tiny update:
Ordered the reuben here this morning. It was enormous. I can't believe i ate it all. It was served with potato salad, the portion of which was equally enormous, and a pickle and little container of cole slaw (not so great).
My roommate got the italian wrap (chicken parm in a wrap) which sounded completely unappealing to me, but he said it was great. He asked for a side of marinara sauce and was brought a large bowl and no additional charge.
The omelette our buddy got was quite large, but also quite pricey at $8 (more than my insanely large reuben or my roommate's wrap) for just mushrooms and cheese. It comes with a generous serving of home fires.

In a nutshell: solid diner fare, nice place, nice staff (we'll just hope for another waiter next… Read more »
Last time I went there, I swear I got food poisoning.
I had a half dozen friends in town this weekend, and we ate 2/3 breakfasts here. Everyone loved what they ate, and I have learned that the pancakes without the fruit are really amazing. The canadian bacon? Perfect.
So I take back what I said about the "meh" food. Just don't get the cold fruit topping on your warm pancakes.
Also, the service continues to impress me. No matter how many people, 2, 4, 8, you get your food fast, hot and with a smile.
And all for cheap!

Sorry, Faros, you just don't cut it. Your food is bad, it's hot as hell inside, plenty of flies, and not quite cheap enough to make it worth it. Nice people, though. My friend ordered eggs with grits. Haha, we should have taken a picture. Watery white stuff with two gross eyes peeking out.
Never again! I have lived down the street from Faros for ten years. If you are just going for simple eggs and bacon I guess it's ok, but I am not going back to Faro's because if you have dietary restrictions they really don't cater to that. Yes. I understand it is a bare bones Brooklyn diner, but the owner was extremely rude to me because I questioned why i was charged extra for my omelette.. which i order without potatoes or toast, and in place i get lettuce and tomato on the side. Not only did they charge me full price for my omelette, but then i get charged extra for my iceberg and tomato on the side. I questioned the owner saying very politely..if I'm not getting potatoes or toast why do i have to pay extra for a piece of lettuce. She shoved the menu at me and said take a menu and read it! as if I was some cheapo trying to get one over on them. I was just asking as a regular customer why they didn't have a way to substitute for me. I have walked out of there spending $10 bucks on a omelette with none of the sides..just the eggs. don't get it? I told the woman I would never be back. I understand I live in Kensington, and we really don't have many good food options out here. But why must we assume that people on a budget don't like to watch what they eat or have dietary restrictions..and why should I pay more for less.. Connie's diner down the street serves salad on the side to substitute for homefries and toast..I will be going there from now on!
Try the chicken triple decker! Its great with a side of pickles, coleslaw, and fries. In general their selection is pretty broad. From Gyros and burgers, to decent chicken parm. It's a family run dinner, with a good atmosphere, and decent folks.
Its KENSINGTON!

I like Faros very much. It's a good local diner. The waitresses are friendly, the food is pretty good, the prices are moderate (maybe a little too much), and the decor is cheery. The donuts are large and delicious.
Downsides are the booths - the person on the other side of you can barely move without making the whole booth move. They need to nail those things down. And once I saw the cook make an egg white omelette and to take the yolk out, he stuck his bare (ungloved) hand in the dish and scooped it out. Uh, hold the arm hair, please.
Other huge turn off is the 2-cup limit on coffee -- come on!! It's not like I am going to sit there and drink the place dry. And they really need to change the dopey Z100 music.
Overall though, I recommend this place. It would be nice if, in the spirit of a real diner, they were open later than 6pm and took credit cards.
There are certain places that I will never go back and this is one of them.
After such a poor experience, I've had it with Faros. Before the remodeling about 5 years ago, the place was disgusting. The tables were sticky and the cutlery were dirty. There were constant mosquitos flying above me while I try to enjoy my food. After the renovation, the place looked very decent and comfortable for the average diner. OK, my bf and I decided to order a triple decker with fries and I decided to order a grilled chicken sandwich. The wait staff screwed up my order and added two orders of fries when I requested only one. I said it's fine and I would pay for the two orders of fries. Then I get my bill and it is about $20.00 for two sandwiches with fries. I was completely outraged and I asked them about the extra charges. They said they charged me for lettuce and tomatoes and the whole nine. I order the basic fare and they decided to slap extras on it thinking I would not notice. I don't think so. Then they told me the menu is new and they didn't know how much the sandwich was supposed to cost. Nonetheless, you do not do that to a customer. My bf and I just walked out without paying for the food. Good riddence Faros!

Faros is a diamond in the rough. Kensington isn't known as an able-bodied area of the Brooklyn borough that is robust in it's sit down restaurants. Faros, however has become one of my regulars spots when I'm looking for a cheap eats in a cozy dinner atmosphere minus the greasy spoon savor.
Breakfast is amazing here, from the overflowing apple cinnamon pancakes to the Greek omelet well equipped with enough meat to give you a heart attack ~ Faros is the community breakfast nook. That and no matter what you order, food for two will never be above $15.

i get breakfasts there a lot. the food is good and prices are ok. the burgers are so-so, not bad really but just kind of regular, maybe a little small in the patty haha
anyway, they do the lamest thing at faro's. when you order a coffee, they wont give you more than ONE refill. every diner ive ever been to, EVER, ANYWHERE, will just keep filling it up. it's not like im gonna sit there all day and drink coffee. but if i wanna have a third cup with my omelette, they'll charge me an extra $1.25 or whatever it is. and i think that is pretty lame.
but the food IS pretty good. i like the chocolate donuts too. the service is good.
but the coffee thing is wack. in my imagination it's a rule they instituted when too many kensington/church ave weirdos would hang out there all day and drink the place dry. but that's not me on a tuesday morning wanting a little more coffee.
and re: their choice in music. i guess KTU is kinda ok sometimes. but a lot of times they play contemporary pop garbage. i like hearing diamond girl over and over though. sometimes it's worse, they play that "lite" station they always have blaring at the diner on 5th ave and 8th street in park slope (worst f'ing station ever, good diner tho)..one time, after listening to 35 minutes of lite hell, i asked the older lady who appears to run the place "you ever actually LISTEN to this stuff??" and pointed up in the air. she shrugged and said no. i said EXACTLY, cuz if you did youd change the station! and all the waitresses started laughing. i rule.
anyway, faro's is pretty good. it's be a lot better if they had good taste in music and did away with the coffee rules. but in K town it's kinda all we've got! so i'll take it, happily.

One of the better places to eat if you're in the Kensington area.
The food is solid American-Greek diner fare. They do a superb job with breakfast, which is served all day. Eggs are always fresh and perfectly cooked (the omelettes are popular, but I prefer my eggs sunny side up). Pancakes are big and fluffy and can be served plain with some butter and syrup, or overflowing with delicious fruit. The bacon is on the crisp rather than chewy side, but I like it that way.
Minor criticism: the waiters will (inexplicably) ask you if you'd like french fries, yellow rice, or mashed potato with your breakfast special (???). Ignore these weird choices, and ask for hash browns or corned beef hash, both of which are righteous, on the side. Also, if you like your toast crispy and brown, make sure you specify that, otherwise you tend to get some very lightly toasted bread.
Make sure to order a big ol' glass of fresh squeezed OJ with your breakfast or brunch. It is delicious, and actually fresh squeezed when you place your order.
The lunch selections include your standard burgers, Reubens, salads, and tuna melts, and they're solid. The fries are crispy, the rye bread is very good, and the coleslaw and pickles are toothsome.
I haven't tried the dinner entrees, although they look inviting (choices include roast chicken with yellow rice, london broil, meatloaf, salmon, etc.)
Service is extremely attentive and friendly, and the prices are about half what I'm used to paying in New York for a sit-down meal. Eight bucks buys you a hearty brunch or lunch, and that's a great value in my book.
My only gripe is that it can get a little stuffy in the summer time - they should really install a powerful AC unit. Although not having good AC probably helps to keep the costs (and prices) low, so I'm not sure that would be such a great improvement. Also, if they served beer - even bottled beer - this place would be just about perfect.
Cash only, and it's open as early as 6 am, which makes it a perfect place to grab a coffee and some carbs before commuting into work.

I second the community vibe run by good people, but the food was a pretty average diner breakfast...which is fine, but I have that in my nabe so I probably won't return.
greatly improved from the faros of old. good pancakes and diner fare. good service,

This place has been getting more foot traffic ever since they remodeled. Staff can get kind of grumpy towards closing time but they're generally nice people. It's a cozy place with exposed brick walls, cute diner decor, and spotlights running down the walls. Breakfast is great here - large portions and friendly waiters - I haven't tried lunch yet. Food isn't dirt cheap but prices are decent and you get more than what you pay for. As the sign in their window [used to?] say, "Why go to Park Slope when you can go to Faro's?"
