Announced 6 days agoThis is the best mattress store I've ever been in or bought from. I dreaded the experience of buying a new mattress after the heavy-sell experience I've received in the past - just as bad as trying to buy a car, with the slick sales guy and the over-inflated prices that you need to bargain down. Our experience here was the opposite.
Rick was great, a professional businessman who understands the importance of treating the customer well. He really listened to what we wanted and showed us options that matched our needs. He let us alone to try out the different mattresses and let us know to come to him when we were ready. No steering us towards the more expensive mattress like at most places, no hovering over us to pressure us into a decision. He let us know which mattresses currently had discounted closeout prices from the manufacturer so we'd know upfront - no price games, just a great extra deal we didn't have to ask for.
And the prices were great - way lower than most mattress stores and with the discount it was unbelievable. They also let you bring back the mattress if you try into out and realize it isn't right for you. Even delivery guys were nice, professional and fast.
Great prices, great selection, friendly service, and a quality guarantee - what more could you hope for?
This is the best place for mattresses in the Bay Area. Rick and George are very helpful and don't push you into buying. They let you make your own decisions.
We chose a Tempur-pedic mattress. It was delivered within 5 days (faster than expected) and properly installed. They even took our old mattress away. We're now very happy and comfortable on the new mattress.
We highly recommend Rick and George, and their Famous Mattress Superstores!
I wasn't sure what to think about FMS when I first got there. It was fifteen minutes after their opening hours and the front door was still locked! The showroom was dark and no one was around - I was literally composing the 1-star Yelp review in my head as I stood there staring at the door. Luckily, Marion came in to open up just as I was about to turn around and go back to my car.
Okay - here's the skinny:
It's a small operation. Rick, George and Marion are partners and do double duty as salesmen and delivery. Marion told me that they always go on the deliveries to make sure that everything is installed properly and that the customer's happy before the truck leaves. Wow - post-sales customer service? What a concept! The downside to this extra attention is that it sometimes over-extends the staff, hence the late opening.
Marion spent a lot of time explaining all the different mattresses to me so that I could understand exactly what was going on. He clued me into the most common error that mattress buyers make and why (I don't want to steal his thunder so ask him when you go in!).
But the best part of the sale was the fact that Marion didn't rush me into making an immediate choice. In fact, after I had tested all the mattresses (no, not in that way you pervert!) he actually made me go back and try it again. See, I was laying down on a mattress for 30 seconds, thinking about it and moving on. Marion insisted that I give the mattress more time to adjust to my body so that I could get the full experience. He was right - when the memory foam kicked in, the bed felt completely different!
Are they the cheapest? I don't really know. Mattress manufacturers send the same mattress to different retailers under different brand names so it's hard to determine whether you're comparing apple to apples. However, due to the pre- and post-sales customer service that these guys provide, I'm happy with what I paid and will be sending people their way for years to come!
PS: Marion knows about Yelp so don't be surprised if he asks (a lot) for a review! :)
I have been shopping around for a mattress online and thought that I had it narrowed down. While I was on my way to Mattress Discounters and Mancini's Sleepworld off Stevens Creek I drove by the Famous Mattress store.
I expected that it would be a mom and pop style of store, with really cheap prices to compete with the big guys, and I was half right! They are definitely small, with very limited brands available (I wonder why they are not allowed to carry more brands like the big stores) and a very basic showroom. The prices were pretty good, but not as good as I had expected. I don't know why they would think that I would buy from a place that I have never heard of, when I can walk literally down the street and get it for a minimum of 5%(mattress discounters) or 10%(mancini's sleepworld) cheaper, and usually more if you go on a big sale weekend. The sales staff was nice, but they would only answer the questions that I would ask them, they never just volunteered information. I thought that a salesman was supposed to sell me something, not just tell me stuff that I have already read online.
Anyways, it was an OK shop, but it makes no sense to me to pay more or the equal amount from a small shop that could be closed by the end of this recession, than from a large shop like the others.
I ended up buying my mattress from Scott at Mancini's Sleepworld, he was incredibly informative, and answered all the questions that I could have dreamed of asking. I got a similar bed to the one that I looked at Famous and Mattress Discounter for $500 less. I would gladly spend another $2000 with Mancini's, they have always been around and are very easy to rely on.

What can I say that virtually everyone else hasn't already said? This store is fantastic, and the customer service is remarkable.
I just went shopping for a natural latex mattress. I was going to get it at that place In San Francisco a lot of Yelpers have talked about. But they're not open weekends (an unusual retail strategy). Anyway... am glad it didn't work out. I found Famous Mattress on Yelp, and stopped by at lunch because it's close to my office.
As the world's biggest skeptic, but I have to say was completely won over by this place. Rick knows everything about mattresses, and he's not one for pushing his most expensive products on you. When I found the mattress I wanted (omigod, what a great night's sleep!!) I gave Rick a lot of push-back on price. He made it work for me. He also made the delivery work on my challenging schedule. AND when it turned out I needed a different box spring, he made that happen immediately.
Love this store. Yes, you can definitely get cheaper mattresses many places. NOT WORTH IT! I've shopped (and bought) at chainstores that are staffed by commission-hungry short-timers. Rick has been in the industry forever and has a lot of info about pro's and con's of various products and types of materials. You are going to be using that mattress for many years--the quality of your well-being rests on its quality. Why low-ball? You are going to get a great financial deal here--and a great mattress to boot.
For the best price on only mattresses that are good for your back and bod, check out Famous Mattress. I also urge you to try natural latex--crazy comfortable, no chemicals like those that are added to most other mattresses, and the one I just got has a 30-year warranty.
We visited a few other matress retailers, but by far the best customer service was at Famous Mattress. I agree with a lot of the other positive reviews here--there was no pressure selling whatsoever, but Rick did give us HELPFUL advice. He won't just point you to their most expensive mattresses. Insteady he'll show explain why some mattresses are a better value for the dollar than others--and usually I agreed with Rick's opinions after trying them out in the store. They also work with you to come up with a fair price. Their delivery folks were also really top notch--they even took off their shoes once they moved all the pieces inside our home.
One hears a lot of tempting commercials on the radio about different mattress stores, so we shopped around a bit before buying. These guys are honest folks, they didn't pressure us, and they gave us not only good advice, but also a good deal.
As an additional note, the delivery was not only free, but the guys that showed up were very polite, timely, and did a good job keeping everything clean.
We don't plan on needing another mattress for a long time, but when we do, we'll shop here again.
Rick and George at Famous Mattress are amazing. I came in at 3 pm on a Sunday needing a bed that night. Not only did they find me a fabulous bed at the best price (hundreds of dollars cheaper than sleep train at town center where i went first...I'm not kidding), they delivered it that night (literally 2 hours after i bought it). They are amazing. i highly recommend them; they really take care of their customers.

I dealt with Rick initially and Marion in the end on this sale. It's the single best sales experience I had last year.
At heart, I am a bargain shopper. When possible, I don't pay full price for anything, and I'm prepared to walk out on nearly any deal that doesn't meet my exacting specifications. Because of this, I often have to deal with unscrupulous individuals at establishments with poor customer service just to save a few dollars. For me, the hassle is worth the trouble if I get the item I want at a price I consider fair (or less) -- under satisfactory conditions.
It is a rare treat indeed when the best price is also matched by the best customer service, but that was my experience with Famous Mattress.
I visited the store three times before committing to a mattress there. Rick was kind and never tried to strong-arm me into a mattress that didn't work for me. He also helped explain the differences between the satisfaction guarantee at Famous Mattress versus its competitors, foremost among which was the ability to return a mattress through the store that didn't fit the warranty return conditions (mattress stains, sunken areas being too shallow, etc.). I was convinced that if I was unsatisfied with my mattress after the 4-week break-in period that I would have no trouble returning it for another within the first 90 days. Most importantly, however, the initial price I was quoted was fair. It was like going to a car dealership and having the salesman offering the car to you at dealer price before you start negotiating.
I contrast this experience with the one I had at Mancini's Sleepworld around the corner, where I felt like I was being swindled despite the lack of money changing hands. I was being sold a mattress like a car, and the salesman was pushy and invasive. "How can I earn your business?" he kept asking. How about giving me some breathing room? I also visited the store one day when my salesperson wasn't there, and the floor manager (who recognized me) came off as intolerably pushy and smug. And as I said before, I was prepared to deal with this if the best price was here (which it certainly was not from the sale price, something I'd need to haggle down over 40% to be a viable option).
That leaves me with two final points worth mentioning.
1. I felt like I had gotten the deal of the century when I purchased my mattress (and this is even after I saw the price of the same mattress online). Whether the deal was actually as good as I -- a bargain shopper -- thought it was, feeling that it was makes it so.
2. When Marion delivered my new bed (within the delivery window, something upon which they pride themselves), he asked to wash his hands before touching the bare mattress to make any final adjustments. He washed them thoroughly, removing a fairly large amount of grime in the process. Only once his hands were perfectly clean would he touch my new mattress.
It would be difficult to overstate my satisfaction with Famous Mattress. I can't imagine shopping for my next mattress at a different store.
This place deserves your business.

**UPDATE**
I felt very comfortable making the purchase of my mattress through Famous Mattresses because of their attentive customer service, and their extensive knowledge about their products and how it compared to other brands. It's tough for them because their customers hear about all the big brands and it's hard to not consider those brands when people are in the market for a new mattress. Rick and Marion have plenty of experience to help you, and they won't sway you because they're trying to complete another sale, they are convinced that their mattresses will make you happy, and then they let you decide which one to go for. From sale to delivery, I can't say I could have asked for a better mattress experience. They have a comfort guarantee, free 12-months financing and free delivery and removal of your old mattress. You can't go wrong with them.
Below is my review of Famous Mattresses when I first visited in 10/2007.
Okay, so, I haven't BOUGHT from this place yet, but I have been mattress shopping for the first time, and this was my first stop. Marion was super duper helpful, and gave me a lot of good information about selecting a mattress. He also stepped away to allow me time to lay on the mattresses and compare between them. Prices were decent compared to all the other stores, and they provided the same services that larger chain stores also promised, delivery, financing, etc. They exclusively carry Serta and Tempur-pedic mattresses. I'm just comparing mattresses now, otherwise, I would with no question purchase from Marion!

Let me start by saying this: I hate shopping for big ticket items. I hate big ticket salesmen even more, and if I even get a slight sense that I'm being duped I'll walk out the door, regardless of where we are in the purchase. That didn't happen at Famous Mattress.
We dealt with Rick. Rick spent a lot of time with us, explaining the different mattresses and payment options. He was clear, his story never changed, and he gave us our space and time when we needed it. The guy knows how to treat his customers, especially skiddish ones like me.
I cannot say the same about their competitors on Stevens Creek. Not only were they all overpriced, but they had pushy salespeople who were not at all interested in getting us on the best mattress for us. They all, and I mean all (we shopped extensively prior to visiting FM), seemed to be pushing us into a purchase that was good for them (quota time?) I ticked my wife off a couple of times by walking out midway through a potential "deal."
Alas, we went to Rick and bought a wonderful Tempur-pedic mattress. It was in stock and delivered right on time the very next day. The delivery guys were very respectful of our home, and were very friendly. By the way, if you're shopping for a mattress, seriously consider springing for the Tempur-pedic... the difference is remarkable.
Give these guys your business... they'll take care of you.
These guys are great. I bought a mattress set from them last November and after sleeping on it for a couple of months I found it to be too hard. I dreaded going back in there to bring it up, because I figured it would be a giant hassle and that they probably wouldn't do anything. I couldn't have been more wrong!
They were so nice about it and seemed truly concerned that my back was hurting from the new mattress. They reminded me that they had explained that the #1 reason for issues was that people tend to confuse firmness with surface comfort. As they said, "...no one calls us a month later complaining that the bed is too comfortable...", so they like to show firm insides with plusher tops. I should have listened!!!
Anyway, they let me pick out a new one and delivered it (with NO delivery fee!!!) 3 days later. It's been a month on the new one and I am in love.
Thanks to all the other Yelpers who led me here because they did not disappoint in any way! I am thrilled with the service I got at Famous Mattress!!!
I saw their Grand Opening ad in the Merc and thought I'd give it a shot as my old mattress was completely worn out.
I spoke with Rick and George and they helped me pick out a really nice Perfect Sleeper after about 20 minutes in the store. They did a great job educating me about what was good for my back and about how long these things last realistically. I had come in for a Tempurpedic mattress which was a lot more expensive, but they told me that based on what I was telling them that I would be better off with the Perfect Sleeper. I was especially impressed because the one I bought was $200 less than the Tempurpedic.
Anyway, no sales tax, no high pressure and genuinely nice people at Famous Mattress. They're definitely worth a shot if you need a new mattress!
Update: Mattress is awesome and my mom went in and bought one for herself. Same great service and a GREAT deal.
The most terrible shopping experience I had for years! !!!
My husband has sleeping problems. When we walked in the store, the guys like you can buy a suitable one no matter what problem you have, and what's more, their mission is "100% satisfaction guarantee". We bought one. They said they need some time to order it because they don't have stock in the store. It was terrible they never showed up when they said they will delivery. It took more than two weeks when they deliver. It did not fit my husband and we required exchange. Another nightmare. it took longer for them to deliver. The second one did not work either. I called in and talked with "Rick" to see whether I can return it and pay for the delivery fees, handling fees, and whatever fees. He refused and claimed that my husband did not sleep long enough on the mattresse. My husband was not even breathing well on the mattress. How can he sleeped on it for one month as Rich's experience. My conclusion:
Don't buy a mattress just because the sales is good at talking and their oral guarantee; Try to find a store where goods can be returned.
