Considered the "fancy" BBQ in Kansas City, it still proves to be a great meal. She had the cheesy bake and I had the rack of ribs. We pretty much had about 15 minutes of absolute silence between us. No knife needed. The meat would literally fall right off the bone with the slightest of motion. The sides were more than generous. Slaw, corn bread, fries, it was all well above average. These pleasures are not without their costs though. Jack Stack can easily run a high bill, probably in the $50s. But, a trip to Kansas City is never complete without a good BBQ dinner. This is a great choice.

I do like this place alot and since i have to go back to kansas city for work multiple times i will undoubtedly be back. That said, i was slightly disappointed here. The restaurant seemed more upscale and expensive than i expected, but its on the plaza, so i guess that comes with the real estate. Although the menu didn't seem particularly inventive, the food was good (chicken one night, burnt ends the other) and the portions were, of course, massive. The service, however, wasn't that great. We had to ask for silverware and extra napkins, and this alone took almost the whole meal for them to bring. I never did get the extra sauce i asked for. Why are they so stingy with the sauce, and why is there not a bottle on the table to begin with like in most bbq joints?
Despite its flaws, this is still probably the best restaurant on the plaza (maybe in all of kansas city?), and definitely seemed to be the only one that isn't a national chain, so like i said i'll be back. Plus, the triple chocolate brownie might be the best dessert i've ever had.
This place is just plain good. It's the BBQ place you take granny when she comes to visit if you are afraid of taking her out to Bryant's or OK Joe's. It has the service ethic of a fancy restaurant.
It is not unusual to wait at the Freight House location but they have a very nice bar area with couches and a fire place that's almost preferable to the dining area.
You will pay for this experience but I have yet to eat unacceptable BBQ here. It is extremely consistent and delicious. For those who don;t need counter service, paper towels and wax paper, this will do very nicely.
I had a very good Porterhouse steak - though I must say, it is not a great steak by Chicago standards - but the BBQ stuff is what they do best. I love the Burnt Ends and the cole slaw! They have an awesome blue cheese dressing for the salads...
Service was good, though not exactly enthusiastic.
Warm, inviting, perfectly lit dining room.
Awesome location in The Plaza.
Everyone seems to rave about this place and Arthur Bryant's as being the best BBQ in Kansas City. If that is the case, then I am very disappointed at KC BBQ. I plan to still try Arthur Bryant's to give KC another chance. Anyway, my review:
We started off with the beef burnt ends. These were by far the best part of the meal. This seemed like cubed pieces of brisket and it was some of the best brisket that I've had -- extremely tender and juicy. I highly recommend it. We also had the rib combo platter - beef, baby back, and lamb (just had to try it). Again, the beef ribs were very good (maybe their specialty is beef). However, it was a bit on the smoky side. Hours later, I could still taste the smokiness in my mouth. The baby back ribs ($2 extra) were extremely disappointing. It was on the dry side and did not fall off the bone as exceptional baby back ribs should do. The lamb ribs were also a very dry and excessively burnt, but I've never had lamb ribs before so maybe that's normal. The cole slaw was probably the best cole slaw I've had outside of KFC. The creamy corn bake was all right -- as the waiter explained, it was like macaroni and cheese with corn instead of pasta. Also, we got to try all four of their sauces. They were really nothing special to be honest. The southwest style was interesting, but I can't say I liked it.
My lady took me here for my birthday last week and it was great. We had the fried mushrooms, which were HUGE and pretty good. They had a good horseradish sauce with them. Then we had the Caesar salad which was fresh and crisp and delicious. For out main course we shared the rack if Baby back Ribs, which came with fries, coleslaw and baked beans. The ribs were great. MUCH better than Gate's *yuck*. I don't like celery seed, so I wasn't too thrilled about the coleslaw, but I have never liked baked beans and I could have eaten them for days!
The waitress was fantastic (her name was Kim, I'll request her when we go back) and she brought me a COMPLIMENTARY brownie ala mode and It was AMAZING.
I highly recommend giving it a try!

Great great BBQ, and really good service. Nice enough place for a business lunch but also casual enough to meet friends before a night out. You must try the Cheesy Corn as a side to your meal - other than that, it doesn't really matter what you order because it's all good. They'll gladly bring you more BBQ sauce if you ask - so ask! Minus one star for the empoyee that I saw use the restroom and leave without washing his hands. Gross. I'm glad I was on my way out when I saw that.
