I love, love, love Fairway.  High quality food, including hard to find organic and high-end specialty food is available here at prices that are often much more reasonable than Whole Foods.  The prices here are definitely cheaper than the small natural food grocery stores near me (Khim's & Brooklyn Natural).  I tend to spend a lot and stock up on stuff here because it is a bit out of the way.  I have a car so it's not too bad - I love the fact that they have a parking lot - I hate street parking or paying for parking when I'm going grocery shopping.

Their olive bar is awesome - my favorite is the olives stuffed w/ preserved orange.  You can sample the olives as well as the olive oils before buying - now that is my kind of grocery store!

I have yet to meet anyone that doesn't LOVE fairway.  It's huge, well organized, carries anything and everything and the food is always fresh.  The prices vary and some stuff is well priced and others not as much. If you compare it to a regular super market it might be a bit more pricey (i.e Shop Rite type) but when compared to Whole Foods or Citarella, the prices can't be beat.

The best part is the little cafeteria in the back.  The selection isn't huge (try the lobster roll or bagel with lox) but the food is ALWAYS fresh.  They have outside seating which is amazing in winter or summer since you're sitting feet away from the water.

Love, Love, Love Fairway.

I have heard amazing things about Fairway.

It's Jewish.
It has all the coolest and latest kosher needs and wants.
It's amazing.
This one even has (gasp!) a parking lot.

But last weekend completely justified my reasoning for maintaining my avid Trader Joe's shopping endeavors.

I will never set foot in Fairway again.  Who knows if it was the ridiculous amount of Jewish and gentile families cramming their last-minute Thanksgiving shopping before the the "big day..."  But I almost left this market in a state of panic.

The lay out is confusing.  It's a goddamn conundrum.  (Forgive me for saying god's name in vain).  So much so that my roommate and I LOST our friends for like 15 minutes trying to traverse the Fairway maze.

The produce didn't seem all that fresh. I even found a piece of human hair in some of the heirloom tomatoes.  GROSS.

And the fact that I was yelled at multiple times for not maneuvering my cart correctly in the disorderly "line" to check out... well that is just rude.

So long, Fairway.  Better luck next time?

I'm kind of disappointed. So, ok. I'm a huge foodie and friends have been talking up Fairway for years. My fiance and I borrowed my mom's car and trekked (and, with my passenger seat navigational skills, it was a trek) to Red Hook. I was super excited.

So, pros: we got a beautiful looking strip steak for $3.99/lb, delicious olives, enough free samples that dinner was unnecessary, and some yogurt on sale.

But, cons: the location sucks, the prices on everything else were totally average. We're used to spending about $50/week at Trader Joe's and we blew $75!

I think that if we were planning to have a fancy party of some kind, Fairway would be a great place to visit for specialty foods at a relatively reasonable price. However, for everyday shopping, I'll take Trader Joe's.

this is my favorite fairway.

i enjoy the one on 72nd for it being a city grocery, and packing as much into as small a space as they do, and it has the charm lacking in the one on 125th st. but, what... did all the good cheese guys from 72nd go to the red hook one? red hook always seems to have guys who seem to live cheese. every recommend has been well-received. veggies, fruits, juices, fish, meats, international food... bread! greek yogurts! and, it seems to have its own specials, w/ more choice and better selection than the other fairways, or any other market around.

my fave stovetop espresso maker hails from here. stainless steel, thanks... every day its pressed into service, and every day it delivers.

kinda like fairway.

I wanted to give a special shout out to the cashiers here. They are friendly, helpful and not sullen or gruff, as some cashiers at grocery stores seem to be. Considering they have to deal with oblivious parents and their screaming children on a daily basis, it's a wonder they don't snap. The cashier I had last Saturday was awesome. She also packed my canvas bag like she was playing Tetris. I even mentioned that fact to her and got her to laugh. So, thank you kind cashiers at Fairway....

Fairway is an awesome supermarket in size and value.  You NEED to drive here, which is a bit of a pain since Van Brunt street is littered with pot holes and trucks blocking both lanes, but once you get inside it's totally worth it.

Their prices on most everything are incredible, and their produce is hard to beat anywhere else in Brooklyn (save the farmers market in Prospect Park).  They have a decent prepared foods section, and a great bakery.  What really keeps me coming back is the coffee section, which smells like heaven and has some of the best beans I've tried in a long time.

All of this coupled with a great view of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty make Fairway the best 'Super' market in Brooklyn.

fairway is so amazing.  i've never been in anything like it.  it's like a combination trader joe's, whole foods, harris teeter, piggly wiggly, and your corner store.  i like to come in the middle of the week when it's not slammed.  you should bring a car or a very large cart to tote your items back with you.

the sandwiches in the deli area are DELICIOUS.  the back porch area to sit and grub is beautiful, and there are old subway cars to play on.  i hear the coffee's not so great, but the gelato is amazing.  i can think of nothing to complain about, other than, of course, i wish it was closer to me so i could go every day.  and/or closer to a train.  but it's perfect to take the bus to!  i mean ikea's right next door, so it's not TOO hard to get to.  and you can ride your bike.  they need more bike racks ...

i get everything here though.  from texas pete and cake mix from betty crocker that includes high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated vegetable oil to organic EVERYTHING.  fairway has everything.  everything.  except for my brand of paper towels and my brand of cereal.  but small beans.  cause you can also actually bring your dr. brommer's soap bottles back here to get them refilled.  haven't found anywhere else to do that around these parts!

oh and try the baguettes.  trust me.  and thanks fairway for making a smaller size!

can't believe it took me a whole year to discover fairway.  it's magnificent.

This place is awesome!

An amazing selection of high quality food. Their fruits and vegetables are very fresh, and you can buy quite a few organic products.

But the wide selection of foods is what really won me over: when I went there last Saturday they had about ten different extra virgin olive oils to try with bread. I also noticed a wide selection of coffee beans on display, and their beer selection is definitely one of the best you can hope for in a supermarket (I got a Red Rocket ale, which was excellent).

Despite this being a Saturday afternoon, the place wasn't crowded at all.

Finally, where else in NYC can you do grocery shopping by the water, while looking at the Statue of Liberty? Priceless...

love the market/the building/cashiers/variety/
don't love deli counter/not so friendly and wrong orders...and...
trying to return something that has gone bad before its time is a lesson in humility....it must be my fault - even though I travel by car with a cooler .  A lesson in customer relations could benefit them.  They are certainly nicer than the counterpart group on long island, but somehow miss the personality of NYC, where you expect to be ignored, but its worth it.

I'm not that huge a fan of lobster rolls. In fact, I could probably go several years without eating a lobster in any form.*

But when some friends suggested going down to Fairway to have some, I decided to tag along.

It made almost the perfect day before July 4th lunch: a not-over-dressed lobster roll, on the traditional hot dog bun, with chips and cole slaw, on a picnic bench, by the water, with childrens'-book- illustration-tug-boats off-shore and the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

So much is about setting, isn't it? I don't know if they'd even be serving lobster rolls in November. If they were, they probably wouldn't be nearly as good as they were on July 3rd, 2009.

Fortunately, there's still a lot of summer left to go over there.

----------------
*They look like big, huge bugs and they hardly have any flavor.

Fairway is like THE premier destination for us Brooklyn folks who crave upscale, unique, healthy, groceries but don't want to trek our butts across the bridge to Manhattan island to get them. god gave us Fairway Market's Brooklyn branch.

For me, it's a short 15 minute car ride away. They have a big parking lot that's pretty active, so it doesn't take too long to find a spot. Notice I said "too long." It can take a little bit of patience and driving around in circles, but spots do open up.

Once inside those doors, the first thing you'll notice is the immediate blast of freezing air conditioning that greets you. Bring a sweater, it will stave off hypothermia long enough for you to get what you need and go! You'll proceed through a zig zag pathway of the freshest most colorful fruits and veggies.

Your nose will be rewarded with the smell of rather decently already prepared food, in which you can buy by the pound. While you're there you can check out various meats, cheeses, cold cuts, and fresh seafood behind those counters where those nice people help you with a smile on their faces.

I love that you can you pick up a decent selection of ethnic cooking ingredients. I've found chocolates and candies from Europe that's really hard to get your hands on. They bake their breads, bagels and rolls daily. Sometimes I wait around for them to bring out newly baked up baguettes. It really is hot and toasty. OMG, it's good bread.

The best thing about Fairway is the fact that you can order up sandwiches and other hot food items and grab a seat outdoors facing the water to eat them up. When I discovered that $10 got me a fairly decent lobster roll with a side crisp and crunchy cole slaw and a generous helping of kettle cooked potato chips, I was sold. This is almost a must whenever I come to Fairways during a warm day.

Fairways just isn't another supermarket. It's a destination. It's an experience to be had. Come and you will get it.

sometimes i just don't get it. fairway gripes:
why did it take me a 100 years to realize i don't particularly enjoy their prepared foods? i don't even like their coffee. i'll just drink in the view next time. (i still like that)
and they need to stop neglecting dog owners, it would be nice to find the commonplace food we give our wonderful canine friend.
and their candied ginger is miserable and stringy.
still they do sell wild boar by totatum! feed asterix, obelix, cacofonix and getafix some wild boar, perhaps getafix will set you up with some potion, or you'll get a menhir to clobber the next shopping cartragious solipsist who persists in boorish behavior.

This is the best Fairway location.
Lots of really good produce, bakery is good.
Organic bulk section is well stocked and not crowded. :)
It's basically a bigger, cleaner version of the one on Upper West Side.
And you can see the Statue of Liberty!

As far as New York grocery goes Fairway has got it figured out.  The selections are the best.  There is a mixture of organic and conventional products in terms of packaged goods.  The Brooklyn store seems to be the best out of the the three (Harlem, UWS and Brooklyn).  The meat dept is very helpful and friendly.  Go on "off" hours and you will have more of a non-rushed shopping experience.

Foodie heaven! I used to be a Whole Foods girl, but after one visit here, I saw stuff that I have NEVER seen at lowly Whole Foods.

Dozens of wooden barrels bearing the wonderful aroma of exotic coffee beans (Chocolate Raspberry!). A whole aisle dedicated to EVOO. At least a hundred different types of cheese, from fleur vert to chedder to truffled cow's milk. Baguettes for $2, bagels for 60 cents, cage-free organic eggs were $3.99.

Fresh grass-fed cow's milk of the Fairway brand. Unpasteurized fresh-squeezed OJ. Cage-free eggs. Huge selection of beer, including raspberry wheat. Fresh sparkling pineapple and pomegranate juices with no added sugar. Eli Zabar's challah. Fresh ciabatta, brioche loaves, and rustic pane di casa.

Amazing seafood section. Octupus, red snapper, porgy fish, scallops fresh from the sea. Fresh tuna steaks and wild salmon are a given.

If these things appeal to you, you will LOVE Fairway. Wherever you're coming from, it's worth the trip. Organic produce aisle has avocados, tomatos, potatoes, and every other veggie or fruit you need.

TIP: For anyone who's kosher, I saw pigs in a blanket, empire chicken, and shelves stocked with Manischewitz items, as well as Hebrew: "The Chosen Beer."

Wow...if you are a supermarket junkie, then this is your heaven! They have everything your foodie heart could desire. We came here on a sunny Saturday afternoon, no intentions to buy groceries, just to eat and to exploit the beautiful scenery in the back of the supermarket ;-)
The food was so-so. I probably would not buy from the hot/cold food bar again, and the sushi was really suboptimal. Maybe I should have been smart like mi madre and had a reuben. But really...don't come here for the ready made food, come to browse, eat something, sit outside and enjoy your view of the Statue of Liberty and by some goods for the home ;-)

+ nice selection of brands, not only gourmet but  also  familiar brands
+ prices are moderate depending on the brand, to be expected
+ good sales. when buying in bulk.... read the signs otherwise will pay the individual stamped price
+ the line moves fast, since  they have someone to monitor and move people about to other lines
+ large parking lot
*******bonus  there is a seating area next to the water

- signs are too high to read,  hard to find the aisle to find food

There is much to love about this supermarket.  It is large.  It is full of high-quality groceries, has an excellent meat department, great produce and just about anything else you might want.  It is like a more down-to-earth Whole Foods.  I haven't done any serious price comparisons but I'd venture that prices at Fairway are (slightly) lower on average.

Being as cool as it is, Fairway is also ridiculously crowded and difficult to navigate.  The store layout is a kind of bizarre maze and if you need to turn around and retrace your steps you will feel like a wild salmon attempting to swim up a raging river of rage-filled shoppers.  They will gleefully smash you with their carts.

So - not to miss anything as you go by or you may live (or die) to regret it.

Holy hell, this Fairway is probably triple the size of the one in Harlem! It's basically a food wonderland. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is for the serious lack of convenience to get to. If you're going to do a big grocery shopping trip here, you really have to have a car because it's in Red Hook which is totally inaccessible by subway.

Prices are cheap and they literally have everything. It's actually probably a good thing it's too inconvenient for me to shop here because I would spend way too much money. Plus, it's on the water and has a beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty. Bonus!

Time and again, Fairway is my grocery store of choice. It's unfortunate there was a bad review on the produce below. I sometimes purchase my produce from Rossman's Produce on 26th and 3rd Ave when I don't have time to make it to Fairway.

I always inspect the underside of my container of berries when picking them out to ensure no mold as started growing, but I've never had a problem from Fairway.

However, there have been a few occasions where my checkout lady as been as slow as molasses.

FYI: There is a back parking lot as well, which will save time in looping around. Go after 8PM to avoid the large crowds and chaos!

I finally have a car so this was my first stop. It was soooo wonderful to park in a parking lot. I went in the middle of the day and it wasn't crowded at all. I was completely overwhelmed with all the goodies they had.
This was totally stupid of me but I didn't realize that the store was divided in half. One half is very fu fu and the other half is like a typical grocery store. I like nice things but for most food items the "normal" section is just fine. Just a warning before you fill your basket up.
The produce was great, super fresh and tasted wonderful. They have a wonderful cheese selection and also an amazing olive bar. Almost too much stuff.
Seriously anything you want is in this store. Just go when its not crowded cause I can imagine that would be a total nightmare.

Count me in...I'm definitely a Fairway's Fan!

What I love most about this grocery paradise is the large food selection and the view. Outside pass those bakery doors you will find me with a nice hot cup of their delicious brew and a Bada--bing panini (Italian cold cuts) with chips on the side and I'm set!

Oh yes, the shopping part...
You will find a large selection of outdoor and inside fruits & vegetables, a large deli, (good value for the rotisserie chicken and 2 sides). The self-serve bar is incredible for bringing home dinner! Well stocked shelfs and departments including meats, fish, organic foods, granola, nuts are awesome!  The bakery has the most delicious cannoli's and fresh hot breads. Yes the kind of bread that you want to rip the end off before you reach the check-out counter. I especially like to get a pound of the Fairways to Heaven coffee. I don't recommend going on the weekend due to high crowds. Oh, I can't forget to mention the free sliced Italian bread to dip in the many different types of olive oil is a treat!

Free on site 2 parking lots and Ikea is a few blocks from here too...WoWiE!!!

FYI, about 2 or 3 blocks from here you will find the the location where the MTV Real World was filmed.

I can't hate on Fairway, but after discovering Sahadi's and Three Guys in Brooklyn I rarely go anymore. The best part for me was the bulk and olive bars -- but after seeing someone stick their fingers into three vats of olives while some staff was right there seeing them, I kind of gagged a little.

Cheap and fresh produce, but not really worth the pain in the ass it is to get here without a car.

This really may be my all time favorite grocery store. Not only is it a great location with terreffic views, but it carries everything. I don't think I have ever been let down by Fairway in terms of selection.
Huge selections.
My faves? Their produce. House brand fresh squeezed OJ. Meat. Fish. Mini bagels in the bakery. Selections of jellies and salsas. Coffee. And their little aisle of British candy and groceries.
Yes, it does get crowded on the weekends, but after you go a few times, it all seems much easier to deal with.
Oh, and their prices are quite good.

I'm actually glad that this Fairway is soooo far away from where I live because I can see myself wandering its produce aisle for days. No joke. It's the dead of winter right now but last week there were no less than 6 varieties of pears stacked 4 feet tall. The store is neat and pristine and this location definitely wins out over the UWS. One story so there's no crummy elevator to wait for. There is little to no wait for cash registers and plenty of room to move your cart around.

Ladies, if you like your food miniature (since there's less calories = girl math) you're gonna go gaga for their mini-bagels. It's the perfect portion and baked fresh everyday. They even have whole wheat and everything mini bagels. And one of the few grocery stores in NYC, if not the country, that sells flagels = flattened bagels.

Fairway brand smoked salmon is great too, I tried their smoked tuna but I definitely prefer the salmon (more fatty).

One drawback is that they don't have a lot of discounts that you would expect from a large supermarket. I didn't see a lot of items on sale but then again, they have a lot of organic and natural products that are expensive to begin with and rarely ever go on sale.

Conclusion - worth the trek out there. When the weather gets better, I plan on riding my bike onto the free Ikea ferry, heading to the Red Hook Ballpark for some tacos and going by Fairway.

It was a late Thursday afternoon, and Roderick was in pain. He knew he had to take his Vicodin, to relieve his tooth pain, but he couldn't take it on an empty stomach.

He had already left IKEA and their fab Swedish meatballs. So he drove around for somewhere where he could pick up even a cupcake or a Twinkie or anything to fill his stomach with. As he was driving, he ended up at the very end of Van Brunt and came upon a warehouse. When he looked to his right, to his utter amazement he saw his oasis - Fairway.

Yes, a supermarket paradise in the middle of Red Hook. Who would've thunk it? He sped into the parking lot, almost hit an elderly woman using a walker. He parked the car in the handicapped spot, as he is known to do, and ran inside.  What he saw inside was eye-opening.

A salad bar, a hot food buffet, organic foods galore. And best of all, which made him literally kiss the floor, a four-pack of Boylan's Ginger Ale  AKA crack disguised as soda pop.

So Roderick walked out with Boylan's Ginger Ale, some tuna, frozen dumplings, and of course a pack of Twinkie's. He swallowed the Twinkies, took his Vicodin, did an Irish jig, and off to his next destination he went - Redhook Bait and Tackle...

To Be Continued.

I heart Fairway...wholeheartedly even. They have everything you need  and the lobster roll is a nice treat too.

My only two complaints about Fairway is...number 1, the layout. The "organic room" is odd to me since they have organic products also mixed into the main areas. Sometimes I have a hard time finding specific things. My number 2 complaint is with the customers. They are really quite rotten to each other for the most part. I once asked a woman politely "excuse me" so to get to the bananas, as her cart was  blocking access. She was so angry and scowled me.  *shiver*   I saw a man run through the produce area and knock another man down. He didn't care and kept running. Bizarre. Try to go at odd hours if you are able, to avoid the crazies and meansters. On the other hand, I do find the staff to be helpful and friendly which is more important.

Better than most supermarkets, a pretty special one for New York. Transportation is difficult, so you should try to scrounge up a car and do it all in one big trip. There's a huge selection of goods, anything you'd find at a normal grocery store, fresh produce, imports, meats, a huge pasta selection, and an in-store cafe with some attractive industrial waterfront seating (in the summer).

The cheesemonger is one of the highlights, he'll walk you through finding the cheese you want and they will largely be delicious. The peanut butter isn't healthy, but it's a good treat. You can try anything from the olive bar before you buy, and If you go while the samples are out, you'll leave the store stuffed from grazing.

First I have a confession to make:  I love Supermarkets, I could spend all day at a Supermarket.  Also, in case you didn't read the last sentence I love Supermarkets.  Fairway is amazing - it's huge and has pretty much every food made.  Every time you think you're nearing the end, there are more isles.  Holy fantasticness.  I think I will go every weekend.

This is my favorite Fairway and it's worth going to Brooklyn to shop here for special events! I love getting fresh mozerella, love the friendly staff and there are so many choices that it took us awhile to find our favorite olives (I had to say that I liked the Jalapeno ones). This is the only grocery store where I don't mind browsing the aisles as you're bound to always find something!

Best Grocery Store Ever.
It doesn't hurt that I'm in love with the fish guy... and the cheese guy... and the deli guy - the staff here is so friendly.
Their produce kicks ass compared to most other grocery stores in brooklyn. The only place to get better produce is the farmers market.
Like everyone else said, driving is pretty much a must as this is not close to anything.
