I've been an avid visitor of NYC since I was little, since most of my family lives here, I'd visit several times a year. So I've been all around, eaten at all sorts of different places etc, but it was never really personal until I moved here.
So I set out to find my own little places to love and tell my friends about.
First I wanted to start with something that seems simple, a pizza place.
Fascati's is only 2 streets over, I noticed it while walking the neighborhood, so I figured I'd start there.
And wow :D
Fantastic pizza, I mean really, I've eaten at countless places on my visits here, but this place is really great.
The customer service is friendly, it's always super busy. They don't seem to ever be too talkative/personal, which doesn't bother me.
When you order slices they add the toppings you want and throw it back in the oven for a few, so the pizza is always hot/fresh and you can get whatever you desire.
Since trying Fascati's, I've tried about 11 other pizza places, and it's still my favorite, and lucky for me it's just a short walk away.
Pizza is a very personal thing, I personally would highly recommend their pizza to everyone, I doubt anyone would truly dislike it.
The prices are fair, there isn't much seating room or anything amazing decor wise to write home about, but it's a pizza parlor, do we care?
Damn you Fascati's!
You pizza Nazis!!!
How dare you serve us a pie with chewy crust!
Found myself choking in flour dust.
The sauce is pretty bland.
Cheese tastes like rubber band.
Blah...This pizza I cannot stand!
Wow! What an awesome random find!
The food - mmm mmm mmm! The place serves your basic "design your own" pizza by the slice! I ordered my slice with mushroom + pepperoni and my fiance ordered the white ricotta napolitana pizza. WOW! Upon the first bite, I immediately exclaimed, "California pizza's got nothing on this!" The crust is firm and crispy, the sauce isn't too heavy nor overwhelming, the cheese is not overdone such that it'd be dripping with oil. I'm typically not a big fan of "white pizzas" but the riocotta was pretty good as well! It was just overall GREAT pizza.
They also serve cal zones and spaghetti etc. Check out their menu here: http://brooklyn.cityse...
The price - Reasonable. About $2.50/slice.
The ambiance - Your basic clean little pizza cafe, good amount of seating, lots of window space to allow light to come in. Plus it's not too loud. What a great casual hangout place! Plus, the scenery outside this cafe is excellent (near the water)!
The service - Friendly. You order you stuff, you get it and you eat it. Want anything else, just ask for it. Gosh, that was one good pizza... I miss it. =\
This place is the truth. Loaded with toppings, crisp tasty crust, good prices, and an Yankee hat dress code for employees. What's not to love
One of the best pizza places in Brooklyn that serves authentic, tasty Brooklyn slices without any hassle or issues. In fact, I consider this one of the true old-school NYC pizzerias right up there with DiFara's, Totonno's, Joes Pizza of Bleecker, L&B Spumoni and such.
Some people feel the dough is a tad flavorless though. But honestly, it's not doughy-white bread bad, it's nice and crusty and the sauce and cheese more than compensate.
During the summer, go for the Spumoni ices as well. Heck, if you don't want the pizza, at least get that Spumoni.
Real Brooklyn pizza at its best.
Its not fancy, but it's real and it's good. I mean really good. And isn't that all that really matters when it comes to pizza?
Seriously...go to Grimaldi's instead. Really. It's only like a five-minute walk from Fascati--it's just down that way, the one with the giant line and all the tourists taking pictures. You can't miss it.
Why did I give this restaurant five stars while referring you to the competition? Simple--more Fascati pizza for me.
One of my old friends took me to this place. I believe it was Fascati's!! He said he went here for years when he was in grade school as he grew up. And I remember the place being very narrow on the inside, near Promenade Park (one of the best views of NYC from Brooklyn), and looking aged on the inside of the building.
The pizza I had was thin-crust, very delicious, and it's known for its authentic Italian flavors. It is supposed to be THE BEST PIZZA PLACE! Instead of NY-style, it is Brooklyn-style thin crust pizza! I will have to visit it again to confirm my memory!!
Really good pizza for the last 30 years. I used to go here almost every day in grades 4-7 and that was a long time ago. Now I am back and loving it again. It is just as it should be, a pizza joint, no different than 25 years ago, but it maintains high quality in the pizza department.
$2.50 for a regular slice and they are the kind of pizza place that actually knows how long to place it back in the oven so the roof of your mouth does not end up feeling like you ate a box of Capt'n Crunch. The sausage is good too.
The pizza is not greasy at all and for any type of pizza stomach, 2 slices is really ideal. One just is not enough and two does the trick without pushing you over the edge.
When in a rush, they have a window on Henry that you can just tap on and order through it without ever going in and you have a slice to-go in seconds.
There is a lot of good pizza in New York, but I had remembered this place through all my travels for 25 years and now come back to it and love it as much as I did when I was a kid.
Disclaimer: I grew up in Brooklyn Heights and have been eating Fascati's since, well, since I was first eating. If you are at all into pizza, especially if you are into the "best pizza in NYC" thing. Go to Fascati's. Just go.
No, it's not an amazing interior, and no, I don't think I've ever gotten anything there but the pizza, but it's Brilliant. If you can manage it, get a slice that's been cooked, cooled and then needs to be reheated, I don't understand the science, but it's better that way. Delivered pizza doesn't seem to be as good either.
Outstanding cheese and sauce. The cardboard-like crust brings you back. Some may take offense, but if you embrace it you may find love.
This is the kinda place that doesn't change. I have been eating fresh, tasty pizza there for 14 years. This is the place I think of when I think of NY pizza. You don't go there to sit, though they have a few tables if you want to. You go there to get the awesome pizza and take it home, and enjoy the melty, yummy cheese ...
Alright, I can't review anymore. I'm stuck in Washington state till December and it doesn't help me to start salivating over something I can't have.
If you're in the mood for a real NY pizza and not the perfect gourmet fancy shmacy kind that you eat by candle light in a nice restaurant but the kind you have delivered or go pick up and watch while polishing off a pack of beer, this is your place. Fascati is awesome pizza at a reasonable price. For those too far to get it delivered or bring it home, they do have a bunch of tables to eat-in.
The inevitable pizza comparison! My friend and I went on a little pizza tour over the course of a few days and tried Fascati, Bleeker St. Pizza, Ray's Pizza (in NoLita). I've also had Grimaldi's, Lombardi's, and John's Pizzeria. This is not counting My Little Pizzeria, which is my regular pizza joint, being one block from my apartment or Lucali's, which I haven't tried yet.
Of this formidable collection, I have to say, Fascati is my current favorite. The crust is perfectly crisp underneath, and overall nicely chewy and flavorful. The cheese was gooey. The sauce was great. I was also really impressed with the white ricotta slice, with thick portions of creamy ricotta (no wimpy dollops here).
Incidentals? The service was friendly, the other customers were willing to share the red pepper flakes, and pizza was so good we had to trot out to the ATM across the street so we could order seconds.
The others on the list -- well, Bleeker St. Pizza is probably the runner up. Their slices were deeelicious, and the sicilian slice looked like heaven. It would've been perfect if the crust hadn't been overdone. Grimaldi's is a great experience, but the line and the lack of slice-availability sort of detract. Lombardi's is great for a plain pie, but as soon as you add some toppings on it, my experience is you get a soggy and overloaded pie without enough crust to hold it up. Ray's was nice, but the crust was sort of flavorless and a little too thick for my tastes. John's Pizzeria was good (there's no such thing as bad pizza, in my book... well, unless you're talking about Domino's) but unmemorable.
Now, now, now, I know pizza-preference is a highly controversial (lol) and very personal decision... but unless my forthcoming Lucali adventure is mind-blowing, I'm gonna have to say... Fascati Pizza, IMHO, is the best in the city. :)
Good NY style pizza; and a good price. I order from here all the time. The sauce and cheese are great. My favorite part of the pizza here is the crust; they are thinner then most, and perfectly prepared.
AWESOME pizza. I don't know what it is.... the cheese, the sauce, there's such a sweetness to everything. Fast window service which is good when you're walking a dog and want a snack! Don't miss
Definitely the best slice in Brooklyn Heights...and probably in the vicinity too.
I usually just get two slices of cheese and a soda -- I definitely miss their special though which was a killer deal -- about 6 months ago you could get that for $5.
But the pizza is consistently good -- cheese is good and the crust is just perfect. I kinda wish there was more seating though. And I tend to forget that the place is closed on Mondays. Ugh. I live like 3 blocks away and sometimes I forget and I have my Fascatis craving only to walk up there and see it closed. I only stick to their pizzas, but they offer a variety of subs and heroes and they look pretty amazing.
When we first arrived in Brooklyn, Fascati's was closed for remodeling or vacation. Its taken me 9 months to get back. It just happens to be conveniently located for jury duty obligations.
This place is clean and neat. The menu has a variety of pizzas, garlic twists, garlic bread, heros, rolls, and pasta dishes. My pizza slices were reasonably priced. The service was fast and friendly. The heavy lunch time crowd is conducive to shared tables (I ate with two neighborhood Fascati fans).
The new york style pizza consists of quality cheese, a thin, crisp crust (which is a rare feat). and a bland sauce. The pizza could be nearly perfect with a brighter, spicier sauce.
Condiments might have gone a long way in providing what the sauce was lacking. I'd suggest: black pepper, crushed red pepper, oregano, etc. Fascati only provides garlic powder and salt -- the two things I never add to pizza.
after reading lots of good to great reviews of this place, I have to say that I was severely dissapointed. I wasn't expecting anything out of this world (I hadn't heard anyone paint it as the best pizza in new york, by any means), but I was expecting a good little neighborhood pizza place with decent slices (since no one else in the neighborhood offers slices, that was my main incentive).
it wasn't horrible, but really, when is pizza ever truly horrible? it's bread with tomato sauce and cheese... no matter what goes wrong it's pretty tough to make a repulsive pizza. but with so many options for the stuff in new york, I don't see why anyone would come here regularly. I had one pepperoni and one cheese, and both were about as limp as a wet dishrag. should have gotten takeout from grimaldi's instead.
I'm sort of miffed. what's the deal? am I missing something (maybe their whole pies are better) or am I just alone in thinking this place isn't anything special?
The first few bites made me think ,"wow this pizza is amazing"...but then towards the end I thought it was okay. It got a bit dry after awhile for me. But I'll probably come back again.
For breakfast, I had pizza. I admit it.
My sister and I were taking a late morning walk around Brooklyn Heights. We passed by Fascati and she started raving about how good their pizza was. Well, we went and they were closed till 12. We walked around the area for another half hour and came back again. I was craving a good NY slice.
We sat down and ate our pizzas. I hate to say I was disappointed. Not that I was disappointed for real, since it is NY pizza. But it didn't live up to my expectations of what good pizza should be. It wasn't bad either, I just had high hopes. The one thing I did love was the super thin crust.
At $2.50 a slice, it will hold your appetite over for a bit if you're walking around the area.
Only a fair pie. The crust is winsome -- almost cardboard in contrast to Grimaldi's, just down the road.
It's Pizza, what do you want?
I've gone in at all times of the day and had a decent slice with no complaints. great for a quick lunch, or a light dinner. Good crunchy crust and a good sauce to cheese ratio. The white slice is also pretty good.
The place is often crowded, but it's easy enough to stop a guy behind the counter, hand him a $5 and yell "2 for here."
The only time the slice is ever mediocre is after a long re-heat. But even then it remain good for a while after being "fresh."
Did you know neuroscientists could rap? Check it out, yo.
I want me some Fascati's
Cause they know how to pah-ty
Way better than Grimaldi's
Dat pizza's never faulty
So hot and good and greasy
and cheese that's supa cheesy
Yo, throw some olives on my pie
and mushrooms too, 'cause they so fly.
I'd make the trek to BK Heights
from down in DUMBO any night
to eat yo' slices 'til I'm full
then roll my ass back down the hill.
I hate to say it, but really nothing special. I came during lunch and got the lunch special (slice and can of soda, $5). The cheese slice was basic.
I read a review once saying you know it's good pizza when even the crust has a flavor. Needless to say, I threw away my crust.
Not worth all the hype. Fine pizza place, but as I said, I don't think it was anything special.
Somewhat frustrating establishment in my mind. In many ways I love this place, I really appreciate the retro look from the outside and the sidewalk window for ordering is appreciated. However, this place really suffers from a lack of consistency. Sometimes the pizza is outrageously good and sometimes lackluster. Not only is it inconsistent but it doesn't even have consistency with its faults... sometimes the pizza has too little sauce, sometimes the crust has a crunchy stale taste, sometimes the cheese is unbearably salty... All this having been said, when they get it dead on this is some of the best pizza I have ever had.
The best slice in the neighborhood, hands down. It's been around since I was a kid and I remember getting excited whenever I heard my parents mention that name, because it always meant that they were too busy or too tired to cook up something healthy like brussel sprouts and we were going to have wonderful PIZZA for dinner!!!! YAY, said the little Martha!
It's something about the cheese that they use there. Maybe there's an overdose of salt in there, maybe it's crack, I don't know. Maybe salt is crack's sister and maybe that's why I like it so much.
Very old school vibe there. Get a grape drink to go with your slice.
Fascati's is the bomb diggitty and then some. I've eaten probably upwards of 200 pies from there over the past 4 years, not to mention they've got the meanest meatball parm this side of gardenia. Also, in a neighborhood somewhat devoid of decent delivery, in a pinch you can get a decent spaghetti & meatballs or sausage from them. I recomend topping your pie w/ ricotta and sausage - divine! It's the more BK pizzeria alternative to Grimaldi's, which is equally divine in a different way.
Every time I pass by Fascati's in August during the summer closing and see the sign that they are closed for vacation, I cry a little.
Martha, they definitely put crack in their cheese.
Fascati's is the unsung pizza hero of BH.
The pizza is bomb, especially when it's well done, and you can order by the slice. It reminds me a lot of Johnny's in Mount Vernon, with slightly thicker crust. Not too greasy, not too drippy and perfectly (perfectly) crunchy. Fascati's has a charming storefront, too, where you can order from outside and watch other pies being prepared by the super friendly guys inside.
Sadly, it's closed for vacation until early September.
Before I get to the review, a complaint: I've been in NYC for four days. It's looked like it was going to rain every day, so I've been hauling around an umbrella. Today, I leave without it and, as I'm carrying my pizza back, it starts to rain. So awesome. Don't worry: the pizza was fine.
Anyway, I'm staying in Brooklyn, and had to get some pizza. Fascati was well reviewed here and it's close to the mediocre $400/night hotel I'm at, so i figured I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did: it's pretty good pizza. The crust is thin, brown on the bottom, and the sauce is great. It took about 10 minutes for a pizza. A small with a salad was $19. And that small could feed three people, easy.
But is this the best pizza in the universe? Meh. The pepperoni slices were small, which I like, but the mushrooms were freaky. (Canned or sauteed and then left to sit a while. Everything else looked fresh, so why not the mushrooms?) Worth noting, however, is that some of my local Chicago pizzerias could take a lesson from these guys on how to do a decent garden salad. Yes, it had iceberg in it, but it also had tomatoes, green pepper, onion, cucumbers and what tasted like a fresh, made very recently vinaigrette.
Overall, not the end-all-be-all in my pizza universe, but very decent.
No better pizza in the Heights! Why wait on line in the rain and cold at the tourist trap competition down the hill?? This is THE place for pizza.
This place has the best slices in Brooklyn (the best in Manhattan is Joe's). Whenever I come back to Brooklyn, I always make a point of going to Fascati's at least a couple of times. I've been going to Fascati's for about 10-12 years now, and have always been pleased. Back in the day, the "Fascati special" (2 slices, plus soda can), was only 3 bucks. However, sadly that price has risen to around 4 bucks (maybe even $4.50 now). But, I'm a loyalist and won't let that get in my way of phenomenal pizza.
The pizza here is thin with crispy crust...simply the best. I think the most amazing thing about Fascati's is its consistency. Whereas some places are hit or miss, the pizza here is consistently between a 9 and 9.7 (higher scores reserved for Grimaldi's). In addition to the delicious pizza, I highly recommend the garlic knots (5/$1). I've also tried some of the pastas a few times and have always found them to be delicious as well. The next time you find yourself in Brooklyn Heights, be sure to hit up Fascati Pizza. You won't be disappointed.
I grew up in the Heights and just moved back after a 6 year absence.
A lot has changed - new stores, more people, different resturaunts.
Fiscatis hasn't. Consitentley delicious and fresh pizza. The price of a slice has gone up (since I was 5) but thats about it.
Also, delicious italian ices in the summer.
Note: If you like toppings, best to order a pie - otherwise they just stick them on and put the slice in the oven again.
I love this pizza. I love this pizza so much that I still have their number in my cell phone and I haven't lived in Brooklyn Heights for over a year. I know that Grimaldi's is the big thing in the area but when it comes to 2 slices and a soda for $4.50 nothing can compare.
Try their meatball subs as well, they're big but I always managed to eat the whole thing in one sitting.
If you're in a rush you can even order through the window, grab a slice to go. The staff is great, very friendly small town feel.
Fascati has great regular slices. You an have pretty much any topping such as pepperoni, sausage, meatball, basil etc. Pretty much anything. The key is they're plain slices are always fresh out of the oven. But their sicilian is not too great. They don't really keep coming out with new pies every 10 minutes. But anyway, I urge you to go get some pizza from Fascati.
I like the pizza here but if you only want slices, you pretty much have to be in the mood for a plain slice because they never have slices w/ toppings available (unless you order a pie). If you order w/ a topping they put on the topping and throw it in the oven. That never makes for a good slice. Also, they always run out of rolls (e.g. chicken roll) even if it's early in the day (like noon). They also close for 1 month a year (early August through early September). That said, I do tend to eat their plain slices fairly often (partly out of convenience). The slices are not all that filling though 2 slices is usually good enough. If you're pretty hungry, though, it'll leave you wanting a little bit more (at least to me). Their pizza is good but not terrific. Honestly, I'm a little surprised at how good the reviews are of this place. This is NOT amazing pizza but rather a better-than-average slice. I'd probably rate them 3 1/2 stars if yelp allowed that.
No eateries in Brooklyn Heights merit a special trip. Fascati might come close. Slice of white pizza: to. die. for.
Basically, I grew up eating Fascati's so I'm biased. It might have accounted for 10% of my caloric intake and 90% of my yumminess intake between the ages of 7 and 17. Brooklyn Heights has never been the Italian-American bastion that other nearby hoods were/are, but Fascati represents massively. The pies and slices never disappoint and consistency is king here. For over 30 years, through a couple of generations, Fascati has turned out a beautiful high-quality product. While I am a purist, the toppings are great and don't wreck the crust. The Sicilian slices are good, but the winner is the Neapolitan. Other menu items are tasty, particularly the hot heros. Salads are generous. Go if you live in NYC. Go if you are visiting. Go.
surprisingly good!
the sauce is really good. the cheese is not the fresh, thinly sliced, sparingly-placed mozz like Grimaldis. it the shredded, cover the entire pie (twice) kind. But its good im telling you.
The pepperoni is thickly sliced which is awesome. The mushrooms are tasty.
Those are the only two topping ive gotten.
Its an above average NY pie that people in the hood can appreciate. But no, theres no reason to run to Henry Street for it. you can walk.
I work down in DUMBO but it always worth the walk up to Fascati's to get some Pizza - especially when the sun is shining and you can grab it go and eat it outside. In this part of town, this is the place to grab a slice. Great sauce, great crust, always hot slices available.
