6 reviews for Fay Da Bakery
Okay its the battle between Fay Da and Tai Pan for Chinese bakery notoriety, huh?
Well, Fay Da hands down has better:
(1) taro buns (not so oily)
(2) pigs in blanket (yeah, hot dog bun)
(3) mochi
(4) shredded pork bun. LOTS OF SHREDDED PORK + LOTS OF BUN = LOTS OF FUN.
The only issue is that its on the more expensive end of Chinese bakeries....but thats not saying its $$$!
Other reviewers have written about the bubble tea, but in my opinion, this isn't really a cafe for bubble tea. It's a place to get some Chinese pastries or buns as a quick bite to eat in the morning or as an afternoon snack. The ladies that work here take care of your orders quick! I've gotten different varieties of buns here in the morning on my way to work, and I've probably never spent more than two minutes each time I've stopped in. Speed is important on the morning rush to work! Plus, their bun prices can't be beat! I recommend the red bean sweet topping bun. It's my favourite!
If the butter rolls weren't so freaking fantastic, I'd be highly suspect that Fay Da really isn't a Chinese-owned bakery. They have a nicely-designed, website which lacks any unfortunate typos and grammar mistakes. The shelves are stocked with breads and pastries covered in consistent, branded packaging and are thoughtfully merchandised. Most good Chinese bakeries brown bag it and you'll be lucky if you can locate the place again, never mind be able to find it in a google search.
I stumbled upon Fay Da in Flushing but they have 9 locations between Manhattan and Flushing's C-towns. This is a good thing since I'll need to be able to satisfy my cravings for the butter rolls. I ate a loaf of it which has 7 buns in one sitting. Each bite is super buttery with a hint of sweetness.
I also got a loaf of the sweet bread but it's not sweet at all. The awesome butter rolls make up for it so I'll let that slide. I'm going back very soon to sample sponge cakes, baked buns, steamed buns, butter cookies, bubble tea, etc. and pick up another loaf of butter rolls.
WHY FAY DA oh WHY are your Bubble Tea prices so high???
For a regular sized Bubble Tea, it's priced around $2.95 a pop, but in regards to flavor, spending the extra $.50 is TOTALLY worth it! The Milk Bubble Tea was nothing less than awesome -they had just the RIGHT amount of ice to keep it cold, but not enough to kill the sweet flavor of the tea.
When my family had come here, I ordered a Baby Cheesecake...aside from saying it was probably one of the best things God could have made ONE DOLLAR (no, the Double Cheeseburger and Whopper Jr fall far in comparison), there really isn't much else to say about this piece of heavenly goodness...
Other than that, the place is pretty clean, has a rather small seating area in the back, and a pretty shabby bathroom.
For fresh Bubble Tea it's $5.00 with sales tax which is ridiculously expensive but worth a splurge. Their traditional Chinese buns are very fresh and very reasonably priced. You can buy lunch for two buns under $5.00. This bakery caters to the Chinese market which is exactly what I'm looking for.
I did like the bubble teas but got so sick of them. Also when this place first opened on Queens Blvd, I thought it was the shiznit. Unfortunately, I tried everything and realized it really ain't that great. Oh, and they charge for a plastic cup full of tap water...Now that's ridiculous.
