Feel real happy when you arrive on a perfect sunny morning.
Feel real uncomfortable sitting on a converted bongo drum on the sidewalk because there aren't any real chairs available.
Feel real annoyed by the guilt-driven "sliding scale" pricing scheme.
Feel real bored while waiting a real long time for your waiter.
Feel real stoned by the residue seeping out of your waiter's white boy dread locks.
Feel real angry waiting nearly an hour for your food.
Feel real disappointed that the greens and potato pancakes taste like a pile of nothing topped with nutritional yeast.
Feel real ripped off after spending over ten bucks for a plate full of nothing.
    Feel real hungry afterwards.
Feel real glad when you finally leave.

This is what my college experience tastes like. I took one bite of my tofu scramble and thought "I am 19 again! Life is full of wonder! Let's listen to the Get Up Kids while I talk to my Canadian boyfriend! Woo!".

When I lived and ate in a co-op, I would invite my non co-oper friends over to have meals with me because I was 19 and so excited about the 8 million ways there are of preparing kale (Oh, I am lying, there is only one way, I just ate it every single day). Some of them were into it and found it fun and novel; our home made bread and apple cider and endless stir fries but some of them just could not hang.  They would look at me and think: why is there curry powder on everything? Why are there bottles of Bragg's Liquid Aminos everywhere? Why are there tortilla chips at every single meal? What the fuck is tempeh (to be honest, I still don't really know)?

Those are the same people who will likely hate Feel Real and their slower pace and clearly non-assembly line food.   And I don't really understand - you're at the end of the line, baby. Why are you rushing? Where are you going? Relax, have some tea, have some tofu and come with people you actually like so you can have a nice, long conversation.  If you are SO BUSY AND IMPORTANT that you can't take time out to have a nice meal that was actually prepared for you, the 7-11 is always available. I hear they're super quick.

PS- They have Bragg's Liquid Aminos here! But no carob Edensoy. That shit was disgusting.

    I am a fish eater.
    So,
I've been thinking that vegan is such a Streisand,
    But,
    this place is cool.

I swear I did not know what I was eatin', but,
I ordered some shit like half mash potato mixed with mushrooms, beans and make it look like a cake, 4"x4" and 1" thick,
and smokey flavored gravy on it.

    I useally dislike gravy.
I don't even put over turkey and mashed potato.
    Call me crazy but,
I'd rather put soy sauce over the turkey.
I've never done that front of peoples at the Tanksgiving dinner table that I was invited.
    But,
I always get the craving feeling for soy sauce right after every single Thanksgiving dinner I was invited.

but I did not mind this one at all.
And great fresh vegitables, nicely cooked,
    Not over cooked.
I think this mellow chef knows what he is doing.

    Fxxxin' A man!
    Dude, it's a good shit !

Like, totally, this has got to be the most laid back restaurant I've ever been to, man!  (Is the fact that they opened on 4/20 merely a coincidence?)

The ambience is created to make you feel like you're maxin' and relaxin' at home. It's noticeable from the get-go, as there isn't even a sign out front to alert passerbys that the building is actually a dining establishment.  I even found the bathroom to resemble the kind you would find in a home; take your time here too, if you want.  There's a stack of National Geographic magazines to read while you're on the throne. Everything is vegan and organic, right down to the hand soap in the bathroom.

Keeping in mind the extremely casual atmosphere, I can't stress enough that you come here with the knowledge that your food will take awhile.  (I didn't know it could take nearly 45 minutes to make a small tempeh sandwich!)  I've seen people leave after coming in to dine with the expectation that their food would be delivered like a typical restaurant.  Yet, it's so obvious that this restaurant is highly atypical.

The location is just blocks from the ocean, a perfect place to refuel, before or after hitting the beach.

Your total is given to you in the amount of a range; you choose how much you want to pay. To me, their whole concept for a cafe is ingenious. The staff is extremely friendly and genuine.  I have no qualms about paying at the highest end of the range each time.

It's cash only and a take-out menu is available (though you might want to call ahead of time, like, WAY ahead of time to be sure it's ready when you want it). Business is generated by word-of-mouth, so pass the word along. Fer sure, dude.

Feel Real is on the short list of reasonably inexpensive San Francisco restaurants which serve a "Health Food" believer's version of 10 Hail Marys.

I'll stop by whenever I'm in the Outer Sunset for some carrot apple ginger juice (with a heavy ginger kick), "homegrown" grain/veggie patty w/kale & veggie sauce. The Studio One and Roots Radics that Tim and Christina play on the stereo is an added bonus.

I would eat here every day if I didn't live 8 miles away.

[In 1953, Sunset Toggery was located in this space.]

If only there was a cafe like this in the mission!

ok, these guys are total homies and the place has an incredible vibe to it - kind of like being in Bend Oregon or something. The food is wholesome and amazing.

I had a homemade veggie burger that had chunks of roasted beets and carrots in it over rice with dulce which they served in a lovely green ceramic bowl, and for dessert - strawberry cake with strawberry sauce. mmmm! Not only that, after eating there I had glow --- it's good to eat food made by people that are happy and love what they do.

lovely vegan organic place. The first time I went my friends and I felt like we were in Amsterdam. This effect was so overwhelming that we all felt like smoking a joint (which I hadn't done in quite some time) -- so I guess that makes it a gateway drug...

anyway! we had delicious healthy, happy food. The brothers who run the place are very sweet and work very hard. I recommend the Earthy Vibes with the Tempeh and to drink: Kave tea (not delicious tea, but very relaxing). Very nice folks and nice energy all around.

downsides: peculiar seating arrangement along the wall feels unfriendly and not cozy although they did just install some windows which is an improvement.

many of their drinks aren't as tasty as they could be. I've practiced vegan cooking in the past (and studied herbology), so I know they could make nicer drinks. Maybe I need to try more.

    lots of love to them...

One word says it all about Feel Real Cafe:  Irie
It's not just a vegan restaurant, it's not just organic, it's an experience.
Tim is the salad/pasta/hand-mixing genius. He won't (or can't) even tell you what he puts into his salads, each one being a standalone artistic creation.
Don't expect to be in and out of there, you're gonna have to relax for once and hang out for the food to make it's way to you.  Pretty soon, you'll be smiling at everyone and making friends. By then you'll have gotten your savory soba & veggies bowl, and you'll have forgotten why you ever rushed for anything.

    Atomosphere:

Feel Real so perfectly embodies the S.F. vibe that it's hard to believe a place like this actually exists.  The walls are swathed in warm colors and funky designs; reggae and funk pulse throughout the restaurant while kitchen workers sing along, and plants hang wherever there's extra room.

    Food:

I was really impressed by their reinvention of the veggie burger: not a patty at all, but a sloppy joe-like mixture topped with mixed greens, red onions, vegan garlic aoli and served on a toasted focaccia roll.  Their basic salad is artfully presented and really made memorable by the addition of chewey date pieces, though the dressing could have used a little more pop.  The tempeh sandwich was a bit too savory for my taste; I was hoping for something more smoky than briny.  A gigantic oatmeal-raisin cookie made the perfect take-home dessert: sweet, soft, rich (but healthy!)...need I say more?

    Service:

Feel Real's workers project the most remarkable serenity and radiance; you can tell that their blend of wholesome diet and take-it-easy lifestyle make all the difference in maintaining a positive outlook.  They demonstrate generosity in everything from their flexible pricing policy to their willingness to postpone daily "siestas" so that diners may leisurely finish their meals.

I may be shiny on the outside, but I'm "crunchy" on the inside so I LOVED this organic vegan eatery a few blocks from Ocean Beach.  The food was fresh and delicious (especially the vegan burger - YUM!!),  but the vibe was also warm and welcoming.  The hippie-rasta-chic decor was a fun mix of ethnic-knacks, tribal murals, and nature brought indoors.  Expensive, but so is eating pesticide covered veggies.

PS - Whatever you do, try the mostest of moist chocolate cake for dessert - Incredible!

On a day when you have all the time in the world, it is a nice place to stop by.
This funky small caf near the ocean is some how relaxing.
Usually there's three to four hippie looking male staff working.
All of their food makes you feel healthy and cleansed.
I love their temphe sandwich, great hearty soups, and the salad which you have to decide the value.
It's so yummy! And it takes about 20-30min whenever I order food from them, but I don't mind waiting while I hang out with my friends.
Their juices made at the sister store near by gives you the zen feeling too.
Good energy, good people and good food. I like this place.

Interesting to say the freakin least.

I enjoyed my carrot juice. Their water was questionable. The veggie burger was interesting and pretty dang tasty (would have made a great veggie loaf). The staff was nice..very..um..laid back (service took quite a bit of time - who the fuck am I kidding - that shit took forever). The sliding scale threw us for a loop (a guilty guilty guilty loop where we ended up paying way more than we should have)...and so did opening the ajar bathroom door to find a guy taking a shit..who just glanced at me and went back to his magazine (I was in shock..so much so that I didn't even close the door...but he didn't care so it's all good).

And uh yeah..I don't know if I would go back but it sure was an experience..((nervous laughter))

It is what you'd expect when you look around right after you walk through the door.  The vibe is laid back and mellow, the decor is over the top, and the food is surprisingly good.

The food did take some time, but most of the wait was spent examining the artwork and objects all throughout the restaurant.  I enjoyed my meal of coconut soup but didn't find it overly remarkable, my friend's wrap was much better.  It was a clean and well lit establishment in addition to being interesting.

My only real gripe was that the menu seemed a bit hard to understand to me.  I'm not vegan, but I'm not new to vegetarian food either, I had to ask for details about a lot of the menu items.  It seems that they would want to clarify some of their terms a bit more.

Finally had the chance to eat at this fine organic, vegan, and very eclectic joint last night.  I always admire the funky murals and try and peek inside as I drive past, but when I have actually stopped to go in, it was during their siesta... closed from 3-5 daily (I believe) or too early in the morning, as they don't open until 11am.  Gotta love that mindset.. props to them for takin' it easy!  If only I got a siesta...

That mindset continues once you step foot in the place.  Very relaxed and chill setting, slow-pace (but in a good way.. just don't come starved and needing to eat within 5 minutes of arrival).  Good tunes, smiling-faces, excellent food, (homegrown=yum!) lots of art and other unique pieces, overall enjoyable atmosphere...  perfect for being just a few blocks from the beach!

Oh, and the sliding-scale pricing is good.. at least it gives you the option to pay what you feel the food was worth.  I'd never do less than the max, but hey.. if you weren't pleased with your dish.. then take the liberty to pay less.. kind folks there would be down with that sort of honesty, otherwise it wouldn't be an option:)

Next time I'm trying the cake too.. after all, it's made with positive vibrations.

    Okay-- review.  Short & sweet.

--Food is pretty damn good.  Quite good.  Not the best vegan I've ever had, but pretty damn good. Their homemade veggie burger = AWESOME.

--A tad pricey.  The variable pricing is a bit strange and may take some getting used to, but that shouldn't be something that decides whether or not you go here.

--Dear whoever said this place is cash only:  we just paid with a credit card.  So there.

Overall, good-- not "the best" but pretty damn good, and a very nice find out in the neighborhood that someone here on Yelp so aptly called the "Inner Farralons."

And finally, on the fourth attempt, the man with the hidden dreads finally opened the door to my patronage..........Chris J., the mighty sheik ambassador, to grovel at the feet of his delectably magnificient "homegrown" veggie burger.
It is a remarkable sandwich. I got to read a book about baking, too. And while waiting, i thought about how little i would have to actually leave the area with the cafe, judahlicious, other avenues and golden gate indian food all within wafting distance, to infiltrate my sensory mother board.

If it's closed the next time I roll up the avenues, i might have to chuck a compassionate brick through the window, though, it was a rather extensive waiting period....

    Two words : amazing food.

I've had my eye on this place for weeks but every time I come by (1) it's either closed or (2) I'm with uninterested company. But here, today, on a beautiful sunny San Francisco afternoon, I went down with the hope and the dream and yes, it was open. Had the salad with their specialized homegrown 'meat' substitute and it was entirely delicious. Not to mention, that while filling, I had enough room to share a chocolate cake with peanut putter ice cream with my friend. And that too was delectable. The service was friendly and fast, surprisingly, considering I've heard they lack in that department. But our food was ready to go in less than 10 minutes and piping hot to boot. I was aware of the sliding scale and chose the higher price considering the experience, plus included tip. Highly recommended.

    It's a new me in 2007, people.

Now, this is a phrase and concept that has been spreading around my social circle like copies of a newly-released Hollywood movie in Malaysia. (Which is to say, everybody has it on DVD before you can say "copyright infringement.") But I won't get my panties in a twist over ownership of it, since I think it actually originated with laura, who is excellent at putting an attractive spin on things like dieting and gym workouts. Besides, the whole trademarking of catch phrases on yelp is pointless, considering we're all basically signing over big chunks of our psychic energy here for no remuneration. Welcome to the 21st century.

Anyway, part of the new me is eating healthier, and part of it is reconnecting with my roots. So far, the eating healthier thing is going well, mostly because it allows me to reconnect with my roots, which are hippies and bike messengers and the Moosewood Cookbook. Because, while I may have a colorful and regal genealogy, my beginnings were humble and basically consisted of a rented house on 47th Avenue and Judah, full of hippies, bike messengers and Enchanted Broccoli Forest (look it up).

So I am enjoying reconnecting with things like steamed kale and agave nectar and the pervasive fragrance of ganja and unwashed bodies. And there is pretty much no better place to do this than Feel Real (located right in the middle of the Oceanside Historic Resource Survey area*, which is currently absorbing my Saturday afternoons.)

Aside from the convenience factor and the nostalgia, this food is actually really good. A pile of steamed greens sprinkled with herbs over potato hash (they call it "potato pancake" but it was basically really tasty savory home fries) absolutely woke up my bloodstream. And because I am not quite ready to relinquish the culinary pleasures of the western world, we got the whole grain waffle with Earth Balance (this is your friendly neighborhood omnivore with a public service announcement - Earth Balance is the new butter! So much better! All the goodness of butter without the greasy animal-bladder aftertaste!) which was DELICIOUS. Also, the coffee was amazing, and the whole brunch left me with a nice unleaded feeling. And everyone was friendly in the kind of way they are when you're a kid running around naked at Orr Hot Springs and they're all just like, "I don't know what this kid is doing here, but it's cool. Puff puff pass, man."

Sure, you may have to wait a while for your food, but if this bothers you so much, you probably shouldn't be at 46th and Judah. Since, if you haven't noticed, life just moves at a slower pace out here. I mean, it took you an hour to get out here, right? Also, if you're a stickler for process you probably shouldn't be in a vegan cafe run by nouveau hippies stoned out of their m'effing minds two blocks from the beach; no brainer, yeah? And fuck if their bathroom is not the best place to wash your hands EVER. It's like a day spa in there. They have two soaps and an exfoliator, and excellent water pressure. Also a skylight. Totally deluxe, for hippies.

Oh, and they take Visa. Fucking score, man.

*And, if hippies do nothing for you but you're interested in exploring the lost community of craftsman beach cottages called "Oceanside", PM me and I'll give you a tour. If you're not ugly.

I drove out from Oak-town just to go to this restaurant and it was worth it!

The previous reviews conveyed the vibe of this place just right - it is laid back and super, super friendly.  People came in and told the workers what they were in the mood for and the workers mixed & matched the dishes according to each person.

I got the small salad of passion (a surprisingly big bowl with a wide of beautiful, fresh veggies & a delicious dressing; $5-7).  I loved the salad so much!  I paid $7.
I also got the N'Steada sandwich.  I was a little disappointed with the sandwich - it's supposed to taste like tuna but it was actually kind of bland.  I was kicking myself because I should have listened to the other reviewers and gotten the homemade veggie sloppy joe thing.  However, the foccacia roll was soft and so, so good.  The sandwich was $7-10 (I think) and I paid $8.  I almost paid more because I just kind of fell in love with the place but that would really go against the whole "paying what you think your meal was worth" philosophy.

Oh, and I didn't feel like my food took longer than at any other restaurant.  It was kind of early (5:30 ish) when I got there but there were other people coming in while I was there and they all seemed to get their food in a normal amount of time, too.

    ***UPDATE***

I went back and got a small Salad w/ Passion topped with a homegrown (veggie burger thing of deliciousness).  SOOOOOO GOOD I wanted to cry!
P.S. Hummus was not so great and surprising small in portion size compared to what they usually serve.  Cookie was just okay.

Yesterday I ate at a vegan restaurant for the first time, indulging in a tofu scramble with some yummy potato cake-hash-thing next to it.  I'd never had a tofu scramble before but this was sooooo good, with the added bonus of not weighing me down after a 9 mile run down Ocean Beach and through Golden Gate Park.  My friend got a different scramble with the greens on the side -- also very tasty.  We were warned beforehand of what to expect re: service and waiting, and with that in mind we actually had a very pleasant experience.  Everyone behind the counter is super nice, just keep in mind that they do things on their schedule, and you'll be fine.

what a sad shame about this place. The food is so good but the owners don't seem to care at all about their customers. They began with no regular hours then they posted regular hours but apparently they don't stick to them. Twice now, I have called ahead and been assured that they would be open so I took a train all the way there from my house which is quite a ways away and both of those times they were not open. This was infuriating to say the least. This is so completely inconsiderate of other people. When you tell a customer that you will be open over the phone and then you are not, it's simply rude. It took me a long time to get there and then get back and find somewhere else to eat. Basically it ruined my day both times. I have found them open a few other times and the food was really tasty. Why can't they just think about other human beings once in a while?

Okay, so I am a bit mixed about this place. I love the atmosphere. I love the people. I'm not too fond of the long wait. The sliding scale threw me off. And if I didn't go there with a regular customer of theirs, I'd be clueless on how and where to order, who gets my water and silverware, and what time to actually go.

So, though I do enjoy eating healthy, I think I'd much rather get some fresh organic veggies at the market and make the food myself in my home. It's much faster and I don't feel bad about how much I paid for the produce if I'm not into my home made meal.

You've got to be really wanting it to make the effort to eat there. Yeah, some days I do have a whole afternoon of nothing to wait for one of their healthy meals, but for most part, try calling your order in for pickup. (Although I swear they only pick up their phones when they feel like it!)

They don't even bother with the formality of a check -- you do the math and deposit cash in their glass jar on your way out. The tempeh sandwich on toasted foccacia ($7-10) is delicious. The African-themed decor is cool, maybe a bit over the top.

    super friendly staff/owners.
    great food.
if you're picky, you might want to ask for more details about the menu. They put a lot of unlisted things on the food. It turned out good for me, but someone else might not be so happy with that.

just a great place. i will be back as often as i have time for.

EDIT: I have since decided that this is the best restaurant on the planet. Try the banana muffins and chocolate chip cookies. amazing. this place is going to take off soon.

    yes. yes. yes.

i've been to feel real three times now. i was a little confused and bewildered by the pricing at first, but the dude with the dreads gave us a very nice explanation. it does take a while to get your food though. (and they warned us before we even ordered.)

a lot of vegan places suffer from blandness, but not here. the apple/carrot/ginger juice is so fresh and zesty.  the scrambles are flavorful and some are even spicy. the waffles are super hearty, so look out. the prices aren't cheap but the portions are BIG and the food is really fresh and tasty. it also has a nice ambiance and outdoor seating on nice days.

if you hate hippies, if you're a type a and can't chill out, or if you have something against healthy, delicious vegan food, i would not recommend feel real for you.

Starting my day with a plate of steamed kale over soba and "homegrown" (basically a veggie patty-very tasty) was the right decision. Luckily I did not have anywhere to be urgently so the laid back timing was not a problem. I sipped my delcious cup of coffee in the sunny window on a cushion and became relaxed by the "womb like" atmosphere. I hydrated myself with a caraffe of water and also a beet/apple/celery juice. I would recommend this place for a leisurely breakfast before heading out to the beach. I also understand they have very good lunch - salads in particular.

I've had great experiences here with friends and just meeting people there. Great food. Great vibes. Worth checking out if you're in the outer avenues near the beach.  Right near Judahlicious and Other Avenues Grocery.  Great place just to hang out.  Mellow owner/employees.

I had apprehensions that this place would be a hppie haight st-like haven with dirty bathrooms and tasteless vegan food.
I was shocked to see how clean the place was.  Very friendly staff.  The food was soulful, healthy, progressive, and tasty.

It was a perfect belly-warmer after a day at the beach.  I forget what I had, it was a veg burger over grains and veggies.
A perfect meal at a good price.  Yeah they have the sliding scale but if you have a decent job, just pay the high end, it's still a good deal.

I'd go back every week if it weren't at the edge of the (western) world.

My new favorite place to go when I have no food at home.... which basically means I'm there ALOT. I didn't even know this place existed until I missed my N-Judah stop the other day and had to walk back from 46th. Poked my head in and then continued on my way home.
Went back the next day when I locked myself out of the house and realized that it was an entirely vegan/organic restaurant. This was such great news to me because I was tired of the burritos and thai food I had been eating.
I had the homemade veggie burger and WOW.... it was THE best veggie burger that I ever had... I only wish I could have some cheese on it (I'm a cheese freak). The employees were super friendly, explained to me how their restaurant worked since it was my first time there... and then to top it off... they price on a sliding scale! How awesome it that???!!!
Finally a reason to go out walking around in the Sunset... and be able to eat out without feeling guilty. it's all healthy stuff :-D

I came in 1/2 hour after their posted closing time- was welcomed, fed amazing food and asked to pay "what I thought it was worth." The experience is nourishing in so many ways, to me it was priceless. And I'm usually one of those people who want their food fast with no chit-chat. But this place really warmed me up to being fed, not just eating.

I went there with my mom whos a meat eater but she loved it. It has a very friendly staff, awesome reggae music bumpin' , and good home cookin. I got the veggie burger and crazy mashed potato stew thing. Very flavorful and healthy- not salty or covered in sauces to hide the earthy taste. I liked their teas the best and the atmosphere is very soothing. I want to come back for the breakfast, it looked better than the lunch menu!

This place is great!  I don't have much to add to the other reviews which sum it up quite well, except : (1) no alcohol is sold; (2) you might have them ease off the red onion in your salad (maybe I'm sensitive ...)

If eating healthy is important to you, this is your spot.  Everything on the menu just explodes with flavor, all 100% organic.  Get the Sunset (Tofu) Scramble and go for the potato pancake... guaranteed winner.  Oh yeah... these guys don't rush for anyone so do yourself and them a favor if you are short on time and give it a pass.
