Real Art.

Good Art.

Meaningful Art.

Is supposed to be accessible to everyone.

It's not meant to be only seen by those who can "afford" to look at it.

It's meant to inspire.

It's meant to provoke.

It's meant to stir.

Any and all.

Fingerhut Gallery understands this concept and executes it well. They have harvested a welcoming art gallery which carries a variety of international artists as well as some beautiful Dr. Seuss prints.

Dr. Seuss' prints are worth the visit alone. His unique eye for art, humor, and life - can be viewed in some exceptional prints which amazingly enough, are so well done - that they even convey the original medium he used. The staff that work here are outstanding and it's evident that they truly love the gallery. One particular gallery staffer glowed as she talked about Dr. Seuss - the artist. She walked around with me, providing fascinating background and details on each of his pieces.

Despite me sporting my "budget" low-key wear (ie, old pants and sweatshirt) and carting an old back-pack she didn't judge, and instead brought the art to life - through her passion and her desire to inspire that same passion in me. A quality which is sadly rare in alot of the art galleries around. In fact, I went into a number of galleries nearby - and many of the staff barely looked up when I asked them questions about the art. They could have cared less that I was interested in hearing what they had to say.

I wish Fingerhut rotated their art regularly, but unfortunately they don't. That being said - it just means that you have plenty of time to stop in here on a gorgeous day and browse through their collection. Make sure to ask lots of questions. Art seems to take on a whole new meaning - the more you know about it :)

Something I've noticed since my recent relocation to the Bay Area: I write off art galleries as tourist traps. Might be some validity to that limited thought process, but if I'd let a few things go (like Yelp, perhaps) and get busy with my own palette of creative interests, no doubt I would make every attempt at having the results displayed where a diverse population in a mood to spend could take note. So there you have it.

I pass Fingerhut Gallery nearly every day as part of my commute ritual. While many artists are featured, there are a few whose works typically catch my eye:

Peter Max - I loved his work back when I was a wee lass, and now, as a not-so-wee-whatever-I-am.

Dr. Seuss - I believe there is something fundamentally wrong with you if you don't luv the Seuss. [Boring bit of trivia: In Junior High, I once drafted a poster for a class project depicting the duel between Hamlet and Laertes in somewhat-Seusian characters--of course, the teacher expressed concerns about me afterward...um, excuse me, but even THE BARD was having a bit of fun with these dramas. Dang, Lady!]

Grace Slick - while sometimes I think she's kinda OD-ing on the White Rabbit theme (you'll often find a tiny one in the corner of her work), it's smile-worthy stuff and one cannot do enough of that in this lifetime. What I particularly love is one of her portraits of Jerry Garcia that, for many months, was stationed at the front door, sorta staring out as I walked by on my way to the morning ferry. He kinda spoke to me, if you know what I mean...[Yes, Jerry, I AM still selling out to The Man. Well, obviously because I'm too damned old to get by as a groupie. And I totally forgot to become a trophy wife... 'Bummer' is right.]

So go check out some art, wherever you are.
Because it's not just about bronze racks. (TM mnypny b.)

For twelve years, Fingerhut Galleries has been exhibiting fine art from all over the world at it's Sausalito location.  Conveniently located right off the ferry pier on Bridgeway (the main shopping street of Sausalito), this gallery is always a key stop for the casual stroller and the serious art collector alike.  Even if you came to Sausalito not knowing that the gallery was there, you couldn't help but be drawn in by the beautiful artwork and (of course) their sparkly chandelier.  The fine art consultants there are all VERY knowledgeable and experienced in the art world and are always happy to show you around the gallery and assist you in building your own art collection.

The great thing about Fingerhut is that you will find many paintings, sculptures, and fine prints there that you won't find anywhere else.  The owner of the gallery has discover artists from all over the globe - China, Spain, Mexico, Russia, etc. - and exclusively represents and publishes limited edition serigraphs for many of these artists.  I would describe much of the work at the gallery as "contemporary" as opposed to "modern" though they do offer a number of works by the masters (Rembrandt, Dali, Picasso, Chagall, etc.) too.  They do not have the largest selection of master prints in the Bay Area but every single piece that they do have is a *gem* in pristine condition.

The gallery has connections with art dealers all over the world so don't hesitate to ask for that masterpiece you've always wanted -- they may be able to find it for you.  Also, there is a lot of work in the gallery that is not on display.  If you go there looking for a certain style or artist, be sure to ask one of the lovely art consultants.

Be sure to take the time to go up the stairs and check out the Rembrandt and Picasso etchings on the second floor and if you like Dr. Seuss, this gallery his artwork too!

Oh, and I almost forgot, come and see ME because I am one of those lovely fine art consultants that would love to show you around the gallery.  :)

This is a cool place to check out when in Sausalito.  Let me put my disclaimer up front.  My "art" collection consists of early-90s silkscreen posters by Frank Kozik and Coop.  You know, colorful, punk rock posters that mash mundane images from pop culture, turning them into crass, iconic images that make some people cringe.  My idea of art.

That said, I really enjoyed my visit to the Fingerhut Gallery, and plan on going back when I want to take my art collection to a new level.  My wife and I went there a few months back, and spent about half an hour browsing.  Actually, we had trouble leaving.  We kept noticing cool stuff.

This is not one of those snooty galleries which seem to have a goal of making people feel uncomfortable.  Erin R., the first reviewer, was working that day, and even though we might not have looked like prospective buyers, she made us feel comfortable.  In my humble opinion, that's what a good salesperson is supposed to do.  That makes you WANT to buy something.  She was very knowledgeable about the various artists, and was clearly into her job.

So if it's time to decorate your living space with interesting art, pay this place a visit.  They have items in a wide range of prices, from less expensive, to (what I would call) investment level stuff.
