A very solid 4 stars for this branch of the 4th and Bainbridge original. Given its placement next to the William Penn House, I think this little storefront's history of switching establishments every 18 months or so is finally over!
I love the classic decor so much that I wish I could copy and paste the style right onto my master bathroom.
We were seated promptly and the waitress took our drink order. I went for the totally un-kosher grilled cheese and bacon. Delish! On a scale of meh to bacon (where bacon = awesome), this was totally bacon. Had the side of potato pancakes. They were tasty, but disappointingly did not come with any sour cream or applesauce. (I probably could have asked for some, but I was having a shy day, so I did not).
Hubs got the zaftig pistrami on rye. Yikes. 22oz of MEAT! It was everything the waitress promised it would be and more. I'd hoped hubs would turn it into three meals, but since he ate half of the sandwich at the table, he'll probably finish the other half for lunch. Either way, getting multiple meals out of one dish makes the price easier to stomach. Our friend got the matzoh ball soup. They aren't kidding when they say "ball." It's about the size of a child's bowling ball... or a shrunken head. She reported it was light and fluffy and hit the spot (the soup, not the shrunken head).
Loved the cookies that came with the check so much that I made hubs get me another full-sized one from the counter.
Service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Note - the restroom is just one unisex bathroom in the back past the counter.
We'll be back!
I had to go out today in this dismal bleak miserable rain. If I did not need necessary cupcake ingredients or to do my banking I would have stayed in and starved.
I stumbled in and sat down. i was a bit annoyed because I had mixed up the kibitz room with 4th street. the kibitz room is currently offering a deal on corned beef sanwiches half a sandwich for 4.95.
I was craving some corned beef so I stayed because it's not like I was going back out in the rain! I had a diet black cherry dr, browns, corned beef sandwich easily bigger than my head. I only managed to eat a 4th of the sandwich at the restaurant. I picked at the rest while the dodgers kicked our arse today.
I like the cabbage/pickle plate and the cookie at the end. My waitress was sweet, but a little to phony. Like she went on and on how if a phillies game or eagles game is going on how the place is dead. I think she was trying to hint that the game was starting in half an hour and that she wanted a nice tip. Whatevs.
I'll be back but with Sara and Miriam so we can split one sandwich!
Thank goodness for Famous 4th Street Deli in the neighborhood - what a great addition to Rittenhouse area brunch spots!
The space is tiny and quarters are cramped. Unlike the original, the bakery items are in the back and there isn't much physical space for queuing to occur during peak dining hours.
My party of two had no trouble getting a seat in the late afternoon on Saturday. We did have some difficulty fitting all our plates onto the table - complimentary relish & pickles, a roast beef sandwich, grilled cheese and side of fresh cut fries. Proportions are enormous and the delicious, fresh rye bread was sliced over 1/2" thick. Our waitress missed our order of fries so we didn't get to enjoy them at the same time as our sandwiches, but they were totally worth the wait. Unsalted and plainly seasoned it was the thickness of the cut that made them stand out. Crispy on the outside, after 15 minutes they were still hot and steamy on the inside.
Famous 4th Street Deli sandwiches & platters are so large, unless you're splitting a dish plan to bring home a doggie bag. Because most people wrap up food to go, I'm especially disappointed that they use styrofoam packaging.
Ending on a positive note, the freshly baked, soft chocolate chip cookies served with our check were a delightful treat.
Admittedly, I have eaten here only one time and I have never been to the original, on Election Day or otherwise. The matzoh ball soup was tasty, and the turkey reuben was fine, too. But there was nothing unique about the food other than the size of the sandwich. And I just don't see the allure of a sandwich stacked with six inches of turkey meat.
how excited am i that this opened within walking distance of me?
i've heard all the buzz about the original, but now, i can stumble hungrily out of bed and be here in no time flat.
ginormous portions. comfort food at its best.
Went here on opening day for takeout. Already the place was bustling. As a nice Jewish girl who can't be bothered to make her own stuffed cabbage, this is a nice addition to the neighborhood. The portions are so big that its a little overwhelming--I took my sandwich apart and had enough meet for 4 sandwiches of normal size. The dessert case looked amazing, and I can't wait to get back and try some of the cakes.
