with a giant tick** sucking my brains out at 2am on a friday night, the only thing my brain could process was two words:

dough and nuts.

oh sh*t doughnuts?!
with mariannes ice cream?
mind as well serve fresh brains on the side because i'm loving this.

for less than a dollah, you get this giant hunk of fried flour topped with ooey gooey chocolate glazed wholesome fattiness!

"i'll take two please!"

and that walk back to the mission and bay bus stop became so much better. tolerable. i wasn't afraid of anything. i'm eating donuts while this stuffed tick** is eating my head for goodness sakes.

**note**-if anyone's played/seen/know what the video game Half-Life 2 is, those brain sucker guys?? yeah. i have a hat where it looks like one of them brain suckers is eating the innards of your skull. delicious. just like these donuts. :]

Ferrell's has saved my life on multiple occasions. And by "saved my life," I mean that I wanted something to snack on when I was hanging out when ten other people at 2 in the morning. They have several kinds of donuts as well as Marianne's ice cream, and chocolate milk and lots of stuff to drink. They're open 24 hours a day and sometimes their middle of the night clerks seem a little spacey, but I can't blame them. Great place for a midnight snack!

OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY!!!

This place could serve dirt for all I care. It deserves three stars just for achieving what maybe 2-3 Restaurants could achieve in Santa Cruz, and that is not locking their doors when the moon is shining brightly over their heads.

Despite this city having numerous characteristics that point it to a College Town nothing is open late. Unlike other UC campuses like UCLA and UC Santa Barbara, where the restaurants, and delicious treats are open till 3am, Santa Cruz Restaurants abstain.

Being one the few places that stays open 24 hours a day actually gives this place an advantage. On late night Weekends, this place is relatively packed, full of college kids trying to quell their drunk/faded munchies.

I used to go here every weekend with my roommates after parties and pick up two boxes full of glazed, sprinkled, chocolate, cream filled and anything new they had on the counter donuts. We would finish one of the boxes that night and save the other for breakfast the next morning. It was the ultimate cure and friend in need when your body hates you the next morning.

Ok who cares that they are open 24 hours a day, are their Donuts any good? The Donuts here are nothing special, but they do have a good variety. Their cream filing donuts, as well as any chocolate ones would cheer anyone up on any day. They also can give you milk with your Donuts!!!
And don't forget ice cream!

Think of the Sacramento Kings...like 6 years ago..when they were good.... That's how good this place is! But Hopefully, unlike the Kings Now, they can continue their dedication to serving quality donuts and staying open 24 hours a day.

I went to go get a donut in the morning and still it was not fresh and still tasted like crap. Definitely try a new donut shop and probably the closet one is over the hill in San Jose unfortunately.

Just awesome donuts. My friends and I used to come here all the time in high school when we stayed at my friend's beach house in the summer.  It is such a Santa Cruz institution, filled all the time with locals, students and bums looking for free holes and leftovers.

All of them are good, especially when they are fresh and warm but I like the cream filled choco bars and the apple fritters plus a cold box of whole milk. Nothing like a donut and milk as a combo.

So if you are in the Cruz, drive down to Ferrell's and have a taste of old times that never change.

1978:   It seems like I spent most of my life here.

My friend Naomi was midnight donut chef and I'd come down and help/hang out.

Ed was always an accomodating gentleman who saw everything and said nothing (not surprising in a 24 hr donut shop!!)

Great jukebox, decent coffee, fabulous donuts and great ambiance.

Well - first the Cons: There usually seems to be a bum or two sitting here all night, although I've never had one beg so much as a cigarette from me.  The shop looks to be a little run down, and the coffee is barely drinkable...

But who goes to a 24 hour doughnut shop looking for a fine dining experience and expensive coffee?

The bottom line is that Ferrell's has incredibly delicious doughnuts, is open 24 hours, is incredibly cheap, and seems to be well run by the couple I often see there in the middle of the night.  This is one of my preferred excuses to drive over the Santa Cruz mountains.

*I. Hate. Ferrell's. There, I said it. This place is the pits--I tried to like it, I really did, but it keeps throwing me gutter balls. Okay, so it's open 24 hours and might have saved me from hypothermia. Yeah, it serves Marianne's ice cream. Yet somehow they take a delicious product and make it horribly wrong. Through a process of melting and refreezing, they bestow all of their ice cream with a chewy, plastic-like texture. But if that's what you're into, by all means give them FIVE STARS. It's like cow pus and chewing gum in one, ladies and gents!

*In addition to that, their hot beverages are lawsuit-material in temperature. I dread the mornings after Farrell's visitations--I wake up with a paper-thin layer of dead skin on the tip of my tongue from unavoidable third degree tea burns.

*Super double minus points: Their music selection SUCKS. If I wanted to listen to that damn Dido song, I'd do it while kicking a stool out from beneath my hanging body.

*Their donuts are 'aight, however (which garners one extra star from total craphood). Like most Americans, I turn a beautiful blind eye to my cholesterol levels. I'm also cheap as your grandpa, so I dig anything that costs under a dollar.

Donuts + icecream = awesome
Great hangout place to do some homework and eat your arteries away. Great selection of donuts and other pastries, good ice cream that is scooped generously.
Its such a simple place and works in every way.

Yes both locations get five stars. What I like about this location is you can have your cake AND eat it too..oh yes.. if eating a doughnut wasn't enough you can get your fix of Marianne's ice cream here...when they started doing that I almost flipped the **ck out and did not know what to do with myself...other than order doughnut holes and a pint of coffee ice cream. I have some great memories of this particular location, college friends, and them bringing in a bottle of red wine and vodka..which ended up with one of our friends creating a barrier of chairs and then crossing the border. PM me if you want the story...but be forewarned it is long and might be "you had to be there" type of stories.

They have a few video arcade games to keep you occupied and they have an ATM at the store.

Alright, let's have a little experiment, shall we? I will attempt a fully mathematical judgment of Ferrell's. Let us first judge the place solely on the basis of yummy donuts. + 4 stars

It's open 24-hours a day, and that is great for a night owl like me! + 2

The coffee is bordering on blasphemous in quality. - 2

The person who picks the music should be on the FBI's most wanted list for crimes against humanity. -3

I used to live within walking distance. + 1

It's frequented by drunken idiots who make me feel like I should be flunking out of college just because I was subjected to their conversation, even though I haven't had to put up with it in over 2 years. -3

Well, that brings us to a grand total of -1 Star. Seeing as I can't award that, Ferrell's can splash around gleefully in the muck at the bottom of the barrel with all the other 1-star reviews. Hooray!

Got nothing bad to say about this place. Good ice cream, decent donuts. I like the little game area on the side too.

I liked how the teenage clerk working got all confused when I asked for a Boston Cream Donut.  "No, sorry, we only have custard donuts."  It must be the East Coast/West Coast thing.  In terms of SF Bay Area counterparts, the donunt was more delicious than the same from Happy Donuts, but not nearly as good as a Kingpin donut ... wait, what am I saying?!  I don't even like donuts!  Ahhh!  Damn you 24 hour establishments!

It's open 24 hours. That's really about all you can say for the place. The coffee sucks and I hate donuts. I only really went here because my wife lived about a half mile away at the time and we could walk here when I occasionally needed some late night caffeine for studying existentialism and literature.
The trouble is that muzak and drunken college kids from spoiled Southern-Californian families are quite distracting when you're trying to write a paper on Gnosticism. It seems like just about every time we came here, we left in an hour or less because we were overwhelmed by the stupidity spewing from the mouths of fellow patrons. Which really threw a wrench into the late-night study plan. Too much coffee to sleep *and* nothing accomplished. Great.
I never visited this location once she moved out of that house. The Santa Cruz diner (which, as fate would have, was across the street from out next house) is a far superior place for all things late-night.

Ah I love their sugar doughnuts at 4am.  They have Marianne's Ice Cream too so that gives it 4 stars.  Friendly staff and quick service.

Walter and I lived in Santa Cruz together from 2002 to 2004.  We used to frequently visit this donut spot. Walter's favorite is their apple fritters and a small carton of whole milk to wash it all down.  Although we no longer live in the bay area, whenever we are in town, we still stop by and order the same thing.  It's one of those real nostalgic places that make your trip complete. There are a few different locations in Santa Cruz but this one is our absolute favorite. Even better, during the summer, I ca go to Ferrell's and order some of Marianne's famous ice cream.  Although they carry Marianne's all year, it's even better from Ferrell's when it's during the summer. The family who owns and runs this place is awesome. They are the only two working here a lot of the time. But, they're there. They are friendly. Again, because they're often the only 2 there, you sometimes have to be a lil more patient than usual.
