of you.
Friendly staff.
Definitely a giant step above the nasty Magic Dragon (or more accurately, the Tragic Dragon) that used to reside in this space.
I hate to write this because the people are so nice, but the food isn't very good. I wouldn't say it's foul. I guess the fries were adequate. The sandwich was okay.
I came in open-minded, but left disappointed. The main problem was the schizophrenic menu--choose one thing and do it well instead of trying to be too many things. The service was friendly, but not really attentive enough for this new restaurant. As for the food, it was okay but not great: I had the pork and clams (odd combination but it somehow worked) and my husband had the pork sandwich (bland and disappointing). The ambiance didn't help: they had some bad "80s-90s-and today" music playing.
There was a Seinfeld episode where Jerry tried to offer some unsolicited professional advice to restaurateur Babu. Babu does everything Jerry suggests to save his unpopular restaurant, but the customers don't come.
We've all felt that way at one time or another .We've gone to a restaurant that we can tell is really good and deserves to stay open but for some reason the restaurant is not popular. We bemoan the inferior restaurants packed with ignorant customers. I had this feeling visiting Fire BBQ a new restaurant on Broadway in Capitol Hill.
I've noticed Fire BBQ on several occasions, but never felt the need to go inside. There are so many BBQ places after all, and none of them offer anything distinguishable from each other. As I was passing the restaurant a few days ago with my pizza slices from a nearby restaurant, I saw for the first time the word "Portuguese" hidden on the menu. I stopped. It's a Portuguese BBQ restaurant, I thought. Wow, I had some wonderful Portuguese BBQ in Montreal. Maybe it's the same.
The very next day my husband and I stopped by. I ordered the "small steak with egg" while my husband ordered the "1/2 BBQ combo" which included ribs and chicken. Both came with two small sides. Together we chose rice, vegetables and boiled potatoes. This food was fabulous. I mean astoundingly good. I'm sad that I'm moving from Capitol Hill and won't be able to frequent this place more often.
The steak was pan fried with a sunny-side-up egg on top. It was then doused in a lovely flavorful sauce. The BBQ plate was excellent also. The chicken was moist, tender and flavorful. The ribs were so good that they tasted as if they had been deep fried. I saw a woman spraying what looked to be an oil marinade on meat items roasting on a spit. This could explain the deep fried texture of the rib. The spice combinations are what make this BBQ unique. Admittedly, the sides were okay. I might get fries next time on the side which is actually how the BBQ was served in Montreal. I'm a little curious about the "shrimp bits with pork" item on the menu. I might try that next time.
Going back to Babu and Seinfeld, I think why doesn't the restaurant highlight the "Portuguese" aspect of its menu instead of the BBQ? If people see something exotic they might be more willing to go in. The restaurant certainly wasn't empty, but I'm not sure if the turnout could support the expenses of the restaurant. As an indicator of the difficulty the restaurant had finding its audience, there was a hand-written "cheeseburger with fries" addition on the menu. With food this good who wants a cheeseburger and fries? Plus I noticed dessert was misspelled on the menu, and let me tell you the dessert options were intriguing: chocolate mousse, rice pudding and more.
I hope Fire BBQ sticks around. It's a hell of place to get a fantastic meal.
I totally disagree with the negative reviews I read about this restaurant. I think it is refreshing to have some different food on the hill. Thai, Indian, and Pho get boring after a while. Prices are decent and the portions are huge. Most entrees allow you to choose a size....large or small. I ordered a small and could barely clear my plate...(and I have a huge appetite..trust me)!!! Friendly waiters....Fantastic food!! And they deliver...I'm in heaven!!!
