I recently visited Felix's Fish Camp during my epic road trip, Kanan Across America (http://kananacrossamer...) and this place is absolutely great!
I was greeted by some of the friendliest waiting staff in the country, and my waitress walked me thru the many fish options, I honestly didn't know what Alabama-style food was or is, but she recommended some sort of fried fish, whose name I can't even remember, but it was DELICIOUS! Added a side of cheesy grits to ensure I felt really southern.
They'll recommend their famous crab chowder and order a cup because it does not disappoint! I finished my meal with a terrific slice of key lime pie.
The entire meal cost me around $30, which is more than I would normally care to spend for a late lunch, but the service was great, the atmosphere was fun, I loved the view of the water, and the food was VERY satisfying! :)
Probably the only restaurant in Mobile, Alabama worth mentioning. The staff here may be the most kindest of waiters and waitresses in the South.
- Order the Lobster Dip and the Crawfish Tails for your appetizers. Both in a style I have yet to try before. FRIED.
- The 1x1x1 - a trio of soups: gumbo, crab soup, and TURTLE soup. My favorite was the Turtle soup. Definitely a first in my book. Tasting Donatello was well worth it.
The rest of the food was OK. The best things to order in my opinion were those things I mentioned above. I had the catch of the day and my cohort had the southern Po'Boy. Again nothing to jump for joy for.
So if you want a restaurant with a friendly staff, a venue that overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and that is not that expensive, Felix's Fish Camp is the place to head to. If not? Then stick to the south's favorite fast food chain, Krystals.
I have to give it a thumbs up for convenience - the location is just a jump off of I-10 and the jump back on is just as easy. But as soon as we pulled up, BF and I started in on the funny comments - the place just screamed, "Bring in those fanny packs and cameras, tourists!" After all, it is situated right beside the Battleship tourist attraction.
They ask for your last name as they seat you and write it on the back of a gift-card holder to place on the table, which confused us because no one mentioned it after that. It served no purpose other than to waste at tree.
We ordered the lobster dip, taking the cue from our waitress. Nothing special...just a cheesy, greasy mess of a thousand calories with 3 teeny weeny lobster pieces. For our entrees, we each got the grilled flounder po-boy. I'd say it was decent, but a bit greasy...weird for grilled fish. The mac and cheese was tasty though, it reminded me of cafeteria style which I lurve. The green beans almondine - not so much - Bland City.
The oddest thing about our entire experience was how scripted everything seemed to be. From our waitress' spiel about the daily specials and her every move, to how every table's plates were set down in front of each patron at the exact same time. After a while, BF and I couldn't stop laughing at how bizarre it was. Everyone started staring at us as we laughing uncontrollably, but whatevs.
Then as our waitress was dropping off our check, we were imitating a funny skit from Mad TV (we easily entertain ourselves, as you can see) and mentioned it to her. What does she do? "Oh my gawd, that guy is SO ANNOYING," and scowls. Wow. Debbie Downer. Sorry we were having a good time and you WERE NOT!
On my last visit home I went to Felix's for a birthday celebration. It was delicious! I got the Grouper Meuniere (apparently Meuniere is French for "miller's wife"). It was pan seared in brown butter and served with Hollandaise sauce and Gulf Jumbo Lump Crab
Meat on top. The service was great and the atmosphere was very pleasant as well. I wish we had one here, I'd be a regular!
A fun, funky place packed full of people, not too expensive, with tasty food and friendly service. If you're passing through, stop here.
A late lunch on Friday requires a reservation, which for the size of the restaurant puzzled both of us. We settled for immediate seating at the bar, which felt no different to us than being in the restaurant. We had the raw oysters, which were served quickly and were quite yummy. The lobster bisque is definitely worth it a trip to this restaurant The fish tacos and crawfish quesadillas were excellent lunch fare and were served lickity-split.
Not over-priced, its right on the bay and better than most other seafood joints on the bay. All the seafood is really good, but if you love 'greens' like my wife and I, you've gotta get their greens as a side. Also, this place is very casual, so feel free to wear shorts, flip-flops and bring yr kids along.
This place is so awesome! From the outside it looks like a beat up old swampy cabin, but when you walk inside it is obvious it is everything but "beat up". The service was outstanding with the in sync food presentation...you will see what I mean when you go. We had a large group and there was not one single issue with the food or orders. It was delicious! My hubby had the fried sway (sp?) and it was KILLER! I had the greek style grouper and that too was delicious...but not as good as the sway I must say.
The place is very cool!!!!! Definitely a great place for a group gathering. After dinner the older folks left and we went to check out the live music scene in the bar area in the restaurant. It had a really cool chill funky vibe to it. Aside from the smoking, it was a really awesome place! I would give it 5 stars if it were smoke free =)
Felix's Fish Camp. With a name like that, how could we (me, my mom, and my brother) resist going? While the name and outside appearance may lead you to believe otherwise, Felix's is actually a fairly nice restaurant. We were surprised, in a good way. Probably the most expensive meal we had on our road trip as we tried to eat as cheaply as possible, but OH MY GOD. I had the grouper for my dinner and it was spectacular. Really. Probably right up there with the best meals I've had. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. We got there in time to watch the sunset. If you are ever in Mobile you have go to go to Felix's. It's too bad they are so far away from me or I would go there ALL the time.
They're not kidding when they say you "have" to try the crab soup--it lives up to all its hype. I also had the Shrimp with grits and was happy as a clam.
Call ahead if you would like a table by the window with a view of the water. They were all reserved when we got there.
The service was wonderful. They make you feel like a very welcomed guest, which is good if you are on the road and decide to stop here.
I think this is probably the most overrated restaurant in Mobile. Mobile is definitely a city full of overrated and overpriced restaurants but this one really takes the cake. The only good things I can say are that the food always arrives hot and that I really liked the grits. Other than that, it is overpriced and not worth the trouble!
Well - here's my update/upgrade. I had an opportunity a few weeks ago to host a very important business dinner at Felix's - about 15 people. Although we were extremely late booking for that many people and it was a VERY busy night for them (the parking lot was PACKED)....not only did they accommodate us - but my Assistant pleaded our case and asked for a window view overlooking downtown - she was very specific (SIDE NOTE: SHE IS THE BEST!!!). They said they didn't think that would be possible because they had so many reservations that night. But when we arrived (after finding a parking spot - can you believe that?) - a beautiful table was set in the southwest corner by the window for 15 people - I was thrilled!!!
Not only was the service as spectacular as I've come to expect - the food was great and they were more than gracious in their accommodation of vegetarians we had in the group - making numerous "off the menu" suggestions (yes - my Assistant gave them a heads up on that - like I said - she's the best!). I was MORE than impressed - and so were my visitors - who are world travelers. They truly enjoyed some of the "local flair" dishes and their descriptions on the menu. It was a nice ice breaking topic of discussion!
In business situations - I am almost as much about ambience and service as I am food. I EXPECT the food to be good when I'm paying the price for good food - but service and ambience is usually the wild card. Felix's gets a A+ in the service and ambience category. The food is good - its very good. But I'm REALLY picky about my seafood. I like my own gumbo, jambalaya and bar-b-que shrimp the best. I think all good southern cooks do - why else would we keep making the same thing?
Felix's is an "upscale" seafood restuarant - not one of our local "dives" and not Granny's (OR MY) kitchen - but they are the best in Mobile at what they do - elegant seafood in an phenomenal setting. Good place for a special date, anniversary, business dinner - anything "special".
If you're visiting Downtown Mobile and you have two meals to eat - I would say eat both of them on the Causeway if you really want the flavor of Mobile. Go to the Original Oyster House for lunch (around 11AM - skip breakfast) - have a poboy or a "basket" - basic good fried Mobile seafood and most menu items are fresh and local. Ask about fresh/non frozen if you have any doubt about a specific item - they will tell you - they pride themselves on serving fresh Gulf seafood.
Then eat dinner at Felix's (around 730PM) and enjoy the pleasure of some of our more elegant, classic southern seafood culinary history - READ THE MENU. Make reservations and ask for a table by the window. Yes - that's seafood twice in one day - but the spectrum of flavors and style will blow you away. Heck - I eat seafood most meals each week - its all about the preparation for variation.
Now......if you're willing to venture further away from Downtown and want some recommendations..................................t hat's another story.

MMm so yummy =) As an appetizer, I had the One-One-One which was a little demitasse cup of gumbo, crab soup, and turtle soup! The gumbo and crab soup were okay, not the best I've had. The turtle soup was different! I never imagined that turtle would have the texture of beef. For the entree I had the Shrimp and Crab Au Gratin. It comes out with a little roll. Delicious!!!! I can't wait to go again =) After my friend and I were finished with our lunch, the waiter brought up little dessert shots. I got the tiramisu, which was just the perfect portion. I'm glad my friend brough me because it was good, but I can't make it a habit. I'm a college student!
We stumbled upon this place on a recent Florida fishing trip for the Easter weekend 2009. I wanted to review this place, because it was awesome. The service was great, the food was unbelievable. There were (4) of us dining and everyone had something different and everyone was very pleased. The atmosphere was laid back, but very nice. The decor was very fitting. I would highly recommend this establishment. We had been deep sea fishing all day and we were dressed very slack and we were never treated any different from the ones that were well dressed. I hope I get back this way again sometime, because it was very good.
Holy cow this is some good seafood. They weren't kidding - TRY THE CRAB SOUP! We went for lunch and we ordered a fried crawfish tail po' boy, jambalaya, and seared ahi tuna and they were all some of the best we've had in quite some time. Next time I'm in the area I will do whatever it takes to go eat here again. The view of the bay is breathtaking and the service was above and beyond anything I expected. Their prices are very reasonable as well.
Felix's is a well-known restaurant situated close to the border of Mississippi, in Alabama.
Walking up the ramp leading to the entrance of the restaurant, I was reminded of walking on ship planks, as nets with rustic fishing decor hung along the railings overhead.
So dimly lit is the interior of the restaurant that my friend and I had to pass around the candle in the middle of the table just so we could read the menu!
That being said, the food here was wonderful. For appetizers, my friend and I both had the Camp Salad, which included hearts of palm and artichoke hearts and had a zesty, light vinagrette dressing. Feeling somewhat adventurous, and admittedly "Southern" by that point, we also opted to try the turtle soup. Now, keep in mind, I rarely try unusual things and certainly not something made out of adorable creatures, but I figured I was only going to be in Alabama once, so I may as well give it a taste. In all honesty, the soup was delicious. The meat was soft and actually tasted like beef, and the spices and vegetables flavored the meat very well. Though, I could only muster eating about three spoonfulls before I began thinking about my poor little childhood pet, Rocky, the sweetest box turtle ever...and had to put the spoon down. Still, chalk one up for local delicacies!
For entrees, my friend Dennis ordered the filet, which was cooked medium-well (tender and juicy), with a generous helping of crab meat topping the steak. I, on the other hand, tried the cajun chicken which was served with only a few vegetables, but was flavorful and had just the right amount of spice. I've also heard that the crab soup is a popular dish to order, and is so full of ingredients that it can qualify as a full meal!
Completely stuffed but pleasantly coerced by the waiter, we also ordered dessert. I have never liked key lime pie, but even I was surprisingly swayed by their signature dessert. Rich and smooth, sweet and tangy, the pie filling coupled with the buttery crust perfectly satisfied my pallette.
The entrees at Felix's tend to range between $10-$25, which is more than reasonable for the quality of food. No wonder this place was bustling even at 10pm!
Easily the best and most well-known seafood restaurant on the causeway, Felix's is a must-stop in Mobile. The outside is a little misleading, as the building is covered in rust... but it is purely just for the effect! The inside is elegant and best described as "upscale seafood." Every table is lit by candle and is a wonderful place for dates.
As far as attire goes, I've worn everything from shorts to a dress when going there. It really does not matter, though you might look out of place at night with shorts and a t-shirt.
The place is ALWAYS busy it seems and I've been there when the wait was two hours once. This is the kind of place where you definitely want to make reservations.
The food is excellent and you really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. I wouldn't order any of the fried stuff though, just because that is something you can get anywhere and is nothing special. I would suggest the crap soup for the appetizer (it is seriously the best) and the whitefish meuniere or almondine for the entree (grouper tastes fishier IMO.) The lobster dip appetizer is also very good but the portion is small. For dessert, I'd suggest the mocha ice cream pie... you may want to split it because all the pie slices are big!
I only have good things to say about the wait staff. Every time I've been (which has been tons) they were always extremely nice and helpful. The few times I had issues with the food the manager has always come out personally, apologized, and refunded the amount. Very professional!
The view is also unbelievable and you can see the Mobile skyline is you sit near one of the windows on the right side of the restaurant. Absolutely beautiful.
They also have a bar where you can wait and order a drink/appetizer prior to being seated. There is often a live band performing there on the weekends too!
The food is kind of pricey, most entrees are in the 11-20 range. For two people, you'll easily spend $50. My fiance and I normally split the entree and they are always really nice about it. They'll give us two salads, two pieces of bread, etc, even though we split it. Trust me, the portions are plenty big.
I can't say nice enough things about this place, you just have to try it :]
We heard about Felix's from a co-worker so on a weekend we rode over to Mobile, 70 miles, to try it and it was def worth the drive. The view is very enjoyable and the food is excellent. The crab soup is the best thing on the menu. We have only been twice, so there are lots of things to try. We dine at rather odd times of the day, usually late afternoon and there is still a wait at this place.
Excellent, That about sum's It up. We went on vacation In August. We were going to Pensacola, Ala, when we stopped at Felix's for an excellent dinner. The service was excellent. Even the manager asked us how we were do in. I loved the crab soup, Excellent. Also If you like Felix's, You must try Flounder's In Pensacola. It's Excellent also. We had a table right In front of the beach. The service was Excellent also.
