It is so difficult to get service. We called them on the telephone in the restaurant just to get a question answered.
But food-wise, I love the mango dessert thing! It IS WELL DONE and a gem to be discovered. I would go back for a buffet just for the mango dessert thing any time. They had surprisingly good chicken too. -

Maybe it was an off night for my visit, but we just weren't impressed by this restaurant. The place is nice and clean, and the two servers were very nice and attentive. Then again, there were only two other tables with patrons. I think we were a little early for dinner.
Basically:
Meat Samosa - very dry and not flavorful
Lamb Tikka Masala - the lamb was so tough that some of it was inedible. Althought the Tikka Masala sauce was very good
Nothing overall was outstanding to me. So, I will mark this restaurant off my list as "been there done that". . . -

I'll be blunt. A place named "Favorite Indian Restaurant" evokes the same reaction that "Honest E's Loansharking" would: immediate skepticism. It's housed in a building that is reminiscent of a Carrow's or Denny's. And it's wedged between a retirement center (I thought it was a motel) and an Autozone. We found ourselves alone and hungry in Hayward after running work errands one day. Steeled only by a solid 4-star rating from Yelp, in we went.
And we've been back four times.
The food is good! It's nice inside! The staff is friendly! Ok, and get this, we've never had a dinner for two (ordered from the menu) that's gone past $25. It's always been between $16 - 22. And we usually have leftovers.
The curries have are hot enough for my admittedly mild tastes and for my girlfriend's spicier preference. Ala carte entrées come with rice. The complementary "chips and salsa" are great.
I have not sampled the buffet. The fact is, I'm probably not going to spend more than the price of the buffet, and I get full off of what I order from the menu.
Ok, yes, you're not going to have one bite from anything off the menu and be magically transported to Mumbai. It's still Hayward outside, folks. My tastes run rather pedestrian, too (I love Chicken Tikka Masala). But it is consistently good food and anytime we find ourselves in the area looking for Indian cuisine, Favorite Indian Restaurant will be our favorite. -

Chai: C (tea bags)
Chicken Tikka Masala: D (Ok taste, but usually too spicy-hot)
This review is part of my "Chai & Chicken Tikka Trek" list. I might be coming back to Favorite. -

We came in for dinner and were the only people in there. So obviously the service was excellent. Tried a crepe dish i've never had before it was amazing.. as was the chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo. They have a million different sauces i've never seen nor heard of too! Great place to go for a buffet as its more affordable. It is a very nice and clean professional restaurant.

Overall it was a good experience. The variety of food available for the lunch buffet was amazing. My favorite was probably the Butter Chicken. The service was alright. The only "problem" was that, our group arrived for the lunch buffet right before they stopped serving, but they were nice enough to refill the main dishes. The $5 for $10 Yelp Deal for this place was AWESOME! The least expensive lunch buffet I've ever had!

Wanted to like it but I won't be back. Service was challenging as we ordered off the menu instead of the buffet. Even with the yelp deal, it just didn't compare. Garlic naan had only a bit of garlic and didn't seem fresh. The samosas were not bad. Sag with prawns was tasty but I left feeling a little sick to the stomach which returned when I had some leftovers the next day.

Haven't been here for a while now until recently. Didn't know they now have buffet for dinner too!
Food here is not bad. I agree with some of the other review that they need to refill the dishes more and can have better labels for each item. They also were slow on some of the services like refilling our naan and getting the check.
Other than that, I can get my butter chicken, garlic naan, chai, and call it day! Next time I'll save room for dessert, because I always end up being so full from the buffet! -

Union City, CA
So we were taking my eldest who was home from college to Kabila restaurant in Hayward/Union City border. But unfortunately when we got there, it was closed on Monday. While sitting in the car deciding what to do, I told them let's just go for Japanese or Vietnamese and we'll come back next time she's home. Guess she didn't want to wait for Indian food so she took my phone, went on Yelp to search for Indian restaurants in Hayward/Union City.
The funny thing was, she told me "Mom, there's this restaurant called "Favorite Indian Restaurant" that's about a 10min drive from here." I replied "Hon, if it's "Favorite Indian Restaurant" then that's what they're hoping we would think, the food must not be very good. I don't think we should go there."....hahaha. It's good that I gave in to their Indian food cravings, we haven't been to any other Indian buffet besides this one after that.
What got me was how clean the restaurant looked & the waiters were extremely polite and attentive....not like this other high priced one in Santa Clara...yup, we went all the way to Santa Clara to eat Indian buffet before trying out Kabila and now Favorite. They have different types of curry:goat, lamb, chicken, fish. Not to mention the veggie ones. We didn't have to pay extra for our chai tea, which we had to in Santa Clara. The mango ice cream was creamy. The only thing I didn't like was the soup, but other than that, I thought the food was tasty.
Hope you'll like it too :) -

I didn't expect to like this place but instead found it charming and, in so many ways, typically Indian.
The decor is nothing to get excited about and the service, albeit friendly, is somewhat chaotic. But then, that's India and it all went to creating an appropriately Indian atmosphere.
I was expecting the food to be overly Americanized but I was pleased, when it arrived, that it was relatively authentic. It's definitely not what you would get in India and it only offers a nod to the different regions, but then I'd be amazed if it were otherwise - and it probably would be illegal here. However, it's tasty and well presented and brought back so many happy memories.
I now know a good place to go in Hayward and, when life takes me there again, I'll definitely be returning to my new favorite indian restaurant! -

From 5 stars to 1. I've been a proud supporter for as long as I could remember however last night I went to the old location on A St. I ordered Chicken Sagwala and Butter Chicken. The Sagwala was average while the Butter Chicken was very bad. My daughter and I felt a bit ill after eating this sour, terribly prepared chicken bristle and bone, nightmare concoction. What happened to the quality? Well, guess it was my fault for going to the old abandoned location on A St.
So, I called to complain (which felt weird because I like these people a lot...). The "pretty" lady who now works at the Mission St location said she would communicate to the A St. location that I had a problem with the order. Today I'm going to go in (to Mission St.) for an exchange, and if I don't get a freshly prepared order than I will never go back... But I think they'll take care of me. Till then, I must lower my rating for what was once my Favorite Indian Restaurant.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love this place! The food and the service is always great. They also deliver in Hayward with a minimum order of $30. Don't wait until last minute to order for delivery say on a Friday night. The wait can be as long as 1 hour for delivery so plan ahead. The new restaurant is very nice and has a private lot.

I went with my wife and 2 children for the lunch buffet today, Monday, Dec 19th, 2011.
Favorite Indian Restaurant has a good buffet with drinks and dessert included. Wide selection and pretty clearly directed at a real east Asian clientele -- Indian News/Talk show on TV at entrance and Indian music videos on TVs inside dining area. For buffet, food quality is high and variety pretty wide. Good service too. I like that they bring you fresh nan rather than having it sit on the steam table all day. -

Came here on a recommendation from an Indian guy I met. He said it was good, and so I tried it out for lunch. Boy, was he right! The lunch buffet has a large variety of things from which to choose and includes chai tea and dessert. All that for less than $10 incl tax and tip. Amazing!
The wait staff was more than attentive to me as I am slightly disabled and the guy at the front counter assisted me into the restaurant and helped me to a seat.
Since I was alone for lunch, I enjoyed watching the Indian MTV on the television.
Definitely, bringing my kids with me next time! -

Went again. We go almost once a week now. Really love the food most of the time, and the service is pretty good. They recently hired a new person who is still figuring out the ropes, but overall we really enjoy this place.
Things are starting to get a bit pricy there, but they usually have coupons or deals to help offset the costs. Yelpers, this is a good one!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Lunch buffet is only $11! AND it includes a drink and fresh nan.
Service is spec-tac-u-lar! The waiters were waiting on us, foot and hand. And mind you, we didn't ask or demand it either! They constantly replaced our dishes, gave us more nan, and asked us how we're doing. 5 stars for service.
I've never been to an Indian buffet, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I particularly liked the butter chicken and the nan. The nan was crisp, fresh, and had my favorite...GARLIC. I loved the sauce on the butter chicken. Other items were okay. The fish was good, but not great. I liked the Spinach dish as well, but couldn't really eat too much of it. Also, I noticed there were only a few chicken pieces in their chicken dishes. But hey, it's a buffet at only $11!
They also have mango ice cream. It was very sweet, but tasty.
I liked that the owners didn't give me any glares when I went up to top my plate off...three times. That's always a good sign when a restaurant doesn't limit you during a BUFFET. (Sushi buffets charge you if you don't lick and clean your plate!) But good for me, I gobbled everything up...but I'm not proud of the resulting stomach bulge.
Yeah, definitely coming back...soon! -

My family goes here all the time. The fact that our little one gets to eat the buffet for free certainly helps.
I actually hadn't written a review before, having lost my yelp account to the ether, but wanted to write about tonight.
Their chai was absolutely perfect. Sometimes it can be too watery and sometimes the flavor of cloves overpowers everything else, but the nights they get it right I wish I could spend all night there just drinking chai. The chai dispenser doesn't always get quickly refilled near the end of the night.
I love the selection that I can get at the buffet from matter paneer, baigan barta, tikka masala, bhirani, spicy aloo gobi, saag, tandoori chicken, and fish pakora. They bring fresh naan to the table. For dessert I get their hot gulab jamun, a dish of kheer, and my kid gets a bowl full of soft serve mango ice cream.
I'd like them to be a little more observant on water service as I drink a lot of water (and they have come by to fill one glass but not another), but most people won't have this problem since they have a self-service soda dispenser and chai. My husband tells me now that they fill their water jugs from the dispenser so theoretically I can just go get it myself. Problem solved!
And they have gone out of their way for us at times as well. One night we remarked that we really preferred the hot gulab jamun to the iced one in the hopes that they'd have the hot ones more regularly. Not only did they bring us out our very own hot dish of them and didn't charge us any extra, but they've had the hot ones at the buffet every Friday night since (I did say we went here all the time).
A person *can* order off a menu during buffet nights. I've seen it and we've done it. But mostly I go here for the buffet so I can eat so many different things without having the massive expense that would go along with getting that variety.
There's plenty of room for improvement, but there's also plenty to bring us back each week. -
Review from Jamila J.
I'm not a big fan of Indian and this made me even less of a fan.
I was expecting to have the ability to order exactly what I wanted from a menu, but I found out it was a buffet. I was slightly disappointed. They did come around with Naan, but it really just tasted like a plain tortilla. Not yummy goodness of Naan that I actually love.
There were vegetarian and meat options in the buffet. All were decent, but nothing amazing. And when you've had amazing Indian food it's hard to settle for less.
The staff was definitely attentive and accommodating.
If you're on a budget and want a lot of food, this is your place. But if you want really great Indian, go elsewhere. -

My first buffet review! Normally, I don't go to buffets because nowadays I'm all about the portion control. However, when I got to Favorite Indian (was this the best name they could think of?) the host told me that I didn't have the choice to order off the menu on Fridays so...buffet it was! Anyhow, he also said that everything was on the menu was in the buffet.
A Look Around:
Favorite Indian (ughh, that name!) is not much of a looker. The interior looks as if it could have been a Denny's and not authentically Indian. But I got past its looks and let the aromatics of the food take over my senses. The fragrance of the food alone made me forget about the relatively drab interior.
What I Ordered:
It was a buffet so I had a little bit of everything (it took two trips to the buffet) But I did have two servings of the Goat Curry.
What My Taste Buds Say:
The food in the buffet was a mixed bag. The buttered chicken was oddly dry, the Indian-style spinach (I don't know the Indian name because it was labeled "Spinach") was way too spicy, the Tandoori Chicken tasted like chicken that just happened to be pink (not the underdone kind of pink) and the Naan was dry. On the other hand, the Goat Curry was quite the delight; so much so that I helped myself to two servings and the Vegetarian options like the Squash and lentils were well-seasoned, well-textured, and yummy.
Overall: Generally, my thoughts are that one must not have high expectations with food that is made en mass. I think if they had allowed me to order off a menu I would have given this restaurant a higher rating. Unfortunately, this was not my Favorite Indian Restaurant. -
Review from Golda R.
I love how cheap their Indian food is!! It use to be this hole-in-the-wall off of A St. in Hayward and it moved to this location where they now offer dinner buffet service. Before my husband and I would routinely come here to order the chicken tikkamasla, garlic naan, and their grilled meat combo. But with the added dinner buffet, we just feast. Its so easy to get full here. Definitely worth the money because its awesome food!!
$15/plat for Indian buffet? It's a steal and I LOVE it. So does my husband and brother. -

if anyone reads this.. the yogurt "salad dressing" is not salad dressing. If you put a bit of this over a really spicy dish it calms it down..it's called raita-it's a sauce or dip not necessarily a salad "dressing".. the lemony flavor helps calm the heat of spicy dishes. I always put it on my spinach.. it's wonderful!

Let me say that ten dollars will get you everything you ever wanted to eat at an Indian buffet and more. In a good way.
This includes soda, appetizers, naan, dessert, etc. Mango ice cream was something I was particularly excited about.
I am a big fan of butter chicken/chicken tikka masala/paneer or whatever combination thereof. They had a lot of variety to choose with the different combinations, and it's all very clean and fresh.
I'm rarely impressed with a buffet, but this was pretty spectacular.
Oh, they also have saag paneer, which I am also particularly fond of. And that okra dish that I can't think of off the top of my head.
I'm hungry right now, so eloquence eludes me.
Is it ironic that Favorite Indian Restaurant is now my favorite Indian restaurant?Listed in: When you have money to…, My personal favorites.

What I liked:
Very inexpensive buffet where you will likely get all the main staples. The food was hot and fresh and not bad for buffet food. The TV's playing Bollywood videos were mesmerizing.
What I didn't like:
The fruit flies that wouldn't go away and ended up dying in my wine. How long it took to get orders of naan (it was fresh, but never plentiful). The fact that they wanted to push the buffet instead of letting us order off the menu. -
Review from Mary C.
I love Indian food no matter where I eat it. Favorite Indian Restaurant was good. I'll come back again when I get the craving but I feel like they either skimp on some pieces of chicken in the tikka masala. Maybe somebody else got to it before I did or maybe because we came in a little later in the night. They have a range from yogurt curry to lamb curry, goat meat, and a variety of chicken curries. I don't particularly like the white dressing with my salad; it's kind of sour. And I really wish they labeled everything more so I knew what I was eating.
I love the reviews. The garlic naan is delicious and the server, Bikram, is a sweetheart.
My mom's a picky eater so I guess I docked a star because it didn't wow her as much as I wanted it to. The curries weren't the kick-in-my-face spicy that I'm used to in Artesia but nevertheless, satisfying.
Mention yelp and 15% off the bill! Oh and don't skip the MANGO froyo machine :) -
Review from Hanna Y.
They changed the way they do dinner now. It's now a buffet and there is a wide variety of selection. You only tell your waiter what kind of na'an and any alcoholic drinks you might want. Otherwise, dinner and desert is buffet style. One think they don't have is shrimp curry and lamb curry but given they have a history of wanting to make customers happy (based on my past experience), it wouldn't hurt to ask. Gotta love it. Yummmmm

Hayward, CA
I've been here twice now, for the lunch and dinner buffets. Both times, the selection was good and the food overall looked fresh. The butter chicken was very good. Their mattar paneer was prepared a little differently than I'm used to, more tomato, but it was absolutely delicious, best mattar paneer that I've ever had. The nan was well made and plentiful, none of us ever ran out. Everything I've had here has been, at the least, good, if not very good.
The main reason that I don't give them 5 stars is because overall, almost all the food was a bit on the mild side. Not so much less hot, but more mildly seasoned or less strongly seasoned. But everything tasted great. I look forward to trying them on a non buffet night.
Both times I went, we were all entranced by the Bollywood music videos playing on two screens, at a very discreet volume. -

I think this is where I had the best Indian food experience I ever had. Took bf here to try Indian food for the first time, he was very sceptical and hesitant in trying it, but he ended up loving it here. Because for one, the aroma of spices and curry didn't linger around the restaurant and because the food was so good. We ordered plenty:
Fish pakora - really good and fish was flakey
Spinich pakora - very crispy and great flavor
Tandori chicken - first time it was ever brought to me on a sizziling iron platter and I loved it, kept it hot during the whole dinner
Garlic naan - just enough garlic to make it tasty and not over powered
Mango lassi - nice and creamy without being too thick.
Will for sure be coming back. -

I very much enjoyed my experience here but I just can't give it 4 stars! Food was good but nothing melted in my mouth and i love indian food. Came here for dinner and the cost doesn't equal the value of the food for me. So yeah I'd come back but definitely for lunch next time.
Service though was awesome. Servers were very attentive. My glass was never empty and everytime my friend made a face, immediately a server would ask us if everything was ok.. of course it was... my friend's face is just very expressive! -

Not MY favorite Indian restaurant, yet somehow I still end up coming to Favorite Indian almost every time I'm back in the Bay for the holidays. Their Bhindi Masala is really quite good, with the okra almost never being stringy (a relatively common problem). And I could eat mattar panner forever, it is so delicious.

Review from A. L.
Dublin, CA
Their uber-deliciousness is back! I dined here again this past week but it wasn't during their buffet hours. We did the a la carte dining and it was mouth-wateringly amazing. My last visit here was when they were training their new chef and it fell quite short of their usual standard; not the case this time.
We ordered our faves - Butter Chicken, Chicken Vindaloo (extra spicy), Bengan Bertha (eggplant), and the bread basket that comes with the three different naans. Their saffron rice was perfection and we left there feeling so satisfied once again and believing that this place was truly our favorite Indian restaurant on Earth. The best part was that the cost of this meal for two wasn't much more than their buffet price for two, and we had to pack the rest to go even though we had been starving and ate nonstop. (The a la carte dishing looks deceivingly small.) The service, as always was excellent.
Unsure if I mentioned this before but one of the main reasons why I love this place, is that it's the first Indian place that doesn't make me feel as if I overstuffed myself already halfway into the meal. My previous fave Indian eateries always made me feel too stuffed to walk out of the place, almost as if they over-starched their curries on purpose, thick and goopy. The textures of this place's food are much lighter in consistency than most of those other Indian places, which you can see off the bat. Here, although I do get stuffed, it's because I made it so by the quantity I chose to eat... Know what I mean?
Last but not least, this place remains one of the cleanest Indian restaurants, still. My tummy's Indian Heaven...2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I must come here a lot, because the staff is starting to recognize me and remember my orders. I love the consistency of the food here! The naan is always hot (they always remember that I prefer garlic naan), the palak paneer is always delicious, and the mango soft serve is the perfect ending.
I love the dinner buffets because I'm one of those people that want a little bit of everything (or a lotta bit of everything). I can't just stick to one or two curries when I have indian food, so their buffets are perfect for being able to experience a variety of what they have to offer. Of course, when you order off the menu, the quality of the food and the amount of chicken in your curry will be much better than what you will find in the buffet, but this is to be expected!
My only gripe is I've noticed that the fish pakora batter has changed in the past couple of weeks... it used to be a lot better than it is now. BRING IT BACK!!! PLEASE!!! -

3.5 stars!
I came with my friend for Sunday lunch and they were serving their food buffet style. Im accustom to more hole in the wall and self service Indian restaurants and this was the first fine dining one I been to. It was different but the ambiance was nice. It felt clean and open.
Our server was very attentive and friendly and checked on us often. He started by asking us if we wanted regular or garlic naan and we chose garlic. I love garlic naan! The naan looked greasy but it was still good. Less oil would have been better. There was a vast selection to choose from and my all time favorites are the tika masala, aloo ghobi, creamed spinach and seasoned rice.
Overall, it was a nice intimate setting compared to the smoky, loud and small places I'm used to. This place doesnt top Kabana in Berkeley though. -

Went here for the lunch buffet. Lots of options. Easy parking.
I'm not a big fan of Indian food because I find the meats overcooked, regardless of whether they are in a curry or baked in a tandoori oven. However, the sauces they use in the buffet line are very tasty and go well with the rices they have.
Then again, there's the naan and onion naan breads. Absolutely fantastic. I stuffed myself with delicious naan breads. Didn't even need to dip them in any of the sauces. They're great all by themselves.
