Great falafel (old school in the pocket pita!), creamy and delicious hummus. They even have those pink pickled turnips that go with the hummus - yum! Really good hot sauce.
They are often busy and serve the line with efficiency and friendliness. It is very casual and inexpensive.
I didn't care for the ful (which I only tried once there).
This is a good place to grab a quick bite to eat. After trying a few Falafel places in the Bay Area this one is most memorable.
Their Falafel's have the most flavor and their spicy red sauce really tops things off. The flavors go together wonderfully. :) Not to mention how crispy and fresh they are.
Another must try here is their Fresh Banana Shake. The orange one is ok. Don't try the strawberry one haha.
*great tasting falafels
*fantastic banana shakes
*not that much parking, but there's street parking
*definitely a wait during lunch/dinner hours
*close to VF & S-Row for some shopping!
...
I would give it 5 stars but the other day when my BF to pick up a togo order around 5PM, the guy only gave him two hot sauces. For an order of 4. When the BF asked for a couple more the guy said they ran out. Ran out of your famous sauce right before prime dinner time? Ok!
Let me start off by saying I'm lazy. I only like getting food within the radius of my house or my girls house. I'm so happy to have this so close to the house! I feel healthy eating this stuff! Can't go wrong with a gyro or falafel large and a banana shake. The onion rings are decent, just don't forget to get extra sauces.

I want fala-fel
I want fala-fel
I want fala-fel
I'll go get some today!
I was singing this in my head as I made the risky journey (by foot) from Valley Fair to Falafel's Drive In. It had been at least a year since I had gone and I was well overdue for a visit. You know how there's "Peanut Butter Jelly Time"? Well it was banana shake and falafel time for me! Seriously, whoever came up with the combo is a gem. Two of life's happy indulgences paired together at last. I'm telling you, it'll be the rage in the next decade--come here and say you were first!
The prices here are definitely a money saver. First off yeah, cheers to including tax on the menu! It makes routing for change super easy (or unnecessary). Secondly, you guys have some of the fastest moving lines in the West (or at least the South Bay). Even at the peak of lunch hour I've never had to wait more than around ten minutes. Off peak hours? I'm lucky if I get my change back in my wallet properly before my food is done(and not haphazardly like I was at a bar, trying to jam my cash back into my wallet, purse or whatever will hold it). The only drawback to the speed is that if you don't know exactly what they put in your choice of food they will look annoyed as they explain (chances are repeatedly) what its contents are. In other words, be adventurous or bring an experienced friend.
Ok, while I've had better, I am beyond satisfied with their offerings. Obviously the falafel's the draw but the tabbouleh and hummus are also more than passable. The presence of fries, onion rings and burgers on the menu are a little off but I guess that's to shut up the whiny guy in the group who votes against this place for lunch because he wanted to go to Burger King. The baba ghnoush (I KNOW I spelled it wrong) is quite tasty as well. Baba ghnoush. One of my favorite set of words to utter. Honestly, I love eating this stuff AND I love the show MXC on Spike and any single time they name a contestant Baba Ghnoush I cheer for them. Seriously, if you've ever seen that Seinfeld episode where he makes the comment that salsa is a fun word to say well, then let me tell you that Baba Ghnoush is MORE fun to say!
Plus (and I know I WILL be getting flack for this one) I think MXC is funnier than Seinfeld. Baba Ghnoush triumphs over Chi Chi Rodriguez!

The falafel drive-in is an outdoor restaurant. Im not a big fan of outdoor eat outs but The food is good but no Shawermas. Great for a quick lunch break. The service is good and super fast. If its your first time, ask for a sample and the owner will give you some free falafel!
the only thing is that its kind of expensive.
We really enjoyed this place. It's completely casual, simple and just plain good food. No frills. Banana shake was awesome and we loved ALL the food, gyro, falafel, chicken, hummus, pita chips.....
It amazes me sometimes how many people watch the Food Network. I mean, I watch the Food Network religiously and have done so for years but I guess it's garnered something of a true foodie fan following.
Imagine, for example, how wierded out and bemused I was when I was at Falafel's Drive In last week, picking up the usual gyro salads for my mom and myself, and I see some out-of-towners taking pictures in front of the Falafel's Drive In sign like it was Mann's Chinese Theater! And they were talking about what they were supposed to order in regards to what Guy had eaten on the Food Network episode!
So crazy ol' lil' Falafel Drive-In, the hole in the wall place I've been coming to since I could eat solid food pretty much, is now a little San Jose celebrity food spot. How crazy! BUT they definitely deserve it.

I've heard about this place for a long long time, and finally my friends dragged me here on a random Tuesday afternoon and boy am I glad they did! Even though I've driven up and down Steven's Creek a billion times, I've never seen the flashing Falafel's Drive In sign! Now I'll definitely never miss it.
Falafel's Drive In is a small outdoor/limited indoor seating fast food restaurant that has fast and friendly service. I had a large Gyro, Falafels, Tabbouleh, hummus, pita bread, and a strawberry milkshake. The Gyro was good, except I was hoping it would be meat cut off a spit, instead it was lamb meatballs, but still tasty. I liked that it was stuffed with lettuce and tomatoes as well. The Falafels were yummy, especially dipping into the hummus or the sesame sauce. The Tabbouleh was interested, not something I'd eat every time, but I enjoyed the fresh ingredients. The hummus was pretty standard, but I liked that we had our own pita bread bag. And the strawberry milkshake was delicious.
I really enjoyed that the service was fast and friendly, the food was tasty and fresh, and it was all very cheap! It's also fun to sit outdoors in an unusual location and get some of the local flavor. This place is very popular, with a constant flow of customers eating in or to go.
Now that I finally know where this place is, I can't wait to go again!

This place is alright. I've only gotten the large falafel w/ banana shake deal for $7. I can never finish the whole falafel. I guess I get kinda tired of it? I wish the sauce would be more distributed in the falafel instead of just mostly being on the top. They will give you extra hot sauce if you ask. The banana shake is to die for - keeps me coming back here.
Parking can be awkward if it's busy, especially the slots in front. Just park in the back... although I think some spaces back there are reserved for other stores.
This place is awesome. You can eat outdoors and watch the traffic going to Valley Fair/ Santana Row, breathe in the fumes, and get your grub on. I prefer TOGO. There is also a small dining area inside, but I am yet to find that magical door that leads into that area. I was with my bestfriend once, and couldn't figure it out! LOL
I only mark off one star because sometimes (very rarely though) the guy is a dick, his tone of voice is very degrating, and he's yelling at everyone., but it's understandable when he's the only one working the line. I guess it can get overwhelming.
I was once there when some couple got into a fight because she got cucumbers in the falafel sandwhich. "I'm allergic! I'm allergic!,"the husband kept screaming and she had the best attitude like, "oh f-it, go exchange it then." It was amusing to watch.
There is a wide range of people like the ditzy kids from SCU who are so overwhelmed with picking something because they've never had anything ethnic before, the punk kids w/ their awesome hair-dos and tats, and the vegetarian Indian business professionals with their accents that make everything from getting a simple meal sound like a la-de-dah fancy dinner par-tay.
Anyhow, the food is great! Cheap and it is filling. I was afraid to go before because I was afraid it wasn't going to be filling, but it is! I totally recommend the falafel sandwhich and if you're a saucy person like me, get lots and lots (white & red) and pour it on!
mmm....drooling...
Fun! Went here with some friends and thoroughly enjoyed my falafel. Probably the best one I've ever had (I haven't had many, I'll be honest) Dining outside was a great way to enjoy the weather. Plus, it's right near Valley Fair for after-lunch shopping! Oh, and we saw the guys in the back jumping on the trash in the dumpster to compress it for about 10 minutes. It must mean they're a green company! Go Falafel's Drive In!

Did this place change owners recently? Did they lose the recipes? After hearing so much about this place I thought I was finally going to be able to get a decent gyros in San Jose. I was wrong!
The meat inside my gyros was like my grandma's leftover meatloaf, I loved grandma but I hated her cooking. She was a nice sweet old lady that loved to see me, we used to have a great time playing board games. I would listen to her stories and when it came time to eat I would do my best to find a way of getting her to go out for food. She couldn't cook.
The meat was not hot, it looked as though it had been under a heat lamp for hours. It was devoid of any spices or flavor. The rest of the gyros was uninspired. The hot sauce they gave me to put on it looked like a mix of canned cocktail sauce and chili sauce, it was bland and devoid of anything but red color.
I saw all sorts of other plates at that place that looked good. I had a bite of the falafel and I was impressed with it. However I didn't get a good meal, and the price was more than I should have paid for it. The experience was lack luster.
If customers aren't supposed to order the gyros why isn't there some sort of warning on the menu? I felt like I ordered the one thing on the menu that was BAD.
I might give this place a shot if someone takes me along, but from what I experienced the first time this place doesn't have much of a draw. I am glad everyone else seems to like it.
**update**
I went back with my girlfriend and I got the falafel and shake combo and it was OK. I was still not impressed, I think I am just spoiled by the old falafel spot I used to go to in Berkeley. This place is a nice is not what I would consider a destination. Nice folks run the place though, glad they are doing well with their business.
Yes, the falafels, mixings and sides are great. You may want to avoid going here during a major heat wave though. My maiden trek was during a heat wave last summer and the banana milk shake that I heard so much about was given to me by the attendant melted to a runny/soupy consistency (they did apologize for it and blamed it on the heat). On this day the garbage from others feasts whiffed in the air as it mixed with the smell of fast fried food. The tables had traces of food from the previous consumers. But hey, it's good messy eats and the flavor of the food out weighs any fore-mentioned drawbacks.
Easy as Sunday morning....I wish...Should be at church, instead slightly hungover, wet towels strewn about, broken glass from her spilled cocktail, why is the jacuzzi water so cloudy?
I could spend the next hour laundering, sweeping, and cleaning OR I could throw on some flip flops and oversized Jackie O's and cruise down to Falafel Drive-In.
Hmmm...After about .5 seconds I choose falafel balls!
Gorgeous, amazing day! The kind of perfect weather that reminds you why you live in California and can never leave. I realized it was so beautiful I must sit outside to enjoy a picnic with my falafel and I needed Grandma Romandia to do it with me! Never falafel alone if you can falafel with someone you love.
Grandma's first time so I offered to order and let her grab the table. Looks like I'm not the only one that skipped on bible study, the place was jam packed with a familiar morning after crowd.
Once I saw the look on Grandma's face, after seeing the amount of food I had ordered, it was obvious that I was the only one with a hangover. If you know my Grandma it wouldn't be at all shocking if she was worse off than me, but not today. Not today when I expected her to consume 2 waters, 2 banana shakes, 2 large falafels lathered with hot chili sauce, falafel balls, a corn dog, hummus, and our very own bag of pita bread. Oh my, Deelish! No going to waste I ate hers too.
Two hours of delightful girlie conversation later about life and boys and how Falafel Drive- In and Just Leather takes me back to a bitter sweet time of my youth, I had satisfied and hydrated my tummy and said goodbye-farewell to my hangover.
Falafel Drive-In never leave me.

If you know another falafel drive in, then I don't know what parts of town you're driving in. For me this is the only place I know that caters to the market of fast-paced commuters with a craving for falafel...
Yet this place really isn't a "drive in". You pretty much have to park on the street or way back in a parking lot. Then you'll have to walk up to the window, a la Dairy Queen. So it should actually be called Falafel's Walk-Up or Falafel Queen.
The seating is outdoors with bench tables like those found at parks. Look out for the lines during lunch time because they can get hectic. I'm not totally sure why there's such a popularity.
The falafel is pretty good here. I never get full on one falafel alone. I usually go for their meal deals, such as the falafel and banana milkshake (around $5). I ordered a salad here once and it was horrible. It was basically blocks of iceberg lettuce with some slices of cucumbers and tomatoes dashed with pepper. I was really confused. I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing, or a stinginess thing, or a "I don't know how to make a salad" thing, or whatevers.
If you're looking for a light snack or you're just tired of eating at the WIDE VARIETY OF OTHER FALAFEL PLACES, come here.
-Really, I have no clue where else I'd get falafel. Anyone know of some place that serves falafel?

I don't understand what all the hype was about.
Falafel was ok. Not filling. Pita bread they used was not good. Thin and rips easily. Fries were bland, onions rings were ok, corn dog (Although not the special) could have been fried longer. It tasted like it was microwaved. What I was kind pissed off about was that I ordered a large soda for $2.25 and when I got my food, the soda cup was the size of a 16oz, full of ice. What a rip off. I'd bring my own drink if there was a next time. Seemed like no one cared about the food quality about anything really. For the money I paid, you really don't see a good return.

They have a really good selection on the menu but the Falafel is what you should order (obvs). They have great outside seating for when the weather's nice in the summer (which it thankfully is in SJ, unlike SF).
In days of yore when I was still in my training, my mantra was to get the most amount of good grub for the least amount of moulah. Given that, one of my fave spots on the bang-for-the-buck repertoire was Falafel Drive-In.
Located just a block away from Valley Fair shopping center, Falafel Drive-In basically is a big tin shack surrounded by some elementary school picnic tables. But don't let the surroundings scare you away from trying this gem of a place. The Falafel pitas here serve up the absolute best falafel I have ever had. Pair that with a banana shake and that's how I roll.
Falafel Drive-In...Just remember that you're not there for the ambiance...so just grab your grub and get the hell outta Dodge.

mmmm... Falafel's.... there's just something about those Falafel's.. they are just so .. yummy! At first when I would come here I'd get a small gyro and falafel's on the side... now I skip the gyro and get a falafel wrap and banana milkshake.. yum-oh! this spot is money if you have a craving and not much money ^_^
If you're a food network fanatic like me you already know that Guy Fieri gave the drive-in it's props on his show - Diners, Drive-ins and Dives ^_^ YAY!!
Why do you think the line is so long and the place is ALWAYS packed?
Absolutely THE BEST falafel's in the known universe.
The guys at the window are fast and efficient - order here, pickup there.
Take lots of extra napkins. Yes, they are messy, that's part of the EXPERIENCE. It's against all the laws of nature to eat a falafel neatly, it just can't be done.
Share a picnic table with someone you don't know and have fun.

I used to work right next to this place, and used to eat here all the time.
The owners are nice and always hooked it up fat!
Before eating here, I used to ask myself what the fcuk is a falafel? Till I ordered one and got it with read sauce...then I thought to myself...where the fcuk have you been all my life!
The red sauce that they give you is so good! I usually got the bean one in the morning and the kabob one at night. Good source of protein and loaded with good veggies!
The burgers and fries aren't so bad either!

I don't like falafels.
It's true...my husband winces whenever I say that because he loves falafels AND this place all rolled into one big happy la-la bubble...but I can't help it. The idea of deep fried little green whatever it is...just is not up my alley. Even when you douse them in the red sauce...it doesn't hide the fact that they are little green fried balls.
But if I did like falafels I could see how people would like Falafel's Drive In. I mean that's what they do right? For how many years?
However, I CAN vouch for their yummy corndog, even though it's probably frozen then thrown into the oil with the falafels. Maybe that's what gives it the 'special' flavor?
And their lemonde is quite tasty, esp during the hot summer months. French fries are decent enough to scarf. But give me a corndog and a lemonade and it's all good, and my better half is happy because he gets to eat a falafel gyro thing. Heaven.
I think it's hilarious they offer up American stuff like corndogs and milkshakes and all that...but then they do all the classic Mediterranean goodies like hummmus (tasty), falafels.
But yeah not a fan of the falafel. Thanks FH for recognizing that not everyone may be a fan of fried green balls...and offering up other options for us mediterraneanly challenged foodies.

I drive by this place all the time while heading over to Valley Fair and each time I drive by there is always a line. I dropped in one time to see what the hype was all about. To my surprise it was actually very delicious.
Service was fast, friendly and of course the food was great!
My order was a SM Gyro and strawberry shake. They take Cash or ATM (with a .90 cent surcharge) with the option to get cash back up to $40.
I will definitely stop by here again. There is also free wireless access (I am writing this review sitting at the tables).
I LOVE this place, the food is really good, and the service is good. I love the falafels and the hummus. This place definitely makes a great falafel, probably better than anywhere else. Its one of the rare places that I am willing to drive out of my way for.
busy place - good sign that it MUST be well-loved. Decent selection of items I couldn't pronounce. Loved the falafel sandwich and Kouby. Wished the hot red sauce on top would've been more evenly-distributed throughout the sandwich. Not too greasy for mostly fried foods. Would definitely go back!
Kathleen heard the banana shakes were good.
As much as I love their falafels and kefta kababs. I always look forward to their shakes. The banana and strawberry are my favorite and great way to cool down the spiciness from the hot sauce. Decent sized portions of falafel stuffed in a pita. When i make trip from the peninsula to do some shopping at Santana Row or Valley Fair I make sure to swoop by pick up up some Middle Eastern Eats.
Make sure you hold the hot sauce if you don't like it spicy. You really can't beat the lunch rush at this joint cause there's always a constant line but it moves quickly.

All the reviews hit the spot on this place. The falafels are excellent - make sure you ask for extra tahini and hot sauce! I thought the gyro was just ok. Banana shake is also pretty good and worth trying. Try the fried pita chips - they're a bit oily but hella good! Be prepared to leave completely stuffed, so make sure you wear your loose pants! ...and don't even think about going to VF to shop for some super cute designer jeans afterwards - you'll need to buy 1 size up!
It's best to go when they're not too busy - you'll be able get your food super quick and enjoy it on one of their picnic benches.
I ordered $25 worth of falafel balls for my bday party last yr - my whole family loved it! They also threw in a few slices of pita bread!
Love this place! =)

The small falafel sandwich is massive. I couldn't finish it. It's also pretty messy with the yogurt sauce and hot sauce just slathered on top of all the lettuce and tomatoes crammed in there. The actual falafel balls were pretty tasty. I liked that they were so crispy, nice texture. But that comes from the fact that they are deep fried, detracting from the idea that something lacking meat and heavy on the veggies won't clog your arteries.
As for their banana shakes, well how do I put this... I was enjoying mine quite a bit until someone *cough*Perci*cough* pointed out that the texture of the bananas reminded him of snot. Um, yeah... let's say I then noticed the similarity and won't be ordering that anymore. Ick.
There was a line of people waiting to order when I drove up, but found parking pretty easily since I was willing to walk a short distance. So no complaints there. As for seating, in my opinion, there's a ton of seating available considering what type of place it is. They even have a few 2 tops inside.
Does it live up to the hype? I'd say to an extent it does. Definitely try it once if you are in the area.

"Do you wonder what makes a falafel sandwich so good? Well it is obviously the falafel balls. Falafel balls consist of garbanzo beans and fresh green veggies, but you can not forget about the spices that give a falafel ball its happiness."
Quoted directly from the website of Falafel's Drive In! They have a website?! And a fancy one at that! Aside from menu and contact details, you can find the story - they've been in business for over 40 years! Wow. Five stars for falafel ball happiness.
I will dream of those crispy falafel balls. I already know what I will do the next time I find myself at Falafel's Drive In. I will:
- get in the long, but fast-moving line,
- order either a LARGE or even a falafel salad,
- ask for extra spicy sauce,
- have a fork and extra napkins ready,
- be amazed at how quickly my food comes out,
- stuff my face,
- leave satisfied.
Someone, please direct me to the next best thing, closer to home. I can't be driving to San Jose every day.

Falafel's Drive In isn't flawless, but I have to give them five stars anyway. You've gotta love a falafel sandwich with pita chips and a banana shake. It's an all time classic food combination in any realm and more than the sum of its parts.
The falafel balls themselves are absolute perfection and I'll fight about it if you disagree. Unfortunately the pita bread in the sandwiches don't hold up to the filling, so don't dare put it down or take it out of the paper wrapper. The pita will split and the contents will make a tahini-smeared mess all over your hands, face, lap, and table.
The hummus and gyros are above average, but the masterpiece of the menu is might actually be the kouby. It's like a hush puppy that's stuffed with spiced meat and pinenuts. It's slightly pricier than most items for what you get, but it's AWESOME. Get some tahini ready and DON'T MISS THE KOUBY.

When we bought our home two blocks from here, we always figured that having the Falafel Drive-In in our neighborhood would do nothing but help our property value. We must have been right, since we were recently able to sell our house after the mortgage crisis.
This place is all about the falafel, as the name suggests. A small and fries is enough for one person. Frankly, the fries are not the best I've ever had, but they're good enough.
They have a special, which includes a large falafel and a banana shake. I've had it once or twice, but I'm a yankee-likes-fries-with-falafel kind of guy.
The pita chips are good, but I can only eat a few before the spices overwhelm. And the hummus is awesome...creamy, smooth, with hot sauce, and veggies on the top.
Do yourself a favor...go here and try it.
Great falafel, beef kabob and gyros sandwiches! Falafel balls as a side works well too...they're small (think donut holes), but good (especially with the tahini sauce). Good hummus. I hear a lot of good things about the banana shake, but have yet to try it (I always come here for take-out late after work and am not in the mood for a milkshake at that time).
Not a fan of the babaganuuj (sorry if i butchered the spelling there).
Cheap, but cash only...meh.
They close fairly early (8pm i believe...hard for me to get there after work on some nights).
Poor parking. All seating is outside (not much of it). kind of a dark, old, area (steven's creek/san carlos east of valley fair mall).
Good food though...no doubt about that.

Too bad, so sad.
I had strong hopes for this place. I heard nothing, but positive words about this drive in. And usually its the little hole in the wall drive ins that offer the most authentic, unique, and best foods. However; I was strongly disappointed. Every day I see the line as long as can be, wrapped around the corner, as if you were waiting to see Jesus himself. But now that I have tasted what all the hype was about, the line that seemed as though I were going to have my "last supper" turned into an illusion. If that were my "last supper" I would be still hungry. I ordered a mystery meat kebab, and it was smaller than the fine print on the return policy for Best Buy. Furthermore, the kebab was neither authentic nor best, and I'm still searching for a place in San Jose that serves kebabs in that nice, soft, warm Turkish bread. I must admit, a lot of amateurs love this place, and it's great to see a little mom and pop restaurant doing good; but once you've had the real deal its hard to go back.
If you love wraps, I rate this place a tad bit above the Pita Pit. And we all know that we need to take a shot of Ipecac after we eat at the Pita Pit.

I had previously lived real close by to this place, even saw the sign a few times, but never stopped to find out what it was. Then I saw it mentioned on Food Network, and thought to myself, well I guess I should give it a shot. I am so glad I did. I parked in the back, so when I got my order, I was trying to get back to my truck, but the line to oder was so long, people were hella hungry...they didn't want to step out the way when I was trying to get by. Rude, but I guess that is what happens when your hella hungry :)
Banana shakes are the bomb!
When I feel like eating healthy and I'm near Valley Fair, I think Falafel Drive In is one of my top choices to eat at during the day when they're open. The food is decently price, served quick, and tastes good. I think Falafel Drive In and Pita Pit are good alternatives to fast food. Their banana shake reminds me of the smooth texture of an Orange Julius, but not quite on par with the taste. Their falafel balls and sandwich selection should do the trick for you.
Place looks kind of ghetto and potentially dirty in the kitchen, but what fast food place doesn't look that way.
I am born and raised Bay Area. Things that I have not been to or seen yet: Alcatraz, Winchester Mystery House, Malibu Grand Prix...
but finally, Falafal's Drive In can be scratched off that list.
I had the small falafal sandwich, the hummus dip and an orange freeze. In the famous words of the Road Scholar Borat, I must say
"wah-wah-wee-wah!"
It was the best $10 I have spent in a long time. The food was simple and made right. Probably the best falafal i have ever had. It wasnt burned or too hardly packed and the hummus...oh that gloriuous hummus! What kept me from spreading it all over my body, I am not quite sure.
Just remeniscing of this falafel brings a smile to my face, makes my mouth salivate and makes my nipples hard.
I highly reccomend going here if you want a departure from fast food.

I love this place. I can eat with my dog (it's outdoors). It's cheap. It's relatively healthy (I get the salad..it's quite satisfying). It's quick. Most importantly, they have the best falafels EVER...even better than my home, Google.
