One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
If you like books, GO TO FELDMAN'S. This place is huge, cheap, and well-stocked: there's non-fiction from all fields, fine literature, and even crappy pulp fiction. If you're in the market to make space on your shelves for some new prizes, you can also sell and trade here.
You'll find a garden between the two halves of the store, which is a great place to sit down and enjoy a book or figure out whether or not you want to buy something. The place as a whole still has a super-cozy family-owned feel, as the owner and his daughter or wife (I think) can often be found behind the register together. He'll even let the little one check you out, and she's quite good at it.
Great assortment of books, I found what I needed here. You can also just lounge around and read, to decide what you are going to buy. It's a welcoming place. Prices are fair.
I don't come to Menlo Park very often as I thought that Feldman's used to be around the corner and maybe where the flower shop is currently located. In any event, Feldman's is a great bookstore and is just a short and rewarding walk from the holy trinity (BBC, Barrone, and Kepler's). In some ways it's a more intimate version of Bell's in Palo Alto, with a nice garden as a bonus. The wonderful smell of books draws you in and a great selection and the literary knowledge and fair prices within keeps you there for awhile.
An incredibly fun and charming way to spend a few hours--I especially liked their selection of local California history. An earlier reviewer commented on the smell, but mmm, I love that smell. Old books forever!
This is a bookstore that I frequent a lot. The book selection is good; the staff a bit cold.
I buy A LOT of used, good condition cookbooks here. Often I find ones that are under $10 and were published within the last 5 years.
I also buy quality children's books here for my nephew/niece. I love to share my childhood memories with them by reading the, older books I enjoyed in my youth.
I'm a fan of hole-in-the-wall used bookstores, and this is the best one I've found on the peninsula.
I've found quite a few books about trains here. Books about railroads are usually pretty expensive, even used, but they seem pretty reasonable here.
As others have noticed, the staff isn't very chatty, but they seem nice enough. I pretty much want to be left alone when I'm book shopping, anyway!
I absolutely freaking LOVE books. They make me happy on a bad day, without fail. An entire wall of my room, literally floor to ceiling and wall to wall, is dedicated to books, and truthfully if I needed something to read every day for the rest of my life, I probably already have enough books to cover me. But I've been a serious bibliophile from a very young age (my brother taught me to read "Green Eggs and Ham" and I haven't been without a book since), and naturally my interests change. I always have to be reading about new things! I just want to know everything there is to know :) So I have acquired this mess of books, old and new, dusty or crisp and clean, the assortment of which titles chronicles my random interests from birth to present. For example, there's "Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts" which I purchased in 10th grade when I suddenly became very interested in martial arts (and also had a huge crush on my karate sensei), or the old beat up copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales which I've had since I was a little girl (although this one is still fun to pick up sometimes...I don't think I'll ever stop loving fairy tales). These days my books of choice are generally about spirituality (anything Deepak Chopra), religion (the bible, the Bhagavad Gita, the Complete Idiot's Guide to Buddhism, 101 Ways to Meditate, etc.), psychology (mostly textbooks) or GRE prep (eww) but basically you get the idea, I love books and I love to read!! I am rarely without a book. Seriously, if you know me, ask next time you see me, I probably have at least two books wedged into my purse somehow, just in case there's downtime wherever I happen to be and I get a chance to read.
ANYHOW, my main point being, if the above description sounds like you, you will absolutely love Feldman's books. They have a huge, rich, beautiful dark and dusty collection of tons and tons of books, some bestsellers and some classic, all are reasonably priced. If you are the sort of person who not only loves to read, but also just simply loves BOOKS (there's a difference!), you will want to spend at least an hour in here. The guy who runs the store is so nice, won't really bother with you unless you need help with something, otherwise he is content to sit there and let you browse. This is one of the few used bookstores I know of which rivals Moe's Books on Telegraph in Berkeley. Definitely worth a browse, you'll find something you like :)
Long over due for a review... we love this place. It's close to the train station, Kinko's, and Koma Sushi - and has decent parking behind the shop. Of course we appreciate the front man who is so sweet. Especially appreciate the two room set-up separated by the garden. The prices are more than fair.
I visited this bookstore recently and I loved it! Great for all book lovers. I am fairly new to MP area and I am happy to discover places like this.
Fun place to browse but smells weird and has high prices.
The smell was just too much for me, and the books aren't cheap enough to justify the smell. I know old books have a smell - but they don't have to smell this strongly. If you just want to wander around and discover weird stuff though, this is a good place to go. There is a cute little garden with benches dividing the two buildings of the store, which is probably a lovely place to hang out in the summertime.
As noted by others, staff is distant - which is exactly what most bibliophiles like anyways.
I love books and I was excited to discover this highly rated store on Yelp. However, due to the prices + smell I won't be back. The only situation I might return in is if I need an out of print book immediately, or it is unavailable online. Feldman Books clearly has a following, but personally I'll stick to the library, Amazon, and random thrift sales.
Oh man. If you like books, then just...go here. It is roughly everything one would want in a used bookstore.
I come here with my gramps, because he simply love's digging through original editions and stacks of dusty rarities. I do too, but I have to let him think it's a chore so that he'll pay for my picks. Sometime's I think this store got stuck in time (why do I find so many 1970s Scribner?), and it's definitely an undertrafficked place. That mean's you may be able to find that copy that would have been snapped up elsewhere.
Right down the street from Kepler's, which I've reviewed elsewhere, you'll find this gem of a used book store. They have an outstanding sci-fi/fantasy section in the back room, and all sorts of other little treats. The place is a lot bigger than it looks, with a courtyard and a whole other room full of books behind it. If you are looking for that magical feeling that a used book store can give you, this is your place. I would some times stop in here on my way home from work just to browse. I always left with a smile, and usually a great book.
I stopped into Feldman's Books today in search of a gift for a literary themed bridal shower. I couldn't have dreamed up a better experience. After receiving top-notch guidance on the store's immediately visible selections, I was granted entry into the very back room to view items of particular value and interest. Scanning the shelves, I discovered the perfect gift for my friend. If you have a hankering for a book but can't quite put your finger on what you seek, I recommend spending some time perusing the shelves at Feldman's!
Whether you are looking for an antiquarian treasure or just a copy of a book that is no longer in print, this is a great stop. You'll find lots of great classics and fantastic originals hiding in the shelves here. Allow yourself some time to browse around and hunt for thing you may not even know you are looking for.
fantastic book store. lots of pretty old books. plenty of paperbacks under $3 - but you have to go all the way to the back "room" which is actually a separate building in the back! super great bookstore!
One of the best-kept secrets on the Peninsula, this innocuous used book store on El Camino Real a couple of blocks from the Caltrain Station has rooms and room of used books--stacks and stacks of old dusty volumes and obscure gems in many languages. Don't come in here if you're in a hurry. Last time, I spent three hours in Feldman's. And I don't regret a minute of it.
Feldman's reminds me of Moe's, on Telegraph Ave in Berkeley. What more do I need to say?
I love this bookstore! You can find all kinds of great books. The owner seems very quiet at first, but if you talk to him he's very friendly and knowlegeable. And if you're the kind of shopper who wants to left alone (like me) he won't approach you until you come to him first.
