There are two places during my visit to NYC where I had my quinessential NY experience, the "Aha! I'm so not in ____ anymore!"  One was finding Little Branch a few blocks up in the pouring rain, and here, at Fat Cat.

A nice wind down to a night of bar hopping in the rain was found here...pool tables, shuffleboards, ping pong, even chess. Pumpkin beer in hand, we played shuffleboard until almost 4am, with live Jazz playing and smelly college kids worked on their ping pong backhand. So perfect. So New York.

Here are the facts. Underground. Dark. Low ceilings. Live music. Microbrews. Games (pool, darts, ping pong, chess, etc.).

If one or more of those above nouns do not appeal to you, please leave Fat Cat's for the rest of us. It gets crowded enough in this game hall/jazz club. But when you're out on the town and want to have a great time with loud music, strangers, and killer brew, make a point of stopping at this down-below establishment. Your ears won't forgive you, but your liver will.

BEER SELECTION: Good. About a half-dozen microbrews and a handful of standards on tap and the bottle. A little pricey, though.
SERVICE: Non-existant. When this place gets crowded, be ready to pull a Michael Jordan-style elbow to get to the bar and place an order.

They start charging a cover (between $3 and $5, depending on the night), which I'm usually against for such a place... but this is too good to pass up. If you want, get there early (they don't start charing until later) and grab a seat/table for the show.

Fat Cat's the perfect place when you're looking to relax with your pals and have some real, homely fun. There's always a wait for the game tables but the good-natured atmosphere compels gamers to not hog the paddles. Great beer selection (Tire Bite!) and $3 PBRs is a huge thumbs up.

Definitely a good crowd, especially for the John-Malkovich-in-a-tracksuit types.

This place is chilled, laid back, and unpretentious and truly makes a great hang out spots with your friends.  You'll never run out of things to do here.  There's pool/ table tennis/ shuffleboards, board game, good conversations and a live jazz band to boot.  The only real minus - they only serve beer, a a small cover, but that's cool with me.  You can order food from outside and have it deliver so this truly makes a good, inexpensive hang out spot.

I went to this place last night for a friend's birthday party. They charged 3 dollars cover because there was 2 jazz bands playing (both of which were located in some far off corner of the place that no one even cared to go to)

I get in there and the first question that popped into my mind as I looked around is "where is the Russian Roulette?" Yes, it came off as something out of The Deer Hunter for some reason. Maybe because it's in a basement and there's a mass of people huddled around tables upon tables. That, and we were all braking a sweat just standing there, in t-shirts, which is weird since you're underground and it was 40-something degree weather outside. Not to mention they had the door open all night.

They charge 9 cents per minute, per person, playing pool, ping-pong, shuffleboard or whatever else the hell they have there as activities. I feel that if they wanted to make money, perhaps, instead of this lame attempt at making it sound like a good deal on renting out a game area, they widen their bar to be larger than an office desk. Perhaps try selling other drinks other than snobby beers like Hoegaarden. They also have Pabst for 3 bucks, which I guess is a deal if you don't mind drinking something considered a fine wine by hipsters. Oh, and speaking of wine, they also sell that too. My friend's girlfriend ordered a glass. it smelt like a yeast infection. I am fairly sure they just took boxed wine and poured it into a bottle to make it look like they actually have real wine. I have an active imagination, so who knows if this is true or me just lashing out at the place for having a weak selection of drinks.

Another problem I had was that It took us 2 hours to get a pool table to play on. They give you a ticket and you have to sit there waiting for the game you reserved to open up via some numbers counters located on walls throughout the place. If you hate waiting at the DMV for your number called, you'll hate this. Oh, and good luck finding a seat to wait out your game being open though cause it was over crowded for us til around 2am. One 3 seater couch was open and the rest of us had to keep pivoting where we stood to get out of the way of people playing pool around us/anyone trying to get past us.

Also, it was a pain in the ass trying to hold a conversation with anyone because it was so loud in there from all the people talking and whatever noise (music?) they had going on over the speakers. I constantly found myself yelling "WHAT?" and leaning in drastically close to people's faces just to hear them trying to talk to me.

the ping-pong tables are closed off via nets, but the balls still found ways out into the rest of the room, and I almost busted my ass once or twice tripping on these rogue balls.

After one game of pool, we got fed up and left. I doubt I will ever step foot in this place again after my experience.

Somewhere between conception and birth, my athletic gene was lost. This became common knowledge when I played a rousing game of ping pong with a couple of cool southerners a fellow Yelper and I met at Fat Cat. This place really can do know wrong in my eyes. When ping pong, pool, a live band and cheap brewskies are combined, everyone is surely gonna have a good time. A great place to hang if you want more stimulation than a bar would provide, but you don't wanna be tied down to just playing pool like you would be at a pool hall.

If people were still allowed to smoke inside, it would complete the fantasy that I'm in a movie about a 1980s Communist Training Camp for the Game Enthusiast Olympics.

Separated by ratty nets hanging from the ceiling are dozens of games being played by players young and old: pool, pong, shuffle, foos, chess, checkers, scrabble, gammon, othello & go among them.

There is also a band (too loud for this basement) and no full bar (only beer and odd house liquors) neither of which would keep me from returning.

Fat Cat is a perfect a place to go on a rainy Sunday afternoon, even if I'd be scared to go here at prime time on a Saturday night when NYU is in session, but I really want to wear sweatbands next time.

I love this underground jazz and games spot. Ping pong, shuffle puck, pool, scrabble and chess OH MY. For $3 cover on Saturday night there's cheap drinks ($3 PBR's) and all the entertainment you can handle.

This is a wonderful date spot and in a great neighborhood for food, music and bars. The place is owned by the same people who own the jazz spot Smalls around the corner so the music is always wonderful.

Just note, if you want to play anything you'll need to take a number at the bar. Do this immediately, as soon as you arrive, as you get your first drink.

1. Get waiting ticket
2. Wait patiently
3. Pick up paddles/balls/? and leave id w/ bartender
4. Don't forget ID
5. ENJOY

Fat Cat is a really cool place. Definitely not yer typical bar scene. The underground floor is huge but an area to settle in can be extremely hard to come by on a weekend.

Prices are normal Manhattan I guess. There's live music so they charge a $3 cover. I'm not sure if this depends on what night and time you go. So you've got a cover charge, then the PBR cans are $3 which is a $ too many if you ask me. That takes some balls. They charge for the table games as well which is reasonable but the atmosphere of the place makes it seem like you'll be spending less money than you actually are.

Overall Fat Cat is a nice break from your run of the mill bar. FYI, no liquor. Beer and wine only.

FUN!

This place is a no-frills place.  There's a bar and games.  This place is great to come and just hang with your friends.  Sometimes you just want to relive your high school years.  We ended up playing pool and had a blast.  I can't wait go back and try some ping pong.

Fat Cat is like going to your favorite friend's house in high school. You know, the friend that had the cool basement with the pool table, table tennis, air hockey, a nice bar, surround sound and a closet full of games.

Now fast forward a few years - make that basement bigger with multiples of all of the above, a bar staff and some funky live jazz, oh and downgrade the furniture by a lot - and you've got Fat Cat.

This is a great place to bring friends of any age range (including under 21) on a weeknight, especially for the local villagers who probably don't have gigantic living rooms to accomodate all sorts of games and play. Weekends are a bit more packed and it's harder to get a game going, but the music and bar are still the perfect way to end a hectic night.

And now to cap off the birthday reviews...the Fat Cat, where the first night of my 25th year on this planet came to an end.

I won't lie. The idea of playing Scrabble in a public place...with alcohol provided...is the perfect example of erotic nerdiness for me. And yes, I did just use that phrase. If you don't know me personally, let me make one thing perfectly clear: Scrabble is the best game on the planet (and on my iPod).

Ironically, we spent our night on the pool table despite my affinity for Scrabble. Out of 10 or so people, only one guy was remotely interested in the game the entire night, but the rest of us made for it with plenty of Facebook-worthy "night after" photos. Which I promptly posted of course. ;)

My shout-outs for this place:

- the live band
- the plethora of pool tables
- the Toasted Lager on tap
- the Scrabble boards
- the 12,000 PBR cans floating around

My annoyances with this place:

- the bathroom was pretty damn gross...and small
- it was a tad bit warm...I guess that'll be good during the winter season

This may become a new hangout spot for our group. They do allow those who are under 21 in because they keep track of who can buy alcohol thanks to an ugly cat stamp that they place on your left hand. It took 3 showers to get that thing off...

this is definitely a no frills place...let me summarize:
1) its in the basement (you'd completely miss the entrance except for a small white 'fat cat' sign.
2) the time i went i listened to a 15 pc jazz band
3) there are at least 10 ping pong tables, 10 pool tables, 2-3 shuffle board, 2-3 foosball tables....and probably some other games that i missed.
4) my first reaction when seeing the size of the place was, why haven't i heard of this place before?
5) anyway, its worth checking out.  fun times, no frills.

A world-class dive that combines live jazz/blues music with a wide assortment of games like ping pong, chess, scrabble, and pool. The vibe in this bar is spectacular! The bar is spacious, with plenty of room to move around, depending on the entertainment you like. The drinks are relatively cheap and the ambiance is casual. The only downside to this place is that they do not have a full bar. However, the beers on tap are pretty delicious i.e. Magic Hat, so the lack of liquor is not that big of a deal. If you can't find fun at this place, you need to re-evaluate your life.

Life is like a game of pool. Banging balls together until you sink the right one in the right hole. With practice your aim gets better, confidence grows and soon it'll take less time to get the right balls in the holes you want.*

Fat Cat offers a wide selection of life lessons. While the $3 cover initially had me suspicious, as soon as I was enveloped in the large room equipped with a full bar, more than 20 pool tables, ping pong tables, board games, skee ball and a live female soul group shuffling and belting out incredible tunes ... I was sold. Since I was hosting a few college buddies (read dudes in flip flops and t-shirts) this was the ideal place ... no fuss, no muss and no rude bouncers not letting us in to Fat Black Pussycat because of improper footwear.

The prices aren't exactly cheap, but really not much is in this town. For a relaxed night with a group of friend it doesn't get much better. It's like hanging out at the ultimate basement party. Rack em up!

THIS. PLACE. ROCKS!!!!

My friend, Shea D., who just hit the big 2-5 (ha!), decided to close out her awesome day here at Fat Cat. When you arrive they check your ID (however minors ARE allowed in! which was perfect because we had a 20 y.o in the group) and you pay the modest $3 cover charge to get in. Then the fun begins!

I arrived to an already set up pool table, so I'm not sure how the system works in procuring one. This place seriously looked like someone had an abnormally large basement and decided a game room to share with the world was in order! There were tons of pool tables, ping pong tables, shuffle boards, chess, scrabble, backgammon the list goes on!!

Beer was $6 a glass, but I also saw TONS of people drinking PBR. This seems like the kinda place where that might just be acceptable! I swear I kept feeling like some mom was going to knock on the door and yell "keep it down down there you kids!"

I am withholding one star for a couple reasons. Forget personal space. Though that can be cool where it breaks down group barriers and essentially the entire place is just one big party, there seriously wasn't any room to have a conversation without constantly having to move away from a pool cue's deadly trajectory. AND THE PLACE WAS HOT. No no, not sexy, I MEAN HOT. I noticed a review on here about the air conditioning being down. Well it definitely was down again!! It was scorching!

The live bands were cool too. Nice jazz to relax to. Overall I had an awesome time hanging with friends here and will most likely find myself back again!

After four years of residing in NYC and countless business trips, I've spent my fair share of time playing the velvet rope game. These days, I'd much rather spend time with my friends vs. standing next to them and screaming over the din.

This was my first visit to Fat Cat.  We went to meet some friends who were in town from Santa Barbara for a wedding.  It's a large space filled with billiard and ping-pong tables and then surrounded by tables with scrabble games and chess boards.  The place was packed with a mix of college age up to business aged folks.

Good selection of beers at the bar, friendly bar tender and easy-going crowd.  We spent the evening in the ping-pong round-robin and had a great time.  I wish I'd brought my fun with me.

Fat Cat is a surreal mash-up of live jazz, ping pong tables, pool, chess, scrabble, shuffle board, hipsters, suits, college kids, and thrill seekers.

It's a one-stop shop for a hedonistic regression to one's youth, and I had a blast when I was there.  Suitably divey and cheap, it's a wonderland of worn out table games, 2nd hand couches, peeling paint and dinky and dirty bathrooms.  It's unpretentious, though there are some serious pool sharks and table tennis kings that get their workout here.

Commensurate with the atmosphere, drinks are cheap, though their selection of draft brews is impressive.  If you want to kick it college style, there are also $3 PBR cans, perhaps more appropriate for the divey atmosphere.

Fat Cat is fun, cheap, and a great alternative to the usual bar/club/lounge/speakeasy scene.

It's like a bizarro episode of beauty and the geek in this joint.  As you may know - I'm on alki detox this month, so this isn't another one of my drunken delusions.  Sober as a judge, I felt like it was a nerd's hazy fantasy in Fat Cat on Saturday night:

*Busty women gathered by the chessboards to cheer on the brain trust

*Skinny Indian guys displaying otherwise suppressed athleticism at the ping-pong tables

*Math geeks impressing their armcandy at the pool tables by applying clever geometric theorems to their game

I will say that I had reservations about going into this place.

We were walking down Christopher Street, me and my two rough trade companions a la Tom of Finland, (my only fear being that I would be perceived as a twink bottom - oh no you didn't!).  Anyway, we get here and there is a line on the stairs going DOWN.  The line moved quickly, like within seconds (seriously, it doesn't take long to stamp hands w/some bizarre take on a Hello Kitty stamp).  I smirked at the thought of paying a $3 cover (I didn't know what the cover was, handed the guy a twenty and I get seventeen bucks back,  I'm like "what?").

Inside, it's a cavernous basement LOADED with tattered and worn, but comfy looking armchairs and divans, like castaways at some Long Island yentas garage sale in the Five Towns.  There were plenty of chess games in progress searching for the next Bobby Fischer, Scrabble tournaments, ping pong, shuffleboard, etc.  You name it, they got it, and if they don't have it you didn't really want to play it and you're being a pain in the ass complaining.

One drawback: no hard liquor.  I guess the key to mom and dad's liquor cabinet wasn't included in Mrs. Rosenbergs sale.  The beer selection was strange - Alligash white, or whatever it is, or Old Speckled Hen, and forget about PBR (how is this fashionable!).  Also out of the three bartenders I saw (one of whom looking eerily like Hans Moleman from THE SIMPSONS), not one of them knew how to pour a drink and from time to time we kept getting sprayed upon by some unruly tap that escaped the bartenders control and I was hosed down like some fluffer on a porn set.  But I forgive the bartenders - it just added to the ambiance.

The clientle was extremely diverse: plenty of what-you-expect in a New York bar - unlike one-sided Boston.  There were people sitting on some couches listening to the jazz, which just added to the Far Side world of the Fat Cat.  Plenty of girls in various states of (un)dress, from next-to-nothing, to evening wear that would seem over the top at the Bollinger-American Express-Venice Charity Opera-Celebrity Polo Cup.

The bathrooms here, I think, weren't THAT sleazy - check out the Mars Bar if you want a REAL Buffalo Bill Goodbye Horses "place the lotion in the basket" horror show scene.

This was my first time to Fat Cat.  Cool, CASUAL, large, bar.....with games!  Pool, ping pong, foozball, skeet ball, chess, checkers, and live jazz.  Very cool place.  Line outside moved fast.  I was particularly impressed with the fashionably dressed woman in heels kicking butt in ping pong!  Note- no hard liquor.  Only beer and wine.  This is not my usual type of hang out, but for something different, casual and fun....good place.

I am so sad there is no place like Fat Cat in LA.

An NYU student took me here, and I was thoroughly impressed. Cheep and good beer/wine...pool,ping pong, shuffle board, and jazz...

I cant get over how stinking cool this place is. If you are 18-35 and you are at a loss for what to do after the normal bars close, head over to Fat Cat and cozy up to a pool table and some PBR.

I am pretty sure my future boyfriend hangs out here. Upon entering and paying the $3 cover charge, me and the ladies I was with scanned the room and were in agreement that this "was our kind of place". In the words of my friend "hot nerds...yes please!"

They have ping pong, pool tables, scrabble, a live jazz band playing, chess, shuffleboard, a couple of booths, and a few random couches spread throughout. This place harvests a young crowd. We stopped at the bar and I tried to order a whiskey shot and a cider beer...I was in a weird drinking mood as I already came inebriated. They stated "no hard liquor"...aw *thumbs down*. I got a beer and they said its a $10 minimum on credit cards and took my card and gave me this stand in card just so I don't forget my credit card at the end of the night or something. I thought it was a smart plan. I ended up paying with cash later anyway though. The bartenders were efficient but not  too friendly.

We scored a scrabble game board, the letter pieces from the bar, and situated ourselves at a table with some nice couches. Many hours later, 3 different sets of fella friends made with my ladies, me now sober, and the single game of scrabble was finally won by me : - ) ! Playing a board game with drunk people is ROUGH...that shit never ends! Oh and "qua" & "zin" are words, they scored me many points.

So it turns out we stayed until Fat Cat were pretty much closed because it was 4am and the workers were cleaning up. The jazz was still playing though therefore I was happy. In describing this place I will say as my friend said "it feels like we're somewhere illegal" because there is no windows and it seems like your in some one from high school parent's basement but in a charming nostalgic way. I'll be back for sure but next time I plan to make it home before the sunrises.

For ping pong it's cool, but for the Jazz it sucks. Now they've even opened up the place so while you're trying to listen to the tunes (which is always the same damn roster of musicians with nothing new) you can be pleasantly interrupted by that ever so wonderful sound of some frat boy idiot screaming about his air hockey goal.

Yeah, way to go. More points for NYC's disintegration...

I don't know where else I can play shuffleboard, ping pong, pool and boardgames in one night (if I wanted to do it all in one night) and have cans of PBR.

It is affordable and fun, It is much like a well equipped basement full of games. The jazz thing feels a bit tacked on, but it doesn't bother me. I would be surprise if someone actually came exclusively for the jazz. Come for the comfy couches and beer, you don't even have to play a game.

The bar and the bartenders are cool, it almost feels like they aren't 'pro'  bartenders... which is a good thing. They are friendly and don't drop their hands to their side and cock their head like the pros do if you don't have your drink order ready as soon as they look at you, and the cash ready shortly after the drinks are poured.

I usually stick to the cans of PBR. They have a forward facing water tap and a couple racks of glasses....it is nice to serve yourself water-to not have to ask...best ever, in fact.

(In my best Twilight Zone impersonation)

"Picture if you will... A grotesquely entertaining establishment, formed from the union of a jazzy dive bar, and a Chucky Cheese.  Child like games juxtaposed with the mirth of cheap beer and pizza.  You've entered...  Fat Cat."

That said, I love this place!  I had been on an epic quest to find a bar around NYC with decent Tabletop Shuffleboard for a while. (As a sidebar, if you haven't drank while playing tabletop shuffleboard, you're life isn't complete.) I hit the web and noticed some other loyal yelpers praised this place as a great place to do EXACTLY that, and catch some music in the process.  So I gave it the ol' college try and came by on a Saturday afternoon.

What I found was the most amazing/bizarre mix of games, booze, jazz, and sketchery I've seen in a while!  At first, we were confused at having walked into the middle of a 10 yr old's Birthday party from the start? But it was explained to me later that this happens in the afternoon.  C'est la vie.

We thankfully chose NOT to join their shindig, but instead grabbed a seat and caught 4-5 numbers from the 4 piece jazz combo that was playing all afternoon.

After a healthy diet of jazz and $3 PBRs, we then moved on to shuffleboard, ping pong, trash talking, more shuffle board, and WOULD have played pool had we the time.  I've always had a soft spot for bars that understand my need to get drunk and play games. Fat Cat gave me my fix of all of these things and more.

Could be infested with hipster types (it is hipster central afterall) but it's a really fun place to hang and chill.  Cool place to hang out late at night listening to some jazz.  You can get decent connections there as a jazzer too.
Their beer selection is good, which made me a happy person.

Beer + jazz, life is good.

I'd like to mention that Fat Cat did very courteously respond to my review to let me know that normally there is air conditioning in here, but it was out of order at the time of  my visit.  I appreciated the response, although I think I'm still the wrong target audience for Fat Cat.  Clearly lots of others love it, so if you're into a divey atmosphere, no-frills beer, and pool, then it might just be for you.

Every town needs a bar like this. Fat Cat reminds me of the Sundowner Saloon in Boulder.

Fat Cat ain't the fanciest joint in town, but it's a great place to hang out with some friends, drinking beer or shots, and getting shitty while playing some ping-pong.

Yep, they've got Pong here. Also a ton of pool tables. And pong. Also a jazz band on some nights, which is odd. And pong!

Next time I go I'm gonna sit in the secret room behind the bar. It's not really a secret but it's kind of hidden.

I'm not a big fan of the cover charge and wristband system, but it's usually pretty cheap.

Pong....

Perfect place to kill some time or satisfy a serious urge to play ping pong.   I came here to challenge one of my friends in a round but had plans for later on that night and needed somewhere quick and no hassles. No problem, the place had a table open and we got to playing as soon as we got there.

The equipment was what really impressed me. At first it looks like a bar that decided to line the perimeter with some ping pong tables, but I noticed the level of skill that a lot of the other players had and they weren't joking around. Everything from the table, balls and paddles were far better quality than what you'd expect from a place like this.

My friend crushed me but it was well worth it.

This place is bizarre! Doesn't feel like NY. Big brightly lit space with live jazz, a bar, pool tables, scrabble, chess, foosball, ping pong!!! Fun, but pool table was pricey.

Oh, another beer?

Definitely has the atmosphere of a frat party, complete with Foosball, ping pong, and lots and lots of PBR. Get there early (on weekends) and commandeer a couch/corner.
Decent way to spend a Friday night when all else fails.

To be updated, for sure.

You'd have to be in a certain mood to enjoy the atmosphere in Fat Cat.

I find it unique because you can play ping pong, scrabble, chess, Foosball and shuffle board. Be sure to bring spare cash for those things though. Scrabble's a dollar per player, Foosball's a dollar a game and I'm not sure about the other games.

In terms of drinks, there's not really a lot to choose from. No vodka here, only soju. Although the bar tenders were nice, there were only 2 serving 30 people drinks AND handling the game tables. They should really have somebody separately doing that.

For a Thursday night, the crowd was good. The booths could use some cleaning though. Spills aren't cleaned up for a while so be careful where you sit.

Security was good. A fight almost broke out and that was handled well and quickly.

All in all, I liked Fat Cat. You can enjoy with a group of friends, play scrabble with a great jazz band playing in the background.  It would be a lot better if it were more staffed: someone cleaning and someone in charge of the games.

Next time I go, I just won't wear clothes that I'd hate to get dirty and drink somewhere else before I go inside.

i came to fat cat for my first time last night, and i really did enjoy my experience!

for a $3 cover, i got to see some chill live jazz while socializing!

you also have the option of playing ping pong, pool, shuffle board, etc (which i LOVE, not a game for florida retirees!)

theres lots of seating options (couches, chair set ups) although sometimes placed a little too close to the pool table...definitely got my butt poked a few times by an apologizing persons. you do have to get a wait ticket and pay for each game you want to play, which sucks :( but also prevents people from stealing paddles and what have you.

it's definitely a come with a big group of friends place, as people didn't seem to really break friend barrier groups and mingle...also it was before 12 AM and perhaps no one was drunk enough yet.

lastly, i somehow lost my phone after one beer and it miraculously ended up at the bar, because someone had turned it in.

phew! just good vibes here.
