Sylvia is as good as it gets. No one cuts my hair with the same degree of style and perfection. Last time, I asked for a bit of a change, and described the feeling I wanted: stylish but acting my age (i.e. I'm not 25 anymore!). She styled it with that exact feeling. Of course, I couldn't get it to look as she did in the salon, but it still looks great! She's also easy to talk to, and very reasonably-priced.
I highly, highly recommend Sylvia at Fancy Salon.Listed in: Portland for Newbies

Whoops! My first visit to Fancy was a perfect storm of unfortunate incidents...
I let them know when I made the appt that I had to be out by a certain time to make a hockey game, they said no problem - but when I showed up my stylist was running behind because she was correcting a coloring-gone-bad. I had to wait 35 min. past my appt time to be taken back. While I was waiting, I borrowed the bathroom key, which is shared by all the businesses in the building and is outside and down a ways. It was raining sideways at the time, so not so pleasant. Unfortunately, through no fault of Fancy, the bathroom was filthy and smelled as if someone had been smoking in there like 5 minutes before me. Totally GROSS. I went back for my haircut, made uncomfortable smalltalk with the stylist, and finished up in a flash. The haircut was fine. But they don't take credit cards, and somehow I missed that detail when I booked. She asked me at the end of my cut, "I don't take anything but cash or check, is that ok?" Bad time to ask! So I had to run to the bank.
Anyways, on another day, with a different stylist, on time, clean bathroom, probably would have been AOK. At least the haircut was good. -

As of writing this review, I am a two-week-old transplant into the great city of Portland, OR. I've spent my entire life in the northeast and have become accustomed to my certain staples - my doctor, my dentist, and my hair stylist. So, you could understand how one of my first tasks after getting internet connectivity in my apartment was to find my new Portland counterparts for these roles.
Enter Sylvia at Fancy Salon (more for the hair stylization and less for the bi-annual dental cleanings). I found Sylvia after reading reviews here on Yelp and thought, "Ok, that was easy". And, you know what? It really was.
I showed up to my appointment after a long day at work. I was so happy to see a comfy little tea bar available, so I helped myself to some of it. Perfect way to start the appointment.
Sylvia was beyond friendly and cordial and really redefined what getting a haircut should be about. She was a collaborator and you could tell that she cares about what she does. She takes her time and is a great, mild-mannered conversationalist.
Ultimately, I walked out of this well-maintained and cozy salon extremely happy and already looking forward to my next appointment.
Thanks for everything, Sylvia! You rock! -

I have really curly hair. As a newcomer to Portland, and a girl who has had a slew of bad hair experiences, I was super nervous about finding a new salon. Jen changed all of that. Never have I had a hairdresser handle curly hair with so much confidence. She was friendly, kind, and knew exactly what I needed. Even after washing my hair and styling it myself, the cut looks absolutely fantastic. The salon is clean and eco-friendly. Everyone is nice. I recommend the salon to everyone and Jen to anyone with unruly curls. She's wonderful!

I loooove the ladies at Fancy! I am a little heartbroken that Brenda moved away, she was amazing, but Alicia has stepped in to help my hair through a few transitional issues. She is an absolute doll and a great hairdresser.

I went to Fancy Salon upon reading such great reviews about Jen. I needed to have a botched color job fixed and my hair cut. She was wonderful and did such a great job on both. I left feeling satisfied with my haircut and the color was so much better than before. A few weeks after receiving such great service I received a very hostile voice message from Jen about me leaving a terrible review about her services on a website. I did no such thing. I called her back left a message telling her this. I did receive a call back. This time it was a reluctant apology. Not by any means sincere. More of a 'I'm just saying I'm sorry but I don't believe you'. After that interaction I was soured. I will never go back and I will never recommend anyone to her or that salon. I strongly believe this was highly unprofessional behavior. I would never treat a customer/client that way.

Alicia kicks ass. That's all there is to it. I saw Brenda before she moved (sad face) and she said "Alicia's the only one I let touch my hair." Um, new mantra. I saw Alicia last night to whack my shoulder-length hair off to a punk-rock pixie cut that I (and my coworkers, although they could be lying) adore. She's genuinely friendly, cool as hell, and seems to really know her shit. If reading her bio on the Fancy site doesn't convince you ("I'll never give you 'Mom hair,' but I will give you something that suits you and your lifestyle"), you have no soul.

Today I went to have my haircut by Emie. I am always skeptical about new hairstylists because I have been dooped in the past. Based on Fancy Salon's good reviews I thought, hell, I'll give her a shot.
She was very patient with me as I am very picky about my style and color. She asked questions to make sure she understood the look I was going for and mixed two different colors perfectly to get the exact shade I wanted.
I called her at 4pm today and she had me in by 5 and stayed late to make sure the job was done well. (Amazing service!)
Everything was reasonably priced and she even gave me a student discount on the haircut. My hair feels and looks great again!
Thanks Emie, you are awesome! -

Usually when a place has a ton of awesome reviews, I don't feel the need/ desire to post as well, but I wanted to give a shout out to Jen, another stylist at Fancy Salon. After reading all the awesome reviews here I checked out Fancy Salon's website, which I liked because it gave you background on all their stylists. I chose Jen and I have gotten two cuts from her now and both have been fabulous. I would definitely consider her my hair stylist now and recommend her to anyone. She is lovely and she totally gets and understands my hair.
Oh, and another thing I really like about this salon - you can book online. And when you book you can choose your stylist, the type of appointment and then find an appointment time that works for you and see all of what is open and available. (I always hate back and forth of the "No that time doesn't work, what about...." when you call in some place). -

This is a salon with character, talent, and a pretty amazing gangster rap soundtrack. Its hours work well for those with an 8-5 schedule, and the price ain't bad.
Fancy Salon, specifically Sylvia, is a lifesaver. After a terrible experience at a "Manly Man's" salon elsewhere in town, during which the stylist forgot to do the back of my head and gave me an unwanted mullet, Sylvia came through in a pinch and saved the day. She knows how to deal with a guy's hair. Most importantly, she knows how to deal with MY hair, which grows straight out and accentuates the lightbulbedness of my dome.
I never have a problem booking an appointment with short notice (on Saturdays and even after 5!) and the price is decent ($30 for a men's cut). Occasionally I've had to wait 10 minutes or so past my scheduled appointment start time, but I'm usually running late anyway, so I call it a wash.
If it weren't for my stodgy office job, I'd be very tempted to get a more "creative" cut. I can tell the folks at Fancy Salon have a creative streak, and I would love to put it to use.
I'll be leaving Portland soon and I'm sad I can't take Fancy Salon with me. But because Sylvia's cuts grow in so nicely, I may be able to survive until my next trip back to Portland in 8-12 months. -

I love the Fancy Salon! Heather is talented at cutting hair, and fun to hang with. I have even had my son in there getting his pre-picture day haircut. (with a purple stripe in the bangs just for fun!)
They have a convenient location, onsite parking, and good restaurants nearby for a quick lunch or dinner after the haircut. -

I'm in love.
I've had nothing but bad, bad, bad experience with salons, whether for cut or color. Probably the only thing I've ever truly been satisfied with is a hair wash and flat iron -- kind of hard to screw that up. But, I swear, is it me -- the way I explain things? Or is it my "unique" needs (multiple colors, blended randomly but "just so" in my long, curly, thick hair)? I dunno, but I can pretty much say with certainty that I've had to "fix" whatever the stylist did, especially color.
I've been coloring (and cutting) my own hair for years, and I have developed some pretty specific twists and turns of how I like things done. Now, granted, I managed to end up with some pretty brassy highlights this last time around, plus I was giving myself the ol' "chemical cut" from bleaching out too much. So, I decided I really needed to get myself to a professional salon, STAT.
It was YELP that led me to Fancy! in the first place. Such rave reviews, especially this one chick, Brenda. So, I schedule a consult and go in and talk to her for 20 minutes, showing her pictures of my hair on a good day combined with a pic of what it might look like on a great day. I go on and on, and she had me convinced she could do it -- except at the last minute she surprises me by telling me that was her last day! Brenda was nice enough to come in the very next day just for me, to give me a Brazilian smooth. She did an excellent job, and I'd return to her in a heartbeat, but she's gone -- so Brenda isn't the real reason I'm writing.
Alicia -- she's da bomb. Thank you to Brenda for referring me to Alicia right there at Fancy! I made an Internet appt. and went in, and she consulted with me for a full half hour. We picked colors together, and I was completely confident that she'd give me either pretty much exactly what I wanted or something better. The timer went off and a shampoo and blow-out later, and voila! My hair was . . . not exactly what we had been looking for. For the first time EVER, though, I did not feel my heart sink. Alicia and I were on the exact same page. She spoke to me like an equal, explaining to me why we didn't get the exact colors we wanted. Now, mind you, we were doing about six different colors. They were all PERFECT except the top layer -- yep, the one that shows the most. But it was obvious to both of us what had gone awry. I mean, Alica had been working with my original six layers of self-coloring, and we just had no way of knowing how my own top-level bleach-out would absorb the new color. It took Alicia just minutes to figure out a fix, and then 15 minutes later, voila! My hair was perfect.
It might have taken three hours, but my multifaceted color is absolutely FLAWLESS, and, believe me, I had a challenging head of hair from the get-go. Alicia's work is just gorgeous. And now I'm even thinking of getting a little snip here and there to show off some of the colors I've traditionally hidden underneath. I spent a lot on the color (given the six colors and three hours), but prices for cuts look very reasonable!
So, finally, I have found my colorist, and I am fully confident about other services she'll provide. And, not just that, but Alicia proved to be great for conversation. Sure, I brought a book, but she and I had so much in common that we talked like long-time girlfriends over coffee.
Considering my two experiences with two different stylists at Fancy!, I have to conclude that this salon is a definite gem, a real stand-out among salons in this city. As for Alicia, I've found my stylistic soulmate! I have never before been ablle to say that my hair is PERFECT. Thank you, Alicia! -

I love when business owners try to cover their tracks and tell a fabricated story. Keep in mind when reading the owner's response, I know what color my daughter was asking for, it was not pink. She has been wanting the same color for a very long time, had been so excited to get it done, and was quite upset about what happened at this salon.
I have also talked to several MORE stylists since then, and not a single one agrees with their technique. First of all, when dark hair is lightened to be colored red, it should not be bleached to white. The color will fade very fast. And somehow I've had my hair bleached to white several times, never taking more than one bleaching. Have I mentioned that my hair is darker than hers?
Keep your back peddling to yourself. It was a sleezy practice and I would never suggest this salon to anyone who wants a stylist, especially one who knows how to do color. These girls obviously don't.1 Previous Review: Show all »

A few weeks ago, I had a real itch for a new cut. I also wanted to switch things up a bit and try a new salon, which is unlike me (I've been going to the same salon, and the same stylist for years).
Anyways, relying on YELP, I found Fancy Salon, and I am very happy about it. I was able to book online after reading about each stylist's personal bio on their website. I booked with Alicia and was able to get in the very next morning.
$40 bucks for a hair cut is pretty damn good, especially with my level of nitpickiness- is that a word? In my experience its very hard to get my Asian hair to look textured without having to use a lot of product or a styling tricks. After giving Alicia the low down of my needs and wants, she gave me a cut that allows me to pretty much do whatever I want (or don't want) to it. Super simple, with a little edge. It looks great to me, and I use almost no product or heat tools to style my hair in the morning, big plus!
Maybe I'll go back for a color soon :) -
Review from Manda B.
About 4 years ago I started growing my hair out with the idea that I will achieve mass gorgeousness like Liv Tyler from Lord of the Rings. I achieved the long lush length and all was awesome until one day I was having a dumb "omg my hair is boring let's do something crazy to it!" day and found myself sitting in a chair at a "punk rock" barber shop which I will not name (Miller High Life anyone?) getting a hipster mullet...
This is where it all turned awful. I'm not blaming the gal that chopped my hair into hipster emo crap - it was my fault for running to the barber shop instead of booking an appointment at a trust-worthy salon, it was my bad that I said I didn't care what she did - I wanted volume.... but MAN! Come on.
After a month of lugging my stupid "party mullet" all around town - acting like I was ok with it, I had enough and cried surrender. I had my fill of looking like trailer trash straight from the Piggly-Wiggly parking lot (not that there's anything wrong with that...).
My friend suggested I visit The Fancy Salon. She'd been going there for a while and loved her stylist. The gal she referred me to wasn't in that day, but Sylvia was... I am SOOOO glad too. Sylvia rocked my world!
In order to get the full mullet GONE she had to cut it down to a pretty short textured bob. I kept telling her - go shorter! No mullet!!! and so she changed the radio station to a dance-bootie-party station and went to work.
Awesome things I can say about this place:
* Super cute & chill little salon tucked away on Division
* Open late - I called at 5 and got an appointment for 7, stayed till 9!
Awesome things I can say about Sylvia:
* amazing head massage while she was washing my hair
* adorable gal with a giggle that slices my hair woes away
* what a great attitude and sense of humor she has!
* best haircut I've had in a really long time
* although I was upset with chopping the rest of my hair off (stupid mullet) Sylvia made me feel gorgeous and brought excitement to the situation.
My hair looks AMAZING and I'm planning on sticking with Sylvia forever and ever. -

Portland, OR
This is the 3rd salon I've been to here in Portland. I've never really considered myself to be too picky so it's actually rather strange that I haven't been happy with a stylist until now.
I came in first for just a bang trim (expecting to pay) and wasn't charged, which was sweet and unexpected so I made sure to schedule an appointment here when I was due for a full cut. I scheduled with Brenda, since she did my trim. My first service here was a full-color and a cut. I have been very hesitant about coloring my hair as I've had a lot of bad experiences damaging it and I have long hair that I'd like to keep as healthy as possible. Brenda did a wonderful, even, fast and beautiful color on my hair. My appointment was 3 months ago and I'm blown away that it's still red! I've had a lot of hair colors and I've NEVER had a red stick this well, this long. Also, my cut was perfect. I want to keep the length of my hair and when I asked her to take as little as possible, I left there feeling like my hair lost it's dry ends, was healthy and smooth and that I didn't lose any length. Also, I ended up leaving with the product she used in my hair and not because she told me I should or tried to up-sell me, which I hate. She was very informative about some different options for my particular hair-type and I inquired as to the price and she gladly set me up as well as GAVE me some shampoo to help hold the color. I have another appointment with her coming up and so it is certain, I have found a Portland salon.
Also, not that it's any of my business to comment but as a stranger to this business and its staff, with little or no bias regarding their services, I'd like to add in response to that contemptuous 1-star-review below, that just because you are entitled to your own opinion on Yelp, does not always mean you should chose to voice it. Not everything will always work for everyone and I'm so tired of these circumstantial bashings on Yelp. Your story sounds like a miscommunicated and unfortunate mishap which took end on YOUR part. Don't get worked up, if you want to inform the public, sound professional and informative, not spiteful and negative. Yelp should really use a more subjective form of filtering their reviews. -

Lu rocks! She listens, recommends but never pushes. Her hair cuts look good for months. I've been going to her for years - since back at Gilly Salon. She is a cute little sprite that will make you feel like her girlfriend. She also cut my husbands curly, difficult and hair and it looked great.
The prices at Fancy Salon are not high. The salon is a new but is starting to gain some character. The name is unfortunate...but I'll take it for a great haircut. -

Finding a new stylist is like finding a good physician, can we all agree? Here is why I love Fancy Salon.
1. Great yelp reviews.
2. Alicia, the sytlist I chose was punk rock, cute and knew her stuff.
3. I booked an appointment ONLINE. Ye-ah.
4. Great location and "fancy" salon.
5. The price...
I found Fancy Salon on Yelp and was able to make an appointment online, which seriously excited me. I received a confirmation text right away and one the day before my appointment. Score!
I chose Alicia because she was a little edgy and very punk rock. I wanted a different cut and she seemed perfect! She was awesome, talkative and did a wonderful job on my hair!! I cannot wait to go back for some color now. I have actually had strangers stop me and ask me where I got my hair done and I am getting compliments left and right!
The salon is cute and clean, everyone seems super nice and I had a great time bs'ing with Alicia the whole time she cut my hair. I can't wait to go back!! Oh, and my haircut was only 35.00 bucks and for checking on on Yelp, you get 5 bucks off! Sold yet? -

I absolutely love this place. I have been going for quite some time now and I will never go anywhere else.
I have gone to Brenda for a cut, style and color- all amazing. I have very long unruly hair that is quite unmanageable and she works her magic every time. I come out of the salon with sleek shiny, soft hair! Yay!
Sylvia is also an amazing stylist; Ive gotten a cut, color and style from her also and I always love the results. She takes her time and is a perfectionist so I never have to worry that things don't look totally perfect- I highly recommend her! -

I've been cutting and dying my hair myself for the last 2 years. Big mistake. I used yelp to find a salon near my hood and volia! made my appt for the following week. Their website helped me determine the right stylist for me. I wanted something wild and sexy, not soccer mom. I knew Alicia would be perfect.
She worked on my hair for 3 hours! She had to get rid of the awful black dye job that I did, returning my hair to it's natural dark brown. Then she cut off over an inch, making my hair look LONGER and more healthy. The final step was giving me lovely long bangs. yippie! I will never do my hair myself again. Thank you thank you Alicia!! Great atmosphere too. Nice and homey. Stylists were all super friendly, the music was good and tons of great magazines to read while you wait! I'll be back in 3 months! Actually, sooner for my free bang trim. -

I love Allison! I can definitely say she has given me the best haircuts I've ever had.
I kept my hair long for years because every time I tried to get a cute short cut, I would inevitably get some horrible, too angled bob meant for straight hair (mine is wavy) that turned into a suburban mall mom-looking nightmare (j/k suburban moms, I know y'all love your macy's fashions!).
No more! I had enough of long hair (you never want to be one of these pony-lookin' ladies who seem to think they're hoarding their wealth in hair), and had heard great things about Fancy from other people with cute cuts. Allison's portfolio looked great and also her bio mentioned her love of dogs and the Blazers, plus she had a sweet MercPerks deal! Done and done!
Two visits later, I am so glad I found her! She took my blah long hair to a rich chocolate brown, and gave me the sassy wave-friendly short cut I've been searching for so long. Hooray! Good hair for everyone! -

I just moved to Portland and I LOVED my stylist from my salon back home so I was nervous and sad to look for a new one!
I like unique cuts and colors, I like a little fun with my hair!
I choose Alica to cut and color my hair, she was so nice and took all my pictures and random explanation and created a wonderful look for me!
I had a great time chatting and in the end i LOVED my hair! 3 months later and I am still getting complements on it (even though it is a little grown out)
She was great, the salon was great, my hair was great! -

As a person with super thick long bleach blonde hair, I am pretty cautious about new salons. My regular stylist was out of town, and I didn't feel like doing my own roots. I was drawn to this place because they had specific services for bleach. It also had pretty good reviews. But I still called ahead, I got reassurance, and got a price from the owner--who ended up doing the color. My hair can take a lot of heat and I don't consider myself picky. I understand that what I do to my hair is damaging, unpredictable, and risky. I don't mind if my stylist makes mistakes.
This was the worst salon experience of my life. I was in the chair for three hours, and came out with bright yellow roots, and damage that I'm still treating six months later. In addition to this, I got a worse than bishop's bang trim. It cost me 95 dollars (on the phone she told me 70) not including tip. Very disappointing. -

Brenda isn't just a good colorist (and stylist) she's a super hero!
After dying my hair black for about three years I desperately wanted a change. I tried doing an at home color correction which turned out horribly. Part of my hair was a weird auburn, the rest was left blacker than ever and all of it was completely damaged.
Because of the fragile state of my hair, I knew I needed a good colorist who would be honest with me. Based on her bio and the great reviews here, I ended up choosing Brenda. I emailed her and she quickly replied that she was free to see me same day. After doing a strand test and giving me a free deep condition, we talked and she was very clear about what my hair could and couldn't do, which was exactly what I was looking for and we decided to push forward. From 3:30 to 7, she didn't leave my side! We left that evening having agreed to meet again the next morning, in order to give my hair time to show it's full reaction to the current treatment.
The next morning we met again at 9am and again, Brenda didn't leave my side until almost 7pm!! The amount of time she took with me shows that she is just so completely dedicated to satisfying her customers. She made sure that I was completely happy with the color (which took two rounds of foils, a couple color strips, maybe a hundred washes and I'm sure I'm leaving out so much more of what she did) and, above all, she did her absolute best to keep my hair healthy.
I knew getting black color out would be a long and arduous process but Brenda's honesty, ability to set proper expectations PLUS her great and upbeat attitude (she was still upbeat and awesome even after ten hours!!!) made it a fun and painless process. In 24hrs I was able to walk out with a great cut, style, healthy, shiny hair and a color that wasn't black. I literally had tears of joy in my eyes once she finished.
I'll never be able to thank Brenda enough for all the hard work and time she put in, not to mention the completely affordable price she charged. She definitely has a new and loyal follower.
and p.s. after spending so much time there, I can say with confidence that the entire salon really is great, the dryers are AMAZING, the organic products are wonderful and the other stylists were also very welcoming! Love this place! -

I have been visiting the Fancy Salon for over a year now and LOVE, love, love the results I get with my ever-changing hair colors and styles. I have had red, brunette, highlights, platinum and various lengths and colors added for pop. I have worked with Lu, Jen, Jenaya, Brenda, Sylvia and Alicia. Lu is a master with a razor cut. Jen does fantastic bobs and layered cuts. Brenda and Alicia are amazing with bright colors. Jenaya is a generous perfectionist and Sylvia gives the most amazing scalp massage. They are amazing!! I have observed some incredible results walk out of the salon, and you really can't go wrong if you have open communication and trust any one of these experienced professionals with your tresses. The Fancy Salon is a shining SE Portland gem! Shine on!

Thank you, yelp, for helping me find Fancy Salon (and Alicia!)! I don't have a car, and the location of the salon was easily accessible via public transit (I live in Southwest and the salon is in Southeast); I made it there in less than 20 minutes. And it was super-convenient to make an appointment with my stylist directly through e-mail. The salon itself is hip, yet quaint...you won't find pretentious folks here. :) I recommend you check out their web site!
I went with Alicia, as I was looking for somebody who could cut my fine hair and leave it with some texture (she can do razor cuts, too), and am SOOOO glad I did! Alicia was very likable---a skilled, down-to-earth artist with style---and very talented. She is experienced and really knows exactly what she's doing. And I also like that she didn't try to push expensive product on me!
She cut my hair while asking questions to meet MY needs and gave me the style I was looking for and couldn't find at other salons in Portland. I wound up paying almost half the price at Fancy than I did at stuffy salons downtown.
I would recommend Alicia and Fancy Salon to any of my family, friends, & co-workers.I walked out of the salon with more pep in my step---Gracias, Alicia! :) I will be seeing you in 6 weeks... -

Had a haircut with Heather, the owner. I found her to be down to earth, intelligent, and interesting. I'm always happy when the required haircut conversations go beyond celebrity gossip and mere pleasantries.
I really liked the naturally lit vibe of the salon. Tea and beverages available near the door. And a couple of hilarious books ("Bad Hair" and "Mullets") available to flip through while you're waiting.
A great haircut. She took into consideration my hair type and the fact that I don't use products or heat to do my hair. She asked about allergies and preferences in terms of product used on my hair. She also showed me how to make my naturally mixed/wavy hair look curlier. AND she didn't get snobby when I asked for a recommendation of the best drugstore-priced hair products (FYI: Garnier Fructis and JASON are both good options).
Two thumbs up. I kinda liked the industrial-ish vibe of the neighborhood and appreciated the parking lot.
OH! Almost forgot to mention they offer free bang trims in-between haircuts. You can schedule on their website, or even just text her to check on availability. -

Over the years, my problematic hair (read: curly, cowlicks, and just plain BIG) and I have left a trail of stylists in our wake. Upon moving to Portland, I knew I needed to start the dreaded task of finding a stylist to help tame the beast that is my hair. It was starting to look like I was wearing a protective hair helmet or that I might need to buy an extra airline seat for my hair should I need to fly in the near future. I needed help and fast!
So, I turned to trusty Yelp and discovered Fancy Salon which not only had great reviews, but is also conveniently located in my neighborhood. I called up (appointments can be made online) and asked if there was a stylist available who is familiar with curly hair. I was able to get a same-day appointment with Sylvia. Sweet!
Upon arriving, I was greeted warmly and was able to relax while I waited for a few minutes. The vibe is very laid back which I appreciated. There was a very sweet dog perched on the couch with me. Dog+good music+friendly people=great experience!
Sylvia was absolutely wonderful! She took time to talk with me about what I wanted and then explained what she was going to do. She used really great products by Kevin Murphy on my hair (I returned the next day to buy them). They smelled great and made my hair look really good. Sylvia took her time cutting my hair and at the end, she had me run my fingers through it and show her how I liked to style it. This was a very welcome change from my usual experience of going to get my hair cut and styled by someone who has no idea what to do with curly hair and walking out looking like something has gone horribly wrong from the neck up. Sylvia was very friendly and not overly talky which I appreciated. She gave me some great suggestions for places where I might procur yummy food and locally brewed beer.
For the first time, I'm really looking forward to returning for a haircut and I will definitely be heading back to Fancy Salon. -

I cannot say enough good things about Fancy Salon and Sylvia in particular!
I live in Chicago now, but I grew up in Silverton and because a good haircut in Chicago can easily run you into the triple digits, I decided to wait until Christmas and get a cut when I was home visiting the fam. Naturally, I turned to Yelp for help and decided to book a cut with Sylvia, per all of her excellent reviews. I booked online, which was a nice and convenient option.
Not only was Sylvia laid back and easy to talk to, but she knows hair and gave me the best cut I have had in YEARS. I am always anxious to get my hair cut as I have been scarred by a number of baaaaad do's. Now my only anxiety is trying to figure out how to go another four months without a cut, until I can get back to Portland to see Sylvia again! Eeep.
I don't know how $40 for a haircut compares to other salons in Portland, but I was glad to pay it. The experience and the cut were worth every penny and then some. -

Jen P. has been my stylist for nearly 7 years. I followed her from her first salon, to a second, to a third, and now to Fancy! because she has always made my hair look fresh, innovative, and extremely flattering. I even asked her for business cards so I could hand them out to the random women who have consistently complimented me on the cut and color.
After getting to know Jen and discovering her background as a fine art painter, I understand why she has such a mastery over haircoloring--she has worked with pigments for over 20 years!
Jen has always encouraged me to go into bold territory with my hair, and she has been right on the money! Right now, we're growing out my short cut into something longer and asymmetrical, with a vastly different color. The compliments from strangers just keep coming! I'm grateful to have a stylist that I can trust to always make me look amazing.
Thank you, Jen! -

After living in Portland for nearly 10 years, I was sick and tired of paying top dollar for sub-par hair cuts and styles. I was fortunate enough to stumble onto Fancy just over a year ago and meet one of the most awesome stylists I have had, Heather. She has perfected the art of manipulating hair so that it does precisely what it should. For the last twelve months I have enjoyed my hair style (and the fair price I pay for it) in a way that had alluded me since becoming a Portlander. If you have short hair, especially if you are after a multi-length cut that is difficult to do well, I strongly suggest stopping into Fancy!

I bought a groupon for this place and finally got around to testing it out today. I booked online for a deep condition and cut from Brenda. (It includes skin services as well but Ali has moved to a different salon so I get to split up my pampering day :-) )
The salon is super cute--didn't look like the typical salons I've been to. For example, you sit in front of a full length mirror as you get your hair cut and there's no counter to get in your way. One of those things that you didn't realize is super awesome until you experience it.
Brenda was great! She took her time to ask me about my hair and what I wanted and really listened. I told her about some of my hair issues (dry scalp) and she gave me a few different suggestions on how to combat it.
Their dryers deserve a star on their own: they're awesome! You sit on a comfy couch and it kind of rotates around your head and gives off heat. Best thing: NO NOISE! Loved it.
Overall, walked out with a great cut. It took us about 2 hours but didn't seem that long because Brenda's chatty and fun! Would definitely recommend! -

Emie is downright fabulous. I have been living in Portland nearly four years now, and let me tell you I have tried almost every salon in Portland. I came across Fancy through a friend and I was lucky enough to find Emie. I have long deep brown hair and it is often difficult to pull the right color when highlighting....up until I met Emie. She listens to what I am looking for and better yet, does it! If you need a great stylist ladies come to fancy!

I've been seeing Lu for my cuts & color for a year now, and she's still rocking it! I recently decided to add some highlights, but wanted them to be subtle. She nailed the color perfectly.

Amazing Stylist, with an amazing eye for cutting edge style!
I came in to Fancy salon to get a cut and color from Alicia, I wanted to take my platinum hair to a toned down "not brassy" golden blonde.....a very hard task! She embraced my vision with open arms, not only did she take my hair color exactly where I wanted to go she also gave me one of the best cuts of my life!
She gave my fine/thin hair volume and a face flattering,a-line bob.
Alicia is great!
I also received an incredible european facial from Ali, I was relaxed and pampered (like a facial should be!) Ali was sooooooo nice and made me feel comfortable and relaxed, she also took the time to write out a list of some possible cause to my skin care worries (so sweet)
This salon is clean, cute and has off-street parking!
They also have a great enviro/animal friendly hair care line.
Fancy, you're just damn Fancy! -

Jen colored my hair with her own agenda. Instead of the blonde I've always been (thanks to the haircolor industry), I came out a brunette. I would never pay $125+ to approximate my natural haircolor. In all honesty, I probably didn't have a very clear idea of where Jen was leading me when she introduced her idea of making my grow-out less noticeable (I never stated that this was my objective). It was also telling that when she was done, she declared she hated tell-tale roots. So mission accomplished -- her mission, not mine. I soon after conveyed my disappointment with the results, but she never contacted me -- that is until she saw my negative review at another site.
Within 48 hours of my posting that review (and 4 months after emailing her), Jen got in touch. She wasn't apologizing or offering a remedy -- no, she was confrontational and basically called me liar, saying she had never received any communication from me. Worst of all, she called me at work, where I don't have the privacy or time to address the load of attitude she was giving me. After I forwarded her the email sent months prior, she then emailed me saying there's a problem with her getting emails at work, and I should have called her -- maybe I should have sent a carrier pigeon as well to be on the safe side? Just be on notice, this woman is unprofessional at best.Comment from Heather W. of Fancy Salon 2/25/2011

Okay, I'm going to call it.
Fancy Salon is the new Dirty Little Secret.
Too soon? There's been a hole in Portland hair salons since DIrty Little Secret passed away. A "Where can I go to get a razor cut for $40 or so where they'll play Dear Catastrophe Waitress on the stereo? WHERE" shaped hole. The Fancy Salon is totally it. All the women who work there are lovely and have their own personal aesthetic. I clicked with Lu right away. She gave me the perfect warm black hair and did a free bang trim. She did it with a razor. When I saw how well she wielded the razor and dry cut the bangs around my cowlick, I have now scheduled a haircut with her last week. I love razor cuts done well. They work so well with naturally textured hair like mine. Lu uses a new razor for each new client. She is SO talented and genuine. And she's the one who put on Belle and Sebastian.
Have already had a friend go there on my glowing recommendation and she loved Brenda for curly hair. The web scheduling rocks! They carry Kusco Murphy, my favorite product line, that I've been ordering on line since DLS closed.
I'm so happy to have a zombie Dirty Little Secret. We need a moderately priced, never-boring salon like this one in the close in eastside. ALWAYS. -

I've had my hair cut by the great Jenaya W. before and I must say she's got to be one of the best hairstylists I've ever been to. If I lived up in Portland I'd be a regular of her's, but unfortunetly I rarely make it up there anymore. If you're looking for a great haircut by an awesome punk rock girl, hit up Jenaya W. you won't be disappointed!

I'm one of those girls that doesn't know how or what to do with her hair, but I want something cute and funky. The first time I went into Fancy Salon I sat in the chair and told Jenaya to just "do whatever". I said, "Give me some layers and some 'dates'!" Jenaya went to town and did, in fact, get me some dates. Having a keen unique style herself, she's got an eye to match the perfect shape/color hairstyle to someone's specific features. Needless to say, I've come back to see her and every time I leave the salon feelin' pretty fancy. Thanks Jenaya.
