9 reviews for Famima!!
I came here today because I saw a sign that said they had steamed buns and I love steamed buns. The store reminds me of a Waitrose store in the UK or a Fresh and Easy but much much smaller.
I ordered 2 pork buns one that was spicy (for my SO) and the An steam bun which is non meat with bean paste IIRC. It was good. I do miss pork buns though.
I took and photo and was quickly warned that I could not do that. I still don't get why some places are soooo scared of photos...like Pinkberry....whatever.
I feel kind of bad for this Famima, it's the tiniest one I've ever seen and even though it's less than a year old, it seems pretty dirty. That's because you have to dodge the bums and general hooligans crowding around the front of it.
Once inside, I found what I needed in less than 5 minutes. Since it's a limited selection, I didn't think much of it but they had their usual sandwiches, curry bowls, drinks and snacks for sale. They will heat up the sandwiches like other locations for you.
I bought a yogurt, an order of sesame wings and a spicy tuna onigiri. The sesame wings weren't as good as the Famima's over at Paul Hastings and the nori for the spicy tuna wasn't the freshest.
Once I paid, I didn't immediately see the spoons and such. I asked the guy who was already helping someone else. I would have grabbed them myself if he indicated where they were but he stopped mid-transaction and grabbed one for me. Once I knew where they were I went over there to discover...no napkins. Damn.
I'll be saving my Famima cravings for the larger and cleaner one at Paul Hastings.
if i need coffee fast, famima is where i stop in on my way to work. it is definitely not amazing, but at least they carry different roasts. i always get the hawaiian hazelnut because i only like my coffee black and with that one the coffee doesn't taste so bad. you can also make it iced if you like. it's self serve so you can get in and out as quickly as your little hands can pour.
i wouldn't recommend anything else here though. the sandwiches are really overpriced considering this place is comparable to a 711. i don't want to pay 6 or 7 bucks for a sandwich from a convenience store. and what's up with not having any veggie dumplings except for that desserty red bean one? they do have really good mango gummy candies though, and the service is always really friendly and quick, so they get an extra star for that.
I had never been to a Famima before - even though they have been springing up around my office like weeds. Well, today I woke up at the crack of dawn and hauled my butt downtown an hour early to avoid the "He was the butt of all our jokes 3 weeks ago, but now we LOVE Michael Jackson and must crowd anything having to do with his memorial awesomeness!"
So, my friend and I were hungry, and coming out of the 7th St Metro Station, and there was Famima! Like a mirage in the "I'm going to die if I don't have food and coffee" desert....
It's brilliant!! I love how all the fresh deli foods (sushi, sandwiches, salads, etc..) have the nutrition info printed on them. Extra stars from those of us watching the calories. They also offer a hot foods case with a much wider selection than, say, a 7-11. I was very impressed that they have an entire separate hot case with varieties of bao! I LOVE bao! They also have a case of Krispy Kreme donuts - dangerous since I haven't had a Krispy Kreme since they closed the only location in the western San Fern. Valley.
I managed to keep my eyes in my head, and pick up a moderately healthy whole-wheat turkey breakfast sandwich (310 cals / $3.99). They even grilled for me before I left. It was super tasty.
I love Famima!!, so when a new location opened up even closer to work, I was both excited and worried. Excited because it wouldn't take as long to get practically whatever I wanted faster, worried because I usually come out of a Famima!! having spent way more than I should have.
I was both relieved and disappointed when walking into this location for the first time.
I was relieved I wouldn't spend my usual eternity figuring out what I want to eat due to the limited selection, but if you've seen the huge bag o' everything I carry on a regular basis, I like to have the things I need at the ready, and I don't have the confidence this place will be able to accommodate.
The space itself is just a little larger than my teensy bedroom. They've got the bao, they've got their smaller wall of drinks, and the selection of sandwiches and lunch items in the cooler. They thankfully have a decent array of the instant noodle soups, but the rest of the varied Japanese and elsewhere snacks alike are sorely missed.
What I do appreciate are the constant slurry of coupons they provide for a free coffee or $1 hot dog, and the people working behind the counter are always real nice.
There's a super sacrifice for this super convenience store, which may be easily remedied by hitting one of the other five locations throughout Downtown.
As a general statement I thoroughly enjoy a trip to Famima!! They have a vast variety of asian snack (which I generally live for) and at decent prices. I guess I have been spoiled the one I used to go to all the time was on 3rd street in santa monica. That one is huge we would go for snacks all the time on break they even had the best cookies ever and dont get me started on the corn chowder. So when I saw that there was one opening next to the train exit I was super excited I could stock up snacks for work.
Wrong I was.
First they are the size of my fucking hallway, and all they had were seriously american snacks and maybe 5 asian ones of course all shrimp flavored ones. No thanks.
So this morning my new regular coffee spot was closed so I decided to give Famima a chance. My friend used to work there so I knew that they now had iced coffee. So I go in, find the iced coffee thing and am kinda impressed. They have a the typical stuff milk, half and half, and the little containers of flavored creams. Then they even have the syrups (the good brand) and you can still help yourself to that. Cool or so I thought. I put 3 hazelnut squirts and ice up my cup and then proceed to fill my cup with the alleged iced coffee. Ok first foul the coffee is warm. So I have to add a lot more ice. Second it is already super light colored. So then I have to try some and it seriously tasted like coffee flavored water. I know I cant expect much for 2 bucks but still, I was disappointed. Maybe I expect to much after being spoiled by Marie's.
I also get a pastry. And that made up for it, which earned them the second star. First star is because in general this chain is great. Some places that advertise being a better convenience store should really have all of their locations be bigger than a hallway.
It is a little cramped if it gets crowded. I've been twice now. They have Kombucha! This new location is closest to us, so I'll be able to get my kombucha fix!! I also got a spicy tuna rice ball thingy that was yummy. Everyone is very friendly, greeting you when you walk in the door. I got my FREE "slush" which turned out to be an ICEE, the original. It was fun to drink, but I was hoping for something more fruity. They have a bike rack out front so I can bike up there in a jiffy. All the cigarettes kind of trip me out, but I love Famima! Famima!
I like the Famimas on Figueroa/8th and the one on 6th St. better than this one. It's too narrow for such a busy store (it's right next to the Metro entrance, and seriously, it's about as wide as my closet), and there seemed to be more employees than customers for some reason. Also, there doesn't seem to be as much Japanese stuff in this one. I mean, it's practically a 7-11. But it's convenient and they sell lottery tickets and Japanese ice cream. They just opened so I got a bunch of free stuff. On the other hand they overcharged me and that took forever to fix. So irritating. I kept saying, "Can you just void it?" and after 3 different employees tried to fix it, they gave up and voided it. ARGH!!
So out of all the Famima!!'s in downtown I really don't like this one, it's close to the Metro station, and it seems like this one is the dirtiest. They opened up March 24, so it's relatively new, but in the 5 times I've been there, the coffee machine was broken for two days, they were out off coffee sleeves another time, the slushy machine was broken another day, and that coffee station seems like it's not kept clean as often as the others. My gripe is that it should be kept as clean and stocked as the other Famima!!'s in the area. But it's way better than the ghetto 7-11 down the street on 7th and Olive, which has a ton of homeless people outside.
