My husband and I are big fans of Ferrarese's! I can't pronounce it but I love their food! Before 3 years ago, I'd never been here until we visited family in Sonora and we've been lucky to get there when the crowd wasn't standing room only...but darn close to it. Their staff may be young but they're quick, helpful and comparable to many big name eateries.
I've tried the Leo, roast beef and the pastrami sandwiches as well as a few different sides and have no complaints. Their salads and iced tea are super fresh.
My husband's has been lucky enough to have eaten here on many occasions over the course of 10+ years. (lucky!) His absolute favorite is the pastrami sandwich which is loooooaaded with meat!!! I'm unsure how we got a bite into the sandwich but the extra strain on our jaws were totally worthwhile!
do your taste buds a favor...eat HERE.
Great food! The help is a bit rude at times, but they are very busy. It's worth it.
Great bread and sandwich. Got this to go so can't judge service.
Highly recommended. Hands down the best in Oakdale. Another visit to my mother-in-laws, been going over 20 years. Been to a few places to eat, never knew of this one till I did a search on Yelp, highly rated, and exceeds even that. Go, enjoy. Terrific service, quick, with a smile, helpful, small town generous, comfortable, everything you want. It's location is right, on the main drag in town, good parking lot. Loved it. And I added three new pictures.
After 15 years of living in the City of (In)Action as a kid, I was finally introduced to this gem after working in Oakdale for a couple years. Don't let this little wooden shack fool you - it's inside what counts. My first order was the Club Sandwich, which is usually a safe pick for a deli I'm visiting for the first time, but Ferrarese's is no first-timer and they knocked it out of the park.
If you pick a bad sandwich here then it's just not your day. Each sandwich comes with a side of pasta salad or a bag of chips. Don't be a goof, get the pasta salad. Plus they have pasta, salads and other dishes to choose from. My brother's favorite was the Italian -- great stuff. Try the Leo Camarillo -- a legend!
The only down part is their hours. Coming home to Riverbank from San Francisco I took Hwy 108 rather than Hwy 99 to specifically stop here for sandwiches, but the place was closed. A disappointing detour, but it was my bad. Check the hours before you go. If you're a veteran, then you should have the number saved in your phone or remembered so you can just call it in. Lesson learned.
Very good food and good portions. I hadn't been here in a few years but I'd have it again for sure. Big portions are a plus. Also, we brought 2 bottles of wine and they didn't charge a corkage. That saved us a few bucks! :-)
Ferrarese's is one of your best options for a meal when headed down the 108/120, and Oakdale is also the last sane place to buy gas if you're headed to Yosemite. If you're trying to make good time on your drive, keep their menu in the glove box and call your order in ahead of time.
Everything I've tried has been tasty and generously sized. Their menu is ample, but not overwhelming, and includes vegetarian options. The average price for a sandwich is $8 and includes a small side order of such.
I wish Ferrarese's was open on Sundays, so I could stop in on my way back home from the park...

These ladies don't fuck around. Try the spaghetti salad, and tell Meranda and Jenn I said hello.
WOW! I can't believe how over rated this place is. I have been there twice, both times the food was good, not great and the service lacked in so many ways. Last night when we arrived on a Wednesday night there was only 4 other tables taken. We had to get our own menus, get our own flatware. We ordered our drinks and it took over 10 minutes for them to arrive, when they finally arrived by the busboy who had been clearing tables he was holding the cup by the rim of the cup. yuck! It took over 45 minutes for our food to arrive, I ordered the Pesto Ravioli's EXCELLENT, my date had the roast beef Ortega sandwich which he said was good but the beef was over cooked. I am really big on service and this place was hurting. I think in one of my past lives I must have been a food health inspector..... because that plays a big part of me enjoying my food by making sure it doesn't come filled with the cooties.
ATTENTION TOURIST: THIS IS THE PLACE!!!
Take it from a kid that has been born and raised in Oakdale...this is the place you take your friends when they come from their hometown to visit.
Try the Leo Camirillo....it's amazing. The Chicken Dofino is my personal go -to favorite.
Matter of fact, throw a dart at the menu and you won't be let down. BEST EATS IN OAKDALE...bar-none.
Returning from Yosemite Natl. Park, I stopped in the first sizable town (pop. 20k) for lunch, and I'm incredibly glad that Yelp inspired me to seek out someplace unique rather than standard chain fare. Ferrarese Deli is perfectly described by Han Solo - "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts!" Non-descript from the highway, it turned out to be a gem inside.
I was stunned (and impressed) that the restaurant was FULL, with a waiting list, when I walked in at 2pm. Still, I was seated quickly, and my Dorfino chicken sandwich (served with side salad) was juicy and delicious, with just the right amount of charbroiling. I was in and out in about half an hour. I watched them absolutely STUFF the deli containers full when people ordered to-go from the deli case. Some taxidermy, beer signs, and historical photographs created a rustic décor that complements the dark heavy wood. Bonus points for displaying a U.S. flag that was signed and mailed to the owner by locals serving in Iraq.
All in all, an outstanding, convenient, and unassuming choice; it's exactly the type of place I think Yelp was designed to highlight. Of course, this review COULD be slightly biased by the fact that Ferrarese Deli appears to employ some of Oakdale's hottest women...
I lived in Oakdale all my life and 5 years ago I moved to San Diego. You wanna know what I miss more than my family or friends? My Leo Camarillo sandwich. Hot sourdough with TONS of juicy roast beef, dripping with melted cheese and loaded with the most delicious mushrooms I've ever had in my whole life. There is no recreating this bad boy either! The owner is very wise with her recipes! My cousin worked there for years and was never able to crack the code.
No matter what, when I go there I really feel like I'm home. It truly is as good as it gets.
There food is awesome!!
Everything is good, no complaints!!
This is the first restaurant in Oakdale that I have been really impressed with. It has a ton of great sounding sandwiches, salads, etc. on the menu and you can understand why it gets so busy. I had one of the daily specials, a hot roast beef open faced Ortega sandwich with mayo, cheese, and red onions slices. I really enjoyed the decor, it reminded me of Clearman's North Woods Inn back home.
If you live or work in the general vicinity of Oakdale, you have probably heard someone mention Ferrarese's, or have eaten there yourself.
My husband works right down the street from it and we go there for lunch as often as we get a chance.
It is a small, quaint little restaurant decorated as you would expect from an older restaurant in a cowboy town...full of old cowboy pictures, branded wood, and memorabilia.
The food is excellent and inventive. They have daily specials and I have never been disappointed by anything I have tried there. I love the pesto tortellini, and the pesto chicken sandwich while my husband almost always orders one of two things, the spaghetti and meat balls or the pastrami sandwich on white.
Either way, you really can't go wrong here. They offer so much. Be aware that they are only open for lunch and their busiest times are always at peak lunch hours, 12 Noon to about 1:30 p.m. If the parking lot is full, you probably won't get a seat for a while.
Outstanding- Made my Day
Once a year I come back from Mather and we always stop at Ferrarese's.
The old wooden walls are adorned with the most bizarre assortment of 20th century artifacts and pictures. The deli churns out some of the best sandwiches I've ever had and the service in impeccable. There's almost always a line on Saturdays.
Thank god for all that. Otherwise my girl friends would have stuck with their initial accusation that the only reason men stop here is for the never ending stream of 20-something blond waitresses.
I guess it's just a rule that all the hot women in Oakdale have to work at this restaurant. I wonder where all the hot guys in Oakdale work....wait, that's an oxymoron
Honestly, there's no better place to stop on your way to Yosemite.
This is a good place. Good food and lots of it. I like everything I've had here but they have a chicken sandwich that is especially good. Sometimes we get something to go and eat by the Knight's Ferry Bridge before heading back up the hill.
While following the footsteps of John Muir and many other travelers in hopes of catching a glimpse of half dome or stumbling across a doe prancing about within the meadows of yosemite, I came across a deli.
On the outside it looked like the kind of place where a seasoned 49er would stop to ease the tribulations of life with a good bar fight, or if he were so fortunate, the best chicken sandwich he would ever encounter. The brown shingled building was less than inviting and had a certain "local" personality to it. The saloon style doors spoke to me. I was skeptical at first, leery of what might ensue inside or lack there of, but I got over it quick as I saw a pair of happy customers
(yeah, definitely locals ) skipping through the doors as if they had the best kept secret.
The inside was somewhat dilapitated, leaving an idea that spitoons might be found discretely under the tables, but the food on the grill looked fresh. I grabbed a menu and was actually suprised to see items beyond just grilled cheese sandwiches and meatloaf lunch specials, but ribeye sandwiches with gorgonzola cheese and artichoke hearts? Had I been deceived about the rural boondocks of california and were they foodies like you and me? I didn't know what to think. Overwhelmed with the unlikely selection I decided to go with the sandwich that seemed most foreign to me; "The Chicken Dofino" (Dalfino? Dauphino? Heck I can't remember how to spell it).
The sandwich arrived, filling the air with the scent of sundried tomatoes and garlic. Cut on a bias, the foccacia looked moist and the cheese was running over the sides exposing the succulent chicken. The moment of truth was upon me. So far so good, but the thought of a spitoon ringing hadn't left my mind. My teeth sank into outer crust of what could not be explained as any sandwich, but more of a little piece of heaven.
This my friends is absolutely the best chicken sandwich I have ever had. Since my first visit I've been back 5 times, trying different things, all really good, but nothing as amazing as The Chicken Dofino.
If this sandwich doesn't put this place on the map as a destination for a meal, then you'd be cheating your taste buds of an epicurian revolution.
So next time you're on highway 120 on your way to summer camp or your next gold rush adventure, I sincerely suggest you stop by and eat a meal (or get a to-go sandwich). Honestly, its flippin good!

Let me add that this is, indeed, an old-California Saloon-type place; forboding from the outside, forgiving on the inside -- red-checkered table cloths, families and locals -- a bit unforgiving in appearance from the outside, a friendly trattoria on the inside. No spitoons, I prosmise!
I must say that this place, hands down, has the best -- the very, very best -- roast beef sandwich I have ever had. Ever. I dont' know why, but it was soooo good, I was almost ashamed to admit it. At first. But since I can't get there very easily, or very often, I think these folks deserve the 5 stars, just for the roast beef... Son-ray gives them 5 stars for everything else he's tried, but I've only tried the roast beef, and they've earned those 5 stars. Damn, I wish this place wasn't half between SF and Yosemite, because it deserves recognition for not only the best roast beef sandwich ever... as well as a bunch of yummy to go salads... and yes, the chicken dalfine (dauphine, dofine... god what is it called?!?!)) which I was able to sample 2 hours after son-ray left it in my car and I was driving back to Oakland. Wow!) but for being in god forsaken elsewhere, and being so noteable and they're being written up on Yelp!
Unfortunately, there's little opportunity to visit this precious nugget, unless you're on your way to the Gold Country, but you know, I've considered the 2.5 hour drive from Oaktown just to stop here.
I love this place so much. I grew up on sandwiches from here (well, as much as my parents would let me). Stopping by a few days ago on the way through to Yosemite, I was thrilled to see that it's still as great as it used to be. My recommendations: the hot BBQ beef sandwich (if it's your first time here); cold ham and cheese on a French roll with mayo, tomatoes, and cheddar; and cold roast beef on a French roll with mayo, mustard, cheddar, and marinated mushrooms. The Jello salad is a must as your side with any of those. The hours are sort of weird; if they'd been open during the return trip around 8:30 on a Sunday, we would've stopped by a second time.
I've heard of Ferrarese's for years. I've been told by umpteen people that I just had to eat there. Quite honestly, I thought it couldn't be that good. Boy was I wrong. I had an absolutely amazing sandwich. I tried the Leo mix (half beef, half pastrami) with pepper jack cheese. I am still savoring the taste. Delicious! As good as great sex! You get a side dish with your sandwich and I chose the macaroni salad. I'm pretty picky about macaroni salad. I generally don't like anyone's but my own but it looked pretty good so I thought I'd give it a go. It was great - not too much mayonnaise like so many and with a bit of crunch to it. My new mission is to work my way down the menu, one sandwich at a time.
I have been going here for years and never had a bad experience. The portions are big and you never have to wait too long to get your food. Gets really busy at dinner and it seems like the whole town goes there to eat at the same time. A good place to stop and get a meal if you are just passing through.
The Chicken Dofino sandwich is to die for. The pastrami is delish as well. Be prepared to WAIT for a table, as it can be super crowded. You might have to park on the street, as the lot is small. It's worth it though.
If you're lucky enough to drive by when they're open (they have weird hours, and I can't ever remember them), it's worth checking out. Enjoy the rustic decor of this country town favorite. The lasagna is one of the top sellers. If you order a large lasagna, it will usually be enough for lunch and dinner. They only give you 2 pieces of garlic bread (small slices), so order an additional side of garlic bread. The only reason I gave them 4 stars is because if they're busy, the service can be slow or absent. This is because the employees are mostly made up of high school students.
Large portions, good sandwiches, slow service when busy ( which is often). Good take out, but call 30 mins in advance
